I use documents II for text files. It does not edit word .doc or .docx files.
For word files, the only accessible option is Pages.

Only a few percent per hour. Bluetooth is managed extremely well by iOS. Also,
Bluetooth is a low power short range communication technology. Wifi drains
battery more rapidly, but only when actually connected and transmitting /

Re: Blindsquare: my favourite iOS navigation app thus far

2013-01-22 Thread Don Breda
Truthfully I suggest just getting outside and walking around your
neighborhood with the app running. It will do the work for you.

It will start telling you whats nearby.

After a while you can cutsomize it by letting it know things your not
interested in hearing about just buy turning the category on or off,
simple toggles.

The other setting you need to play with after a bit is the distance
setting. This says ow many feet you want to look ahead. Shortening the
distance it looks ahead can help sometimes when you just want to know
what is close to you.

Another setting is the way it tells you information about direction.

You can decide if you want the area described as a clock face, or
compass directions or where things are in degrees.

Don't worry abou tthis just run it and after a bit you will decide how
you want things set.

Subject: Question on Worder and Word Warp Games

Hi Folks,

A few games were mentioned on this list for anagram type games, those being
Worder and Word Warp.

I have downloaded and purchased the apps where necessary, and I find them to be
almost confusing in their design.

When flicking left and right, the app only picks up the bottom five letters in
the grid, I'm referring to Worder here, then, to top it off, when double
tapping a letter, a completely different letter from the grid gets input into
the edit field.

I mean, it wouldn't be a big deal if I only had to find the letters by roaming
around on the screen, but if the letters aren't going to enter properly, then I
can't see where this game is at all playable.

The worst part is that there's no rhyme nor reason to the letter changes. For
example, I was given the nine letters that form the word stupidity, with the
top three letters being S T U, and the middle letters being D I I, and the last
three letters being P T Y.

Double tapping the I button inputs a T in the box, double tapping the S inputs
a U in the field and so on.

Later on, after I've cleared the letters and start going by my original
placement of the letters, I get completely new letters in the place where the
incorrect letters were to begin with.

Does anyone, or can anyone give a brief synopsis as to how we play this game.

I admit, I've only toyed with it twice, and the settings are relatively
accessible, along with the instructions, and the buttons look to be well
labeled, but, as I said, if I can't input the letters correctly, then there's
no point to having the game.

The second game was Word Warp. I can't remember if I actually paid for this
app, however, the buttons aren't labeled correctly, and it's almost impossible
to see how to start the game.

Again, my initial query is asked.

Does anyone have instructions on how to play this game, or, at the very least,
have instructions on what buttons can be labeled and what they should be
labeled as?

Normally, I would consider it my own fault as I had just taken an app and
purchased it on my own with no input from any members on this list, but I was
under the assumption that since it was recommended by the members on the list,
it would be at least a little bit accessible.

Am I wrong in deducing this?

I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Re: Question on Worder and Word Warp Games

2013-01-22 Thread Sherrie
I love the Worder game and find that I can play for a short while before it
starts inputting the incorrect letters as you described. I have a feeling that
the game works very well with a keyboard but has the flaw you mentioned when
using swipes and touches. You can flick through the letter grid at the top
although the layout is a button then three letters then another button three
letters etc. So sometimes I flick and sometimes move my finger over the
letters. To find the letters with my finger I start at the far right at the top
to move to the row I want.
I did discover that when it starts inputting the incorrect letters I could just
leave the game for a while and then it worked when I resumed the game.

I did contact the seller and received an email back that he would work on this
in a future upgrade. But I am sure if you also contacted him it would probably
help in that he would not think I was just playing it incorrectly.
The email for the developer is
From: pe...@peterdamen.com

I like playing this game more now that I have the Speed Dots screen protector
on my phone as the enter and found buttons are on the raised dots.
I also suggested that the developer add a small sound to indicate whether a
word is correct or incorrect so it would not be necessary to go to the found
button to check the number to see if the current entry was added to the found
list.

