[videoblogging] out of the country

2007-06-17 Thread Micki Krimmel
Hey folks!

It was a great pleasure to see (and meet) many of you at Pixelodeon last
weekend. That event was so full of optimism. I feel really lucky to be a
part of this amazing community at this key moment in time. Thanks to the
organizers for putting on an amazing event. And I hope those of you who
couldn't make it check out the site for everything you missed.
http://pixelodeonfest.com. If you're interested you can check out the video
(part 1 of 2) I put together after the event:
http://www.mickipedia.com/?p=900.

Anyway, I'm writing to sign off from the group for the next month. I leave
in less than a week for Southeast Asia where I will be for 4 weeks. I will
be recording some video though I won't be doing any editing while I'm away.
Believe it or not, I'm leaving my laptop at home! Anyway, to help manage my
inbox while I'm gone, I've turned off email notifications for this group. So
if you need to contact me this week, please email me directly at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Do not reply to this email as I won't see your

So that's all. Just wanted to say goodbye and to thank you all for your
amazing inspiration. I've got several projects rattling around in my head

more news with you!

Personally, I love the Xacti. Much better quality video. But that's not the
point. This is a camera that is:

- cheap
- easy enough to give to your grandmother who is technophobic. no manual to
read or confusing settings
- includes software on the device so you can run it on any computer (no
installation!... think internet cafe)
- AA batteries -- much better for field use

A lot of what you do is documentary in nature. Here is a cool site:

http://www.dogme95.dk/menu/menuset.htm

Just a thought for discussion, but I like The Vow of Chastity
because it sets ground rules that could be adopted (with
modifications) in the bylaws of a association (if one is to develop)
of responsible event vlogging. Especially political events. {MY TWO
CENTS IS ENCLOSED IN THESE}.

The Vow of Chastity http://www.dogme95.dk/the_vow/vow.html

I swear to submit to the following set of rules drawn up and
confirmed by DOGME 95:

1. Shooting must be done on location. Props and sets must not be
brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a
location must be chosen where this prop is to be found).
2. The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice
versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is
being shot).
3. The camera must be hand-held. Any movement or immobility
attainable in the hand is permitted. (The film must not take place
where the camera is standing; shooting must take place where the film
takes place).
4. The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable.
(If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a
single lamp be attached to the camera).
5. Optical work and filters are forbidden.
6. The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons,
etc. must not occur.)
7. Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to
say that the film takes place here and now.)
8. Genre movies are not acceptable.
9. The film format must be Academy 35 mm. {MUST BE CONSUMER VIDEO
CAMERAS}
10. The director must not be credited. {THE DIRECTOR IS A VLOGGER AND
CAN BE CREDITED}
Furthermore I swear as a director {Vlogger} to refrain from personal
taste! I am no longer an artist. I swear to refrain from creating a
work, as I regard the instant as more important than the whole. My
supreme goal is to force the truth out of my characters and settings.
I swear to do so by all the means available and at the cost of any
good taste and any aesthetic considerations.
Thus I make my VOW OF CHASTITY.

I watched Sicko (I know, bad man). BUT. As much as you could argue
about Moore's spin, the majority of the film is straight talk from

2007-06-17 Thread Gena
Yeah, that is how I was seeing this camcorder as well. There are many
people who want to shoot video but are fearful of computers and
editing. They have stories to tell but they need an easy user experience.

Point, click and upload is about as much as some of them are going to
be willing to handle. I love my Xacti C40 too but I want to be able
to offer other options to those users that need something simple to
start shooting video.

Simple video does not have to be bad or expensive.

Re: [videoblogging] Rev Share

2007-06-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
It's the old, How many licks does it take to get to the center of a
Tootsie Pop

I'm still not sure about the math at Revver it seems to vary but I am
getting paid.

What I've found on Revver is that shorter videos make more money
because more people tend to watch to the end and click on the ad.
Take for example our video at Revver titled Free Downloads http://
one.revver.com/watch/182008/flv it's a promo that has been viewed
297468 times. It has had 213406 completed views, 27362 ad clicks and
has made $4389.83.

Now on the other hand How to Find Music You Like http://
one.revver.com/watch/119146/flv has had 1363678 views, 53902
completed views, 3087 ad clicks and has made $607.89.

I think this could change as both bandwidth delivery and my content
get better but who knows?

Revver.com has been great to me. They are very cool but I'm curious
how much money I'm leaving on the table by not putting my content
everywhere I can get paid for it. - You know you don't just buy DVD's
at Blockbuster anymore.

But on the other side of that there's also an argument for having
exclusive content that is only available on your site as this will
increase your traffic and allow you to sell advertising there. Take a
look at Ask a Ninja. They got a big deal because their site gets lots
of traffic and they have some really funny content that 12 - 18
year old boys love. I think they have made money at Revver as well.

