[videoblogging] PodCamp Atlanta

I've decided to be on the vlogging panel at PodCamp Atlanta (coming up

videoblogging. It would be cool to see some familiar faces there. If
anyone at all can come out and help represent, it would be GREAT! I
think they are even still looking for people to be on the panel.

[videoblogging] Does anyone use .mac for their video podcast?

2007-01-26 Thread Erin Nealey
Hey all! I could use an expert opinion here :) I have recently joined
the video team at my church, which I am really excited about! My
church is pretty high tech and they do all kinds of video projects
that need editing, and things like that. They have a podcast, and are
really interested in starting a video podcast now, which they are
interested in having me help with! So this wednesday, I am going to be
telling them all about my experience in videoblogging and how I can
help them set up a video podcast of their church services.

Anyway... I noticed that all their podcasts are published via iWeb
from a .mac account.

http://web.mac.com/shandonmedia/iWeb/Site/Podcast/Podcast.html

There has been someone in charge of that, and I'm not sure if they
want to continue using this method for their video podcast as well,
but I have to think (and this is where I need an opinion) that using a
.mac account for a video podcast wouldn't be the best option in this
case. On one hand, it's not like they need to have commenting set up
and things like that, but is there not also a space limit with .mac
accounts? I'm sure they would not be opposed to using a free service
for video hosting if it would be just as good with unlimited space.
What I really want to do is tell them about blip.tv which has the
added benefit of converting the videos to flash as well!

So I guess I'm asking for thoughts on this. Does anyone on here use
their .mac account / iDisk for their videos and what is your
experience with this and is there an advantage. Thus far, I wouldn't
know, since I have yet to pay for hosting. Go Blip! :)

Thank you all SO MUCH. I can't believe all who have donated :)

Apparently, only a verified paypal user can accept money and my
husband is the verified paypal user with our bank account :) So
regrettably I had to deny all the payments.. which really stinks :(

So, for all of you who did donate.. if you would like to re-donate,
you can just simply paypal me money as a service to this email
address which is my husband's: redeemedbyhim(at)sc(dot)rr(dot)com. I
HATE to ask all of you to do it all over again. Paypal confuses me

The time has come for my one year vlogiversary! I'm an avid lurker,
but rare poster on this group. When I do post, it is never for
self-promotion, which is why it feels strange to do this. (Sincere
apologies in advance if I'm out of line). My idea of what I would like
to do for my one year video is put together a montage of sorts of some
of the people who watch my videoblog and their thoughts about it. What
I am asking for is 15-20 second clips of what do you like, dislike,
which videos are your favorites and why etc... If you would be so
kind, I would love to hear from you in video format. It would be neat
(at least for me) to look back on this year, not only from my
perspective, but from others. Just looking for small 15-20 second
clips of your thoughts. Email me if you are interested, with a link to
your video. You can also send me files via ichat/aim. Thanks in advance!

Definately an introvert. I don't even have to take the test to know

How many of you are introverts, and how many are extroverts?

 Some detail:
An introvert is someone who is re-energized by being alone, but when
they spend a lot of time around people, they feel drained and maybe
 anxious afterwards.

An extrovert is the opposite: energized in the presence of others, but
drained after a weekend in isolation.

Most people are somewhere in the middle. Note that this has nothing to
do with shyness or stage fright/stage presence.

I would like the lurkers to respond, too, if you all don't mind (since
otherwise the results will naturally be skewed towards the extroverts,
introverts being more likely to lurk on forums). Where do you put
yourself in the introvert/extrovert spectrum? [If you've taken the
Meiers-Brigg personality test, you pretty much know already]. And if
you're willing to mention it, where is your videoblog?

I'm interested to know if there's a higher percentage of one
personality trait or the other, and I'm keenly interested in knowing
if introverts and extroverts make different styles of videoblogs.

Also, if you're the kind of person who adamantly hates labels like

Yes, I do this a lot! Not a lame question :) I just save my intro as a

[videoblogging] Re: Matching music to video?

2005-11-22 Thread Erin Nealey
Freeplay Music does exactly this, unfortunately for video
blogs/podcasts they are not free (I learned the hard way on this). I'm
assuming you're looking for stuff for your videoblog so this wouldn't
help you on that, but in case not, there are some instances where you
can use them (for free). Read over their terms of use carefully... it
can be confusing. Their name is definately misleading!

