around the 15/7/07 Jay dedman mentioned about [videoblogging]
compressing for iPhone that:
has anyone tried to compress a video specifically for the iPhone?
how do videos look on the phone?

just fishing for experience.

latest QT has presets for iPhone. both look stunning, the one i
played round with seems to have a data rate of around 330 kbits/s,
320 x 240 pixels. I imagine on the iPhone screen they're lickable.

same when when I compressed using preserve aspect

Without needing to use the export to iphone feature, the iphone now
plays most .mov files, including 3ivx, mpeg4 and h.264 [you can surf
rocketboom.com on the iphone without any problems].

However, a couple of weeks ago, we created special interface just
for the iphone:
http://www.rocketboom.com/iphone/

If anyone would like one for their own videoblog, shoot me an email,
we are expecting to release a universal app this week that anyone can
use for their own show.

[videoblogging] Re: compressing for iPhone

2007-07-16 Thread Bill Streeter
I tested my videos out at the Apple store. I clicked on the qt
version link in the vPIP interface that I use on my site and the
movie downloaded and played automatically in full screen--and looked
great. From everything that I've read anything that will play on an
iPod or Apple TV will play on an iPhone. My trick is to compress for
the ipod and change the extension from M4V to the more universal MP4
and they play on every device I've tested on. Don't know if they
play on a Zune though ... but then again I'm not so sure I care if
they play on the Zune.

A page designed specifically for the iPhone might be a good idea,
since you have to zoom in on a page to see links etc on an iPhone.
It might be nice to have a page that is designed so no zooming is
necessary to click movie links.

[videoblogging] Grouper to serve as online talent agency

2007-07-16 Thread Heath
From Yahoo news this morningI love the last line

Out tag line is, 'We're the best content not on television, Felser
said.

Makes me want to put all my videos there just so the tagline will be
invalid ;)

LOS ANGELES - The online video site Grouper, which Sony Corp. bought
last year for $65 million, is exiting the crowded and risky user-
generated video business and focusing on finding professional talent
for Sony's film and TV studios.

The site, which will change its name to Crackle, will serve as an
online talent agency, grooming budding professionals, funding
productions and connecting the best video writers, producers and
directors with contacts at Sony Pictures and a variety of partners,
including the Improv comedy clubs.

The user-generated market is dominated by Google Inc.'s YouTube and
News Corp.'s MySpace, with Yahoo Inc. and AOL, a unit of Time Warner,
also gathering homemade videos.

It is becoming increasingly hard for smaller players to stand out and
deal with the many copyright issues that arise when users upload
unauthorized clips of films or TV shows or use music in the videos
without permission.

It's not a business for us, Grouper founder and co-president Josh
Felser said of user-generated video. The content is rarely exclusive
and it's hard to monetize. Advertisers don't want their content next
to a video of someone jumping off a roof and falling on their head.

Crackle will fund episodic shows or short videos and winners will be
chosen by a combination of editors and user votes.

The creators of top-rated videos will be given funding, ranging from
$2,000 to $20,000, for additional episodes and a chance to pitch
feature film ideas to executives at Columbia Pictures, a Sony company.

The evolution of online video will bring viewers more professionally
produced material, said Sean Carey, senior executive vice president
of Sony Pictures.

Creators will also vie for a chance to pitch TV ideas to Sony
Pictures Television. Animators, too, will get a chance to turn their
short video into feature-length Sony animated films.

Each year, one animated video will be chosen to run theatrically,
making it eligible for an Academy Award.

We're creating pathways to Hollywood and fame, Felser said.

Crackle uses peer-to-peer technology to syndicate content across
other platforms, including AOL and MySpace.

The site also has a budget to promote the content.

Out tag line is, 'We're the best content not on television, Felser

Your server is not configured correctly. It's sending the .mp4 file as
text/plain instead of a more appropriate mime-type (video/mp4 for example).

Contact your hosting provider and have them fix this.

