stats by 9:00am CST. Your feeds never went down and we haven't lost any

[videoblogging] Video Podcasting to Drive 2.9 Billion Internet Video Market

2005-10-20 Thread James A. Donnelly
via podcasting news:
Video Podcasting to Drive 2.9 Billion Internet Video Market
October 19, 2005

In-Stat, a technology research firm, is predicting that video content
services will become a leading-edge portion of all premium
subscription services offered via the Internet. By 2009, non-adult
video content delivered as subscription or pay-per-download over the
Internet will have a worldwide retail value of US$ 2.6 billion, the
high-tech market research firm predicts.

The video desires of most consumers will continue to be served by
free-to-air broadcast TV, and by pay TV services like Cable TV and
Satellite, says Gerry Kaufhold, In-Stat analyst. But a thriving
premium video market will develop over the Internet. Really Simple
Syndication (RSS), audio podcasting, and upcoming video podcasting
initiatives will certainly drive demand for lots more video on the
Internet. Apple's announcement that brings ABC's Desperate Housewives
onto Apple's iTunes service marks a major turning point for video over
the Internet.

Research Highlights:

Companies that provide video content will have multiple opportunities
to earn revenues by:

* Developing stand-alone Web portals that sell subscriptions directly
* Partnering with a few key web portals or search engines and
sharing in the revenues
* Working with content aggregators to place video offerings into a
pool of licensed content
* Providing Internet video content to Pay-TV services
* Repurposing content and re-routing it to partners in the mobile
telephone industry

Yeah,
I agree.. I think a printed form would be good for the group.
The original deal, as someone said, Gave Us Credibility.
We should come out with a printed form. Our own version...or...who
knows maybe someone else will pick it up.
The web site... wiki could be part of what we were working on before.
Maybe as long there is a mediator. Otherwise it could become a bloody
mess.
**THE RIGHTS TO THE BOOK. They SHOULD have released all rights when
they decided that they didn't want to do the book anymore.
WE as the authors own the rights, until they put it in print. Then
they would own the rights.

Will we be stuck with the term video podcasting? God I hope not. Of
all of the terms I've heard for videoblogging, this is the most
 cringe worthy in my book.

[videoblogging] Apple ipodcast?

2005-09-15 Thread James A. Donnelly
Apple has held discussions with recording companies about licensing
music videos for sale at $1.99 each, the Journal added.

Meanwhile, Apple filed for a trademark this month on the term
ipodcast. AppleInsider.com reported that the company requested
trademark ownership in several filings on Sept. 4 to the U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office. You can read the applications here and here.

The term ipodcast is not common in the world of podcasting.

I went to install the new version of of iTunes 5, and it said it was

Yeah the datarate on that clip is more like 2000. This is probably the
known 3ivx bitrate bug. If you have QT7/Tiger then it appears 3ivx
gets confused and doesnt honour the bitrate that you put in the box in
 dualpass mode.

3ivx fixing this bug themselves is the proper solution, but its been
nearly 4 months since Tiger came out, so I dunno whats happening there.

Ive never done any 16:9 stuff but I guess you might want to consider
cropping out the black borders - right now I think it is actually
encoding those black areas, wasting a bit of your bitrate. And for me
personally Id like to see your content without the black borders, ie
when quicktime plays it, the quicktime window itself goes to 16:9
aspect.

 Cheers

[videoblogging] Re-inventing TV? sounds familiar

Take a look at this!!! Here's a clip from wired.
Between blog links and BitTorrent downloads, hundreds of thousands of
people watch clips online each day rather than on TV. In other words,
in form if not in tone, Stewart's Daily Show offers a glimpse of what
all TV may one day become: something we can consume in many
distillations, at a time, place, and device of our choosing.

I heard my first critique about using vlogging to make money last
night at a special event at the Apple Store in SoHo. The presenters
ran a film/video two-day workshop ($495 to $595 for 16 hours hand-on
instruction) which seemed to be the reason for their presentation.

They said they had gone to a website that sold magic tricks.
Instead of descriptions, you clicked on the picture of the trick and
saw a short 30 second or 60 second video of the magic trick being
performed.

They seemed to know virtually nothing about vlogging. However,
their description of Internet video being used as a sales tool for a
product is certainly something that is going to grow. Internet video
will be co-opted and used as insertions into web advertising on a
regular basis in the very near future.

 Hey Mike,
This is pretty much a flame. Don't take it personally, I don't

really important point that I didn't want to let slide.

Personally, I think that quote above tells me your looking at

you
to a life of producing complete and utter bullshit. Listen, if
your
stuff hit the right demographic and was bland enough you'd be on
the

low
budget imitation of bland, mindless crap. That doesn't seem like
a
 very good business plan.

Here's my suggestion: you and your colleague should go get
yourselves
on the radio or TV if that's what you want. If, on the other
hand,
what you really want is to podcast or videoblog, I have a few
places
to start: 1. Brainstorm some good ideas about content and forget

about good ideas for underwriting. 2. Better yet, fuck
brainstorming, if you're creative you probably have some stuff
you're
just dying to do - do that instead. 3. Quit lurking around and
just
get started. Then get better at it.

I completely agree with this. But one thing bothers me.

Where is all the old stuff?

People have been making great short movies and video for many years.
They have been showing them to friends, at local clubs, and

distribution is as easy as uploading a file to the archive (or any

Have we really let all that great creativity just go to waste? Tapes
worn out and/or thown in the trash before they could be copied? I
fear
that many of the most active amateur videomakers from the 1980s and

How can we act to save all this great stuff, before it's too late?

if it is animation that has a lot of flat fields of colour then the

if it is 3D and more film like, then yes, compression will be hard

noise

compress. add noise in compression, drop frame rate, screen rez,

 ok,

 1. use a dual pass codec (eg 3ivx if you don't want h.264)
 2. do not set manual keyframes let it set keyframes naturally
 3. funky transitions are funky, but require lot of bandwidth and
these are always data spikes. this is why use variable bit rate codec
with 2 pass since the codec can work out where it needs the data (eg
your talking head bits are much lower in requirements than animated
 transitions).

 4. the only other thing is a lot of the footage which isn't yours is
prob. already compressed. compressing compressed stuff you're on a
hiding to nothing. it already has artefacts in it (noise), the codec
is optimised to hide noise, so when there is noise and it needs to
deal with noise it will become noisier (this is very visible in the
band footage where the 16 x 16 blocks are clear, this is probably
 result of compressing the compressed).

I love it! Any chance you could post a bigger (hi-res) version of

I could probably make a 640x480 version by then.
 And encode with higher bitrate.
 Glad you liked it!

Ach, Peter, this is a lovely idea - perhaps as replacement for most

Very, very cool Peter. I'll be using this shortly.

Sorry for the plug - I launched a new feature today that I thought I

It lets you add random amounts of thumbnails (linking to the
permalink) of any feed to your blog. So you can do an archive, a
sidebar with the latest x videos, and so on. What do you guys think?