Actually I often play the game Word Target instead because the accessibility is
just about as good as it gets. It is a paid app but really works.
The main difference is that in Word Target you have the nine letters and you
must include the center target letter in each word. You also have a 4 letter
minimum word length. Worder can be played without the target letter and can be
set to a minimum word length of 3 which is what I like about it.
In Word Target the letters tell you if the tiles are up or down and a sound is
played for correct and incorrect answers.
Here is the reply from the developer of Worder:
,Thank you for the feedback. I have had many blind people contact me with
enhancement requests.. which I am slowly adding.
I will attempt to get the issue that you have raised fixed.. and add an
audible tone for correct and failed words.
I will try and get these improvements done in early January.

Thanks,
Peter

the grid, I'm referring to Worder here, then, to top it off, when double
tapping a letter, a completely different letter from the grid gets input into
the edit field.

Does anyone have instructions on how to play this game, or, at the very least,
have instructions on what buttons can be labeled and what they should be
labeled as?

Normally, I would consider it my own fault as I had just taken an app and
purchased it on my own with no input from any members on

Re: contacts, ring tones, favorites and voice mail

2013-01-22 Thread Paul Ferrara
Hello, the putting someone on hold thing isn't hard; when a call comes in
touch the bottom left of the screen. You should hear hold call plus answer
button. If you do, double tap it and that is what it will do. If you touch
too far to the right, you will hear end call plus answer button. Double
tapping that ends the call, of course, and answers the other call. Flick
left or right if you don't hear the desired button.
I apologize if I have the placement of the buttons reversed, but they are
both there.

The ringtone thing is more complecated. There are pieces of software that
accomplish this, but you can also try iTunes.

Open iTunes on the phone and select more and then tones.
If you want to search for a particular artist or genre, type it into the
search box. You may get better results if you have an artist in mind. The
results from iTunes are in headings. It will offer albums and songs first,
and you could accidentally pick one of them if you are not careful. When you
find tones, they will be displayed. Remember not all songs and artists are
available when it comes to ringtones.

Take care.

Hi all,

I have a few more questions. I have 83 contacts in my phone. I noticed
that
the heading in my contacts for example start with a capital A meaning that
all my contacts starting with the letter a would be under the capital A's
and so on with each capital letter in the heading going all the way down
through my contacts. I this supposed to be like this?

Also, in my contacts I want to put certain ring tones with certain
contacts.
I want through the different ring tones that were in my phone and there's
only a couple that I would use and the rest I don't care for. So this
question will be a two part question. Here's the first part of my
question.
How do I put certain ring tones with certain contacts? Also, can I have
music a ring tone when someone calls my phone and how do I go about doing
that. I want to have a country music ring tone on my phone when someone
calls my phone?

Also if I'm talking on my phone and someone calls in on my phone while I'm
already talking to someone, how do I put the person I'm talking to on hold
so I can answer the other line? And Ihow do I answer the other line? What
are the step by step directions to do this?

A couple more questions and then I will shut up for now. What is favorites
in my phone? Also if someone leaves me voice mail on my phone how do I go
in
and retrieve my voice mail and listen to it? Then how do you delete it to
get rid of it? Also in recent how do you get rid of the incoming calls that

RE: iHome Brand. Any thoughts?

2013-01-22 Thread Thom
We have the iHome dual clock radio.Honestly, all we seem to use it for is a
charging station and a really nice quality sound for our music when we want
to play it a bit loud. We don't use the apps or the alarms that are built
in. If we want an alarm, we just set it on the iPhone and make sure the
volume is turned up on the iHome. When it goes off, we sure hear it.

We keep ours in protective cases and had to purchase some extenders, so that
we wouldn't have to take the phone out of it's case. This tends to make the
phone a bit back heavy, meaning it wants to tilt backwards. We use something
to prop it up on to take off some of that weight. It seems that most docks
have a slight tilt to the 30 pin port to allow the sighted to see the screen
a little better. With the extender and weight of the case though, it makes
it feel flimsy.

HTH,
Thom

Re: Home automation

2013-01-22 Thread Denny Schwab
Hello,

I would like to hear from someone who has used this WeMo application
before. Is it truely VoiceOver compatible, or not. I have done some
research on my own and I have learned that you can actually send txt
messages to the units to turn them on, but I can't find any
accessibility reviews for them anywhere or for this application.

