[Videolib] NMM News

2014-04-10 Thread Ursula Schwarz
Dear videolibbers,

Some of you have probably already heard that I have accepted a new position,
and will leave NMM by the end of the month.

The really good news is that Jessica Hammond will be replacing me. Jessica
has been with The Video Project since 2010, has attended several Markets and
has served on the NMM Board of Directors. Jessica will bring new energy and
fresh ideas and the Market will continue to flourish with her leadership.

It has been a pleasure to work with you over the last 10 years. I thank you
for your support and patience with the inevitable glitches and unforeseen
challenges (who can forget the broken pipes at the Mesa HiltonŠ.) and wish
all of you the very best and huge budgets!

Best regards,

Ursula Schwarz

related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication

[Videolib] NMM Preview Portal

2014-03-13 Thread Ursula Schwarz
Effective March 23 the NMM Preview Portal will no longer be available.

The Portal was established with the objective to consolidate NMM exhibitors'
content into a single online catalog and provide preview clips searchable by
subject, grade level, and distributing company, and to expand the ability of
NMM attendees to evaluate content for their collections. This additional
service was a large investment and commitment by the NMM and participating
distributors, but the low usage of the Portal did not justify continuing
with this project.

Although we are disappointed, it was a worthwhile project and we thank
everyone involved for their time and efforts.

On behalf of the NMM Board of Directors,

The idea of Hot Topics Table is a highly intriguing one, but I am not sure
that ALA would be the most ideal place to hold such an event.
I am thinking that a more intimate venue (such as the National Media Market)
might be more suitable.

We did a similar program about a decade ago - with tables with specialist to
discuss topics like acquisitions - collections - reference - equipment -
cataloging. I can pull my old info from the program. You could spend time
with a topic, then there was a call to move to another group. We had about 2
VRT members with each group.

Well attended, and attendees could focus on their area of interest.

Colleagues! As a matter of curiosity, I was wondering just how much formal
training did you receive in assuming your roles as media librarians? I ask the
same question also for those who are not media librarians (like myself), but
still do a fair amount of media work as part of their jobs. I assume many of
you probably have degrees in film (or communications) studies, but did you
ever take any media classes at library school. I know that many library
schools offer courses in government documents, but does anyone know of any
library schools offering video librarianship courses? Might there be any
relatively recent books on the subject of video librarianship?

Or did many of you learn video librarianship from what you picked (or are
picking up now) on the job?

I pose these questions because the Video Round Table is considering the idea
(among other proposals) of possibly holding at next summer¹s ALA a program
 entitled Video Librarianship 101:
³a workshop for librarians just getting into video librarianship or for those
librarians who are not exclusively Œmedia librarians¹ but have positions which
entail having a fair amount of video responsibilities. Topics might include:
 ·PPR/institutional rates

·Tracking down PPR for a single campus or community showing

·Working with faculty, other librarians, students, and public library
users in building up and publicizing video collections

 ·Streaming: opportunities and challenges. Hoopla?

·Allowing video collections to fully circulate and displaying them
³openly² (as opposed to keeping them behind the circulation desk).²

Would any of you out there find such a program to be of any interest?

 Cheers!

As these are films that have as mentioned had significant theatrical play
they pretty much have done that part of marketing. If the film is available
through an aggregate site it is pretty much the end of direct sales and it
is perfectly understandable that aggregator can't pay very much for a single
film so when a filmmaker is trying to recoup tens of thousands of dollars (
and trust me they only expect a fraction of this to come from academic
sales) this is not a good option. Now it depends entirely on the film. I
think these films are more than strong enough to sell on their own, I think
one is an absolute blockbuster. I would not expect any library to buy them
unless they would be used for classes.

I also think I have accidentally mixed up the streaming issue with the film
itself. The streaming rights are pretty much the cherry on top and it is
about the content of the films and their use in studies. No one is being
forced to buy streaming rights, they can buy the DVD without them but again
one distinct advantage of dealing directly with the filmmakers is that you
can by them with guaranteed lifetime streaming rights as these filmmakers
own all rights themselves. I admit this is not likely the norm but these are
honestly rather dedicated filmmakers who are committed to keeping control of
their films and being directly involved in the distribution.

