 RemyC.

RemyC, I had a few problems...

I went to:

   http://www.remyc.com/Scion66_riseshine.html

and just saw a big pink square on the page, no video.

I then tried to validate the page:

URL:http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A//www.remyc.com/Scion66_rise%26shine.html

It failed validation. Many (ok, most) pages on the web do, but it helps
to write valid html when it comes to fixing problems with your pages.
(Also note that using an ampersand '' in your page name might not be a
good idea, some browsers/services may have problems with that.)

Anyway, I viewed the source of the page and found the video here:

http://www.remyc.com/riseshine466.wmv

(Again, avoid using '' in file names if you can.)

The server is sending this file as 'text/plain' when it should be
'video/x-ms-wmv' (This is what tells the browser to use an application
that can play WMV files.)

The server is running Apache, so either you or a server admin could fix
this by adding in an .htaccess file with the following:

AddType video/x-ms-wmv .wmv

So that any file with an .wmv extension would be served properly.

If this is over your head (it is to many people) is there a server admin
or techie who could help you with it?

[videoblogging] Re: Vlog Newbie needs assistance!

2005-10-02 Thread LeanBackVids.com
Yeah, that is annoying but it is not nearly as bad as when you go to a
vlog's homepage that has every posts loading an embedded video. That
is cause for an instant click on stop and back.

Most blogging software supports a post summary and a post body. We
use the summary on all non-post pages as well as our feed. It
includes a photo and teaser text that link to the post. The post body
is displayed only on the individual post page and includes the
embedded video and the same teaser text, along with an extra content.

Oh, and we use a JavaScript function to write out the video code
because it helps to avoids invalid XHTML.

I'm working on building a separate CMS to allow extra content to be
associated with WordPress posts. For example, I'd like to associate a
video, a photo thumbnail, a larger photo, amazon products, etc. The
cool part is that the hand-coding of photos and embedded video could
be dynamically generated from the new CMS. Rather than build all this
into WordPress, it seems much easier to build it in parallel.

While you're not wrong per se...

Embedding the video in the webpage gives a great user experience, but as
you say it has two issues:

  1. The video URL is hard to find. This is useful when people want to
remix or quote your video.
  2. Feedburner doesn't pick it up (I think mefeedia still picks it up?)

Anyway, it's not an either or scenario. The best way in my opinion is to
do both: Embed the video directly in the webpage, but also provide a
download link.

For examples see:

  - http://mnstories.com/ (down at the moment)

And of course use things like quicktime poster frames to avoid having ten
videos load on the same page.

I use WordPress for LeanBackVids.com and we're able to declare a media
enclosure without having to link directly to the file. Even if I do
not add the enclosure, WordPress is ususally smart enough to do it for me.

Not sure about the obvious permalink though. Either way, we've
never noticed a problem. Personally, I'd recommend vloggers embed
their movies as well as provide a directly link (maybe at the bottom).

This should offer better ascetics from the embed vs. direct link or
popup... and the RSS functionality will still be the same.
