[Videolib] NMM News
Dear videolibbers, Some of you have probably already heard that I have accepted a new position, and will leave NMM by the end of the month. The really good news is that Jessica Hammond will be replacing me. Jessica has been with The Video Project since 2010, has attended several Markets and has served on the NMM Board of Directors. Jessica will bring new energy and fresh ideas and the Market will continue to flourish with her leadership. It has been a pleasure to work with you over the last 10 years. I thank you for your support and patience with the inevitable glitches and unforeseen challenges (who can forget the broken pipes at the Mesa Hilton.) and wish all of you the very best and huge budgets! Best regards, Ursula Schwarz uschw...@earthlink.net (520) 743-0280 VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. [Videolib] NMM Preview Portal
Effective March 23 the NMM Preview Portal will no longer be available. The Portal was established with the objective to consolidate NMM exhibitors' content into a single online catalog and provide preview clips searchable by subject, grade level, and distributing company, and to expand the ability of NMM attendees to evaluate content for their collections. This additional service was a large investment and commitment by the NMM and participating distributors, but the low usage of the Portal did not justify continuing with this project. Although we are disappointed, it was a worthwhile project and we thank everyone involved for their time and efforts. As a matter of curiosity, I was wondering just how much formal training did you receive in assuming your roles as media librarians? I ask the same question also for those who are not media librarians (like myself), but still do a fair amount of media work as part of their jobs. I assume many of you probably have degrees in film (or communications) studies, but did you ever take any media classes at library school. I know that many library schools offer courses in government documents, but does anyone know of any library schools offering video librarianship courses? Might there be any relatively recent books on the subject of video librarianship? Or did many of you learn video librarianship from what you picked (or are picking up now) on the job? I pose these questions because the Video Round Table is considering the idea (among other proposals) of possibly holding at next summer¹s ALA a program entitled Video Librarianship 101: ³a workshop for librarians just getting into video librarianship or for those librarians who are not exclusively media librarians¹ but have positions which entail having a fair amount of video responsibilities. Topics might include: ·PPR/institutional rates ·Tracking down PPR for a single campus or community showing ·Working with faculty, other librarians, students, and public library users in building up and publicizing video collections ·Streaming: opportunities and challenges. Hoopla? ·Allowing video collections to fully circulate and displaying them ³openly² (as opposed to keeping them behind the circulation desk).² Would any of you out there find such a program to be of any interest? If the film is available through an aggregate site it is pretty much the end of direct sales and it is perfectly understandable that aggregator can't pay very much for a single film so when a filmmaker is trying to recoup tens of thousands of dollars ( and trust me they only expect a fraction of this to come from academic sales) this is not a good option. Now it depends entirely on the film. I think these films are more than strong enough to sell on their own, I think one is an absolute blockbuster. I would not expect any library to buy them unless they would be used for classes. I also think I have accidentally mixed up the streaming issue with the film itself. The streaming rights are pretty much the cherry on top and it is about the content of the films and their use in studies. No one is being forced to buy streaming rights, they can buy the DVD without them but again one distinct advantage of dealing directly with the filmmakers is that you can by them with guaranteed lifetime streaming rights as these filmmakers own all rights themselves. I admit this is not likely the norm but these are honestly rather dedicated filmmakers who are committed to keeping control of their films and being directly involved in the distribution. FYI I am told that the NMM site will be open to any librarian in October for one month. Ursula are you lurking around? I am going to lean heavily in the direction of vendors who¹ve got material from a variety of sources, who understand the academic market and what we need, and who have a site searchable by subject and/or keyword. The filmmaker doesn¹t have to negotiate an exclusive agreement with a distributor, or do they? Seems to me they are going to get lost in the crowd by trying to go it alone. I usually make an effort to watch all of the movies that are nominated for an award and try to predict who will win. So it was great fun to see Inocente win the Oscar in the Best Documentary Short category. Inocente also won the Best of Show award at the 34th National Media Market (NMM) in Las Vegas. Inocente is a vital documentary about teen homelessness, immigration and the importance of arts education in this country. To watch a 3-minute clip go to http://www.nmm.net/best-of-show-winners/. [Videolib] National Media Market update
