Re: recipe storage program
Hi, thanks so much this is an awesome program. I have been dictating recipes using seri and although it isn't perfect and i do have to make corrections occasionally it works amazingly well. Love this program!!! - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, November 19, 2012 1:26 AM Subject: RE: recipe storage program Hi Penny and Roger, Yes, unfortunately I have the same problem, I used to just type all my recipes up in Notepad and save them in various subfolders like Cakes, Cookies, Desserts, Meals, Appitizers etc. which in turn are in a Recipe folder. If you want such recipes in Paprika you do have to type them into the app, once you tab on Add Recipe at the top right there are 3 tabs across the bottom: Recipe: Here you give your recipe a name, you can specify prep time, cook time, categorize it etc. Ingrediants: Specify the ingrediants Directions: Type out the directions as to how to prepare the recipe. I have not yet typed in a lot of my recipes that I have, but the fact is that if you are looking for anything just tab on the browser tab on the main screen, then do a google search and pick a site that is supported (you can find a list of the supported sites on their website and it's a long list). Many popular sites like Food Network, Cooking.com, SimpleRecipes.com and so on are supported. Now once you double tab on the recipe you want there is a Save Recipe button at the bottom, easiest to find if you swipe left from the tabs across the bottom, double tap it and wait a moment and the app pulls all the information into the proper fields. Only thing it doesn't do is assign a category, those you set up yourself and assign, then tap save again and it's done. This process is super easy and the app is wonderfully accessible. I think it's well worth it to start to use it for new recipes going forward and then to just over time type in those you already have. If you do it with a bluetooth keyboard it's not so bad and I guess if you are a Mac user you could use the Mac app they have and then copy and paste. You could also put the text files you have in Dropbox, open them from there on the iPhone and copy and paste especially if you already separated the ingrediants and directions into different files so you could just open the file in an app like Filer or any text editor like Elements, do a select all and then copy and paste it into the appropriate tab in Paprika. The main tab with name, prep time, cook time etc. you could then fill in by typing the information. If you did a few recipes at a time once a week you'd be able to get it done in a few months. Fact is that even those recipes you have you probably could find online and import them that way. One thing I should add is that in Settings there is an Import option, but the file formats specified there don't mention text. It may be worth your while to contact their support and ask if they have any recommendations on how to best do this, maybe they know of a trick that would make it possible. Re: recipe storage program
I have found it easy for the past several years to put each recipe on a text file and save them in a recipe folder located in my Dropbox folder. I use sub folders inside the Recipe folder, too. But the great thing is that with Dropbox on my iPhone I can easily pull up the recipes and view them on the phone. The main thing I have noticed about using Dropbox on the phone is that they don’t put the folders at the top of the list but alphabetized with the files. So I am in the process of cleaning up and renaming files in the Dropbox folder. I have started putting a digit in front of the folder names that I use most often to move them to the top of the list. Using the recipes this way is great since I usually copy and paste them into the text documents on the computer and then I can view them on the phone. I would not want to bother with a separate app that would only be available on the phone and not my laptop. Just a thought, Sherrie Gosling From: Roger Frischenmeyer Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2012 3:21 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: recipe storage program hi is it pretty easy to add personal recipes? Thanks RF - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2012 12:52 PM Subject: RE: recipe storage program Hi Roger, I highly recommend an app called Paprika. The developers have done a bunch of work to make the app more accessible with Voiceover and if a main stream developer does that it’s always a good thing. If you create an account your recipes will also be backed up and synced between multiple iDevices if you have more than one. If you ever get a new phone all you have to do is enter your user name and password and you have all your recipes back. I found this very useful when I did a factory restore on my iPhone after upgrading to iO/S 6 and forgot that I had recipes in there. At first I thought I lost them because I couldn’t remember if I had setup an account or not, then I did the password recovery thing, was able to log in and here were my recipes. You can also import recipes from a number of cooking and recipe websites. They also have an app for Mac computers, nothing for the PC, however. Here is what they write in their support/FAQ section: Question: Do you have a Windows version? Answer: We do not currently have a Windows version of Paprika, nor is one planned at this time. However, if there is enough interest, we may produce a web-based version in the future. I have written to them and mentioned that I’d love to see a web version although to be honest, having the iOS app really is all you need in my opinion. I can have my iPhone or an iPod Touch in the kitchen and if you put it in a ziplock bag you can even touch and use it with fingers that are greasy, wet or full of sticky dough etc. I suggest you check out Paprika on the app store and also take a look at their website: http://www.PaprikaApp.com Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Is it easy to set an alarm using the native clock app on the iPhone 4s using voice over?