I'm still curious, is anyone getting paid from BlipTV? Veoh? YouTube?
Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

I've been very happy with Revver.com and I'm getting paid well
(more than my rent) but I'm
curious about other sites and if people are happy with them.
I'll be more than happy to discuss this offline or via email if
 it makes it more comfortable.

 good question.
what i'm looking for is a chart that says if your video gets seen x
amount of times in x days, you get x dollars.

or if you get x clicks, you get x dollars.

tim, would you mind sharing some numbers with us?
i know a lot of people would love to get their rent paidbut how
 many viwers/clicks does this take?

Good for Jerry! for winning this year, then. My girlfriend Zandra enjoys
that series (one of the few online video series she likes, though she's been
exposed to a few more through Pixelodeon), as do I -- anyone know if the
dude behind Jerry! made it to Pixelodeon?

2007-06-17 Thread Harold Johnson
I'm still hoping Matt/WordPress will someday soon be able to publish
my videos straight from my head. But then, I'm a dreamer.

Show in a Box, huh? Sounds like the next-best thing, for now...Thanks
for the reminder, Jay.

I think the WP/blip combo is powerful since blip is so good at
multiple formats (especially now with Pro acccounts).

 check out showinabox.tv.
we need to do more documentation, but the idea is to build a better WP
theme with all the right plug-ins to showcase video better...help
build a community around the videosand figure out an alternative
way to fund consistent video work from the viewers in the NPR model.

 Showinabox community is here: http://groups.google.com/group/show-in-a-box

  web page.

 what browser are you using?
 i suggest firefox.
some browsers (like safari) do not show WYSIWYG very well.

I'll try Firefox. If that don't work, I'll try Mozilla SeaMonkey and
see what that does.

Either way, I'd like to put those episodes I have roll off the RSS
feed due to their age and disk space on my Pod-O-Matic account onto
Google Video if at all possible.

If Google Video doesn't work out due to something like 10/100 (10 min
or 100 MB) limit, then I'll just make do with the LiveVideo versions.

Cheers :D

[videoblogging] Vlogs Sponsorship Needs

2007-06-17 Thread Enric
I'm looking to work on the next version of PledgeDrive from the one
Devlon created for Have Money Will Vlog,
http://www.havemoneywillvlog.com/. This will be part of the
ShowInABox system,

http://showinabox.tv/wordpress/about/

Since this is something you, videobloggers, would be using, I'd like
to describe the current idea for PledgeDrive and ask for comment and
recommendations:

Idea

What is firmed up is that it will be a Wordpress widget that sits in
the sidebar with a donate/subscribe image/icon.

How I see the rest working is:

Clicking the icon will bring up a page for filling in single payment
or subscription. If single payment, then levels of payment or other
entered amount is given.

If subscription, then subscription levels or other entered amount is
provided. Then, the period of payment (such bi-monthly, monthly,
bi-yearly, yearly, etc.) is chosen.

Proceeding goes to paypal where the payment is finalized and returns
one back to the vlog.

If a target amount is setup, then a meter can appear showing how close
the donations/subscriptions are to fulfilling the target value. And a
report of donors with their donated amount can be displayed to the
blog admin(s).

Examples

Jay has provided me several examples of funding on the web:

  Robert Greenwald's BraveNew Films:
https://secure.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/bnf/images/donate.jsp
  Democracy TV:
https://www.participatoryculture.org/subscribe/
  Kiva, loans that change lives
http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businessesaction=aboutid=9582
  SFT Olympics:
https://secure.ga4.org/01/sftolympics

I've looked at Galacticast sponsorthip,

http://www.galacticast.com/support/sponsor/

which is amount with description to name. This is submitted to your
paypal page.

For rocketboom,

http://www.rocketboom.com/sponsorship/

The option is to contact Rocketboom and detailed information and
examples are provided of the benefits of sponsorship.

And blip.tv is also working on a sponsorship model based on the
duckies purchase system by Ze Frank.

Feedback
-
What stands out for me on the net video sponsorship system is that
they're very simple -- click an amount and give name and go to paypal
or just send an email enquiry. So the clarity and simplicity of the
payment/sponsorship system appears to be important. Also the ability
to stylize the layout through CSS, choose images and descriptions for
pyament choices.

What recommendations for the PledgeDrive design do you have that make
sense for videoblogging? This may be from sponsoring a vlogging
activity like a a bike trip through the U.S., subscribing to a weekly
drama, comedy, etc. show, funding a full length movie and so forth.
So PledgeDrive would need to be flexible for a wide range of projects
(some not yet thought of.)

Also, since this involves money, should there be a standard disclaimer
form included?

Thanks,

Enric
