FireAnt has BitTorrent baked into the Windows version.
I actually think we've rather quietly developed one of the best
interfaces for BitTorrent yet.
Here's why... when you download a video via BitTorrent, it downloads
just like any other file. No special knowledge required. Then once its
finished downloading, the magic happens: you hit the play button and
instantly you are watching a video!

Now publishing Torrents is another story... the best solution I've
seen so far is Prodigem. If you haven't looked at Prodigem in a while,
definitely check it out!

Perhaps there is a way to build off of existing infrastructures? (e.g.

could do it that way..On 2/17/06, davecircumnavigator [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

In a way, to do something like this requires that at least one person set it up and manage it. That's not a lot of work if it's just one server for a few people but would get to be a job if it got bigger. It would just be cool if someone like Blip did it and we could just get behind them. It would be nice if you could host a domain and wordpress or MT blog there too.

Re: [videoblogging] Server Cooperative -- wanna start one?

2006-02-18 Thread Michael Sullivan

A question I'd be asking, whoever you decide to buy server space from,
is what kind of speed difference you'll see among all the different
options. see, this is pretty key, no?i mean, there are 3 issues. storage space, monthly bandwidth allotment and SPEED! The latter is actually the main issue since the former 2 issues have been resolved for some time now (ourmedia, blip and dozens of others). But what is causing frustration in the vlogosphere? SPEED! So I ask, what does a $10 per month Dreamhost hosting service get you as far as mb/sec pipe?
Clint? Anyone know? I couldnt find that spec after briefly browsing dreamhost and other hosting provider sites. thanks for any insight on this.regardless. we have options today...all beeing discussed here. its nice to have reasonable options for vodcasting. these are good times. but will these times last? will dreamhost always be so generous? will blip get proper funding? will relying on companies be better than relying on concentrated consortiums of vloggers?
hey, either way, its a good conversation to have. nothing should be discouraged. this is an age of experimentation. we are all experimenting. i'd love to see ourmedia get funding and evolve. i'd love to see blip continue its success and get funded and help the culture. i'd love for 5, 10, 15 new similar projects emerge that respect the vlogosphere as blip and ourmedia do.
i'd love to see traditional web hosts continue to offer more space and bandwidth and performance. i'd love to see consortiums of content creators and community services work together for the same purposes. Its an ecology and we need ALL of these options. nothing should be discouraged. not here.

Because such a small percentage of the general population knows how to use those things. Until it becomes seamless, where you just click the link and the video plays, those things aren't really that attractive to me. I mean, my parents wouldn't be able to watch any of my videos anymore, which would probably be a good thing. Unless your audience is made up entirely of internet geeks, you won't be able to reach them using these things. Yet. Someone will come up with a transparent usage of BitTorrent. Dijjer is close. But close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades.
