The forum side of it is configurable, chat works as a plug in and

What I want is a bridge between RSS, Twitter, threaded discussions,

 I want a non-corporate community-owned place where I can go, where
there are lots of online video people, where I can:

 a) post links to things of interest (i do that here sometimes)
 b) Bookmark videos I like (harder to do that here)
 c) chat in asynchronous twitter style but with preserved threads that
allow more than just statement response end
 d) talk about more serious internet video things (i do that here)
 f) Bookmark whole sites/channels/videoblogs, like a vlogroll, but much
larger, and with an aggregated directory of all sites for everyone to
 browse, in categories.
 g) Form groups for different types of people/sites/channels/videos/
 interests
 h) post other types of content - photos, etc
 i) a place for people to come up with coordinate collaborative
 projects and challenges like vbweek
 j) an archive like the videoblogginggroup Wiki for sharing advice

Oh my god, this sounds like Facebook for online video people. But I
HATE Facebook. So how come? I think what I hate most about Facebook
is the lack of boundary between people from different parts of your

Yeah - I used Ning to set up Navlopomo a couple of years ago - we just
used it to embed videos in discussion threads - but a lot of people
didn't like the interface for some reason.
My main objection to it was the fact that everything was locked in the
Ning system. If Ning went bust or the servers went kaput, we could
lose everything. I'd prefer to use something that was Open used
exportable data.

The only downside to something more open like a drupal install is that
someone (or even better, a couple of someones) need to commit to running /
maintaining the thing. Also possibly paying a little bit once in a while if
it has a domain name, etc.

But I agree - it DOES sound like the next iteration of this videoblogging
group. And I like those ideas!

Ning never changed their email notifications. You get told there's a
message...and then must go to the site to read it. Ive always felt
Ning groups are way too busy with noise.

It would be interesting to have a more full featured group site. Ive
always wanted better archives and ways to document the smart things
people post. Ive tried to do it in a very limited way the past several
years on this wiki: http://videoblogginggroup.pbwiki.com/ It's open to
anyone to add/edit.

As you've mentioned, we bring it up every so often to move to a forum
or website. Rupert, I think you stated a facebook group for
videoblogging a couple years ago. It's really about someone owning the
process. Plus, it's been said that email lists push these messages to
my inbox. If I had to remember to visit a site, I'd be less inclined
to do this unless it was SUPER compelling.

The interesting thing about this group is that it comes in waves. Some
months it seems dead. Then someone pops up and starts a really
interesting conversation. Every six months or so, some new people join
that inject life back into older conversations. People subscribe and
unsubscribe depending on their mood.

As Verdi said recently, many of us seem less inclined to do
development work, or make work. Tired of building plugins and
websites and customizing opensource flash players. Seems things
quieter here because, I think, many of us are just creating. A lot of
the boundaries are gone. That's a really good thing.

I was going to suggest ning too as it does have so many features. There is a
lot of RSS built in that allows for reading; but yes, must log in (AFAIK) to
participate. But the participation is so much more fantastic than an email
list. Simplicity vs depth, that is the question. It too does take a little
admin, tho nowhere near as much as a drupal site.
Admins can send emails to the membership with highlights of what is going on
this week; we could rotate that role on a monthly basis. And some day I
hope they include the message in the body of the notification! It is
irritating.
