What Mac are you needing the RAM for? Faster ones

RAM-ing speed! Re: Where to get RAM?

2001-07-27 Thread Gregg Eshelman

--- Amber Rhea [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I've often wondered what would happen if one tried
 SLOWER SIMMs that those
listed as the minimum requirement. Everymac.com has
 various Macs noted as
requiring 80ns, 70ns, 60ns, et al. My curiosity
 hasn't been so burning that
I've bought slower SIMMs for this purpose and tried
them in a Mac, but it
would be interesting to know why this SIMM speed
 requirement is important,
and why it varies so from Mac to Mac, even among
Macs made around the same time.

On the RAM bus, the memory controller sets the
timing of reads and writes. When the bus is set
for a read or write, it waits a certain amount
of time for the RAM to be ready to read or write.
If you use too slow of RAM it won't be ready to
be read or written before the time for the operation
to take place ends. Then you get a memory error and
bad stuff happens. To some extent older computers
can be sped up by using faster RAM than the slowest
specified. The reason is that a computer that
requires at least 80ns RAM will read or write
data the very instant the RAM is ready. Older systems
generally used a longer window of time for
RAM operations to take place. Popping 60ns RAM
into a system specced for 100ns will allow most
memory operations to take place right at the start
of the time window, thus giving a mild speedup.

10-15 years ago when I was using 8088/80286/80386
PCs it was quite easy to see the speed difference
when I upgraded a box to 60ns or 70ns RAM. The
RAM test part of bootup would fly by with a
BTTT! instead of me being able to hear
a distinct tick for each K. Of course, loading
up a 286 with 12megs of those individual 256Kx1
DIP chips was horrendously expensive and used up
three of the ISA expansion slots. What was funny
was I didn't have all the RAM the same speed and
the memory test sounded like it was shifting gears
as it went from the faster RAM to the slower chips.
(I configured the 60ns stuff as conventional and
XMS and the 70ns as hardware EMS so the 70ns wouldn't
slow down the faster RAM.)

If you take a IIci and install 70ns SIMMs in one
bank and 60ns in the other, it will all run at
70ns. The same goes for PCs, except for the olden
days of memory cards on the ISA bus.

As computers got faster, the slight speed difference
from using faster RAM became imperceptible to
the user, and only a benchmarking program could
tell the difference, which in normal operation
doesn't amount to a hill of beans. :) The memory
timing cycles are so tight now that even a couple
of nanoseconds too slow will cause trouble, which
is why it pays to buy name brand RAM like PNY,
Micron etc.

Re: Bin files. Re: System 7.5.5 [was: my stash of Macs]

2001-07-27 Thread Mike Evans

I never managed to install Open Transport on my LC (via the copy in System
7.5.3 Installer or via an OT Installer (1.1.1 and 1.1.2) on its own). Maybe
an earlier version than OT1.1 will work on LC's, but I had no luck with
version 1.1.1 or 1.1.2.
Actually, to clarify, it was worse than that, in that the LC had a processor
upgrade card (Sonnet Allegro 030 33MHz), which the OT Installers couldn't
'see'. The Installer just said you need an 030 processor or higher to run
this software or something like that.
Kind of presumed when I bought the card that it wld allow me into a
wonderful new world of speed and stability, using stuff like OT, but,
oh well, now I know different. I'm never quite sure if the card is working
at all, actually. 'Clockometer' shows it as running at 33MHz, so I guess it
must be... but it still seems that my IIci (030 25 MHz) might be faster
(although it does have an FPU... that must help).
I searched the Internet q a lot but never found any info on how to make the
OT Installer recognize the 030... Anyone had any experience with these
cards?

Re: My List

2001-07-27 Thread Marten van de Kraats

He, Jeff, nice stash, interesting that you don't have any ppc macs or
powerbooks as of yet.
I can understand that you try to get stuff as cheap as possible, so
do we all, but every once in a while a competitive deal on a
powerbook or ppc comes along. How come you didn't go after those?
BTW What is your favourite mac?

Greetings,

I suppose I should update my list:

Classic Battery

2001-07-27 Thread Steve Moody

This is one of the questions that leads to another.

