How much storage for each person?
how much bandwdith?
how would stats work?
If you got a Dreamhost dedicated server for $150 monthly + $150 setup:
-30 GB storage total
-4 TB data transfer
-Stats are given for each separate domain, no problem there.
So...if 10 people:
1st month = $30
Each month after = $15
3GB storage
400GB data transfer
----
Or the mega server at Dreamhost for $475 monthly + $475 setup:
-175 GB storage total
-10 TB data transfer
Say you get 30 people:
1st month = $31.67
Each month after = $15.83
5.8 GB storage
300 GB data transfer
Hmm, those bandwidth amounts don't look so hot compared to the 1TB you get when you buy a cheap hosting plan at Dreamhost. On the other hand, I don't know how many people are actually pushing 1TB per month. Maybe the thing to do is only accept people into the co-op that you know won't go over the limit. Otherwise I think things could get tricky, setting bandwidth controls on individual domains etc.
You'll need someone to monitor and admin the server. Maybe it's a rotating volunteer position?
A question I'd be asking, whoever you decide to buy server space from, is what kind of speed difference you'll see among all the different options.
I hope this stuff takes off. It's a good idea.
I just happen to be researching all these things this weekend.
With that said, if anyone knows any kind millionaires who want to fund a project, please have them make out a check payable to Adam Quirk.
Ok,
