Hi Chris,
Just to clarify, I thought aeroplane mode means you cannot use any data at
all, either 3G or wireless. Are you saying that I can have aeroplane mode on
but still connect to wireless?

Hello Andrew,
I travel from time to time too and I also take my iPhone with me when I do.
I can assure you that you will not have any trouble. Only remember to turn
your airoplane mode on, on your iPhone five, so that it won't connect to
three G of American or British carriers and get charged an arm and a leg by
your Australian carrier after your return as roaming charges. You only need
to turn your wifi on after that and look for open wi fi connections, or
connect to your hotel or friends networks.

Hi all,

I am from Australia and

Later this year, I'm planning to travel to England and America. I am using
an iphone 5 running the latest version of IOS, and was just wondering about
any useful info I should know about taking and using the phone overseas.

I plan to take my old iphone 4 over and put a sim card in that to use for
phone calls etc, I prefer to keep the Australian sim right where it is in
the iphone 5, so it isn't lost and thought a spare old phone would be put to
good use.

I'm assuming if I take the iphone 5, I can connect it to a wireless network
and continue to use all my other apps, minus the phone of course? Since my
original sim is staying in I won't be able to use it over 3 G just wireless?

Thanks for any info you can give,

Hope you all have a blessed day,

Andrew

When you activate airplane mode, all radios are automatically turned off. You
can then individually activate both the Bluetooth and WIFI radios as you
choose. Turning airplane mode off again returns any radio to the on state that
was on when you activated airplane mode.

There is no trial period for at bat. When you open the app if you've a paid
subscribition, there is a gameday audio button near the top middle of your
screen, double tap it the list of games will open, double tap on the game you
want to listen to you're there, if you'd like to change to the other teams
feed or the spanish feeds if their are spanish feeds, flick right from the top
of the screen, the list of feeds will be above the volume slider the other
games below that.

  Hello,

This is what I do to listen to games:

  * Double tap on the scores tab at the bottom of the screen

  * On this screen, you can look at a list of scheduled games and the times
they will be played. For any game in progress, it will give the current score
and other information.

  * Also on this screen is a game audio button. Double tap this game audio
button to listen to a game.

  * After tapping the game audio button, on this screen will be a list of games
that are currently in progress, just double tap on the game you want to listen
too.

  * After double tapping on a game to listen too, it should automatically start
playing the game feed. Now if you left flick back toward the top of the
screen, you will find a volume picker to adjust the volume, and a stop button.
The stop button will of coarse stop the audio of the game. If you double tap
the stop button, then that button becomes the play button. So if something
happens and the audio stops, you would double tap this play button to restart
the audio of the game.

  I hope this is helpful.

2013-04-26 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Hi list,
I am using the latest version of Facebook on my Iphone 4.
I don't know how to read statuses in order properly.
When I want to read the statuses, Facebook displays only those posted by
contacts I have as my friends. I am not getting the statuses from the
groups and websites I like such as schools, institutions, TV shows ETC.

This did not occur in previous version which I do not have any more.
Please, does anyone know how to solve this issue?
Thank you for your help in advance.
Have a great weekend.

Hello Andrew,
Yes exactly. you can turn airoplane mode on and still connect to wireless.
Only remember to go to settings, and manually switch the wifi back on. When
you turn the airoplane mode on, it automatically turns off wireless with it,
that is why you have to go back to settings and turn the wi fi back on.

Automatically download purchased items not working

2013-04-26 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi All,

For some reason my phone is not automatically downloading items I have
purchased through iTunes. I've gone into settings and made sure that
option is turned on. I have even removed everything from the app
switcher then checked my music library again. But it seems like the
only way to get new purchases onto the phone is to do a sync.

Anyone have any ideas why this isn't working for me? Btw it has worked
in the past, but I haven't had success since my last upgrade of the
iOS.

Thanks,
Kimber

Hello and good morning. I've seen this happen before. If you are sure
that you have app syncing turned on from the Settings app, the next
thing I would try is signing out of your Apple ID on your phone, and
then signing back in. Perhaps that will work. But it's a guess at this
point.

This has to do with the headings bug mentioned in earlier messages. It's
 annoying as all get out.

You'll find it in other apps such as Safari when visiting webpages with lots
of headings. VO gets placed all over the place when trying to swipe through.
Oddly enough though, the NFB Newsline app seems to work fine.

I wrote Apple about this the other day and I actually got a response
particular to my message and not just the standard We appreciate your

They said that they were aware of the problem and were investigating it, but
could not say more beyond that. So basically we have to wait for a fix if at
all in the next iOS release.