FYI I am told that the NMM site will be open to any librarian in October for
one month. Ursula are you lurking around?

To be blunt right back, as an academic purchaser I am going to favor
aggregated sites because they are more likely to be one stop shopping for me.
When faculty x tells me she wants a film on y subject there is a limit to the
amount of time I have to devote to that search. I am going to lean heavily in
the direction of vendors who¹ve got material from a variety of sources, who
understand the academic market and what we need, and who have a site
 searchable by subject and/or keyword.

The filmmaker doesn¹t have to negotiate an exclusive agreement with a
distributor, or do they? Seems to me they are going to get lost in the crowd
by trying to go it alone.

Maybe the NMM will open up their website to the world, we can only hope!

To be blunt because they would lose their shirts. These are folks who invested
a lot of money in making the films I don't want to hype them here but they are
new films that have had significant theatrical play and are on subjects of
major interest to the academic world ( and they won't be out in the retail
market) I have the greatest respect for ASP, New Day for t etc but they simply
would not generate the revenue these folks need to survive. It is
understandable that collections containing thousands of films can't afford to
pay very much for an individual title but I am confident that these are
important films that many institutions will want to buy. To be honest I am
more familiar with ASP model than New Day or Docuseek but the directors really
want to handle all their sales directly. They do not have to be streamed but
as many institutions now want streaming rights we want to make them available.
Libraries are more then welcome to buy them without streaming rights.

PS I will be taking to of them to The National Media Market so hope to see

receptions, professional development sessions and access to the preview

and find distributors for known titles.

WorldCat is definitely a resource. I think the issue with it, though, is
that lack of accompanying review. Given that the cost of documentary films
is often quite high especially when compared to books it¹s harder to
make the call to just purchase something based on its title and subject
areas. This is, again, why NMM is so vital for me - I get the chance to
view the content and assess the quality of the filmmaking before handing
over my dollars.

librarians and teaching faculty in institutions across the United States and
Canada. Being able to see a short video of a recommended title will help you
select the best programs for your collection.

You can find preview clips for the following titles now. More clips will be
added frequently, so check back often!

[Videolib] Academy Awards

Hi all

Well, it's really getting down to the wire, folks...Thursday is it for me.

Given its increasingly dire financial situation, the library no longer
provides individual retirement celebrations; they hold one rather paltry
party for everyone who retires in June...sort of like a mass burial. Hope
there's booze, at least.

Since I'm in no mood to make yet another going-away speech, I cobbled
together a little 8 minute clip reel that I'm gonna show in flagrant
disregard for copyright. I think it's only appropriate that I go out in
grand, transgressive style. And to compound the transgression, I've put
the video up for your streaming pleasure at:

[Videolib] National Media Market update

2011-10-24 Thread Ursula Schwarz
For those of you who couldn¹t attend the Market this year -

The Best of Show award was given to First Run Features for Jane¹s Journey.

About the film:
It would be hard to name anyone who has had more of an impact in the realm
of animal research and wildlife conservation than Jane Goodall, whose 45
year study of wild chimpanzees in Africa is legendary. In Jane's Journey,
we travel with her across several continents, from her childhood home in
England, to the Gombe National Park in Tanzania where she began her
groundbreaking research and where she still returns every year to enjoy the
company of the chimpanzees that made her famous. Featuring a wide range of
interviews and spectacular footage from her own private collection
(including her years in Gombe), Jane's Journey is an inspiring portrait of
the private person behind the world-famous icon.

I think I was 15 minutes ahead of you, but then I just read a Vanity

I think we could try to set something up, however the issue with
current older titles might be libraries who bought them at full
price getting upset, but i guess you can't do much about that. I do
think trying this with new releases would be a way to start.

Picture it: for one day (or week) only, The Strange Disappearance of
 Bees is
$200 or The Big Sellout is $100 (PPR negotiated separately if needed).
Let's say price predicated on collective volume sales of at least 50
units, offer ends at 500 takers. Only 5 titles can go up at any
given point, and only once a year. Open to all
filmmakers/distributors targeting the academic market (with a small
percentage of sales recouped for promotion and maintenance).