I can't find the answer to these on the FAQ page.

   1) How do I get to the battery in a Macintosh Classic? I hope I
don't have to take the back off it. The FAQ has a link to batteries,
be the page doesn't explain how to change the battery.

   Which leads to:

   2) There is a small panel above the power switch. I removed it it
hope of finding the battery there, but instead find a bunch of knobs
and what looks somewhat like sound ports.

This really should be taken to the compact-macs list.

In any case, yeah, you need to open up the case. Don't worry, its
not that hard. Actually, I take that back. The Classic form factor
is the single hardest compact to open. The top sticks. You gotta
angle your toes in wierd erotic angles and yank the bejeezus out of
it. The computer, that is.

Once you have the case open its pretty easy. The Classic case is
pretty neat inside.

Standard disclaimers: do stuff at your own risk. I am not your
mother. I am not very good at what I do, and certainly should not be
advising anyone else. if you get your ass blown 12 miles high you
probably deserve it for listening to me so you can't sue me. ie
Perform at own risk.

The virus grabs a random file off the infected

then mails it out as an attachment and I think it
includes a copy of the virus so when you try to open
the attachment (in Outlook of course) you're infected.
(Now if the virus kiddies would get smarter and

Hello Marten!

I have the best modem you can buy for connect to internet by the phoneline,

understand our situation because you live in Holland. Don´t fuck me, excuse
me for the expresion,; the spanish phonelines are one of the worst in
Europe, and I don´t want to pay a lot of money by a conexion, that in my
country, works when a monopolistic company wants to work. Spanish acces to
internet is not a service it´s an adventure. Spain in 2001 doesn´t have the
same tecnology for the people that Holland or other democratic and advenced
country. I´m angry when someone out of Spain says that bullshit; we don´t
have t1, t3, cable or good adsl for everybody at reasonable prices.

This text Marten is not an attack to you, but you have to understand that

You need a special modem and a pay per month for adsl in every
country on earth. Your connection being slow has nothing to do with
the Spanish phonelines, it comes from using a slow provider or a slow

He, Jeff, nice stash, interesting that you don't have any ppc macs or
powerbooks as of yet.
I can understand that you try to get stuff as cheap as possible, so
do we all, but every once in a while a competitive deal on a
powerbook or ppc comes along. How come you didn't go after those?
BTW What is your favourite mac?

Greetings,

Marten

I had a PPC 6100/66 and I DO have an 8600/150, just didn't
bring it up for OT reasons.

Today the motherboards came from O'regon. Now I have 5 PPC
6100/66's that once were Centris and Quadra 610's.

And in that list is a Powerbook 140 that I gave to my son, and a 520
that's mine.

My favorite?

This is one of the questions that leads to another.

I can't find the answer to these on the FAQ page.

   1) How do I get to the battery in a Macintosh Classic? I hope I
don't have to take the back off it. The FAQ has a link to batteries,
be the page doesn't explain how to change the battery.

   Which leads to:

   2) There is a small panel above the power switch. I removed it it
hope of finding the battery there, but instead find a bunch of knobs
and what looks somewhat like sound ports.

Sorry, Steve. Ya gotta take it apart. The battery is on the mobo.
The panel you found is the screen sizing and etc. adjustments.

No, dual internal floppy and internal HD. It had a bright purple bracket in
it that looked as if it was home made, but I found another more
professionally made bracket and now it looks just like something Apple would
have shipped.

two IIcis, one stock with standard L2 cache, one w/50MHz Daystar '030 + FPU
IIsi, one almost in 100% condition + FPU, one totally stripped
Power Mac 7300 w/G3 500/1MB/225 (soon)
Apple Network Server 500/200

and a token Apple IIgs that netboots from the SE/30.

Actually, I'm a much bigger Commodore nut than Apple nut. A C128DCR sits
next to the 7300, and that's just for openers.

Wrong List (Mac Classic)

Hmm, I thought this list dealt with 68020 Macs as well as the 030's
so wouldn't the questions on the Mac Classic fit here. You have to
pull the power supply and the hard drive cable from the motherboard,
and, of course, you sure cannot miss the memory expansion board.
