Re: Blindsquare: my favourite iOS navigation app thus far

2013-01-20 Thread Grant Hardy
Just a correction, I did not mean to state that one can search by
exact street address--this seems to not be available. However, address
ranges are announced when walking and you can of course search by the
business name. It also knows about plenty of other residential
locations, too. The other information I provided should be correct.

Cheers.

On 1/19/13, Grant Hardy grantha...@gmail.com wrote:
I know this app has been discussed on list before, but just wanted to
mention that in my experience, BlindSquare, which uses open street map
data and FourSquare points of interest, offers me the best experience
analogous to holding a Trekker Breeze or a Sendero GPS system while
walking. The information can be a little verbose, but you can change
what gets announced. Cross streets are consistently announced as well
as your heading, which do not work reliably for me in other apps.
Ariadne misses lots of cross streets, and Apple Maps with VoiceOver
repeats many data numerous times while omitting lots of cross streets.
Blindsquare can also track your distance and direction from any of the
POIs it knows about, a custom address, or even a custom POI. So you
have both commercial POIs and custom POIs in the same app, which is a
 nice bonus.

No turn by turn directions are available, but it's easy to select an
address or a POI and tell BlindSquare to open another navigation app
such as Apple Maps or Navigon, with the destination already set up so
you can easily plan a route. And since BlindSquare uses its own speech
rather than VoiceOver, it'll continue talking even while your device
is locked or while you're in another navigation app.

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but just wanted to offer this brief
review because I've been very very impressed with an app that I never
thought I'd use--I don't use FourSquare! With BlindSquare, I feel
confident that most of the data you'd expect to hear from a blindness
specific GPS device will be there for me.

Re: Blindsquare: my favourite iOS navigation app thus far

2013-01-20 Thread Don Breda
I couldn't help but chime in here to further praise BlindSquare.

I have used every gps out there even trekker for packmate which never
saw the light of day.

BlindSquare is unbelievable! What it really is is not so much a gps
program like navigon but really the best! pair of eyes bar none a blind
person can have.

After all that is what we really miss most of the time what stores are
we passing, what street are we approaching etc.

I live in New York city, in the heart of midtown manhattan and let me
tell you I have found out about more things in my neighborhood that I
never knew were there with Blindsquare then all the gps apps, restaurant
apps restaurant menu apps etc. put together.

Its truly amazing!

I only wish I had made the time to nominate it for the appleviz awards
for 2012 because unfortunately this app I feel has been very much
overlooked. I tended to overlook it as well when it first came out and
I truly regret that.

While I am no fan of 4square, the concept of using things like 4square
to provide info is a great! one.

Companies like Sendero, navigon mosionX pay big fees to companies like
navtech for POI data and so many times that data is quite inaccurate
very outdated and to say the least incomplete.

The approach BlindSquare takes to POI info makes so much sense because
the information is always being updated by people like you and I
visiting these places.

Just my opinion but if you have been on the fence take a look at this
app, give it the attention it deserves and I can't imagine you will
regret it.

2013-01-20 Thread Mark BurningHawk
Hi, David.

I told both Gmail on the server (I think) and Mail on the Mac to delete copies
of messages from the server after download, but no one ever listens. :) So,
yes, I'll have to slay this particular hydra as well. I seem to be
consistently having a problem with the Slide one finger up or down, gesture.
I think it's being confused with my swipe. There's an adjustable page scroll
spot on my home screen that I cannot seem to slide up or down to change
value, but can split-tape it. Same thing with my double tap and hold,
gesture; when switching the keyboard between letters and numbers or symbols,
When I double-tap the more, spot, it'll say, more, numbers, then I have to
double tap and hold again to get the numbers to actually appear. It's almost
three gestures in one just to switch the keyboard map. When I slide up or down
to change a value, Vo seems to interpret this as a swipe or two-finger flick-up
and starts reading the whole screen. Every time I check the rotor, it's set to
containers. So, maybe I need to refine my gestures a bit more. But, I've
taken this thing out of the boxes and am now up to using Skype, so I'll get the
rest; I look forward to playing with it.

A brf file is actually a plain ASCII text file with normal characters that
represent Braille. There is no special computer formatting for a brf file.
Therefore, this same text is rendered accurately when it's placed into an
epub file.

You can use Stanza to convert files to epub. You can also use TextEdit to
export the files to pdf format.