Depending on your host, you may be able to add the mime type yourself using
an .htaccess file entry.

[videoblogging] Re: New Quicktime upgrade and Creative Zen

2007-07-16 Thread mediababe00
I spent the weekend on Apple's site and Flip4Mac's site and read that no one
should
upgrade to QT 7.2 as there are issues. Apple's discussion board claims it is a
F4Mac issue,
but if this is happening to PC users as well, then it extends beyond Flip4Mac.

Just my 2 cents.

[videoblogging] Re: compressing for iPhone

2007-07-16 Thread Frank Sinton
I just got an iPhone over the weekend.

We've been talking about creating a m.mefeedia.com, mainly for the
iPhone but also for other devices.

It is great that the iPhone supports these formats. Flash is a
problem, but since most of the vlogosphere is standardized on
Quicktime formats, I am happy. Supposedly, YouTube has support for
iPhone too. Has anyone tried this?

From reading this conversation, it sounds like we should go with the
iPod RSS feeds that people are producing?

If someone may be subscribed to the regular RSS for, say,
Galacticast, but if they are browsing their Mefeedia Personal
Channel via the iPhone, we would probably want to grab the files
from the Galacticast (iPod) feed. Or do we not even need to worry
about this? Is there a quality/speed issue with going with the .mov
files?

OK, I will let everyone know as I begin testing later this week.

Regards,
-Frank

[videoblogging] Re: compressing for iPhone

2007-07-16 Thread Steve Watkins
I guess it depends whether people are connecting with the iphone via
edge, or using wifi or using itunes on a computer and syncing. Apple
have the lower-res, lower bitrate iphone export option in Quicktime
7.2 because edge isnt very fast, the 500-700kbits/sec 320x240 mp4's
and h264's that a lot of people are standardised on might be painfully
slow to download on edge.

So will vloggers start to create the lower-bitrate versions for
iphones? I guess it depends just how slow edge is in practice, and
quite how many people end up using iphones for this purpose. Its times
like these the idea of an offline aggregator, so people can download
with wifi and watch later, becomes very attractive, but as apple have
locked development on the iphone, they cant do that just with the
iphone, have to use a computer with itunes or whatever.

I suspect the most sucessful sites that cater for video on mobile
devices, will be the ones that transcode footage to device-specific
formats, thus ensuring every video will be watchable. Unfortunately
they will also need to code their mobile portals to work differently
for different devices, as theres so much variation in screen size,
format support, bandwidth etc.

Cheers

Steve Elbows

yeah preserve aspect ratio is a scam!!

365x205 is great for ipod and should work fine without that checked.

working on the iPhone
 though.

 From apple:

 iPhone Video formats supported:

H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps
 640 by 480 pixels
 30 frames per second
Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC
audio up to 160 Kbps
 48kHz, stereo audio
in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps

Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps

 640 by 480 pixels
 30 frames per second
Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps
 48kHz, stereo audio
in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

The first option seems to be the best if you customize your

fussy when it comes to that for some strange reason).

[videoblogging] NEW VLOG - As My World Turns

2007-07-16 Thread Patrick Cook
Hi everyone:

Boy have I have been BUSY this past weekend.

What have I been doing you ask? How 'bout downloading most of my
YouTube videos, transcoding them into Quicktime MP4 format, posting
the MP4 videos on my new vlog and then uploading the MP4 videos to
other viral video sites where I have accounts?

Yep you heard me right. I've taken the idea and concept of AMWOWTTV
(As My Wacked Out World Turns) and expanded it to DOWNLOADABLE videos
for your iPod, iPhone or iWhatever. (Yes Jay, I even managed to
convert your favorite post. You know, the sandwich one. So now you
can save it for posterity for all of eternity on your iPod or maybe
for that new iPhone of yours). :D

I have yet to add the new vlog to directories and add the RSS feed to
the Blogger page, but that will soon change as I'm taking a break
from working on it in order to catch up on some of my email if ya know
what I mean. :D

In the meantime, you can go to http://asmyworldturnstv.blogspot.com/
to see and (If you choose to) manually download the videos.

