Re: [videoblogging] Cluster...putting the computers together???

2006-01-17 Thread Verdi
Here's the little info that I know. Might help you get started.
The new version of Final Cut Pro - 5 includes a program called Apple
Qmaster. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it's for. I've never run
though. If you don't have that, there is a program called Pooch that
will allow you to run Macs in Parallel. I don't know if FCP 4 can
take advantage of that or not. I would love to know what you find out
though!

2006-01-17 Thread duncan

AFAIK final cut pro doesn't support networked rendering at present. One workaround would be to put the project file in a shared folder, open it on all the machines you can network together and render different sections on each machine, then export each section at full resolution and recombine them.

[videoblogging] Re: Cluster...putting the computers together???

2006-01-17 Thread Bill Streeter
Qmaster with FCP 5 only works with Motion and Compressor (as far as I
know) and won't get you any better render times if your computers are
connected on anything slower than gigabit eithernet and they have
simular processors. I tested it out with my G5 my old G4 and my wifes
iBook and it was slow--much slower than just compressing on a my
G% only. The ideal situation for doing this, I think, is if you have
access to several top of the line G5s. Then there might be a real
advantage to clustering. But for just good old FCP rendering, there
really is no advantage at all since clustered rendering isn't
supported at all.

[videoblogging] Re: What to buy and use; Editing software / tools / tapes / magazines /

2006-01-17 Thread Rich Hand
I purchased the very same camera. You should note that the only issue
that I have found with this camera is a soft focus problem.

Using either auto or manual focus, it appears that the image resolves
to a soft focus.

Now that said, I had purchased Pinnacle Studio 9 long ago. Since I
already had that software I purchased an upgrade to Avid Liquid 7
(latest version). I have found this to do everything I need and
seems to be able to run on a normal PC without too much increase over
a stock setup. Biggest improvement was seen when I added addition
memory.

There is a great DVD education series for Avid Liquid. I also
purchased this and found lots of tips and hints and rarely used bits
in Liquid. Very helpful.

Other questions:

accessory I always use - white 24x36 inch foam core panel (artist
supply) is used for setting white balance manually and as a light
reflector.

Tapes: tapes are relatively inexpensive, so use once and store is my
plan. I use the tapes as backup storage for original raw content.

Mag: VideoMaker

Audio: I currently us the Rode Video shotgun Mic. Good size for our
camcorder. Will start using Azden wireless mic in the near future.

I think you are all eager to answer some newbie questions?
Yes I know they (newbies) keep coming over and over again and ask
 the same old stupid questions.
But hey if you do not ask you never know what others think about it.
 Well here it goes;

 The ingredients so far

 -Bought a digital videocam , Panasonic PV-GS150 3ccd minidv ,
 http://tinyurl.com/7v93n
(also spare battery, UV filter, mono-pod, tapes and a 3W light no
 microfoon yet)
 -I'm building a website using WordPress http://vlogmatic.com
-Have content in my head and its around everywhere.
-I read the discussions about duration and publishing of video and
all the artistic issues with vlogs.
-Have a fast PC with windows XP sp2 and cable internet.

 Then I got stuck on a few technical questions;

 1. What the heck should I use to edit the video's with?

I have the free windows XP moviemaker but it is too limited for my
 desire.
I know you can buy all sorts of add-ons but I believe there is no
 development for moviemaker anymore.
However spending over $200 for editing software is not in the
budget. What is the next best alternative?
(Functions I like/need ; transitions, different fonts, use of
green-screen, audio editing, adding sounds and clips)
I have not yet decided on the publishing format.

Is Vegas movie studio + dvd platinum a good choice?
   Or
Pineaccle Studio media suite 10 ?

 2. What are the must have software utility's and/or gadgets? you use
 on a regular basis?

 3. How many times can I use a tape?
(Consider it being a good quality tape)

 4. Do you subscribe to any video magazines?

Ok for now these are my questions and I would appreciate any answers
 very much.
Anything else i did not mention would be important to think of? (yup
 a catch all question)

you want to breka into, and then using it for the purposes of

[videoblogging] Yahoo Video Search

2006-01-17 Thread David Meade
Hi all, I have a question about the Yahoo video Search ...