Thanks,

Denny

Hi Marissa,

What version of iOS do you have? If Apple thinks your problem may be
resolved in iOS 6, then you can just upgrade your phone if you haven't done
so yet.

I assume iOS 6.1 will be released in the next 3-4 weeks or so, nobody really
knows of course, but as per Rob from the Today in iOS Podcast they are on
the third or fourth Beta and that was before Christmas. I'd expect they
release the Goldmaster of iOS 6.1 in the next couple of weeks and then the
public release should follow pretty quick.

Sage 50 and was known by other names way back in the 90's. I believe Sage

it's not perfect but quite useable.

I am not sure if you find much with respect to apps, I assume if you were
using some sort of cloud accounting service like Wave accounting they do
offer apps. However, a PC based accounting package usually uses an SQL
database or other database to store the information which means an app would
have to access that information.

I use it for my retail business and also to do Payroll, not sure what your

Re: Question on Worder and Word Warp Games

Hi,

 Hi Folks,

A few games were mentioned on this list for anagram type games, those being
 Worder and Word Warp.

I have downloaded and purchased the apps where necessary, and I find them to
be almost confusing in their design.

When flicking left and right, the app only picks up the bottom five letters
in the grid, I'm referring to Worder here, then, to top it off, when double
tapping a letter, a completely different letter from the grid gets input into
 the edit field.

I mean, it wouldn't be a big deal if I only had to find the letters by
roaming around on the screen, but if the letters aren't going to enter
properly, then I can't see where this game is at all playable.

The worst part is that there's no rhyme nor reason to the letter changes.
For example, I was given the nine letters that form the word stupidity, with
the top three letters being S T U, and the middle letters being D I I, and
the last three letters being P T Y.

Double tapping the I button inputs a T in the box, double tapping the S
inputs a U in the field and so on.

I can't remember if I actually paid for this
app, however, the buttons aren't labeled correctly, and it's almost
impossible to see how to start the game.

Again, my initial query is asked.

Does anyone have instructions on how to play this game, or, at the very
least, have instructions on what buttons can be labeled and what they should
 be labeled as?

Normally, I would consider it my own fault as I had just taken an app and
purchased it on my own with no input from any members on this list, but I was
under the assumption that since it was recommended by the members on the
list, it would be at least a little bit accessible.

Am I wrong in deducing this?

I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

RE: Bluetooth headset again, please help!

2013-01-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Mária,

Below is some information about the M55 from Amazon.com. I know you are not
in the US and may not be able to order from there, but I find that
Amazon.com is a great site to find out about products and read reviews. As
you can see the fact that the M55 is a Bluetooth 3.0 device and has A2DP is
clearly stated. It also, by the way, has an Amazon rating of 3.2 out of 5
which is OK, but not great. It is of course a reasonably priced device so I
would say it will probably do fine since Plantronics for the most part makes
good products.

Plantronics M55 - Amazon.com price $49.99, sale price $38.97

M55 Key Features:
• Take calls without pressing a button--just say Answer
• Vocalyst service lets you use your voice to manage emails, texts, and more
(US only)
• DeepSleep mode extends battery life for up to 5 months
• Alerts for battery level and more
• Bluetooth 3.0 technology including A2DP Bluetooth profile for audio
streaming capabilities
• Hear music, videos, driving directions, and more from your smartphone
• Fits comfortably in either ear
• Up to 11 hours of talk time
• Pairs with any Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone or device

Product Description
The Plantronics M55 Bluetooth headset lets you do more with your
voice--answer calls without pressing buttons or use the Vocalyst service to
manage emails
and more (Vocalyst is for US customers only). And the new DeepSleep mode
lets the M55 stay charged for up to 5 months, so it's ready when you want to
hear music, Internet radio, or simply
take a call.
Carrying the latest Bluetooth 3.0 technology, the M55 includes the A2DP
Bluetooth profile for audio streaming capabilities, so you can listen to
music,
podcasts, or GPS directions from your smartphone. With its multipoint
pairing capability, you can quickly switch active connections between two
paired
phones and answer calls from either one.
The M55 includes voice alerts that can whisper talk time, battery level, and
more. Other features include enhanced clarity on wideband-enabled
smartphones,
reduced noise, wind, and echo for better call clarity, a comfortable fit in
either ear, and up to 11 hours of talk time. The M55 offers micro-USB
charging,
and you'll get a full charge after being plugged in for 2 hours. It's backed
by a 1-year limited warranty.

