Re: DTMF Re: Drain Crawler

2001-08-07 Thread Adam

Stripped down
versions often came with answering machines for
remote control, those were popular with hackers since
with a little work they could do the same things
as the more expensive DTMF dialers. :)

These tone diallers were/are also popular with what alot of people call
'hackers' as some types (most notoriously the Radio Shack ones) can be
re-crystalled and then used to defraud the coin tolling system used in
American payphones. Such a modified device is called a red box.

Unfortunately, the 'bot doesn't respond to DTMF tones, rather it responds to
single and compund tones in the 1000-2800Hz range. If I can find a tone
generation util, I'll try it, otherwise I'll just have to substitute my PC's
Creative AWE-32.

Also, IIRC, HyperCard 1.(something) could also be used to dial a phone
number directly trough the modem. In this case you could hook up your rotary
phone (Geez, I'm 18 and I remember these) and your Plus' modem in series and
enjoy Mac controlled DTMF. Neat.

Cheers,
Adam.

Don't worry about it, I'm 19 and *use* a rotary
 phone.

Heh, I'm 30 and remember when there was ONE style
of phone available, supplied by Ma Bell. They
had about 3 colors to choose from. They were rented,
not sold. Eventually, if you wanted, you could
buy your own phones, but they still had the same old
Ma Bell supplied innards. Finally the companies
that wanted to make their own complete phones got
the government to make the telcos allow equipment
not supplied by them to be connected to the phone
system. Of course that all happened in the 1970's
before you were born. ;) When that change happened,
magazines like Popular Science ran articles on all
the neat custom phones you could now buy.

OK, how about a hand cranked battery powered phone with which you
contacted Central to get a line out of the neighborhood? Yeah, in the

Now I sit here playing with a 4 machine home network (6100s, 6300s and a

Even the oldest version of HyperCard could produce valid DTMF tones.:-)

Re: DTMF Re: Drain Crawler

2001-08-06 Thread Bob C.

Yes, my SE using HyperCard actually dials quite reliably that way, just by
holding my phone's mouthpiece up to the speaker on the front of the Mac.
Doesn't work as well on my Plus, since the speaker is deeper, and on the
side. :-(

Those pocket phone dialers were really useful! When many pay phones
still had rotary dials, it was the only way to access Touch Tone features of
banks and information sources when you were on the road.

Incidentally, these tone dialers were listed in the Radio Shack 2000
catalog, but not the 2001 version, and yet they're still mentioned in the
on-line catalog; I don't know if they can be special-ordered.

So you could hold a rotary phone up to your Mac
and dial numbers with HyperCard? ;-)

A little unit that was popular in the 1980's was
a small box about 1/2 the thickenss of a pager with
a speaker on the back and a keypad on the front.