[videoblogging] Re: the continuing frustration

2005-11-21 Thread Erin Nealey
Hope this isn't too far off the topic of the thread.. but there is
indeed a forum over at vlogdir.com. I, for one, think it would be
really cool to use that as a means of communication as well.
Organizing messages into different topics makes it easier to find an
answer to a question you may have, rather than searching through
thousands of messages. A lot of things get covered several times here
because people have not seen the previous discussions. Unfortunately,
not all that many people have taken advantage of it. You can even
embed video, audio, images as well as media enclosures from rss feeds
right into your messages making it possible to have video discussions.

http://vlogdir.com//forum/index.php

Erin Nealey
Mom's Brag Vlog
nealey.blogspot.com

The high volume of traffic on the list is a nightmare, I occasionally
harp on about forums as an alternative, but no alternative to this
list seems to have attracted many people to talk as much as is done
here. Its a shame because a lot less stuff would be ignored if this
place was a forum, people would be able to respond to links with a one
word prely such as 'cool' without fear of anybody moaning, and the
original poster would have some feedback and a warm glow inside.

Just downloaded the trial of this program and tried it and like it a
lot! This opens up a whole new way for me to archive now! Using the
one-step DVD option of iDVD, you could back up raw footage on a DVD to
edit later. Then you can re-use DV tapes thus saving money! Love it!
Maybe this accident of deleting a movie, happened for a reason :) I'm

[videoblogging] FYI, Outcome of my Freeplay Music Ordeal

2005-08-08 Thread Erin Nealey

Hey all,

Just thought you'd like to know... the Freeplay Music website has been
updated and now #3 under the terms is more specific:

3. Private Non-Commercial Use (Non-revenue generating or associated)
Private use does not include any broadcast use - web, blog, podcast or
other.

I was glad to see that it was changed. Had those few words been there
in the beginning, I wouldn't have made that mistake. Anyway, this
hasn't all been for nothing!

Cheers,

[videoblogging] Taking my videos down (Freeplay Music discussion)

2005-08-05 Thread Erin Nealey

From: Stephanie Bryant [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu Aug 4, 2005 9:50 am
Subject: Re: [videoblogging] Re: Freeplay Music: Warning

Erin, this whole discussion has really helped me, actually. I am not a
Freeplay Music user. If I were, at this point I would consider such a
letter to be a Cease Desist order, take down the offending music,
and let them take me to court if they really needed the $200.

Hey all,

I hate to be keeping this discussion lingering around but wanted to
let everyone know what's going on. In regards to what Stephanie wrote,
and what others have said on and off list to me.. I've started to
wonder if maybe I am being too apologetic about this whole thing.
(Truth is, I've always been that way, and am quick to take blame and
apologize for things in order to keep peace and avoid confrontation).

Anyway, after talking extensively with my husband about this.. we have
decided not to pay the entire amount to Freeplay Music. To be fair, I
am going to offer to pay for the music as if it were pro-rated for a
year. This afternoon, I will be taking down all my videos containing
complete selections of Freeplay Music (6 in total). They will still
be on the archive, but I will be requesting they be removed from there
as well. Anyone know who best to contact at IA to do this? Could IA
get in trouble as well for continuing to host them? I would hate for
that to happen.

I keep wrestling with myself as to if I am doing the right thing or
not... but I have heard from more people who are of the opinion that I
should not pay. I would gladly pay the money if 1)they didn't make it
so easy for people to make a mistake. You don't even have to read the
terms in order to download the music. Even when you do read the terms,
anyone could make the mistake of reading Private Non-Commercial Use
(Non-revenue generating or associated) and stop there, thinking they
were safe. In my opinion, a much better way of making sure people
weren't abusing this is to have someone register on the site and have
them actually check a box that says they agree to terms. 2)The name,
in and of itself, is misleading. For most ways this music is used, it
isn't free at all. You see the name Freeplay Music and can
immediately start downloading. Not a great idea if you ask me.

Anyway, not that anyone will probably care... but a lot of my most
recent videos will exist no more. I will probably try and fix them and
eventually re-vlog them, but I'd rather be focused on posting some new
content for now.

If someone from IA can get in touch with me off list... I can give you
the list of videos I need to have removed. Sorry if this is a hassle.
I just don't want anyone else to get in trouble.

