[videoblogging] need help recovering destroyed wordpress blog

2008-05-25 Thread David S Kessler
hi. i'll try to give you a brief outline of what happened. my
hosting service (Bluefish Hosting, btw) upgraded to a new platform.
This meant migrating all the files to somewhere other than where it
was and working fine. Don't know why. My directories and html files
migrated but none of my databases migrated over to the new platform
and so my wordpress blogs went kaput.
after weeks of phone calls and complaints, i finally got them to
migrate the databases over to the new platform and days later to make
the appropriate wordpress directory associate with the right database.
what was wrong and what they did, i have no idea because they would
not return my phone calls or emails.

Bluefish, btw, used to be awesome. Their support now seems to have to
deal with another company that i should be sewing right now.

if you go to studioscopic.com you will see the blog comes up with all
the stylesheets and everything but none of the links for pages or
archives work. the categories are broken. some plugins like vPIP
seem to work but others like my photo galley plugin don't.

I'm going to keep leaving messages for my hosting support but the site
has been broken for weeks and if I rely on them it will stay broken
for much longer.

does this look like something that i could fix myself? I would very
much appreciate any help.
let me know if you need more info.

ps. don't use Bluefish

i've changed the background color of my blog a few times before but
now when i try to change it in the theme editor I can't seem to do it.

2008-01-27 Thread David S Kessler
i can't help thinking about these things. I know it's just supposed
to be entertaining and it never pays to over analyze a movie like this
but in this case wasn't the whole movie just a gimmick anyway? wasn't
the whole thing just about how clever the filmmakers thought they were
being? so if they were so clever, why did the the characters go into
an electronics store and not consider grabbing a couple extra tapes
and batteries? that's all they would have had to do to keep me from
thinking about how this footage looks edited and how they went 7 hours
without having to change a battery.

but forget all of that. if they were so clever, how did they think
they could get away with making a movie that supplants a plot for a
gimmick. that's never a good idea.

camera and
while they refer to tape in the movie I would strongly suspect
that the
camera is a memory card based device, not a tape camera, and that
they (the
writers) intentionally had the characters use the most common term.

Frankly I was not impressed with the beginning of the movie and
actually
closed my eyes for the first half hour or so. I didn't want to
watch all
the shaky footage .. and was considering leaving the theatre .. but
when the
s**t hit the fan I started watching and they really did a credible job.

There was some times where I couldn't believe that the character
operating
the camera would be 'filming' certain scenes .. and that he would
turn it on
and off .. or NOT turn it on or off .. at certain times .. but
that's where
 suspension of disbelief comes in.

It's a decent monster movie .. I recommend it .. especially for video
 enthusiasts.

[videoblogging] Re: Cloverfield hand held major movie

2008-01-27 Thread David S Kessler
I appreciate the points that you are making. I do think that this
home movie style can influence and inspire in some interesting ways.
I do however have to disagree on some points.
Cloverfield has the appearance of being low budget with all in
camera editing but of course that was not the case in reality, that
was just the premise of the movie. it wasn't edited in camera it was
just made to look that way. even if much of the film was shot on an
HVX, that's not a home movie camera.
Cloverfield had big money special effects. this is a studio film made
by established, rich people, and promoted with a huge budget. This
film cost $30 million to make. yeah, that's low budget for Paramount.

yes, go run with the premise, be inspired. but as you say use the
device to tell interesting stories. that's what truly independent
filmmakers should be doing. if you don't have 30 million to create
Cloverfield you can't get away with repeating the lines What was that
thing? over and over again and expect nobody to actually care what
that thing was.

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Tim Street [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I think Cloverfield does take things beyond the Blair Witch Project
and does a great job of fictional organic Home Video story telling.

The filmmakers have set some ground rules for themselves and they
stick to those ground rules. Everything that happens on that tape
from a storytelling point of view happens in real time with nothing
 other than in camera edits.

I'm envious of what the filmmakers have done with Cloverfield. I've
been exploring fictional organic home video storytelling since I did
For the Love of Julie in 1999 and I Can Still Tell Your Wife Bill in
2001 and I've been waiting for more stories to be told this way so
that it doesn't seem gimmicky. I think Loney Girl 15 does a good job
of this but every so often their characters get a little bit too
cinematic in the production of their videos and it pulls me out of
the story but non the less LG15 is breaking new ground with this type
of storytelling and they are intertwining it with ARG which is way cool.

I really look forward to seeing what new films are created using this
approach to storytelling and how it matures so that it's not seen as a
 gimmick.

If this type of filmmaking is embraced it lowers the financial bar of
entry for what is acceptable for theatrical film releases and
increases the chances of getting theatrical distribution for
storytellers who can't afford a traditional cinematic production.

If you are at all interested in telling stories that are shown on the
big screen I urge you to take a closer look at Cloverfield and think
about what emotionally compelling stories you could tell using this
organic home video approach. There are some very creative people on
this list and I think one or several of us could someday have a
theatrical release by using this type of storytelling.

the electronics store scene came from one characters sole focus to
  get his

this relationship drove the story/path. the character had zero
  interest in
getting equipped to document the devastation they were smothered in.
the character who was filming everything was originally only
  supposed to
  film a going away party.
as the events unfolded, this character did realize the importance of
  the
footage but i am sure he also was not interested in getting more
  equipment
that would allow him to document more than he could with what he had
  (within
story, some unknown SSD camera) and would happily be rescued over
  further
gallivanting around a city under attack by a monster.

how they went 7 hours without having to change a battery.

not sure when the film is supposedly taking place. was their a year
  mentioned?
but a 7 hour batter is not too absurd.

personally, i could ask alot of questions and potential
  inaccuracies... but
  screw that.
  i thought it was fantastic.

their will undoubtedly be sequels and this was just an introduction
  to the
  monster.
more details and plot would be added in future.

