I would like to set up some of the FlashMeetings for people to
present, talk about what they're doing and answer questions. For
examples, Casey and Rudy could talk about how they came about with
Galacticast, how it's been going, future plans and such. People could
ask question about animation techniques and such. Bre could talk
about his philosophy of making and modifying objects. Michael Verdi
could talk about freevlog and the projects he's know involved in. Jay
Dedman could talk about the history of videoblogging and the new
things he's doing like swajana.com. And so forth.

I think that format could make those FlashMeetings valuable and
interesting. I'm thinking the Saturday FlashMeetings would be good
for this since people are likely more available to come in on

not be every FlashMeeting, only ones where people setup to present.

Re: [videoblogging] I Want That Last Wimax Mile

2007-01-18 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Oh, yes, you're quite right, Chris. I too feel the bit of pride you mention,
especially on a film or TV set where we're spending out the wazoo. Then
again, those production values command significantly larger advertising /
subscription (HBO) dollars.

I've got my cell phone set up to the Internet as modem via Bluetooth.

Works significantly better than dialup. There's a data cable that would
probably be faster, but I like the idea of wirelessly being connected. Keeps
me more mobile feeling. Was using Google Maps and iChatting plans to meet
from Markus' car while driving lost at Vloggercon. That was cool.

Cingular is my provider. The service upgrade's $30 additional / mo. on top
of whatever other plan I've got.

The configuration to the mac cost me 3 hours on the phone with a tech who
didn't know how to do it, so we went round and round over the course of a
week, but he was available to me via email and business-hours phone call.
They took care of me and I didn't resent the time it took since it's
obviously something not a lot of folks yet do.

Turns out I had to download a bit of software to make it work, but there it
is.

Best,
Jan

Curious about, seeking others opinion on Liveleak.com . Blair mentions

[videoblogging] mefeedia news

2007-01-18 Thread Peter Van Dijck
Hi all,
We've decided to turn over the reins of mefeedia.com to Frank Sinton.

Frank is planning to keep it running as the best place to find
videoblogs, focused on independent videoblogs, and he's putting more
resources into it. And of course he'll respect all user agreements
(ie. he won't spam your emails and such, he'll respect CC licenses,
...). I've talked to him and I believe he's got all the right motives.
He's on this list, you can ask him your questions :)

I made the decision because I just didn't have the time and money
(those servers cost $) to keep mefeedia going. It had grown way beyond
my expectations, it's been getting lots of pageviews and attention and
I just can't support that anymore. Frank is looking to invest more
time and $ in mefeedia so rather than let it die a slow death due to
lack of attention, so we thought that was a good thing.

Meanwhile, I have to thank Devlon Duthie and Mike Meiser for all their
incredible work to make mefeedia what it is today, and for all the
support we've gotten from y'all in the past 2 years!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hello to everyone in the vlogosphere. First of all, thank you Peter

I'm thinking the Saturday FlashMeetings would be good
for this since people are likely more available to come in on
Saturdays rather than the Tuesday FlashMeetings. This would probably
not be every FlashMeeting, only ones where people setup to present.
What do you think?

[videoblogging] Special Vloggers Invite - Channel Frederator Awards Party

2007-01-18 Thread T Shey
For any of you who will be in the LA area next Wednesday, I'd like to
extend you an invitation to the Channel Frederator Awards party at
Cinespace on Jan 24, when we'll be celebrating and thanking the many
animators who have contributed cartoons over the first year of Channel
Frederator video podcasts (which we've also recently made available
online).

Our emcee for the evening is videoblogger and Frederator promo creator
Justin Johnson (http://onetrick.net), and many of us from the Next New
Networks crew will be in from NY and would love a chance to hang out
with you.

Details are up on the site at http://channelfrederator.com -- tickets
are $10 in advance for the general public (and include food and
drinks), but I have a limited number of guest passes I can extend to
members of the videoblogging group, so please email me off-list if
you'd like to come (please don't reply here, as I know everyone's
inboxes are crowded enough). My email's tim at either of the URLs
listed below.

Really hope to we get to see some of you there, and we'll also be in
the area all week if anyone wants to meet up, but can't make Wednesday
night.

Best -- Tim

 Hi all,
We've decided to turn over the reins of mefeedia.com to Frank Sinton.

