Re: [videoblogging] Cluster...putting the computers together???
Here's the little info that I know. Might help you get started. The new version of Final Cut Pro - 5 includes a program called Apple Qmaster. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it's for. I've never run though. If you don't have that, there is a program called Pooch that will allow you to run Macs in Parallel. I don't know if FCP 4 can take advantage of that or not. I would love to know what you find out though! -Verdi -- Me: http://michaelverdi.com RD: http://evilvlog.com Learn to videoblog: http://freevlog.org Learn to videoblog in person: http://node101.org On Jan 17, 2006, at 6:11 AM, Nathan Miller wrote: Anyone know how to run a couple Macs parallel so that I could knock down my rendering time...I am using Final Cut Hmmm...is this possible? Re: [videoblogging] Cluster...putting the computers together???
AFAIK final cut pro doesn't support networked rendering at present. One workaround would be to put the project file in a shared folder, open it on all the machines you can network together and render different sections on each machine, then export each section at full resolution and recombine them. be welld-- URL: http://29fragiledays.blogspot.com URL: http://www.kleindesign.co.uk YAHOO! [videoblogging] Re: Cluster...putting the computers together???
Qmaster with FCP 5 only works with Motion and Compressor (as far as I know) and won't get you any better render times if your computers are connected on anything slower than gigabit eithernet and they have simular processors. I tested it out with my G5 my old G4 and my wifes iBook and it was slow--much slower than just compressing on a my G% only. The ideal situation for doing this, I think, is if you have access to several top of the line G5s. Then there might be a real advantage to clustering. But for just good old FCP rendering, there really is no advantage at all since clustered rendering isn't supported at all. [videoblogging] Re: What to buy and use; Editing software / tools / tapes / magazines /
I purchased the very same camera. You should note that the only issue that I have found with this camera is a soft focus problem. Using either auto or manual focus, it appears that the image resolves to a soft focus. Now that said, I had purchased Pinnacle Studio 9 long ago. Since I already had that software I purchased an upgrade to Avid Liquid 7 (latest version). I have found this to do everything I need and seems to be able to run on a normal PC without too much increase over a stock setup. Biggest improvement was seen when I added addition memory. There is a great DVD education series for Avid Liquid. I also purchased this and found lots of tips and hints and rarely used bits in Liquid. Very helpful. Other questions: accessory I always use - white 24x36 inch foam core panel (artist supply) is used for setting white balance manually and as a light reflector. Tapes: tapes are relatively inexpensive, so use once and store is my plan. I use the tapes as backup storage for original raw content. Mag: VideoMaker Audio: I currently us the Rode Video shotgun Mic. Good size for our camcorder. Will start using Azden wireless mic in the near future. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, usadutch2001 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think you are all eager to answer some newbie questions? I know you can buy all sorts of add-ons but I believe there is no development for moviemaker anymore. However spending over $200 for editing software is not in the budget. What is the next best alternative? (Functions I like/need ; transitions, different fonts, use of green-screen, audio editing, adding sounds and clips) I have not yet decided on the publishing format. Is Vegas movie studio + dvd platinum a good choice? Or Pineaccle Studio media suite 10 ? 2. What are the must have software utility's and/or gadgets? you use on a regular basis? 3. How many times can I use a tape? (Consider it being a good quality tape) 4. Do you subscribe to any video magazines? Ok for now these are my questions and I would appreciate any answers very much. Hey guys, First of all, let me say that we're aware of bliptv.com. I don't think I should say very much about the issue at the moment, but we're doing what we can (in regular consultation with our lawyers) to deal with the situation. Re: [videoblogging] Advice on microphones (for loud conventions)
Kitka, Question first: what do you have to interface between mic and camera, anything? If you've got a mixer or similar device that takes 3-pin XLR (or Canon) plugs, I can recommend Shure's SM-57 or SM-58 microphones. They are dynamic mics with large diaphragms that require a lot of air motion to move them, hence the excellent rejection of background noise. Last time I checked, they were like $125.00 and worth every penny. They are sturdy, and for a long time were the stage mic of choice for bands. By the way, what are folks who use external hand mics using between mics and their cameras? Jan -- It isn't done alone. Re: [videoblogging] Advice on microphones (for loud conventions)
Make sure you get a directional mic. Directionals are great for loud areas because they pickup what you aim into them (your voice). We use a $20 Radio Shack mic for Geek Entertainment TV and it serves us quite well. Unless your going for serious audiofile quality, most people won't tell the difference from a $20 mic to a $150 mic. -eddie On Tue, Jan 17, 2006 at 05:33:16PM -, Ms. Kitka wrote: This weekend I posted my first footage from a correspondent attending a convention and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good quality microphones that would cut out as much background noise as possible without muffling the interviewer/interviewee's voices. Re: [videoblogging] Screencasting in Windows Media File (long)
Unable to get with Raymond last night, I did solve the problem this morning, by converting the .wmv files to .avi. I did that using STOIK, which is freeware video conversion software. Whew! The .avi files look fine! A tiny bit blurry, but not jumpy/crazy like the other ones! I even converted the .avi files that Windows Movie Maker had made which were all jumpy, and converted from .avi to .avi, and got a much smoother video. Thanks everyone for your suggestions yesterday. Even though I was cranky (technofrustration strikes again), you were all very patient with my questions. A screen shot of the storyboard is available here, but I can't get the collection to screenshot properly-- it appears to not want to take an accurate screenshot (probably playing video via plugin?): View from the Storyboard: http://www.scottrell.com/personal/images/FromStoryboard.png So, the question is: Should I worry about this Collections preview issue? Is it just previewing badly, but will show up fine in the final rendering? I might add: the generated .avi from these files (I tested it), so far, has not impressed me-- they appear to be very jumpy. When I import them into Roxio, they appear to smooth out, but I haven't actually burned the DVD yet to see how well it plays. Help? Suggestions? Tips and tricks? Please don't tell me to use iMovie. I can't take the screencam except on the windows box, and the screencam software saves as WMV. If all else fails, I will bring the Mac laptop tomorrow and try to convert everything to .mov and use iMovie, but tomorrow's my last day here, and I needed these training videos to be done by then. Is it enough separation that one company targets mobile users and the other is for desktop citizens? Blip.tv also supports mobile uploads. I wouldn't say its only for desktop citizens. -Josh On 1/17/06, Gena [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hmmm, well I guess it will remain a mystery to me. Re: [videoblogging] Advice on microphones (for loud conventions)
On Jan 17, 2006, at 5:08 PM, Jan McLaughlin wrote: By the way, what are folks who use external hand mics using between mics and their cameras? Jan A great affordable option is a Beachtek box. It lets you plug an XLR cable into any camera that has a 1/8 mic jack, and has several noise reduction thing-a-ma-things to help prevent noise that can be introduced into the system by the camera itself. (Read Jay Rose's book on Production Audio for details.) By using this device, you don't need a mixer. They've got two channels -- for two mikes, which lets you send one mike to the left channel and the other to the right. And you get a gain a control for each channel. There are different Beachtek boxes for different cameras, or you can get one a general one. I've tried an XLR-to-1/8 cable on multiple occasions and have always HATED the results. Get the beachtek! jen
