Re: [Videolib] Feature Films and libraries

2014-07-16 Thread Susan Albrecht
Lorraine,

This is a service that I provide to our student groups and faculty members. I
also serve on the Faculty Film and Lecture Committee, since I am the campus
liaison for arranging licensing. While it can be a royal pain in the arse at
times – particularly having to drop other things for those “well, we want to do
this next week” requests – of course other times it’s a breeze and no trouble
at all.

The main reason I like having ONE person handle this for the campus is two-fold:

1) if there is education to be done regarding PPR and the legalities of
screenings, it helps keep the message consistent;

2) if everyone under the sun is arranging his/her own screenings through
Swank or etc., then chances are they’re NOT receiving the level of discount
they could if all bookings happen through one person/one account. Even a
little campus like ours managed to achieve a 15% discount last year by
funneling all screening requests through me.

One note. Like your situation, Lorraine, the library doesn’t typically fund
the actual PPR license; but I am happy to do the legwork and make the
arrangements. I just require the person/group to provide me with the account
number to charge in advance.

Subject: [Videolib] Feature Films and libraries

Hi everyone,

I’m writing up a PPR/Feature Film blurb for our website. When faculty / grads
/ students want to show a feature film, do you direct them to Swank or
Criterion, or does your library (librarian, media library) investigate? How
many of you consider this a library service? For the most part, this will not
come out of our budget, but folks ask how to get rights and I wanted to give
them a decent answer. Right now my advice to them is to contact Swank Digital
(on their own). I’m completely happy to help all of them, but it might be
best if they know how to begin on their own.

Thanks for your input,
Best,
Lorraine

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.

Sorry for the second post, but I forgot this…

While in theory I would agree that it’s good to have students learn to do
things for themselves, that also can lead to a lot of reinventing the wheel.
If they’ve never done this before, they likely won’t know about Swank,
Criterion and Sony Pictures Classics; they don’t have reps in place that they
can contact. It feels like a real disservice to me to force them to go
discover all of this when we have all of that info right at hand. Especially
for student group leaders, who tend to rotate out of positions each year.

[Videolib] TV version of Arsenic and Old Lace with Boris Karloff

2014-07-16 Thread Patricia Ruocco
?Hello,

I am hoping that someone out there will know who I need to contact to get the
Public Performance Rights to show the (1969?) TV version of Arsenic and Old
Lace to a small group of patrons at our library. It has Boris Karloff playing
Jonathan Brewster in it, and we're doing a short series of films starring
Karloff. It would be wonderful to share this one with them.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Nearly impossible to get rights for TV productions from that era ( not too
much easier for later ones) but has it even been legally released at all?

Um wait I looked it up not only is it not released KARLOFF IS NOT IN IT. My
guess is someone is confused because there is running joke in the play
about Brewster LOOKING like Karloff who was in the original Broadway
production. You might try THE OLD DARK HOUSE which you could license from
Cohen Media ( not an easy one to figure)

That could explain the running joke that he looked like Boris Karloff, who
played the Frankenstein monster in the 1931 movie. Fred Gwynne played Herman

Hi again,

I apologize - I had the year wrong. There was a TV version with Karloff playing
Jonathan Brewster on NBC in 1962. (I think they were playing the joke about
looking like Karloff the other way.) It is listed both on IMDb and Amazon. Here
are the links:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0595267/

I tried contacting NBC, but they replied that they didn't have the permission,
and didn't know who did. It was also shown as part of the Hallmark Hall of Fame
series, but that didn't seem like the right source either.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

most part they will sell anything unless/until a rights holder complains.
If it was Hallmark I will dig out a contact I have for them but the general
problem with most television especially from this period is that no one
involved ( actors, writer ,director ) agreed to public shows. The contracts
for broadcast were different from exhibition and it is a nightmare to go
back and get clearances from what are now in many cases estates. I suspect
the biggest problem in this case would be the underlying literary rights,
that tends to screw up a LOT of movies ( after the initial period of the
contract is over) let alone a TV production never contracted for exhibition.

 ?Hello,

I am hoping that someone out there will know who I need to contact to get
the Public Performance Rights to show the (1969?) TV version of Arsenic
and Old Lace to a small group of patrons at our library. It has Boris
Karloff playing Jonathan Brewster in it, and we're doing a short series of
films starring Karloff. It would be wonderful to share this one with them.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

 Patricia

Re: [Videolib] videolib Digest, Vol 80, Issue 25

2014-07-16 Thread Jessica Rosner
If that contact is no good I can get another. As it happens Hallmark owns
the Hal Roach library with lots of classic silent shorts so I know people
who deal with them.

Again Made for TV films are often a nightmare for any public shows though
sometimes companies are willing to help as there is no admission fee but
again the lawyers get paid to worry so that does not help.

Good Luck but FYI it probably does not look that good and I still think The
Old Dark House or some other films where Karloff's great comic timing is
shown off would be better options.

Thanks Jessica! I'm going to try your Hallmark contact and see what
happens. This whole thing has made me curious about old TV movies and
shows, and PPR. I'm learning it's yet another slippery slope...

OK this contact info for Hallmark is 5 years old BUT I could find a more
recent one if this does not work.

Well I am again suspicious of the DVD itself. I think it is bootleg
copy.Just because Amazon sells it does not make it a legal copy for the
most part they will sell anything unless/until a rights holder complains.
If it was Hallmark I will dig out a contact I have for them but the
 general
problem with most television especially from this period is that no one
involved ( actors, writer ,director ) agreed to public shows. The
 contracts
for broadcast were different from exhibition and it is a nightmare to go
back and get clearances from what are now in many cases estates. I
 suspect
the biggest problem in this case would be the underlying literary rights,
that tends to screw up a LOT of movies ( after the initial period of the
contract is over) let alone a TV production never contracted for
 exhibition.

  Hi again,

I apologize - I had the year wrong. There was a TV version with Karloff
playing Jonathan Brewster on NBC in 1962. (I think they were playing the
joke about looking like Karloff the other way.) It is listed both on
 IMDb
and Amazon. Here are the links:

  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0595267/

 http://www.amazon.com/Arsenic-And-Old-Lace-Television/dp/B00JUH9FGO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1405526715sr=8-1keywords=karloff+arsenic+and+old+lace

I tried contacting NBC, but they replied that they didn't have the
permission, and didn't know who did. It was also shown as part of the
Hallmark Hall of Fame series, but that didn't seem like the right source
  either.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.