 Here's a word from Frank:

Hello to everyone in the vlogosphere. First of all, thank you Peter
and Devlon (and the many others involved) for creating such a great
tool for videobloggers. Your hard work and support for Mefeedia shows.
As far as plans for Mefeedia, i was actually looking for your input on
seeing what you would like to see! Please use this group, email me

[videoblogging] Re: Terms of Service post

2007-01-18 Thread Steve Watkins
I would say this problem is in part due to the fact that 'can they
sell or license your video' is worded unclearly, does a yes mean yes
to both sell and license, or just license? It would be better if that
were clearer.

I welcome warmly any guides or other things that can spread clarity on
these issues, but unfortunately the devil is in the detail and I guess
its easy to get it slightly wrong.

Also theres a mistake in the google section, it mentions yahoo!

We have a wiki set up so that people can correct -- or, just as
important, add to -- this Terms of Service comparison chart.

Please have at it:

http://tools.ourmedia.org/index.php?title=TOS_comparison

If you think additional distinctions need to be drawn, as Steve
suggested, jump in and hunt down the appropriate passage and just add
it to the wiki, and we'll put the changes up on the Learning Center.

Let me or jay know if you can't get into the wiki (for first-time
users, a dialogue box comes up to log in -- but the login and password
are right in the dialogue box. This is to prevent wiki spam.)

I'll be talking with Mike H. this afternoon to make sure the chart
accurately reflects the TOS of Blip, which the chart already suggests
is the cream of the crop. :~)

[videoblogging] Re: Terms of Service post

2007-01-18 Thread Steve Watkins
Cool I'll try to help that, but in the meantime I'll waffle about it
here in an attempt to clarify what I think might be true on these issues.

A service being allowed to sell your content is obviously a big thing,
and probably merits its own distinct question.

When it comes to licensing, it depends what sort of terms we mean and
other people think of. But at the same time I dont want to
overcomplicate it.

Well take blip, lets see if Ive remembered their position and TC
correctly. They allow their partners to use your videos, but only
non-comercially. Its easier to imagine why they want this right, than
o try to work out what non-commercial actually means, This is an
ambiguity in creative commons licenses too, with no end in sight other
than some sor tof mutually agreed possible moral framework for whats
deemed ok or not ok.

To use a load of inapropriate metaphores, we could think of peoples
videos as being the blood, and blip as the body. Both need eachother,
all is well, based on the concept that blip is decent. They wont
prostitute your work for profit, but they and their partners may flash
it in the window from time to time to attract attention to both the
body and the blood. Well I dont know if thats quite right, just typing
as I think as usual, and no Im not suggesting such wording for the
guide :p

Now Im thinking about the word sell, and the concept of selling your
work. I guess even that can mean many different things. Selling access
to watch it, selling it on DVD, selling rights to it, selling rights
to slow it on TV, selling rights to advertise on it, seslling
exclusivity. OK ok Im needlessly overcomplicating a nice
straightforward idea, waffle ends now lol.

Cheers

My Subscriptions on Mefeedia:

A little more background grew up in the Boston area. I was
exposed to entrepreneurship at an early age (my dad was a co-Founder
of Think Technologies, maker of Lightspeed C and other products - if
you remember from back in the 80s/early 90s). That motivated me to
go into software and to be an entrepreneur. Some of the startups
that I have been involved in are Fogdog.com, icast.com (defunct),
Business.com, Jamdat Mobile, Clickstar, and Rapport Incorporated.

In between work and the kids, I try to squeeze in some time for my

Agreed.
Now we have a wiki to expand.
The point is to highlights TOS through the lens of what a creator needs to know.

Usually a TOS is written for what a lawyer needs to know.

And very often TOS totally ignores what is important for creator's.
The TOS wiki is the first step in
Educating ourselves and video hosting sites as to the desires of videobloggers.

Hey all,

Since I started videoblogging, I have had this mantra about focusing on the
audience of ten. To treat the audience of my videoblog as a circle of

point. I have had this mantra because I, for instance, did not want to get
lost in some numbers-increasing schemes.

My question to you is: What amount of subscribers do you feel comfortable
with?

Of course, if you make a Show (insert sarcastic tone here), you only want
more and more subscribers. But if you make a so-called personal videoblog,
suddenly having 3000 subscribers might be a very scary thing.

I only partially agree here. You may want more and more subscribers, but I
go back to an old radio trick. I imagine that the camera in front of me is
someone I know very well, and I talk to them, one to one, and that is my one
of my two matras for my videos.

2007-01-18 Thread Scott Lockman
Thanks to all who have taken the time to respond on this thread or to leave
a comment on the Tokyo Calling blog. This first week of vlogging has been an
amazing experience. I feel hooked!