 Subject: An oddity with contacts

Hello all. The following is a weird problem that one of my clients is
experiencing and I am not sure how to help them. This is all in the contacts
list. From what I can tell the contacts are in alphabetical order the way
the client wants them to be. They are set up to sort by last name, first
name. And display by first name, last name. This is all good. The problem is
if you are flicking to the right and you come across the letter C the next
contacts which are displayed all start with D. Then as you keep flicking to
the right and you eventually get to the letter E, the contacts after that
start with D. I set the rotor to headings and am experiencing weirdness
 there as well. As I flaked down I would hear things like a, B, H, E, F, P,
 H. So it is as if things are being misread. However if I hear a letter out
of turn, I touch the screen to see what is there and the correct contact for
the letter it is supposed to be is actually displayed. This is telling me
that voiceover is actually speaking different letters in the headings for
the categories but those letters are not correct. So in my example above the
G is missing. Yet if I stop on that missplaced the letter the contacts for G
are actually spoken. I have never seen this happen before and I am not sure
what to do to fix it. At first I thought the client might have been left
flicking instead of right flicking, but that's not the case.

When I open the Facebook app and swipe right multiple times I come to News

Double tapping on All Friends gives me only my friend's statuses and double

I agree turning to Apple for this step of the process and maybe other

In that case, your Apple ID is most likely no longer active. This is
the first time I have heard of such, so I am a little surprised.

To be certain, I would call Apple. In my experience, they are
extremely helpful. In the US, Apple's number is (800) 692-7753, or, as
they say, (800 my-apple).

Your Apple ID will most likely work if you remember both the ID and
password. Apple's system will
have you answer some security questions when you start using the ID
again, if the ID is still
active, in order to update it to current account standards. It will
probably also ask you to create
a new password following Apple'S current password requirements.

I think Ray should install iTunes on his computer then give ATT tech
support a phone call. This will prevent any negative feelings during
this
introductory stage of iPhone ownership. There are so many options

necessary to setup an iDevice that it can quickly get overwhelming and
incredibly frustrating.

You will not get service until an activated SIM card is installed. That
said, you will most likely need to activate the iPhone before you get
coverage, even if a SIM card is installed. The iPhone can either be
activated using a computer and iTunes, or during the set-up process
on the
phone. I do not know if you need Wifi for the activation process as
I have
always used iTunes, or had it activated at the carrier store. I find it
quicker and easier to use iTunes as I am also able to restore my
back-up on
to the new iPhone at the same time. Besides, the process is much
quicker on
the computer compared with using iCloud on the iPhone for restoration.

using speaker with 3.5 jack

2013-04-26 Thread Traci
Hey all,

I have a question about using a bluetooth speaker with a 3.5 audio jack. I
have the hmdx jam jar speaker, which I love! If I remember correctly, it is 4
hours battery life via bluetooth and 12 hours via the 3.5 jack. Well, I have
been mostly using it via the audio cable and I sware it has been way beyond 12
hours.

Does it eventually draw any power from my iDevice? I'm baffled here, I've used
it on bluetooth for a short while, but for the last couple weeks, I've used it
exclusively via the cord.

What do you think is up? I haven't charged the thing once.

Lol, not complaining, but the tech girl in me is curious.

I have not done so well with this app, mostly because the letters never

to supply answers, it isn't so much that I don't know the words, I generally
can figure them out. Still, today I was supposed to figure out an

after all it was his question but now I am on the bad girls' list for not
being bothered while I was doing something else. Go figure, I introduced

I believe I stated in my email that pocket weather is broken for me, or maybe I
forgot to add that bit of info. :) It doesn't' work anymore. I use weather
radio for alerts as well. No, pocket weather does not do alerts, it's a very
very basic weather app, that no longer works in my area on my iPhone.

RE: Lost my Bluetooth your phone

You know, we ordered two sets of the Aftersoz a couple of weeks ago, one for
me and one for my husband and they discounted both of them, that to me was
way cool.

For a single ear piece, I would recommend the Blueant Q3. It is not cheap,
at $99.
For a stereo bluetooth headset, I would recommend the Aftershokz Bluez bone
conduction headphones. The list price is $119, but serotek is offering a 40%
discount promo. When ordering from the www.aftershokz.com site, enter the
promo code SPN40 for the 40% discount, which brings the price down to about
$75.

Hi,
Well it seems my jawbone era Bluetooth airphone has sprouted legs. I can't
find it anywhere. So, any good recommendations? For an earphone or headset?
Thanks.

