Re: [videoblogging] myspace revisited
question to you Duncan: would you want your work to live on these sites rather than your blog...or is it just another place to live? Jayhmm.. interesting idea.. 'where does my work live?', in some ways i'd like to think that each of my films stands on its own, although in reality only a few do. i guess once i publish i'm happy for them to live anywhere (as long as i get some control of viewing size ;) but that's from another debate!). my work hasn't ever become 'viral' as such but now and again i do find it taking on a life of it's own that i wouldn't have expected. for example recently one of my films turned up on a christian blog and was being used to start a debate about the meaning of friendship. CBC in Canada have just purchased some of my films for broadcast, still not sure how happy i am about that but i guess it's just another life for them (and it helps pay for some equipment + food!).. originally i was a bit more hard-nosed about it and i put everything on ourmedia or blip and set up the feed and site myself. now i'm putting stuff all over the place, youtube, myspace etc etc. When i started doing this the idea was about 'showing', i wanted to document things and share them with people, RSS and Fireant et al made this easy and help create a working system, i think myspace does a similar thing, it's a different social network though, via fireant i was engaging with people who were doing the same already ( i.e. other videobloggers) , with myspace i'm seeing an audience who aren't, maybe seeing this stuff will inspire them to?so where does my work live? maybe my question is 'where does my work come alive?'.. the only answer i think i have right now is anywhere but on my own computer. be welld(p.s. also, if anyone is wondering why my blogspot has been so quiet recently it's because my camera is in the repair shop, although i think i might start some revlogging soon to keep the flow going) -- URL: http://29fragiledays.blogspot.com URL: http://www.kleindesign.co.uk SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Use YAHOO! [videoblogging] Announcing Podcast Tech Discussion Group
Greetings Videobloggers,Andy Armstrong from hexten.net has started a discussion group for hardcore podcast technology.Agenda includes the technicalities of getting audio and video content from the person who produced it all the way to the people who listen to it. The primary focus of this list is to address the new challenges that face application developers (client and server) and people who have to set up and maintain the web that distributes this content. Although people have been distributing large media files on the web for some time the explosion in podcasting/vlogging is driving the budget for content distribution down - in order to succeed, podcasting needs inexpensive, high bandwidth hosting solutions. At the same time we're building client software that takes the HTTP protocol (which was originally designed for interactive browsing) and twists it in new ways to handle the unattended transfer of relatively large files. If you are interested, sign up here:http://podfamily.net/mailman/listinfo/podcast-techIt's a place where we can talk about servers, clients, protocols, XML, RSS in a robust way without polluting this list. Re: [videoblogging] myspace revisited
so where does my work live? 'where does my work come alive?'.. the only answer i think i have right now is anywhere but on my own computer. this is the best line i've read here in quite a while.cheers to that!the idea of where your media will live/reside -be archived- is more complex than the point of either having a vlog or using a large social networking service. first, everyone should be archiving their media offline as well... if you want to share it with people years from now children/grandchildren etc dont count on any host. archive it on DV tape and DVD and whatever new technologies come out over the years. Eventually, it may become more common to share the media directly from your home to your family and friends homesAcess to your life's media wont necessarily rely on remote servers hosting it for you. for public domain media that you put out there. let's hope that IA and others with same mission to preserve media always exist for the world. most of us wil probably hold on to domain names that identify usthis should be enough to guide people to 'you' wherever the bits of you reside and are found at. maybe a future google will be able to gather and organize your scattered media for you upon request... as meta data and file identity conventions and technology become more common. for years, families have kept video footage of life and passed them on. offline.there is no reason why that should not continue, just because we now have a network at our fingertips. balance. sull On 3/6/06, duncan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: question to you Duncan: would you want your work to live on these sites rather than your blog...or is it just another place to live? Re: [videoblogging] Re: myspace video
Myspace won't go away tomorrow, but the site is still aprimarily a social means of keeping in touch and identity...as the main users of this site (16-24)grow out of this stage I can't see themsticking with it. All my group of friends are on it - we're about 26-32 - about 20 of us. Most of us are filmmakers, musicians, or some sort of artists. The musicians swear by it, the filmmakers are either fascinated or disgusted by it, and the rest of the people like to collect friends like pogs and talk trash about each other. We all used friendster for a while and then got bored of it - this is slightly different because it has such a critical mass of users and is now a cultural phenomenon. If you aren't on it, you are seen as missing an opportunity. Like I said, we're all professional artists so are used to selling ourselves and aren't concerned about issues of personal celebrity and all that. ---Brett Gaylorhttp://www.etherworks.cahttp://www.homelessnation.org SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Use YAHOO! RE: [videoblogging] Digest Number 1731