Harold, yes this is the same Tokyo Calling podcast that you would have been
listening to two years ago. I remember discovering Something Happened on
another blog that reviewed both of our early podcasts favorably.

Just a bit of follow-up on the first week. Thanks to recommendations from
group members and Ryanne's H.264 for iPod screencast on FreeVlog.org, I've
finally been able to get a video that looks better on something bigger than
an iPod.

I followed Ryanne's steps on Episode
4http://blip.tv/file/get/Tokyocalling-tc_vlog_004516.mp4and am
generally pleased with the results. I wonder if the 80-90 minutes it
took to compress the video on an MacBook Pro (2GHz with 2GB or RAM) is
normal for an 11 minute piece. The original dimensions were 640x480 as shot
on the Sanyo HD1A and were shrunk down to 320x240. Would I save time in
compressing the final video in iMovie if I shoot in 320x240 instead of
640x480? Any thoughts appreciated.

Best regards,
Scott Lockman

  months.

As a podcaster and not an actual vlogger, I've felt reluctant or too
ignorant to contribute much to this group. Yesterday all that changed.

I am now delighted to be able to call myself a vlogger. The first
episode of the tokyo_calling_vlog was released yesterday.

I'd like to the many kind, thoughtful, and knowledgable folks out
there who have provided inspiration and encouragement - even to silent
lurkers like myself. This group is valuable resource.

  Respectfully,
  Scott Lockman

Has anyone noticed that Myspace no longer allows embed / code in

You can still put it in blogs and bulletins, but a lot of users on
Cruxy
like to put our player into their main profile page and won't be
able to
 do that anymore.

I've tested this with blip code as well and it doesn't work either.

 Sucks.

[videoblogging] Re: Introducing: tokyo_calling_vlog

2007-01-18 Thread Bill Cammack
H264 takes a VERY long time to compress in exchange for VERY
good-looking video, even when greatly magnified.

Shoot as large a frame as you like. There are people shooting in HD
and compressing to 320x240 or 320x180 (widescreen).

Most likely, you have it set on 2-pass, meaning it takes extra time
checking out the file in order to make the best compression. Leave
your settings the same, but make it 1-pass H264 if you can. Compress
the same 11-minute file and see if there are time savings. If so,
then check to see if you're satisfied with how the video looks. If
you like it, keep compressing 1-pass instead of 2-pass.

Another option is to lower your frame rate. If you're shooting 29.97
video, try bringing the frame rate down to 24 or to 15. If you think
the video stutters too much, increase the rate.

A third option is to not use H264 at all. Use mp4 at much higher data
rates. That will be much faster, but the file will end up being a lot
larger and tougher for lesser computers to process.

Harold, yes this is the same Tokyo Calling podcast that you would
have been
listening to two years ago. I remember discovering Something Happened on
another blog that reviewed both of our early podcasts favorably.

Just a bit of follow-up on the first week. Thanks to recommendations
from
group members and Ryanne's H.264 for iPod screencast on
FreeVlog.org, I've
finally been able to get a video that looks better on something
bigger than
 an iPod.

I followed Ryanne's steps on Episode
 4http://blip.tv/file/get/Tokyocalling-tc_vlog_004516.mp4and am
generally pleased with the results. I wonder if the 80-90 minutes it
took to compress the video on an MacBook Pro (2GHz with 2GB or RAM) is
normal for an 11 minute piece. The original dimensions were 640x480
as shot
on the Sanyo HD1A and were shrunk down to 320x240. Would I save time in
compressing the final video in iMovie if I shoot in 320x240 instead of
 640x480? Any thoughts appreciated.

[videoblogging] send me links to your cool videos

2007-01-18 Thread JD Lasica
We're doing something different with Ourmedia: We'll be using our
front page to point people to the coolest grassroots video regardless
of where it resides. The videos don't have to be on our site, they
don't have to live on the Archive's servers. We'd like to showcase a
new lead video just about every day.

All I need is a url of the page with the accompanying metadata, and a
url of where the video lives. (Some with Flash, this is often
impossible, alas.) We'll input the title of the work and your name and
link directly to your blog/site and to the file's hosting site.

It would help if you sent along a screenshot (320x256 or so), but
that's not required. I'll drop you an email when your video gets
featured.

Doesn't have to be new, just well done and engaging. QuickTime or
MPEG4 would be best, but WMV, Flash or Real work too. Oversize vids
(widescreen), etc., won't work with our current setup.

Questions? Lemme know.

thanks!