Cheers :D

2007-07-16 Thread Gromik Tohoku
Hello and thanks for the post, I was wondering how
does one put the embed HTML into an email? What is the
first step to do that?

I understand embedding, but If I used the embedding
code from a source such as youtube or blip, would it
then appear on the email?

Thanks for some guidance on this interesting subject.

[videoblogging] ABC News and Mefeedia

2007-07-16 Thread Frank Sinton
Hi All,

We are very excited to let everyone know that Mefeedia is working
with the ABC News – i-Caught Show and Website to help discover great
videos and report on online video trends, and in particular the
vlogosphere.

Based on some initial conversations that we have had with their
team, they have really liked the subjects Mefeedia brought because
they give [i-Caught] a nice change up from what the typical viral
video expert will talk to.

What does this mean?
They are very interested in the great stories that everyone is
telling through the vlogosphere! Mefeedia will help ABC find such
stories (and, of course, ABC will contact you, the producer,
directly to ask permission to use your video should they decide that
they would like to show it.)

Why Mefeedia?
Mefeedia brings a different perspective than YouTube and many of the
other viral video sites. We help people discover great indie
videos – videos from independent video producers / the vlogosphere.

How can you get involved?
1) Keep producing great videos.
2) Make sure your feed is in Mefeedia (we are looking at the entire
vlogsphere.. but it certainly helps if you are already in Mefeedia's
directory).
3) Fav, subscribe, and recommend your favorite videos on Mefeedia.com

You could, of course, submit your videos to the i-Caught site (after
agreeing to their TOS).

What about the Show versus the Website?
Their website will launch soon. The show will be broadcast at night
on ABC nationwide, and will start with a set number of shows.

Mefeedia will be providing LINKS to some favorite videos to ABC News
(again, ABC won't post without contacting the creator and getting
permission), and links to who we think would be great to interview
on the show, but ABC can not make any commitments as to who will or
won't be on.

We hope to help those creators who would like increased exposure,
and most importantly to bring attention to the vloggers' great
talent and stories to people who appreciate it.

Feel free to contact me directly should you have any questions.
There is also more information on our blog post:

One suggestion. You might wanna pick a site where people *don't* have

What we found out... in our very very limited test... was that .Mac
would display a video in an HTML embed element (in an e-mail).

But GMail would not.

So... some e-mail and webmail system have absolutely no known way of
playing video in e-mail.

But some do.

I don't know of anyone who has done extensive tests. (We only check
.Mac and GMail. So... YMMV.)

Feel free to test out other e-mail or webmail systems, and let us know

[videoblogging] Re: ABC News and Mefeedia

2007-07-16 Thread Gena
I am wading through their Submissions and the House Rules policies and I
would ask any vlogger to make sure they understand what they will gain
and specifically what they will lose if they upload their work to this
site. ABC/Disney is a major broadcasting business.

For example - concerning music rights:

Submissions submitted and/or posted by you contain original songs or
recordings, you hereby represent that you are a member of ASCAP, BMI,
SESAC or any other applicable performing rights society and that all
musical compositions (including lyrics) contained in such Submissions
are available for licensing to us directly from such societies.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, regardless of whether you are a member of
any performing rights society, you hereby grant us a perpetual,
non-exclusive and irrevocable license to publicly perform each and every
musical composition (including lyrics) contained in such Submissions;

or this little ditty concerning rights and compensation:

Without limiting the foregoing, you hereby grant us (and our
licensees, distributors, agents, representatives and other authorized
users),without the requirement of any permission from or payment to you
or to any other person or entity, a perpetual, non-exclusive,
irrevocable,fully-paid, royalty-free, sub-licensable and transferable
worldwide license to use, re-use, reproduce, transmit, print, publish,
display, exhibit, distribute, re-distribute, copy, host, store, cache,
archive, index, categorize, comment on, broadcast, stream, edit, alter,
modify(including, without limitation, removing lyrics and music from any
Submission or substituting the lyrics and music in any Submission with
music and lyrics selected by us), adapt, translate, create derivative
works based upon and publicly perform such Submissions, in whole or in
part, in all media formats and channels now known or hereafter
devised(including, without limitation, on WDIG Sites, on third party
websites, on our broadcast and cable networks and stations, and on our
broadband and wireless platforms, products and services) for any and all
purposes including, without limitation, news, advertising, promotional,
marketing, publicity, trade or commercial purposes, all without further
notice to you and with or without attribution.

For some of you this is a great idea. To be able to say Yes, that is
my work on ABC is cool, no question. However, even if you are willing to
give up all of your present and future rights so that your video can be
aired on ABC (and all their permutations) I'm begging you to
read/decipher the important passages before you upload your stuff.

The short answer is - if you upload to I-Caught you forever lose the
financial rights to your work and it can be used in anyway they see fit
for now, for the future and in any future media format yet to be
invented. Not a dime, franc, euro or centavo.

ABC is not a charity, it is a multi-billion dollar business.

Don't give the master your stuff unless you can live with the
consequences.

Seriously, Read the Contract!

utility to erase the HD,
I tried to use disk utility to restore from a disk image but the
image is greyed out and
cannot be selected. Anyone have this problem? Does that sound like
the image is
corrupted?

Thanks again

I'm not quite sure which disk image or what kind of disk image you
are referring to. The clones I make with CCC are fully bootable-- on
an external drive. No need to use target mode. You can clone your
clone back to the internal drive-- but carefully follow all the
recommended precautions again. If your image is a clone of a Mini
Mac install, Disk Utility on PPC might not see it as a system that it
can install. I'm making wild guesses with limited info. Rob D.

Re: [videoblogging] r.e. Youtube and video views...strange!!

I've tried getting an answer from youtube about this, but no reply.
When I had a video featured in the travel category -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nkub-mlEuts

I posted this on my vlog -

As an exercise in seeing why Youtube is the King of online video, just watch
how many people view my video over the next couple of days.
Current number of Youtube views for the Byron Video is 908. That WILL increase
by 1,000's, just watch!

Anyway since this video has been featured, it's number of views has only gone
up by 20 (928)!! This is despite having been favourited 69 times and commented
on 36 times, rated 55 times. Since it has been featured I've had roughly 6,000
views of my youtube page youtube.com/overlandertv

Now if you look at the other videos featured in the travel category -
http://www.youtube.com/categories_portal?c=19e=1

You will see my views are a bit of an anomaly, with most featured vids being
viewed 1,000 of times.

I just find it really odd!! Has anyone else experienced such anormalities?
A mate told me a video he had on myspace
http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individualvideoid=10269788
went up to approx 28,000 views, and then back down to 26,000

[videoblogging] Re: ABC News and Mefeedia

2007-07-16 Thread Frank Sinton
We brought this up with them. In short, there is very little chance
that the terms will change.

You may have a better chance if Mefeedia personally recommends a
video - at least this would require them to contact the content
creator directly before you have to agree to anything - but i still
doubt the terms will change.

On the plus side, the show will be on primetime and will drive a
significant audience. Even if you do not want to be part of i-
Caught, we hope this will continue to drive traffic to vlogs through
Mefeedia's discovery tools.

For some of you this is a great idea. To be able to say Yes,

my work on ABC is cool, no question. However, even if you are
willing to
give up all of your present and future rights so that your video
can be
aired on ABC (and all their permutations) I'm begging you to
read/decipher the important passages before you upload your
stuff.

The short answer is - if you upload to I-Caught you forever lose
the
financial rights to your work and it can be used in anyway they
see fit
for now, for the future and in any future media format yet to be
invented. Not a dime, franc, euro or centavo.

ABC is not a charity, it is a multi-billion dollar business.

Don't give the master your stuff unless you can live with the
  consequences.