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as originally
produced by NLS, is rendered perfectly. It looks perfect on a Braille
display, but since the characters represent Braille, it will be spoken as
gibberish if you use speech.

I hope this helps. :)

the heck do you convert a brf file into an epub? And once you did that,
then wouldn't it be translated out of braille grade II into regular print
in the epub form? So you'd need a braille translator together with a
program that converted the text from the braille translator into epub? And
then you would have to read that file with grade II translation turned on.
Clearly, I'm missing some big step here.

Re: help with a word game

There is an accessible app called Werder. It doesn't give you a word to start
with, but it gives you nine letters. It is not a time to game, But you have to
see how many words you can make using those nine letters. You cannot use a
letter more than once in a word, unless it is listed more than once as part of
the nine letters.

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but it sounds close.

Books lit, epub, moby

When I try to open them, they say that I can't. I have iBooks the nook app

Or is the only way to put them on the phone through iTunes?

Re: syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.

2013-01-20 Thread Mark BurningHawk
For the moment, I'musing standard typing. I'll switch to touch typing
eventually, but for now I like to split-tap when I am sure I've got the letter
I want. I'm not slow, I have a hearing loss, and I have like eight passwords
that NEED to be entered correctly or else all sorts of cluster arrangements
will occur. So, if I split tap on the More, numbers, button, I hear a faint
click, but the keyboard is still the same. If I touch more, numbers, then
lift up, double tap and hold, I hear a different noise which is a three-tone
noise, which means to me the keyboard has changed, and sure enough, it has.
I'm not sure what Im doing here that's nonstandard.

And, no, I'm sorry, but there are no other fingers accidentally touching the
screen; this was the first habit I cured myself of a long time ago. No, I
think perhaps there's some misinterpretation involved when the IOS says Slide
up or down to change the value, but Voiceover says double tap to change the
value. I'm wondering if this is a similar occurrence to when I power down the
Ipad and VO says slide to power off, but what is needed is a double-tap
there. In the case of the sliding up or down, it's important if I want to
slide my way through a message list, for example, and split-tap to select for
deletion when I've pressed the edit button.

Once I figure an efficient, fast way to sort through Mail, I'll be able to
start using my pad for just about everything I use my laptop for. Already.

At the bottom of that screen where it complains about not being able to open
the file there should be an export button.
Tap export and up will come a list of any apps which are set to handle that
file type, such as ibooks for epub files.

Hope this helps,

Re: Blindsquare: my favourite iOS navigation app thus far

2013-01-20 Thread Les Kriegler
Grant, I believe you can, however search for an address through the Myplace is
option. I've done this to find the office and I work out of and I did this by
specifying a street address.

Just a correction, I did not mean to state that one can search by

 Cheers.

2013-01-20 Thread cait furness
Now this is a testament with as packed in as it can be in places like New York!
Stores on top of stores and such! I'll have to give blind square a try next
time I'm in Toronto and see how it does, but I like it for our city as well,
have learned a thing or two about stuff I didn't even know was around, which is
very nice. I've had sighted people tell me they didn't know where a place was
when I know darn well it was in a certain plaza just not exactly where and they
can read the darn signs! But blind square got us there right up to the door..
well, that and the dogs!

Just my opinion but if you have been on the fence take a look at this
app, give it the attention it deserves and I can't imagine you will
 regret it.

Ipad 3 and the hearing aids, button in settings

2013-01-20 Thread Mark BurningHawk
Hi, listers:

This morning, while playing with Settings, in Accessibility, I clicked a

RE: Ipad 3 and the hearing aids, button in settings

2013-01-20 Thread Tony
Don't know about the hearing aid setting but you can pair the ICom with your
phone via bluetooth. You can answer and hang-up phone calls with the big
button on the front of the ICom.

According to some Phonak customers you can use a Panasonic KX-TG-774x phone
with the Icom or Com Pilot. This allows you to use a landline phone hands
free and have the much better audio. My audiologist, who is very
knowledgeable and help get some of my suggestions incorporated in the new
Com Pilot, wasn't aware of this. It took several days of web crawling and a
number of phone calls to even get the various reps to understand what I want
to do. I live in the booneys so a friend tried several stores in Phoenix
and Dallas but none would allow him to try to connect to his Com Pilot.