That begs this question.Erin, do you sell ANYTHING on your
website (or even the place where your videos are stored)? If so,
that could be where you got stung. I *don't* make any $$$ from my
podcasts OR the place where my podcasts are stored (Not only that,
but Google hosts the page via its Blogger service and the IA is used
for storing the podcasts themselves and providing the bandwidth
neccessary for people to download them), so I'd bet I'm pretty much
 safe *knocking on wood* :-)

[videoblogging] Re: Freeplay Music: Warning

2005-08-03 Thread Erin Nealey

Steve - Yeah, as said before, it was my neglect of checking things out
completely before using their music. I never denied that. One reason I
feel funny about others helping me out with the bill! I just assumed
several things... and went to their site based on recommendations from
other websites for free music. I just wanted to post a warning
because I've seen others of you use it, and wondered, do any of you
really pay $25/song/year? I guess I thought maybe I was
misunderstanding the terms because I can't see anyone paying that who
is just using it for fun. Anyway, if any of you were ignorant like me,
now you know! :) Thanks Steve.

 2. Local, regional, or any non-licensed cable television use
 3. Television use premiering outside the US
 4. All Radio Use
 5. Direct-to-video, DVD, CD, CDR DVDR or other including replication,

 6. Non-Broadcast Multi Media Use (Live events, Power Point
 presentations, trade shows/conventions, etc.)
 7. Commercial Web Site Use (to promote a business, product or service)
 8. Personal Website Use (Non-Commercial)
 9. Books, Magazines, Games, Electronic and Toy Use
 10. Shareware / Freeware
 11. Greeting Cards / Internet Email
 12. Podcasting /Blog Use
 13. Ring Tones
 14. Religious Use (most)
 15. Non-Profit (most)
 16. Film Festivals / Competitions

Then Freeplay Music requires a signed license agreement and a license
fee payment as described in the Freeplay Music Rate Card.

[videoblogging] Re: Freeplay Music: Warning

2005-08-03 Thread Erin Nealey

Pat - I have used 6 complete songs from Freeplay Music. They did not
ask for the web address of my site, so I did not give it. I didn't
count two more of them where I only used 10 seconds of audio at the
beginning for the intro.. which would have totalled it up to $200. Is
that wrong do you think? I guess if he decides to visit my site and
thinks I owe him for those, I'll have to pay. This was all for past
violations.. including one that hadn't even been up for 24 hours. The
terms are all clearly written.

I've been thinking about this for the past two days now. What upsets
me about this site is first of all, the name. Secondly, it's way too
easy to just go and start downloading without looking at the terms. I
think they should have you register on their site and make sure you
have read the terms before you download anything... maybe even a popup
that forces you to read the terms...? You could even pay as you
download. I really can't see many people willing to pay this kind of
money for using this music on a personal website/blog/podcast. It's
almost like it's set up to trap people. I've heard back from several
of you off list who are making the same mistake I made... so it's not
just me.

Anyway, I'm still upset about this as you can probably tell... I'll
stop now. If any of you are using Freeplay Music, unless you are
willing to pay $25 a pop, I would suggest taking it down!

One thing I've learned from all of this... Why not help the people who
are putting free music up for us to use? They get credited, and we get
free music. Who can lose? There is plenty of podsafe music out there.

ErinHow many tracks have you used in your video blog to be hit up
for $200? I only use the one for my open and close and a 30 second
cut of another for my political rant (and even that is only when I
have one). Also, did they hit you up for past violations or did they
just say something like Give us $200 and you can use all the tracks
you have on every video blog post you want for a whole year and
call it even?

[videoblogging] Re: Freeplay Music: Warning

2005-08-02 Thread Erin Nealey

The tragic part is that by trying to do the right thing, Erin is now
being punished. Erin would almost guaranteed get away with using
copyrighted music that she ripped from a CD she bought, but by
chipping in to the Freeplay Music system and then misunderstanding
their business model she is now forced to pay.

Thanks Raymond, yes.. I was just trying to do the right thing! Anyway,
I made a post on my site today about what happened with links to
Freeplay's Terms and Agreements. When I realized my error about the
fee, I immediately started taking down my videos. Now that I know I
have to pay, I figured I might as well put them back up. A few of them
are coming back through ANT again. My apologies. Anyway, I'm not
trying to attack Freeplay.. just don't want anyone else making the
same mistake.

Strange.. I do the exact same thing you do, but for some reason I
still have a problem. Does this mean everyone needs to go find the new
links and manually change them? I've begun doing that, but I'm not
sure if I'm wasting my time. I'm guessing the links aren't going to
change back to what they were. ARG!

 What Schlomo Does:
 1 use ourmedia uploader

3 use the final link from IA (not the first redirect link.