For those of you who couldn¹t attend the Market this year - The Best of Show award was given to First Run Features for Jane¹s Journey. About the film: It would be hard to name anyone who has had more of an impact in the realm of animal research and wildlife conservation than Jane Goodall, whose 45 year study of wild chimpanzees in Africa is legendary. In Jane's Journey, we travel with her across several continents, from her childhood home in England, to the Gombe National Park in Tanzania where she began her groundbreaking research and where she still returns every year to enjoy the company of the chimpanzees that made her famous. Featuring a wide range of interviews and spectacular footage from her own private collection (including her years in Gombe), Jane's Journey is an inspiring portrait of the private person behind the world-famous icon. You can see a 7-minute clip on the NMM website http://www.nmm.net/market_best_of_show.shtml. Ursula Schwarz National Media Market P.O. We have some of these in DVD format and we have been asked to find out if they can be streamed, in their entirety, to students enrolled in the online courses. Some were quite difficult to track down when we initially ordered them and came with no streaming rights. Some of the vendors we contacted advised that they did not provide licensing for streaming the film content; some do and we are going to try to obtain the streaming license/permissions for those titles. We’re trying to develop a workable strategy to contact producers for any titles that are now out of print and/or have now become more difficult to find. [Videolib] The 32nd National Media Market
Haven¹t registered for the 32nd National Media Market yet? Don't miss the chance to be a part of this annual event that brings together content providers and professionals involved in the use of media in teaching and learning. Although the primary focus of the NMM is screening and evaluating motion media, daily professional development sessions further enhance the Market experience by keeping you abreast of current hot topics in educational media and helping you gain a national perspective on current media issues. Highlights of this year's Market: Jane Hutchison, William Paterson University, is facilitating a pre-conference discussion group. This is a follow-up meeting to an ongoing discussion about policies and practices for the distribution and delivery of digital video. This year's opening session will be presented by Faith Rogow, Ph.D., founding president of NAMLE (National Association for Media Literacy) who will demonstrate how new approaches to media literacy education make it possible for every school to create a culture of inquiry, using practical and easy-to-implement examples based on sound educational pedagogy. Christopher Lohse from The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) will explain why the Common State Standards Initiative is important for the country. These common standards will bring about real and meaningful transformation of our education system to benefit all students. The first standards being addressed are English-language arts and mathematics in grades K-12. Do you want to learn how to use social media marketing to help your audience discover what¹s in your collection? Re: [Videolib] Streaming media vendors
Hi Susan, It¹s good to hear you are back! The NMM website is currently under construction, but you can still get the list of companies offering digital and streaming rights at http://www.nmm.net/market_resources.shtml Ursula Save the Date! I initially compiled this information several years ago. It has since been updated by Ursula Schwartz, Ex. Director, NMM. It¹s primary purpose was to serve as a ³jumping point² to bring about awareness of the various vendors, and their licensing options. The complex, and fluid world of digital streaming options makes it nearly impossible to create a definitive list. If you would like to take on the task of staying abreast of all the changes, and updating the list, then I don¹t think anyone would argue with you. Lol I would strongly encourage media Librarians to consult with suggested vendors for more up-to-date, and in-depth information about streaming initiatives. Just my $.02. Job changed, moved offices, etc. I've returned as part-time media with full-time reference librarian duties. You can take media out of the job, but you can't keep the librarian away from media (or something like that). I looked at the list on the VRT site and it needs some updating. Who should be doing that? Streaming vendors are modifying their terms all the time, in the sense of length, perpetuity, etc. Susan ghand...@library.berkeley.edu wrote: Check out: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/rts/vrt/vrtconferenceinfo/streamingvendor.cfm Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for streaming video vendors.