Re: Blindsquare: my favourite iOS navigation app thus far

locations, too. The other information I provided should be correct.

 Cheers.

 Hi, Mary,

IOS has a built[in translator to convert text into Grade Two Braille. As an

 Grade One.

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as originally produced
by NLS, is rendered perfectly. It looks perfect on a Braille display, but
since the characters represent Braille, it will be spoken as gibberish if
 you use speech.

 I hope this helps. :)

I'm confused. What I think you said is that it is possible to read brf files

do you convert a brf file into an epub? And once you did that, then
wouldn't it be translated out of braille grade II into regular print in the
epub form? So you'd need a braille translator together with a program that
converted the text from the braille translator into epub? And then you would
have to read that file with grade II translation turned on. Clearly, I'm
 missing some big step here.

Re: Are you satisfied with your IPad Mini?

2013-01-20 Thread Nimit Kaur
Hello Eric,

I have the IPOD 5g the latest and it is very similar to IPhone except
that you don't always have internet. I am totally blind and I like it
because as a student, I go to school and I was put on a bus with so
many kids that have some kind of disability with me being only blind.
But anyways, I like it because I like to play cool games in it and it
passes my time on the bus and anywhere I am bored. Some of the games
I found from this list and other lists I am subscribed to are very
very addicting. I have music downloaded from my PC and I put it on my
IPOD from Itunes and I can listen to it. The battery is awesome! At
least ffor my schedule. Half of the day, I am in school and stuff so
I don't use it as much but tha's just my opinion. Thanks!

me. I'm on paratransit to and from work and school a lot, sometimes hours in
a day. Once I got the iPad mini, it was really nice to be able to play games
on the bus, and only have the battery percentage drop just a few percentages
in three hours time. I would've never been able to do that with the touch or
4s. I like having the iPhone 4s, so I can check emails while traveling. And
the iPad mini is really easy to type on, especially with the help of

 Hope this helps,

 So,
 how and where?

For those with WIFI or WIFI plus cellular, do you wish you had gotten
cellular or do you find you don't really need cellular?

I have the IPhone 4S and an ITouch. I am wondering if I really want to
purchase a Mini. It seems the only advantage would be having one with

 larger ITouch.

 Thanks for sharing your experience.

2013-01-20 Thread Nimit Kaur
What if you're not using a blue tooth keyboard? I am not using that
and I just slide my fingers to read the document and in agreement to
Joe, it is annoying to go up and down and it would be nice if there
was a go to top of the document and go to the bottom of the document
and jump to paragraphs and stuff with voiceover. Thanks!

 Hello,

So I've now had the iPad for about a month. The purchase of a Zagg
keyboard case has made a huge difference, but the reading/editing
experience leaves a lot to be desired. I'm hoping someone can help me
maybe fix the way I'm doing things to make the experience better.

Moving line by line on several apps to read documents while editing is
frustrating. Sometimes Voiceover will read only part of a line. Sometimes
it repeats a line, and if it only catches a fraction of a line, it will
 tell me words are misspelled.

I have not found a way to jump paragraph by paragraph.

Is there a way to select text from the cursor to the beginning or end of a
 document?

These things seem small. Yet, the combination makes it difficult to
produce anything of value on the iPad.

Can someone give me tips on what they're using to make editing and general
navigation a little smoother? I really think it's a me thing, and so any
advice and suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks in
 advance.--Joe

Hi Lisa,
I don't think there is all that much difference between the 5 and the 4s,
with respect to the physical layout, except the 5 has the larger screen.
So the book you have from NBP should give you the accurate info. Is there
something specific you are looking for that isn't in the book?\

I read about the belkin on Amazon, and it received really mixed reviews. In
fact, most of the options I read on Amazon got mixed reviews. Kind of makes
this more challenging.

Lol, maybe I'll shelf this idea for later, and purchase the simple light

If you are talking about the VIP folder, no messages are actually placed
there. You added names to VIP. VIP is what Apple calls a Smart Mailbox.
Messages remain where they were originally. VIP points directly to each
message so you can access them without dealing with other messages in your
inbox. I believe VIP only watches the inbox. Either way, just remove any
email address you no longer wish considered as VIP to have those messages
disappear from VIP.

I really need a detailed description of the phone's physical layout before

doesn't discuss the iPhone 5, at least not that I can find.

