Subject: african film query

Hello Jennifer!

I have enjoyed looking through your catalogue of African films, so many
interesting ones.

I am trying to find the name (and a copy of) a film I saw in Vancouver in the
80's, early 80's I believe, that was beautifully filmed and amazing as it was a
feature without a word of dialogue, yet it told the story of villagers being
captured for the slave trade who are freed during their journey to the port by
the powers of a shaman who deliberately allows himself to be caught for a time.
It was a Mali-France co-production. I wonder if you have ever heard of it or if
you may have any tips on how I can find it.

Many thanks for your consideration of this request!

Dear Jennifer,

I suggest directing the faculty member to WorldCat. She should try searching
under the LC subject heading Motion pictures -- Mali and limiting the format
to visual materials. There may be enough of a plot synopsis in the records to
identify it, assuming that any libraries do indeed hold the film she is looking
for.

The subject heading Motion Pictures -- Mali will also pull up books about the
cinema from that country.

FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals indexes Variety film reviews back
to 1974--that might be another place to look. The faculty member might try
searching Mali as a keyword and limiting the publication to Variety.

She could also try EBSCOhost's Film and Television Literature Index, but I
*don't* recommend using their Variety film review module--it has literally
hundreds of incorrect dates and is also missing many reviews. I've cancelled
our library's subscription to that database until the problems are fixed. The
database's main citation index works fine, but unfortunately it doesn't index
Variety before the 1990s--as far as I know.

Best,
James

Hello,

It looks like the rights lie with Studio Canal for this one. Must one write a
letter to them in France asking for permission, or is there some other
distributor (p'raps in the US) who might be able to grant. Can't get through
Swank or CriterionPics.

Thanks!

I'm responding way late...don't know if this has already been found...but
we purchased this from Classical Video Rarities:

It appears to still be available.

Well, there are other performances of Rite out there, but I do believe the
Joffrey is no longer available on DVD or tape. It appears to be on
YouTube (of course)