I have not done so well with this app, mostly because the letters never
appear in the same order and I just don't take the time to hunt for them, I
am still in four-letter words. My husband bought all the sets of clues
after completing the first round and he plays often, but he tends to want me
to supply answers, it isn't so much that I don't know the words, I generally
can figure them out. Still, today I was supposed to figure out an
Australian slang for sheep, seven-letters. I was busy and never tried,
after all it was his question but now I am on the bad girls' list for not
being bothered while I was doing something else. Go figure, I introduced
him to the game, so now I am expected to know all the answers.

The synonyms game someone put up was just too easy, I'd get 2000 to 3000

For Ray and others who are very new to iPhone or iPod Touch 5th gen,

If you are trying to turn off your iPhone simply press the single power
button at the top right-hand side. Pressing this power button again turns it
 back on.

If the iPhone is off and you press the power button at top to turn it on, or
if you press the home button on the face of the iPhone to turn it on, you
can repeatedly single-finger swipe right until you hear Slide to unlock.
At this point use a single finger to double tap on this item to open your
homepage. (Don't forget that you can repeatedly single finger swipe back to
the left if you don't find Slide to unlock.) After the single finger
double tap on Slide to unlock you will be on the desktop of your iPhone.
 (Smile).
Note: Tom Lang? posted a great tip. He suggested that once you press the
power to turn on your iPhone/iPod touch, you can press the bottom left hand
corner of the screen to quickly find Slide to unlock. Now double tap
anywhere on your screen and you are at your HOmepage.

This is how your iPhone's homepage is probably laid out (There are 3
sections): Status bar at the top, 4 bybled grid of app icons, and dock.

 Status bar:
Activate the status bar by pressing your finger at the top 1/4 inch of
screen. You can now swipe from right to left and vice versa. This section
tells you such things as WIFI signal connection status, time, battery power
etc. To access a different part of the screen simply tap the center of your
 iPod or iPhone.

 Apps:
If you tap on the area of the screen below the Status bar you will be
focused on all your apps. You can swipe to the right to move through all
your apps. You will hear a tone when you move from app to app. You will hear
a very different tone when you move from row to row of icons. There will be
4 app icons per row and a total of 4 rows of icons. You can double tap an
icon to open the app. To return to the homepage simply press once the round
Home button at the bottom of the iPhone or iPod Touch.

 Dock:
The third section of your iPhone homepage screen will be contained within
the bottom row of icons. This dock will hold only 4 items. This is analogous
to your Windows7's Taskbar. You can quickly launch any app pinned to this
dock. I have placed The apps store in dock position 1 and the calendar on
dock position 4. This makes checking for app updates very quickly as I need
only tap the bottom left hand corner of screen to determine if there are any
app updates waiting for me. Determining today's date is also very easy as I
need only tap the bottom right hand corner of the screen to have the date
 spoken to me.

The gesture you will probably use most is the left swipe and right swipe
which helps you navigate through each screen and various iPhone settings.
Think of it as pressing tab and shift tab on a Windows machine.

Let me know if you need any clarification or amplification of information.

RE: An oddity with contacts

2013-04-26 Thread Rose Combs
Transcription even for a fast typist is time-consuming. Dialog in fact is
probably the most difficult especially if you don't know who is speaking.
Then you have the laughter, or the I am thinking sounds people make and
you have to decide if it detracts from the transcript if you don't put that
in. Verbatim transcription with no attempt at phrasing something so it can
be better understood is something most people are offended with but, I have
done medical transcription for 36 years and until the past two years we have
been expected to clean it up without changing the meaning. Then someone
said type verbatim, even if it is incorrect, but then there are exceptions
to that rule also according to the quality assurance folks so it is a whole
mess of stuff you have to consider.

I know when I transcribe a couple of meetings for folks and did not know who
was speaking it was frustrating, especially in one case when someone was
very unhappy and very verbal and I could not put a name to that person.

I tried transcribing a bookshare meeting off Access World about six years
ago, the recording was just over an hour and it took me 6 hours to
transcribe and it was something like 25 pages as I recall. That is from
someone who types fast.

And here we have some of the problems. Advertisers are constantly seeking
visual methods to draw the eye of people away from the main content of the
page over to their advertisements. Web authors are trying to keep the
person's eyes on the page material, yet allowing the ads to help cover the
costs of the page and maybe make a profit. Designs and techniques are
constantly changing, so it is impossible for automatic systems to keep up
with the ever-changing variability.