I'm using an Otter Box case, so I can access most everything without

Anyone know where I can get this info so it makes more sense from a

Ariadne misses lots of cross streets, and Apple Maps with VoiceOver

No turn by turn directions are available, but it's easy to select an

Re: Blindsquare: my favourite iOS navigation app thus far

2013-01-20 Thread Grant Hardy
Excellent points Don, I have no idea what finally made me decide to
buy the app but I definitely never would have considered using it in
the past. I never use FourSquare, and I didn't imagine the app would
be that much different from other blindness-specific GPS apps. But
within the first few minutes of using it, I realized that it truly was
a different paradigm and in general, gives me the information I want
to know. I'm sure you're right, that getting data from Foursquare
yields information other maps simply don't know about. If only iOS
allowed us to try apps before purchasing them, BlindSquare would have
been on my phone a lot sooner.

Grant

On 1/20/13, Don Breda don.br...@gmail.com wrote:

Just my opinion but if you have been on the fence take a look at this
app, give it the attention it deserves and I can't imagine you will
 regret it.

 Don

Thanks for the correction Les. I was pretty sure that you could find
an exact street address, but after posting my review I had a quick
look and couldn't find the option. Wanted to make sure I wasn't making
claims that weren't true. ;) Thanks for confirming that yes, you can
look for exact street addresses.

mention that in my experience, BlindSquare, which uses open street map
data and FourSquare points of interest, offers me the best experience
analogous to holding a Trekker Breeze or a Sendero GPS system while

We have used this for about a week now, and it's pretty amazing at times.

Re: Entering Credit Card Dates?

2013-01-20 Thread Marcy Weinberg
You double tap the picture to activate, then you swipe up-and-down with one
finger and then that will choose the month Or day or whatever the choices are
in the picker. When you find the one you want, you can double tap it, or flick
to the left or right and find the done button.

Re: Are you satisfied with your IPad Mini?

2013-01-20 Thread Marcy Weinberg
I think each device has put things that can be done with them. The iPhone is
obviously a phone, and can be used whenever and wherever you are regardless of
Wi-Fi. I have the iPad Mini Wi-Fi only in addition, and I use it every single
day. I check my email, go to Safari, and use many of the apps. This helps to
save the battery life on my iPhone.

I had an iPod touch fourth-generation, and hope to eventually get an iPod five.
With it I would listen to music as well as podcasts, and it would also help to
save the battery life of my phone. And, unlike the iPad, it would fit in my
pocket.

But to answer your basic question once again, I absolutely love my iPad mini.

Re: aProblem with I books.

2013-01-20 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
If I'm in I books, when I get to the page chooser, I use spacebar dots six or
spacebar dots 3 to go back. I did also try space bar o and spacebar ow for some
reason these did not work at times, so I put the speech back on, flicked up two
fingers to read, when the page changed, silence speech, turn speech off with
spacebar M and start reading again. then with speech off, braille display wd
work normally again.

Re: Object recognition app

2013-01-20 Thread Katey Glass
Thanks Tom,

I was able to remember the name by going to AppleVis. I downloaded it onto my
iPhone 4S and using moderate room light I was able to get it to successfully
identify nearly all the objects I placed in front of it. For a first version I
think it's pretty good, but like others have said a repeat function would be
good. I will admit I have some sight so I can line things up pretty well, even
if I can't read the print myself, but even items placed upside down are
recognized. I will have to see how my friend who has less vision than I do and
who says she can't use her Camara to do VizWiz or other apps like that does
with this.

Thanks,

Katey

Dish app update to new release on Thurs

2013-01-20 Thread Shane clark
Hi all,
I spoke with dish this evening, and they said an update would be available for
the new Dish anywhere app that was released on Thursday. The number that I have
for this app is 312. Can anyone confirm if this is a fixed update to the app,
and if so, does voice over work with it now? And does the search feature work
again to where you can see what's coming up on Tv?

RE: Object recognition app

2013-01-20 Thread E V
Hello Deb,

Tap TapSee has a camera button. It works best for objects that are
relatively close up. For example, it can recognize a coke can, an office
style telephone set, even US currency, etc. It also appears as though the
conversion might take place in the cloud, but not absolutely clear about
that. The recognition may take up to 5 seconds. To gain confidence with
it, I would shoot items that are close-up.