Always Ready with DeepSleep Mode
Plantronics DeepSleep power-saving mode activates when your M55 is away from
your phone for over 90 minutes. When it's back in range (33 feet or less),
you can just tap the Call button to wake it up. Using the DeepSleep mode
can extend the standard 16 days of standby time up to 150 days.

Voice Answer
The M55 lets you be truly hands free when a call comes in. You'll hear a
ringtone in the headset, and then it will ask: Incoming call, answer or
ignore.
If you want to answer the call, just say answer. It's that easy.

Vocalyst Voice Service
The Vocalyst service allows you to stay connected with your voice. You can
say Facebook to post to Facebook, Listen to Email to hear your email, or
Reminder to record a reminder. You can even listen to up-to-the-minute
news, sports, and weather feeds--all hands-free. Vocalyst works with any
phone,
and has additional features for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry, and is
offered free for the first year (a $24.99 value).

What's in the Box
Plantronics M55 headset; clip-on earloop; USB cable; charger; operating
instructions.

Hi list,
I have another question about bluetooth headset.
Please, does anyone have experience with Plantronics Explorer M55? Does
it support A2DP profile?
One of local stores has this model and it is of affordable price, but
A2DP is not mentioned at all.
If anyone could help, it would be highly appreciated.
Thanks.

RE: iCloud.com

2013-01-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Shane,

The iCloud.com website is not very accessible no matter what screenreader
you use and this even applies to using it with Safari on a Mac with
Voiceover.

However, if you use Jaws and know how to use the Jaws cursor well you can do
some stuff. I find there really isn't much I need to do on there, the most
useful function if you don't have another iDevice would be to activate the
Find My iPhone feature and cause your iPhone to emit a sound and this is
possible with Jaws, but as I said, it's not the easiest thing to do. Jaws
will read buttons like log in or sign in whatever it says, but it doesn't
necessarily activate them with enter or space. Instead try and route the
Jaws to PC and then do a left mouse click.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: using simultaneously 2 bluetooth units

2013-01-22 Thread David Chittenden
Sure, if you are concerned over about 2% to 5% of battery power per hour when
devices are connected, and up to 1% per hour (usually less) when devices are
not connected, you should definitely be vigilant about turning the Bluetooth
radio off except when you want to connect something. Since I am not concerned
about such minimal amounts of power (I use my iPhone like my computer, so need
to charge every day, but get much better battery life than my laptop), 1% or
less per hour does not make a difference.

The same is the case for wifi. Unless you are using an app which utilises wifi,
the wifi radio remains virtually dormant. In fact, the 1% power use per hour I
have noticed is with both bluetooth and wifi turned on.

GPS radio reception, on the other hand, uses around 10% to 15% per hour when
being accessed by a navigation app. For this reason, I remove navigation apps
from the app switcher after use just in case they call the GPS radio whilst in
standby.

In my personal opinion, considering how functional the iPhone is, if someone
removes all the functionality to preserve battery life for avoiding plugging in
at the end of each day, why not spend considerably less for an accessible
Android basic phone. Wasting the true power of the iPhone as a portable
computer because one is so focused on preserving battery life for a couple /
few days honestly does not make sense to me.
This is especially the case with the iPhone 5 and its lightning connector, the
easiest connector for a portable device I have ever used.

your options when battery levels are a concern is wasting the power of

Grant, I believe you can, however search for an address through the
Myplace is option. I've done this to find the office and I work out of

Just a correction, I did not mean to state that one can search by

 Cheers.