I'm not in it, and I'm fairly sure I've submitted my feed. Yahoo
however has about 3.7million web services :-P so its possible I did it
incorrectly or submitted it to the wrong place...

I used this page: http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html (once a
long time ago and then again a few weeks ago ... I'm still not in
there)

Can anyone point me in the right direction for steps I need to follow
to have my feed indexed by Yahoo!'s video search?

I never really cared before, but I started playing around with the
yahoo search feature within fireant, and decided it would in fact be
nice to be in the results :-)

thanks
  Dave

I just viewed a short shot with a Canon eos 20d that you might enjoy,

[videoblogging] OpenVlog - free upload/encoding service

2006-01-17 Thread Patrick
OpenVlog is a free web-based service that allows anyone to record,
upload, encode, publish and share their video in a simple and
straightforward manner. There is no software to download or configure
and the service works with all types of computers including PCs, Macs
and Linux boxes. OpenVlog utilizes Flash-based technology to convert,
encode and display all videos uploaded to its servers. The nice
feature, pioneered a long-time ago by services like Audioblog.com and
more recently by Video Egg, is the ability to record your own video
directly while using your own computer webcam. OpenVlog also allows
the direct upload of existing video clips and it supports most
existing video file formats. Max duration for video clips uploaded is
five minutes. Free to use.

Hey guys,

First of all, let me say that we're aware of bliptv.com. I don't
think I should say very much about the issue at the moment, but we're
doing what we can (in regular consultation with our lawyers) to deal
with the situation.

I don't think anyone was out to hurt anyone or otherwise do anything
dishonest. Now it's just a matter of what we can do so both companies
can get on with our lives in the best manner possible.

Re: [videoblogging] Advice on microphones (for loud conventions)

2006-01-17 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Kitka,

Question first: what do you have to interface between mic and camera,
anything? If you've got a mixer or similar device that takes 3-pin XLR
(or Canon) plugs, I can recommend Shure's SM-57 or SM-58 microphones.
They are dynamic mics with large diaphragms that require a lot of air
motion to move them, hence the excellent rejection of background noise.
Last time I checked, they were like $125.00 and worth every penny. They
are sturdy, and for a long time were the stage mic of choice for bands.

By the way, what are folks who use external hand mics using between
mics and their cameras?

Re: [videoblogging] Advice on microphones (for loud conventions)

2006-01-17 Thread Eddie Codel
Make sure you get a directional mic. Directionals are great for loud areas
because they pickup what you aim into them (your voice). We use a $20 Radio
Shack mic for Geek Entertainment TV and it serves us quite well. Unless your
going for serious audiofile quality, most people won't tell the difference from
a $20 mic to a $150 mic.

Re: [videoblogging] Screencasting in Windows Media File (long)

2006-01-17 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Unable to get with Raymond last night, I did solve the problem this
morning, by converting the .wmv files to .avi. I did that using STOIK,
which is freeware video conversion software.

Whew! The .avi files look fine! A tiny bit blurry, but not jumpy/crazy
like the other ones! I even converted the .avi files that Windows
Movie Maker had made which were all jumpy, and converted from .avi to
.avi, and got a much smoother video.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions yesterday. Even though I was
cranky (technofrustration strikes again), you were all very patient
with my questions. I know it was an esoteric question, something that
not many people do, but it really helped.

I have questions about the name, has our Blip.tv been trademarked

and the other is for desktop citizens?

Is a lay jury gonna see it that way? Jeepers, what a pickle!