I really thought I had successfully used the bluetooth with my iPhone before,
but it has been a while. For some reason voiceover isn't coming through the

I use to use this bluetooth with my HTC Ozone. It is a plantronics, but I'm

 plantronics 2xx.

Do y'all have any thoughts or suggestions? I'm reluctant to run out and buy

AS a side note here. I just read about another plantronics on Amazon. I

Re: toggling screen curtain, and adding music content to Ipad 3?

2013-01-20 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

screen curtain is toggled on/off with a 3 finger triple tap. Things are added
to the app switcher just by opening them. Open mail, it ends up in your app
switcher. Open contacts, it ends up in your app switcher, etc. To close items
in your app switcher, move voiceover focus to an app in the app switcher then
double tap and hold your finger down on the 2nd tap. Hold down until you hear
editing apps. Now, double tap on the apps you wish to remove from the app
switcher.

To manually put music on your IOS device, you can select the songs you want,
copy with command C, move to the sources table, navigate to your device and
paste. Another way to do this is to actually check off the artists, playlists,
albums, etc that you want to be synced to your device. This is done by
navigating to your device in the sources table, then VO right until you get to
the music button and select that. Now, Navigate to the scroll area and
interact and you will see these options.

Re: New and seeking iPhone Info

2013-01-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I think you may be referring to the tactile screen protectors from
speeddots.com. They neither defeat the purpose of a touch screen nor are
intended as just introductory teaching aids. I have one of their tactile
screen protectors on my iPhone 4S. They are quite subtle and don't get
in the way of operating the touch screen at all. I can also pick up
another iPhone without a tactile screen protector and use it just fine.
I find that it does help me at times orient myself to the screen,
especially when I'm using my iPhone in a non-standard way, like with
just one hand. For example, it lets me know if my swipes are horizontal
or not.

 Hi Lisa,
I don't think there is all that much difference between the 5 and the
4s, with respect to the physical layout, except the 5 has the larger
screen. So the book you have from NBP should give you the accurate
info. Is there something specific you are looking for that isn't in
 the book?\

Re: Home automation

2013-01-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
As someone else said, how many apps are truly necessary. I don't have
such an app, but I also don't have a talking thermostat either. If I
were to upgrade to an accessible thermostat, I'd definitely consider
going with a network capable thermostat along with an accessible app.
From what I could tell, it wasn't any more expensive. I also don't think
this is just for a blind person who travels a lot, and I wouldn't assume
there aren't blind travellers out there, but also for someone who leaves
their house for the day and goes into work. It would give me piece of
mind knowing I could remotely check the lights, thermostats and the like
in my house. Note that these systems aren't designed or made especially
for the blind, so there's no reason to think a blind person wouldn't get
just as much out of these accessible apps as our sighted counterparts,
who obviously also want such capabilities.

I read about the belkin on Amazon, and it received really mixed

Lol, maybe I'll shelf this idea for later, and purchase the simple

You can check to make sure you turned the iron off, after you’ve
already left. WeMo Switch is the iPhone home remote.

 The Complete WeMo System.

The WeMo App runs on your iPhone and controls any electronic
device you plug into a WeMo Switch—if you can plug it in, you can
turn it on or off with WeMo. And WeMo Motion lets you control the
devices when motion is detected. Have the floor lamp go on when
you enter the living room, and turn off when you leave.

WeMo Switch and WeMo Motion are available at major retailers.

The WeMo family of products is great at automating repetitive
tasks, and at allowing you to control your household in ways
 you’d never thought possible.

The beauty of WeMo is it’s completely modular. You can control as
much or as little of your home as you like. Control one light,

Subject: text file reader for the iPhone

Hello, I know this has been asked and answered much, probably,
but could someone tell me what a good app is for reading .txt
and/or .rtf files on the iPhone?

Thanks.

Re: text file reader for the iPhone

2013-01-20 Thread Brett
Hi,.

Two I would recommend iLike2Read and voice dream reader. Voice dream reader
will read more document types and has a wide variety of voices, which sound
great and can be sped up more than VoiceOver. However, currently with VoiceOver
you cannot see the text if you wanted to check the spelling of a word, for
example. The author is working on this though..

ILike2Read uses VoiceOver for it's output and does let you see the text.
However, at least for me it has become buggy, since upgrading to iOS 6.
