You're sure welcome!  I'm still here lurking.  Life has taken me on many
twists and turns, but man you should see my field of VWs I have on my
acreage north of town.  I'm up to about 13 or 14.  LOL!  I married an
Aussie lady and we're living in our now one-year-old house.  Mr. VW is
doing VW restorations out in Colorado not too far from where RMMW was I
believe.  I miss the old days of the list.  It was all we had in those
pre-facebook days.  Now facebook has kind of taken over and other
elements of social media which has just about killed off the email
lists.  The streamlined effect of the email list is one that can never
compare.  I've often wondered if a VintagVW forum was created similar to
thesamba.com if it would bring back some of the old timers, but with
thesamba being a huge repository of information, it might be redundant.

I'm still thankful that John keeps the list going.  I'm kind of bummed
that the archives of the older stuff are gone.  What exists are snippets
of the various emails that people saved.  I find some of my articles
scattered about online from time to time.  I remember Scott Yuppa who
perished in a plane wreck with his father after being on the list for a
short time.

At any rate, when the VintagVW list was going at its strongest, it
filled a void that we had never had before and that was support from a
VW community that was so hard to find in our local worlds.  All of a
sudden we didn't feel so alone and had tons of help - the likes of which
we never had before.  The gurus finally had a forum to be appreciated
and admired in while they shared their wisdom.  I think the absolute
best part of the whole thing was that internet was still in it's infancy
in the private sector and so to figure out how to get online and more or
less configure a computer to get online gave you some street cred so to
speak, and if you were online, you were in-the-know and in good company.
Now anyone and everyone can get online and it isn't as special as it
once was.  I remember people thinking I was an outright genious with VWs
and all I ever really did was read and apply what others wrote and then
to explain it in simple terms that everyone could understand.  Now
everyone's an expert with the almighty shrine of google at their
service.

This year we are having our 17th annual campout at Indian Cave State
Park in Nebraska.  I never dreamed it would last this long.  Sadly none
of my VWs run at the moment, but I am feverishly building a small
teardrop camper for my wife and I to camp in so we don't have to run to
a motel as we've done the past  couple of years.

Please don't spill the beans Glen as I know you're on this list.  :)

Nice to hear from you again and sorry you sold the bug, but if it can
get in the hands of someone who appreciates, that's everything.

Re: [vintagvw] Final Thanks

2016-09-26 Thread Mike Morehouse
Erin,

You may be right...we'll see.

The biggest factor was the likelihood that we will be downsizing from our
current home and space and 2 car garage and large driveway to a smaller
home where I'd be unlikely to have a good covered place for the Bug. Also
when I started restoring it I thought one of my kids (or grandkids when
they started driving) might want it but I realized some years ago that that
was unlikely. Oldest grandson is a sophomore at East Carolina Univ. and his
parents live in Tampa so he needed something more long distance road worthy
than the Bug and really none of my kids or grandkids or their spouses are
really into older cars or have the interest and mechanical aptitude to
maintain an older car.

Wife hasn't driven it in probably 15 years so I was really the only one
that got any use out of it. She was always afraid that someone would run a
stop sign and hit it and hurt me and total the car and the insurance would
not cover the value.

I just came to the realization that it might be time to let it go to
another good home which it now has.

It wasn't easy at all as I could see my father-in-law in it as we would go
to golf course in FL.

It was just the memories it represented.

Garage looks rather empty now with only my wife's Sonata parked in there.

I expect there will be some days when it hurts to see it not there but life
moves on and I will always have the memories won't I.

Money I got for it will help pay for some new hearing aids I need badly
but that wasn't the prime mover in the decision even though my wife and
daughter think otherwise.

I'm just very thankful the Lord blessed me with it , the experience and the
memories for this season of my life. God is good!

I wish you Godspeed on getting one of yours back on the road again.

If there is another VW in my future down the road...only He knows and His
will and plan are perfect.

We will see

Blessings and peace to you and yours,

Mike Morehouse

I told my wife the enjoyment I had during the process of restoring it was

Re: [vintagvw] Final Thanks

2016-09-26 Thread No Quarter

Mike.Your words were very kind. But you have provided me with thoughtful
and useful advice and tips many times. Since I'm working on a '72 myself I'll
especially miss your insights into my car's 44-year-old iddy-ossyncrazies.Maybe
you'll soon get bug-bitten again!Bert KnuppCopbug PolizeikäferNashville,

Good afternoon to all from Opelika Alabama.
Today I sold or 1972 VW Bug that had been in our family since my father-in-law
bought it from Jim Larcom VW in Dallas Texas in July 1972.
We brought it up here from FL when he died in August 1998 and set about to
restore it.
Never having owned a VW before I was clueless about how to do so many things. I
fortunately came upon this group and each of you and those group members from
years back were so instrumental and helpful responding to all my questions.
Members sent me free parts detailed message on how to do certain things.
There is no way I would have ever gotten the car restored and been able to
enjoy driving it as I have without each of you.
I did keep my 3 ring binder of emails telling me how to do so many things.
I can't thank everyone but here are some names I found that I can at least say
thanks to if indeed they are still on the list..

This by no means an exhaustive list as there are too many of you to count but I
did want to say thank you. I'm sure I asked a lot of dumb questions at times
but each of you was always kind and gracious and helpful and understanding. I
guess you had been in my shoes as a VW noobie at one time.
I plan to stay on the list as I'll enjoy seeing what you all are up to.
Right now it hurts to be VW-less but it was time.
Once again. My heartfelt thanks to this great VW community. May God bless you
with safe travels in your VW's.
Keep on Dubbin!!!
With much gratitude and affection

2016-09-24 Thread Mike Morehouse
Ray, that is so very kind of you to say. I hope that is the case every day.
Don't know if another VW is down the road but if it is I'll always know you
folks are there for me as I will be for you.

His peace and blessings upon everyone on this list,

Mike