2006-01-17 Thread Markus Sandy

If you wish to reduce the volume of all of a
particular individual's broadcasts, click on their 'name area' situated
at the bottom left of the interface. Clicking towards the left is less
and towards the right is more.
A grey bar indicates the level for each person. No grey bar visible is
maximum
volume. A grey bar fully across the 'name area' is minimum volume.
Simply 'Left' Click to change a single individual's volume.
Alt+Click if you wish to change everyone's volume to the same level
at
once.
Ctrl+Click (Cmd+Click Macs) if you wish to change everyone's volume
in
'proportion' to the change made to the person clicked on.

btw, there's a conference room opening up in a few minutes at

http://flash.kmi.open.ac.uk:8080/fm/index.php?pwd=f40f38-2998

tonight's topic is: is mundane the new punk or is it just mundane?

90 minutes of babble with occasional moments of brilliance and 3vil

please join in =)

Hi Patrick,

Welcome.

OpenVlog is a free web-based service that allows anyone to record,

encode and display all videos uploaded to its servers. The nice
feature, pioneered a long-time ago by services like Audioblog.com and
more recently by Video Egg, is the ability to record your own video
directly while using your own computer webcam. OpenVlog also allows
the direct upload of existing video clips and it supports most
existing video file formats. Max duration for video clips uploaded is
 five minutes. Free to use.

note that this only applies to the archive playback - you can use it to
even out the playback if someone is too loud or soft

This is not specifically vlog-related, but I need some help and you are all very knowledgeable. I am normally a Mac/iMovie user, so this is all a steep learning curve. Unfortunately, my deadline is tomorrow
for a finished product, so I have to leap the curve ASAP. OK, here are the specs of my assignment: Make a training video using Windows to be put on a DVD. Have screencam video in it (basically, video of my desktop as I
perform various tasks). Here's what I did and what's going wrong: I used Windows Media Encoder to capture the screen. No problems there, though everything ran slowly. I used a custom encoder profile:
Screen capture, no audio. Encode to file, no limit. Compression: Video encoding mode:CBR Audience: 1009 Kbps Video codec:Windows Media Video 9 Video bit rate: 1000 Kbps
Video size: Same as video input Frame rate: 29.97 fps Key frame:6 s Image quality:0 Buffer size:Default Not 2-pass encoding (which WME kept complaining wasn't possible with
screencapture) No cropping No video processing options No plugins No security What's going wrong is that I imported these files into Windows Movie Maker and when I preview the clip from the Collection, it's fine. When
I preview the clip from the storyboard, it's nearly impossible to view-- the text is fuzzy and bitmappy. A screen shot of the storyboard is available here, but I can't get the collection to screenshot
properly-- it appears to not want to take an accurate screenshot (probably playing video via plugin?): View from the Storyboard:
http://www.scottrell.com/personal/images/FromStoryboard.png So, the question is: Should I worry about this Collections preview issue? Is it just previewing badly, but will show up fine in the final
rendering? I might add: the generated .avi from these files (I tested it), so far, has not impressed me-- they appear to be very jumpy. When I import them into Roxio, they appear to smooth out, but I haven't
actually burned the DVD yet to see how well it plays. Help? Suggestions? Tips and tricks? Please don't tell me to use iMovie. I can't take the screencam except on the windows box, and the
screencam software saves as WMV. If all else fails, I will bring the Mac laptop tomorrow and try to convert everything to .mov and use iMovie, but tomorrow's my last day here, and I needed these training videos to be done by then.

Is it enough separation that one company targets mobile users
and the other is for desktop citizens?

Blip.tv also supports mobile uploads. I wouldn't say its only for
desktop citizens.

Is a lay jury gonna see it that way? Jeepers, what a pickle!

A great affordable option is a Beachtek box. It lets you plug an XLR cable into any camera that has a 1/8 mic jack, and has several noise reduction thing-a-ma-things to help prevent noise that can be introduced into the system by the camera itself. (Read Jay Rose's book on Production Audio for details.) By using this device, you don't need a mixer. They've got two channels -- for two mikes, which lets you send one mike to the left channel and the other to the right. And you get a gain a control for each channel.

There are different Beachtek boxes for different cameras, or you can get one a general one.

I've tried an XLR-to-1/8 cable on multiple occasions and have always HATED the results. Get the beachtek!