First of all, if you use Siri to set an alarm the “regular clock” is set; Siri is only a voice recognition interface. This is true of notes, calendar events, e-mail, messages, etc. But beyond that, Siri is so easy to use. Holland's Boy, Bill - I spilled spot remover on my dog. Thanks for the reply, Daniel. A little googling seems to confirm your answer, but I did learn that it's possible to drag the VIP folder to the bottom of the list so at least you don't have to look at it right up there at the top. In your list of email accounts tap the edit button at the upper right of the screen. Along the right side there will appear reordering buttons just like for reordering songs in playlists. RE: siri and reminders , based on locations
Two things might be going on here. Have you identified anyone in your contacts as my boss? Second, try saying, Remind me when I arrive at Office GTB, to call my boss. Richard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of William Windels Sent: Monday, November 19, 2012 5:07 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: siri and reminders , based on locations Hello , I am testing if I can set reminders that alerts me when I reach a location that is in one of my contacts For this, I am using a iphone5 with IOS 6.01. I have a contact called office gtb with a address in it. The appointment That I create is spoken like this: remind me that I have to ask my boss about the last call when I arrive at office gtb When Siri is understanding well, it says that I have no work-address in my personal contact. So, is it not (yet) possible to make a reminder based on the address of my contacts)? I don't understand what the possibilities are about making reminders based locations.. kind regards, William -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Want to hear Voice Over while on call
Which iPhone do you have? On my 4S I have this problem since the upgrade to iOS 6. Apple is aware of this, but they do say that apparently it effects only a small number of users and I highly recommend you write to accessibil...@apple.com and let them know about it. At this point the best and only work-around is to use a headset for calls where you have to enter numbers once you are connected, you can hear Voiceover just fine that way. Hope you didn't mind Rob. I forwarded the message on. Thanks you ever so much for the help. Most of it I need to do, but at least he will know what he needs to send. A gift card will have a redeem number, tell him to send you the full redeem number to you by email. Next, in the applestore or itunes store orwhatever it is now; under Featured, wait for it to display all the featured things; then go right to the very end; you could start from the very bottom and start flicking left and it is only about 3 items back, the redeem button; click that and follow the prompts, not least type your redeem number into the edit field, and click the button which is going to say send/redeem/go/ok or something; and it will do it if it's right. The numbers are long, so if you could select it and copy it in the clipboard so you can paste it, so much the better. The other useful thing at the end of Featured where it gives your apple id, is your credit balance; so you can follow what you're spending. Apple bluetooth keyboard
Hi friends: I bought my apple bluetooth keyboard about one year ago and haven't used it for aproximately six month; don't know if I forgot it on the last time I used it. Today, when I tried to use the keyboard, it is not turning on, so I think, not sure, that the batery has died. I didn't receive a charger when I bought the keyboard and don't know how to charge it. Can someone help??? Cheers. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Apple bluetooth keyboard
The keyboard does not recharge. It uses two AA batteries. At the top of the keyboard, you can feel how it is rounded. This houses the batteries. At the left end is a screw with a very large slot you can use a coin etc. to open. Hi folks, I have been checking through the latest emails and quite a few people want to download all kinds of things to their iPhones. How about checking out Phone Drive which lets you transfer things including music if you like to your device. I have made a podcast on this, again for another magazine but it may help someone. It also gives you the facility to download and unzip from the Internet. Search for Phone Drive on the App Store and it will show up. Here's the link to my podcast if you are interested. https://www.dropbox.com/s/dlv717qrvxchmub/Phone%20Drive%20Edited.mp3 Enjoy! ZoomReader Now on iPhone 4, 4S, 5, iPad Mini, iPad 3 and 4 and iPod Touch with 5MP Camera
For those of you not quite sure what ZoomReader is, it's our OCR app for iOS devices. You simply snap a picture of anything with text on it and in mere seconds, ZoomReader turns that paper into electronic text and reads it aloud. Think of the possibilities - grocery store signs, menus, handouts with impossibly small print, newspaper articles, magazines...the possibilities are endless! And this is all on a device that you probably already have on you so there's nothing new to remember to pack in your pocket or throw in your purse. Of course we still support the iPhone (4, 4S and 5) as well. If you've already purchased ZoomReader for your phone, and want it on your other devices, simply sync them with iTunes and ZoomReader will now appear as an app. Don't have ZoomReader yet and are wondering how to get it? It's available in the iTunes App Store for $19.99. Click here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zoomreader/id414117816?mt=8 You can read more about it on our mobile site http://mobile.aisquared.com/ , or watch this video of the new and improved ZoomReader in action: http://youtu.be/3wH1yJcNO3I -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Low Vision Study - Nov 27th
Sorry folks, just in case some of you don't open the link contained within the message, this is a company currently in the process of developing a magnifier app for the iPhone, and possibly iDevices. Hence why I sent it to the this list in particular. Basically so Canadian Residents, in particular, those living in the Toronto area, might have a chance at this. I also thought that those living outside of the immediate area, might want to contact this company and ask they become beta testers of their apps. If this kind of message is unwelcome here, please let me know. RE: 2 apps seem to be hun on Installing in Updates