I was faced with this, too. I fooled around with blogging software
and then went for a content management system, Joomla. Joomla allows
me to create menu hierarchy of sections, categories, and individual
articles. It freed me from the chronological archive. People can go
to a menu and pull what they want based on their interest rather than
 the chronological order.

I wanted to create something on the order of a coffee-table book of
text and videos on a rather narrow subject. The videos compliment the
text to explore the subject at depth. People go back and forth between
stories based on their personal interest at their own control rather
 than arbitrary categories or chronology.

This is why I got excited about the related video plugin that

When we do a video about Composting, I want all our compost videos to
show upnot be buried in the archive just because they are older.

But then I had another problem. Some visitors were so unfamiliar with
menu-driven web sites they needed the prompt of a thumbnail and some
text description. I made a sticky post like a center panel on the
front page. It was a whole other brain part. It can be seen
 on: http://www.hestakaup.com/

As a visual creator, I want to arrange my blog visually and
 non-linearly.
I think right now, WP, and blogger, and Tumblr all follow the one

My videos are embedded in text articles. Some of the text stories
have five or six videos, others have only one. Joomla with vPIP Flash
videos is very flexible with this.

you can come and see an archive of videos and not just a blog. I
haven't found anything that works for me. every plugin that i find

i'm a filmmaker, not a coder.

hi. so i'm starting a brand new video blog and i'm thinking what i
want besides the standard blog format is a gallery that shows many

i found this one

but it demands that i know some code to set it up and i don't like
that it doesn't use my own thumbnails.

this should sit comfortably on the home page.

anyone know of anything like that?

lots of good ideas!
i'm particularly impressed with David Meade's page. i've never seen a
wordpress site look like that and it sound like he is working on a lot
of the functionality that we are looking for.

it looks like one issue that is always an issue on websites and blogs
is how do you cut down the clutter. I need a page that is both easily
usable and visually inviting. and since we are talking about
information that not meant for a linear timeline and all equally
pertinent there seems to be a temptation to see everything at once. i
think that would repel most of the viewers that i'm trying to reach.

the site that i am currently creating is going to be an archive of
interviews with artists. so for me the thumbnail of the video is
incredibly important. unless someone comes to the site knowing
exactly who's video they are looking for, they will look through the
thumbnails and decide what looks interesting to them but i see that
this can also be a bit overwhelming to see them all at once. I hear
the categories idea but i don't necessarily want to start breaking up
the artists into different categories.

simple, elegant and integrated is what i am hoping for.

Thanks Jay and all

I am actually very surprised that what was really a small personal
project of mine has been acknowledged by so many people in my city and
online (Although it was very surreal to see myself in the newspaper
boxes of every other corner of philadelphia). What is even better is
the many different perspective that people take to it and their
reasons for being fond of it. My intentions were artistic ones, for
the most part and yet I am happy that it is being viewed for it's
social and journalistic elements as well. I really thought that it
would never be seen outside of the videoblogging world. I could not
have known was how it would be taken by the people who live in my
neighborhood and who would most likely have never known about my blog
without the local papers writing about it. the feedback from my this
offline community has also been very positive.
thanks vloggers for supporting me from the beginning. My original
intention was only to keep it going for a year. I've decided to keep
the project going after the year is up in December. It may not be as
regular as i was trying to make it before but i think it is worth
further exploration.

Hi Andrew,
thanks for looking and for your kind words. as for my compression, I
pretty much followed the freevlog tutorial on making h.264 mov files
completely, with a couple of changes just based on the fact that i
like things big and beautiful. my videos are 520x390. i set the kb/s
  to 750, 30fps. mono audio AAC, 92kbps.
I do occasionally make still frames from the video but very often what
looks like a still is actually just video of nothing moving with the
camera on a tripod. for me at least, there is a significant, if only
  subconscious difference.

   Hi David:

Your work is absolutely poetic. Mixing stills and video really adds
to the drama in my opinion. The quality of the video is also
excellent.

The audio track is exceptional and gives the pieces added strength.
The intro is also beautifully done. I also experienced no
skipping at
all when playing them back, which happens with some other sites. Can
you describe the compression you used to create the .mov files?

   All the best,

Hi video bloggers. I was introduced to your group only
yesterday and
already i see how great it is!
a number of people here have already gone to my video blog
project and
have left some incredible comments. Thank you.

I am a fine artist, originally a painter, who has found new
inspiration in experimental and documentary film making. Since
January I have been working on a documentary video project
that has
taken the form of a vlog and I am allowing this awesome medium
to help
shape the process and the outcome.

My video blog is a somewhat abstracted, meditative and
intimate study
of the people and the area of Philadelphia under the EL tracks
where I
currently live.

I'm excited to be part of your community

[videoblogging] Re: Indonesia videoblog

2007-06-17 Thread David S Kessler
Hi Pinot. Just watched the video under the trains. I love that
child-like sense of curiosity, you just wondered what it would look
like so you did it. that's awesome. plus you are very brave to put
your camera in that situation.