 Thoughts?

Hi All:

I'm trying to put together a viable list of vendors who supply streaming
video services, either per title (rights only or short-term streaming
rental service) or in true, online database format.

If possible, please provide:

1) A link to or list of your titles and services for academic libraries
(e.g.: ability to generate durable URLs for linking to individual clips or
entire films from within course management software such as Blackboard)

2) Annual subscription and one-time purchase models (including package,
collection, single title, and title interchangeability options)

3)  Access method and technical requirements (e.g.: UN/PW;
IP-authenticated site license with unlimited simultaneous users, including
remote/off campus access; special hardware/software, etc.)

4) Policies regarding PPR, educational use, and streaming services

5) Policies pertaining to digital rights licensing/clearance with
original film producers or rights holders (limited number of years in
license or true, in-perpetuity models)

For all those vendors who have already gotten in touch with me about this
from previous posts - many thanks!

I greatly appreciate all of the fantastic help and advice I've discovered on
this listserv - thanks to all!

Any thoughts?

It's about a young German woman who tries to investigate the history of the
Nazis in her town, keeps getting stymmied every step of the way by people
who do not want her to uncover the past. Maybe made in the 1980s. Cannot
remember if it was in Deutsch or English. It's not White Rose, which I

[Videolib] The 32nd National Media Market

2010-07-06 Thread Ursula Schwarz
Haven¹t registered for the 32nd National Media Market yet?

Don't miss the chance to be a part of this annual event that brings together
content providers and professionals involved in the use of media in teaching
and learning.

Although the primary focus of the NMM is screening and evaluating motion
media, daily professional development sessions further enhance the Market
experience by keeping you abreast of current hot topics in educational media
and helping you gain a national perspective on current media issues.

Highlights of this year's Market:

Jane Hutchison, William Paterson University, is facilitating a
pre-conference discussion group. This is a follow-up meeting to an ongoing
discussion about policies and practices for the distribution and delivery of
digital video.

This year's opening session will be presented by Faith Rogow, Ph.D.,
founding president of NAMLE (National Association for Media Literacy) who
will demonstrate how new approaches to media literacy education make it
possible for every school to create a culture of inquiry, using practical
and easy-to-implement examples based on sound educational pedagogy.

Christopher Lohse from The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)
will explain why the Common State Standards Initiative is important for the
country. These common standards will bring about real and meaningful
transformation of our education system to benefit all students. The first
standards being addressed are English-language arts and mathematics in
grades K-12.

Do you want to learn how to use social media marketing to help your audience
discover what¹s in your collection? Then attend Wednesday¹s session with
Allen Chou, President of Passion River Films and an accomplished social
media user.

But the Market isn¹t all about 21st learning skills! Let¹s get to what
really matters milk chocolate, dark chocolate and everything that goes
with them. Sign up for the ³Sweet Kansas City tour² on Sunday afternoon, led
by Brigid Duffy, former KC resident and long time Media Market attendee, who
will spice your trip with bits of local history.

Hiya Susan,

Welcome back. I initially compiled this information several years ago. It
has since been updated by Ursula Schwartz, Ex. Director, NMM.

It¹s primary purpose was to serve as a ³jumping point² to bring about
awareness of the various vendors, and their licensing options.

The complex, and fluid world of digital streaming options makes it nearly
impossible to create a definitive list.

If you would like to take on the task of staying abreast of all the changes,
and updating the list, then I don¹t think anyone would argue with you. Lol

I would strongly encourage media Librarians to consult with suggested
vendors for more up-to-date, and in-depth information about streaming
initiatives.

Just my $.02.

Best,
Mo at IU

Hi all:
I rejoined the list this week, after a few months off list. Job changed,
moved offices, etc. I've returned as part-time media with full-time
reference
librarian duties. You can take media out of the job, but you can't keep
the librarian away from media (or something like that).

I looked at the list on the VRT site and it needs some updating.
Who should be doing that? Streaming vendors are modifying their
terms all the time, in the sense of length, perpetuity, etc.