Well, they didn't appear with a Spotlight Search, but you're right that they were there on one of the Home Screens. They both indicated after clicking on the app icons that a download wasn't possible and to try again. The 2 apps are still on the Updates page, and the button indicates Update instead of Installing. I'll give it a few days and try them again. Thanks. Reading iBooks with a Braille Display on iPhone 5
Hello, all. I am attempting to read an epub document on my iPhone 5 with iBooks, and am having a problem I never experienced on the iPhone 4. I can't advance to the next page! When I get past the text, I try the dots 1-3-5 chord, the dots 1-4-5-6 chord, the dots 2-4-6 chord, and the dots 3-4-5-6 chord, all to no avail. I have even changed the theme type in Appearance from book to scroll. I am using a BrailleConnect 32 with the iPhone. Has anyone experienced similar issues? Any suggestions? Thanks. When you read the description of the app, it suggests that would be functional for totally blind users given that it is possible to get speech output of what is scanned. We need to be clear in the advertising for this product that additional work needs to be done to make it fully accessible for those of us who cannot see. Thank you. RE: ZoomReader Now on iPhone 4, 4S, 5, iPad Mini, iPad 3 and 4 and iPod Touch with 5MP Camera
Yes, from the sounds of the first email, I inferred it was fully accessible to a blind person. I note, too, there are in-app voice upgrades of $2.99 each. s -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Robert Fenton Sent: Monday, November 19, 2012 4:38 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: ZoomReader Now on iPhone 4, 4S, 5, iPad Mini, iPad 3 and 4 and iPod Touch with 5MP Camera Hello: I have a similar concern to Fred. When you read the description of the app, it suggests that would be functional for totally blind users given that it is possible to get speech output of what is scanned. We need to be clear in the advertising for this product that additional work needs to be done to make it fully accessible for those of us who cannot see. Thank you. Re: Reading iBooks with a Braille Display on iPhone 5
Make sure you are within the text of your book, then use dot 1-3-5-chord to go to the next page. Try reversing panning one item once your past the text, and this will take you back to the top of the page. The new IBooks has the page adjustment control in a slightly different spot. It's no longer the next control you come to after the text. If you do get to it, though, use dots 3- and dot-6-chord to go to previous and next item. Re: ZoomReader Now on iPhone 4, 4S, 5, iPad Mini, iPad 3 and 4 and iPod Touch with 5MP Camera
I just did a test on the iPod Touch 5th Generation. I scanned the same page from the same height with Zoom Reader and with Prizmo. Zoom Reader gave me about 30 percent accuracy, Prizmo was about 95 percent accurate. For half the price, Prizmo is way better. Frankly, from the comment of a couple sighted people whose opinions I have a great deal of respect for, Zoom Reader is evenlacking as a magnificationtool. They can get as good or better results fromthe free Magnifying Glass with Light. RE: HIMS Releases HIMS Chat, an app for face-to-face communication for those who are deaf-blind
Hi, Even though there are a few things for them to work out, I did a trial run with a sighted co-worker today and it seems to work fairly well. I am not deaf-blind, but we have clients that are, so I wanted to take it for a spin. A few things to note: 1. There is a message about double tapping the OK button to get started once you select New Conversation. The person using the braille device should do that. When the sighted person is instructed to tap once before typing, there is no visible keyboard until the blind user hits space bar plus dots 1,4,6. Then it is pretty straight forward from there. Also, it seems to work with any braille device. My test was done with a non-HIMS display. I hope to have time to test it with the Braille Edge and the BrailleSense in the next couple of days. siri volume
Is there a way to change the volume on the siri voice? My husband just got an iPhone 5 and the volume on siri is very soft. I, on the other hand, have an iPhone 4S and my siri is a little louder than I'd like. I can't find a setting anywhere to change her spoken volume. Any help would be appreciated, particularly since my husband has a hearing loss and siri, as she is now, is quite difficult for him to hear. Thanks in advance. God bless! Question about iPhone 4S
Hi, I got another iPhone 4S a few weeks ago, because the volume button broke. I went to cync it to my computer to put my music on it, and it asked me did I wanna set the new phone up as a new one, or back it up from the previous one, and I chose to restore it from the previous phone. My questions are: is this ok or should I have cynced it as a new phone, or is it personal preference? Secondly, I noticed that all of my texts were now back on my replacement-new 4S from when the last time I cynced the old phone, and the texts that I had already had on the new 4S were gone. How are kthe old texts saved, and how come the texts that were on the phone before I cynced it disappeared? Thanks. Re: Question about iPhone 4S
It is up to you and it is usually perfectly fine to restore from the old unless you wre having some kind of issue that might have gotten saved in the backup. It is often an advantage to restore it from the backup. It's like putting the exact image of what was on the old one on the new hardware. The reason you lost your existing texts when you restored is likely because the process overwrote any existing data, it did not combine the data on the phone with the backup. You did not do anything wrong, it's just how the process works in that case. Re: siri volume
Press the volume up or volume down button whilst Siri is speaking. The volume buttons change the volume of whatever sound task is currently occurring. Hello, Where can I find Prismo? It's not available in the app store. Forgive my ignorance.