I know this app has been discussed on list before, but just wanted to
mention that in my experience, BlindSquare, which uses open street map
data and FourSquare points of interest, offers me the best experience
analogous to holding a Trekker Breeze or a Sendero GPS system while
walking. The information can be a little verbose, but you can change
what gets announced. Cross streets are consistently announced as well
as your heading, which do not work reliably for me in other apps.
Ariadne misses lots of cross streets, and Apple Maps with VoiceOver
repeats many data numerous times while omitting lots of cross streets.
Blindsquare can also track your distance and direction from any of the
POIs it knows about, a custom address, or even a custom POI. So you
have both commercial POIs and custom POIs in the same app, which is a
 nice bonus.

No turn by turn directions are available, but it's easy to select an
address or a POI and tell BlindSquare to open another navigation app
such as Apple Maps or Navigon, with the destination already set up so
you can easily plan a route. And since BlindSquare uses its own speech
rather than VoiceOver, it'll continue talking even while your device
is locked or while you're in another navigation app.

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but just wanted to offer this brief
review because I've been very very impressed with an app that I never
thought I'd use--I don't use FourSquare! With BlindSquare, I feel
confident that most of the data you'd expect to hear from a blindness
specific GPS device will be there for me.

RE: Help! No sound at all through the speaker

2013-01-22 Thread Thom
Hey Reggie,
Try this. I think that your volume has turned down.
Unlock the phone by hitting the home button, then touching in the lower left
of the screen.
Double tap. This should unlock it. if you have a bluetooth keyboard, you can
unlock the screen as well, by VO +space bar
Two finger swipe up, then keep hitting the up volume button1
This should bring your volume up.
If not,
triple hit the home button to turn voice over on and repeat the above steps.

Re: Blindsquare: my favourite iOS navigation app thus far

2013-01-22 Thread Grant Hardy
Yes you can. You have the vast collection of POIs from Foursquare but
you can also make your own POIs. Furthermore, you can monitor a spot
by entering its address rather than going there first and marking the
spot. That likely won't be quite as accurate but it should still get
you within a few meters of the destination.

With Navigon providing turn by turn directions in the background and
BlindSquare announcing nearby POIs, heading, distance from my
destination and so forth, I feel I have a fairly competitive set of
navigation tools on hand.

Hi Shane,

The iCloud.com website is not very accessible no matter what screenreader
you use and this even applies to using it with Safari on a Mac with
Voiceover.

However, if you use Jaws and know how to use the Jaws cursor well you can
do

Sieghard

Strange problem with bluetooth headset

2013-01-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Hi all.

I am having a problem with my motorola hx550 bluetooth headset intermittently.
I actually have two of them since a2dp won't work on a second phone and this
only is happening so far with my iPhone 5 and not my 4. What sometimes happens
is that I will answer a call and the person can apparently hear me but I either
hear myself and/or what is happening where I am. I've also had this with
placing a call; I think the call goes through but I hear my own environment;
for instance if I have an audiobook playing I'll hear that right through my
headset instead of the call. Any idea what could be triggering this?

Help With Box wave Case For iPhone 5

2013-01-22 Thread Jessica Diaz
Hi All
This might not be an exact iPhone question but I thought I would give it a
try. I got a new box wave buddy keyboard case for my iPhone 5. It arrived at
the beginning of this month. After a successful pair I used it for a few
days without even charging it. When it died finally and I went to charge it,
the keyboard is dead. I am sure I am using the cord that came with it and
have left it on the charge all night. Any suggestions? I'm using a new dell
with windows 8 but don't think that makes a difference.

Truthfully I suggest just getting outside and walking around your
neighborhood with the app running. It will do the work for you.

It will start telling you whats nearby.

After a while you can cutsomize it by letting it know things your not
interested in hearing about just buy turning the category on or off, simple
toggles.

The other setting you need to play with after a bit is the distance setting.
This says ow many feet you want to look ahead. Shortening the distance it
looks ahead can help sometimes when you just want to know what is close to
you.

Another setting is the way it tells you information about direction.

You can decide if you want the area described as a clock face, or compass
directions or where things are in degrees.

Don't worry abou tthis just run it and after a bit you will decide how you
want things set.