Paul mate, I'm not having a pop at you in the slightest. Your video genuinely made me chuckle so good for you, you've obviously got lots of great ideas. But its the aggregators of content who just sit back and rub their hands as all this saleable creativity comes flowing in. I'm absolutely sure you have a great time doing the video stuff for a hobby, but for the people who are sitting on the content pile its not a hobby in the slightest - its a business, and a big business at that. Unfortunately if your bin idea does become a huge moneyspinner, not only do you not get no payment, you won't actually get any credit for it at all - because the BBC terms also take away your Moral Rights, which is the right to be recognised as the creator of the work. So if the bin idea gets sold to Nick Park and wins an Oscar, the credit will say 'Based on an idea by BBC Films'. Just imagine if Nick Park had given his ideas away when he was making silly clay models in his garage...and then watched some other bastard lifting the Oscar. Gutted. If you have any ambitions to doing it for a living (and why not?), then I sincerely hope that an industry exists in future which will provide you a viable income. Under this business model, that doesn't look like its going to happen. My simple argument is this - why shouldn't you get paid for doing something you love? I'm not talking big cash, but why should you have to spend 8 hours per day doing some regular job, then devoting your spare time to the thing you REALLY want to do? That's a definition of a hobby, and hobbies have their own reward which goes beyond money - but to then have someone else making money from your efforts...well, thats just wrong. People like Murdoch isn't being that smart because nothing is actually changing. Take away all the whizz-bang technology and he's simply exploiting forces which have existed since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Classic supply and demand. When the supply of a commodity increases, its price falls. In this case the price is zero, or even less - because unlike the Industrial Revolution, when smart businessmen 'adapted' to change by using children to repair cotton spinning machines (but at least paid them), we appear to be happy to work for nothing. The profit is made by leveraging the IP to a mass audience. As robert a/k/a r suggests, coming from a largely RM culture I am struggling to understand how this whole new Web 2.0 economy works, in that like the dot-com bust, it shows very little sign of bucking the reality that lies behind it - which is the real economy - and the Murdochs of this world are making sure that the new virtual economy retains similar exploitation business models as many aspects of the real one...only worse. Because by handing over your creativity, you're PAYING to produce a commodity, not getting a wage. You're not doing it for nothing - How much does Final Cut cost? Your camera? Your computer? Broadband connection? Mark Getty, the CEO of Getty Images, now the Worlds largest holder of photographic images, said Intellectual Property is the oil of the 21st Century. How right he was. He gets the corporate jet, we pay to work and pump out that creativity like a gushing oil well. Genius. Apart from anything else, I thought the whole idea of this Brave New World was to bypass the 'old media' like Murdoch and the BBC anyway, and simply present your work to a potential audience of millions by simply hosting the work on the Web. No rights rip-offs required. I think the way forward is to start collectively aggregating our own content. Murdoch and the BBC aren't the only game in town on the web. Please be happy for me, I am not in it for the money, that side of things gives me a headache to be honest. I am all about creativity. I wouldn't be angered or disdainful if this video sparked someone's creativity around the world and Bin's became a new character or TV Sitcom, I would be elated, I would be over the moon, that I had given someone an idea. It goes with saying that if you post anything under the Creative Commons License anyway it is quite similar to the BBC license, don't we remix stuff that other people have shot before, same thing, yes? Yep. Studying. Rachel. Jacob. Amusing. Yay for polygamy. Loads fast enough for me. Blue screen effect is a bit hokey, but it looks pretty good-- I mean, it's both inspiration and comic relief, so it works. There's a really minor lighting thing going on on the right side of the foreground image, but if you're not hiding the fact that it's a bluescreen, it doesn't matter. --StephanieOn 3/6/06, DrLinton Hutchinson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Will someone PLEASE check out this video I made and let me know if it comes up? I wouldn't be angered or disdainful if this video sparked someone's creativity around the world and Bin's became a new character or TV Sitcom, I would be elated, I would be over the moon, that I had given someone an idea. It goes with saying that if you post anything under the Creative Commons License anyway it is quite similar to the BBC license, don't we remix stuff that other people have shot before, same thing, yes?
[videoblogging] Re: File size with Sanyo HD1
Me likey the Xacti HD1. Just got it 4 days ago. Its very versatile. I bought a few 4GB SD cards and they work fine. Its not real great in low light, my biggest beef. I have not compressed or rendered anything yet. Just did a show at a local coffee house and will edit over the next few days. I'll link you when its up. All in all I have to recommend it tho. Its alot of bang for the buck. [videoblogging] Re: File size with Sanyo HD1
Okay i did a test. On HD (not Super HD) but just regular 16:9 HD 1 min of video is 44 megs. Sorenson or h.264 should crunch that pretty good. Just for the record, I consistantly watch shows like diggnation, bleeding edge and TWiT Video and they are always a few hundred megs or more. I bounce between Democracy Player (Im on a PC) and Fireant. I just downloaded IM (thanks Steve Garfield for the tip.) but have not adapted to it yet. Democ is my fave interface but still pretty buggy for the PC. Open source tho, so I cant be particular. Enjoy! Cellie --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Garfield [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think you'd want to compress it before uploading. For web and aggregator viewing, a local video producer compresses with H.264. That's his suggestion. It looks really really great. If you are interested in putting a true HD file up on a host for download to a device that will allow you to watch true HD, then you might want to host those files on a Bit Torrent type of site. Just a couple of ideas... You can also export as .mov using an .mp4 codec and make is more universal. Do you have a local network their connected to? (For instance, I have a cable modem that goes internally to a wireless router along with wired ethernet connections. I can transfer across the network between Mac and PC.) -- Enric -==- http://www.cirne.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Frida Kahlo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hi guys I have a technical problem for the mac boys. Can't you use the iPod like a hard drive and simple copy the files from one computer onto the iPod, walk across the room and transfer them onto the Mac? -Josh On 3/6/06, Frida Kahlo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hi guys I have a technical problem for the mac boys.