Hello, the putting someone on hold thing isn't hard; when a call comes in
touch the bottom left of the screen. You should hear hold call plus
answer button. If you do, double tap it and that is what it will do. If
you touch too far to the right, you will hear end call plus answer
button. Double tapping that ends the call, of course, and answers the
other call. Flick left or right if you don't hear the desired button.

When
you find tones, they will be displayed. Remember not all songs and artists
are available when it comes to ringtones.

Take care.

Hi all,

I have a few more questions. I have 83 contacts in my phone. I noticed
that
the heading in my contacts for example start with a capital A meaning
that

all my contacts starting with the letter a would be under the capital A's
and so on with each capital letter in the heading going all the way down
through my contacts.

What is
favorites

in my phone? Also if someone leaves me voice mail on my phone how do I go
in
and retrieve my voice mail and listen to it? Then how do you delete it to
get rid of it? Also in recent how do you get rid of the incoming calls
that

came in and all the out going calls going out, how do you clear everything
out or delete it? Thanks for answering all of my questions for me. Take
care.

 The extreme doesn't have this.

You can take your iPhone connect via wifi to the airport express, and
with the appropriate patch ord stream any audio your listening to on
your iPhone to your stereo in beautiful quality and keep voiceovers

 stereo.

You can also control the music volume separately from voiceovers volume

Re: Answering a call on a iPhone 5

2013-01-22 Thread David Chittenden
Two finger double tap answers and ends phone calls. You can practice the
gesture in the practice area - settings, general, accessibility, voice-over,
practice area. This is how I always answer my iPhone.

Oh, do not press the power button whilstill the iPhone is ringing. Pressing
power button automatically sends the call to voice mail.

Re: Iphone 5 satisfaction ?

2013-01-22 Thread David Chittenden
Many people are against Apple in principle now that it has become such a large
and successful company. I, on the other hand, have become an Apple fan boy
because Apple has done more for accessibility than any other computer company
in history. Thanks to Apple, I can use any iPhone and any Mac, straight out of
the box. Even their Apple TV is fully accessible.

VO is the same in any iOS device. IPhone 5 has a faster processor, twice as
much operating RAM, and a larger display which permits more apps per page, and
more apps per folder. Also, GPS antenna is significantly better, in my
experience. Contrary to some reports, iPhone 5 is significantly better than
iPhone 4S.

re: Iphone5 Says Double-Tap To Delete?

2013-01-22 Thread Joshua Klander
Hello. Firstly, when sending a post to the list, it is always a
good idea to present as much information as posible about your
problem. It will help people to better determine what is going
on. Under what circumstances does your iPhone say double-tap to
delete? If this happens on your home screen, this means that you
have used the double-tap and hold gesture (where you double tap
and hold on an app icon) After you have done this, double-tapping
on an app will delet it, rather than open it. You can fix this
by pressing the home button.

Re: making folders on the IPhone

2013-01-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
To create a folder, double tap and hold on an app until you hear the
tones. Now slide that app until it's on top of another app you want to
be in the same folder. A new folder will be created. the Iphone will
pick a folder name for you, but you can edit this. Note that I find it
easiest for you to explore the screen first and know where the apps are
located on the screen before starting to move them around.

To remove an app from your iPhone, do a double tap and hold on any app
until you hear the tones. Now double tap on the app you want to remove.

I wouldn't be surprised if this question had already been answered, so
sorry if that was the case.

I found gmail's server stuff to be quite frustrating. You need to work your way
in to gmail's profile handling of messages and tell it to delete messages when
you delete them. The default setting is to save all messages on the server. It
took me a couple weeks to figure out what was going on. I still have over
100,000 messages to clear out. I have been using gmail since 2004.

You are probably moving your finger too fast and then lifting it from the
screen. IOS interprets this as a vertical flick. Vertical flick is perform the
action selected in the rotor. For moving on the screen, it is smaller movements
that are not too fast. do not remove your finger from the display until VO
starts speaking the item.On the Braille display, dot 7 with space bar is delete
and dot 8 with space bar is enter. Braille Edge may have set it up so dot 7
sends the dot 7 chord key codes. Try dot 7 with other dots, all pressed
simeltaniously. Don't forget k chord is keyboard help.

consistently having a problem with the Slide one finger up or down,
gesture. I think it's being confused with my swipe. There's an adjustable
page scroll spot on my home screen that I cannot seem to slide up or down to
change value, but can split-tape it. Same thing with my double tap and
hold, gesture; when switching the keyboard between letters and numbers or
symbols, When I double-tap the more, spot, it'll say, more, numbers, then
I have to double tap and hold again to get the numbers to actually appear.
It's almost three gestures in one just to switch the keyboard map. When I
slide up or down to change a value, Vo seems to interpret this as a swipe or
two-finger flick-up and starts reading the whole screen. Every time I check
the rotor, it's set to containers. So, maybe I need to refine my gestures a
bit more. But, I've taken this thing out of the boxes and am now up to using

Folders are a purely visual situation. Double tap and hold with one finger on
an app (pass through gesture). After the tritone, slide your finger slowly and
the app will move. Place it on top of another app and a folder will
automatically and both apps will be in it. I believe you can have up to 16 apps
per folder. Drag other apps you want in the folder so that they are on top of
the folder. When you lift your finger the apps automatically go in the folder.

delete? If this happens on your home screen, this means that you
have used the double-tap and hold gesture (where you double tap
and hold on an app icon) After you have done this, double-tapping
on an app will delet it, rather than open it. You can fix this
 by pressing the home button.

Installing an app on an iDevice

2013-01-22 Thread Lauren Simmons

Hi all,

Before I lose the rest of my f'n mind with this thing, how the hell does one
install something purchased from the freakin apple store. I have fumbled my
way into making a purchase, but I can't figure out how to install the damn
thing on to my iPod Touch 5th. Do I have to pair the device with itunes on
my computer? What does one have to do to complete a task as simple as
installing an F'n app?

there have been a few occasions when I've had to go back and grab a
message I deleted not to long ago. You get over 7G of storage with Gmail
so I am not hesitant to use it.

well. I seem to be consistently having a problem with the Slide one

I cannot seem to slide up or down to change value, but can
 split-tape it.  Same thing with my double tap and hold, gesture;

When I double-tap the more, spot, it'll say, more, numbers, then I
have to double tap and hold again to get the numbers to actually

this as a swipe or two-finger flick-up and starts reading the whole

Lost VoiceOver After Reset

2013-01-22 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
After reading a recent post to the list last night I was trying to play the
Escape The House game on my iPhone 4 running IOS 6.01 and I kept getting kicked
out of the app. This continued even after clearing the app switcher, so, says
I, time for a reset, which I did by holding down the sleep/wake button and home
key at the same time for a few seconds. When the phone came back up, VoiceOver
was not running and wouldn't start even after triple-clicking the home key. I
have some questions.

First, is this VoiceOver loss situation common among all models of the iPhone
running IOS 6.01, or is it relatively rare and hard to reproduce?
Second, if it's fairly common, is Apple planning to do something about it?
Third, instead of doing the reset that I just described, would simply powering
down the phone and restarting it have been a better idea?
Lastly, I'd really like to check out the Escape the House game and wonder if I
should uninstall and reinstall it to resolve the issue of being unceremoniously
dumped out of the app when trying to get past the first screen.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Interesting, I'm using IMAP with Gmail on my iPhone, and only the last
50 messages are downloaded to my iPhone, and even then larger messages
are truncated. I have messages in my in box going back to 2011 at the

deleted or filed in various folders, but having those messages in my in
box isn't keeping me from using email on my iPhone. Maybe the iPad is
different, and tries to synch everything in your in box.

Re: Lost VoiceOver After Reset

2013-01-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I won't try to define rare or common but it does seem to have happened to
several people on this list, myself included. It's been reported I would
usually try simply turning off and on before I tried reset anyway.

That being said, I also have noticed some other things happen when people
thought their phones lost voiceover. This is in no way to claim that it doesn't
happen at all.

1. I've seen people tap from a locked screen three times; by this I mean that
even the slide to unlock wasn't up when they started though of course you
don't know that by sound when voiceover hasn't been turned on yet.
2. I've seen people think vo hadn't come back on when actually the phone hadn't
come back on at all. Actually, I've done that one myself so now i'm more
cautious.

Again, this is not to say that the no voiceover after reset bug doesn't
happen. It is just a mention of other things that can also happen and be
mistaken for losing voiceover.

I should uninstall and reinstall it to resolve the issue of being
unceremoniously dumped out of the app when trying to get past the first
 screen.

 Thanks in advance.

Re: Installing an app on an iDevice

2013-01-22 Thread Tom Lange

Hi Lauren,
I dpurchase all of my apps using the App Store on my iPhone. I've never ever
used iTunes to purchase or install an app on my iPhone and absolutely refuse
to use iTunes for those purposes; it just hasn't been necessary, at least in
my experience. While in the App Store on my iPhone, after locating an app
that I want to purchase, I typically start at the place in the top left
portion of the screen where the app's name is displayed, then do a
single-finger flick right until I find the app's price and double-tap on it.
That button will then change to a button labeled Install. Double-tapping
the Install button will start the installation process.
I may get prompted for my Apple ID and password; often the Apple ID is
already filled in for me. If so, the password field will be editable and I
fill it in using the onscreen keyboard or my attached bluetooth keyboard.
Right above the onscreen keyboard ar OK and Cancel buttons. Double-tap OK
and installation will begin. If installation is apt to take a while, as in
the case of large apps, I'll tap the Home button and will be placed on the
screen where the newly-installed app is going to be located. I flick my way
around the screen until I find it, and when I do, I can then hear VoiceOver
tell me how installation is progressing, in much the way that a Windows
screen reader such as JAWS or Window-Eyes will read a progress bar. When
installation is complete, I'll hear VoiceOver say the app's name followed by
the word New, and the app is ready to load.

I hope this helps. Like I said, make it easy on yourself, do yourself a
favor and do all your app purchases on the device itself rather than messing
around with iTunes.

Subject: Installing an app on an iDevice

Hi all,

Before I lose the rest of my f'n mind with this thing, how the hell does
one install something purchased from the freakin apple store. I have
fumbled my way into making a purchase, but I can't figure out how to
install the damn thing on to my iPod Touch 5th. Do I have to pair the
device with itunes on my computer? What does one have to do to complete a
task as simple as installing an F'n app?

Re: Lost VoiceOver After Reset

2013-01-22 Thread Jose Lomeli
I have been having the same issue here running iOS 6.01 on an iPod touch
4th generation!

Sent from my iPod

I won't try to define rare or common but it does seem to have happened
to several people on this list, myself included. It's been reported I
would usually try simply turning off and on before I tried reset anyway.

That being said, I also have noticed some other things happen when people
thought their phones lost voiceover. This is in no way to claim that it
doesn't happen at all.

1. I've seen people tap from a locked screen three times; by this I mean
that even the slide to unlock wasn't up when they started though of
course you don't know that by sound when voiceover hasn't been turned on
yet.
2. I've seen people think vo hadn't come back on when actually the phone
hadn't come back on at all. Actually, I've done that one myself so now i'm
more cautious.

Again, this is not to say that the no voiceover after reset bug doesn't
happen. It is just a mention of other things that can also happen and be
mistaken for losing voiceover.

Hi,
After reading a recent post to the list last night I was trying to play the
Escape The House game on my iPhone 4 running IOS 6.01 and I kept getting
kicked out of the app. This continued even after clearing the app
switcher, so, says I, time for a reset, which I did by holding down the
sleep/wake button and home key at the same time for a few seconds. When
the phone came back up, VoiceOver was not running and wouldn't start even
after triple-clicking the home key. I have some questions.

First, is this VoiceOver loss situation common among all models of the
iPhone running IOS 6.01, or is it relatively rare and hard to reproduce?
Second, if it's fairly common, is Apple planning to do something about it?
Third, instead of doing the reset that I just described, would simply
powering down the phone and restarting it have been a better idea?
Lastly, I'd really like to check out the Escape the House game and wonder
if I should uninstall and reinstall it to resolve the issue of being
unceremoniously dumped out of the app when trying to get past the first
screen.

Thanks in advance.