The standard screen reader response is to somehow script specific complex
webpages (Jaws) or flag and otherwise mark-up aspects of webpages. Aria is a
system that web developers can use which has been accepted by the screen
readers. However, most web developers will probably never use it any more
than they have ever used accessibility techniques in the past. We are a tiny
minority, so most never think our accessibility needs. Though I would love
to see it be otherwise, I am a realist. We are way beneath the average
web-developer's notice, so it will most likely always be an uphill battle.

Consider it this way. How many of you who make podcasts create written
transcriptions of your podcast for the deaf? I have seen very few. You
probably never thought of the fact that you are discriminating against the
deaf exactly the same way with your podcast that sighted people are
discriminating against you with inaccessible web pages. Oh, and if your
podcast were for certain governmental information websites, you would be
required to make the podcast information accessible to everyone, including
those who are deaf. In other words, you would need to sit down and
transcribe everything that is said in the podcast, and place it alongside
the podcast so the deaf can have equal access. For me, at least, it takes
several hours to transcribe a half hour interview. I am a slow typist.

sighted users. I did this even more frequently when JAWS allowed for
alternate web page presentations, and I started using a screen reader like
Orca which doesn't change the lay out of the page much at all. I don't
recall how much NVDA manipulates the presentation of the web. It would be
interesting to know the results of these studies with blind people who
predominantly use Orca instead of JAWS.

I do think it'll always take the blind a bit longer to digest information
on a web page than it will for sighted users. Just as I can't take in a list
of email messages at a glance, focusing in on the unread messages based on
colors, or automatically jump to the interesting part of a spread sheet, I'm
not going to be able to follow the visual queues on a web page directing the
sighted user to the pertinent portion of the web page. Ironically, I think
screen reader technology is going to have to help fill in the gap here,
which may focus more on the type of content on a web page and less on the
visual layout.

and the other is called Celsius. Depending on which measurement of

is shown as a badge icon on your home screen. If you want to see detailed

 Hi all.

My brother has got a standscan pro, and that is the new model. I will say,
that there has been some great improvements. The cardboard is thicker, it
 is
easier to get the cable to come out, and the standscan pro is much more
sturdy. I would say that it is some good improvements, often products can
 be
long on their ways with improvements, that does not seem the case with
standscan pro. I would love something that could hold the phone in the
 right
place. I helped my brother today, I could see that some sort of tactile
frame or something would help to get the phone placed correct. I think I
will try to find some material of which I could make an angle, so that one
corner of the phone should be placed in that angle.

 Cheers Annie.

RE: I have seen the improved standscan pro today.

2013-04-26 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi John,

Maybe you should explain because I fail to understand how they could have
predicted where the edges of your phone would end up. Many different size
phones so you can't predict what phone your client is going to use. This
box was not designed for only one smart phone but all of them. the hole has
to be in the right place to be able to cover the whole area of the bottom of
the box and you have no way of knowing where the edge of each phone will be.
Seeing that this box was not designed for blind people anyway, all you have
to do is line up your camera once and put a pencil mark all around the
phone. That would work, but certainly not for us so all we have to do is
find a tactile way of doing the same thing.
I will agree with you that this device hit the market well before it should
have. A lot more thought and analyzing should have been done to come out
with the right thing the first time. The idea is fantastic but the
materials used are by far inadequate. Far more quality could have been put
in for not too much more money. One thing I am happy with is that we had a
chance to give the developer a lot of hints as to how he could make it
better and he is doing that. I just hope he doesn't need two or three more
tries before he gets it right. I understand that we are in a throwaway
society but we shouldn't have to throw away something so soon. If I have to
buy a second one, I would have been better paying twice the price and still
been better off because I would at least have saved the second shipping.

When ordering from the www.aftershokz.com site, enter the
promo code SPN40 for the 40% discount, which brings the price down to about
 $75.

 Hello Andrew,

 Andrew

Hi Paul,

I'm rather addicted to this game at the moment and it is working perfectly. I
only use Yatze and Farkle .

I use a 4 s with the most recent update.

If you want to try playing agains me to see what happens my user name is VTEric.

I can't think of what else you could do other then deleting and reinstalling
the app.

Oh, one other thing. I'm using the no advertisement version. this is the .99
cent upgrade.

Re: Lost my Bluetooth your phone

2013-04-26 Thread Andy Baracco
Their strength is that you can hear both the audio from the headphones and
the ambient noise around you, so you can hear your GPS for example, and
still hear traffic sounds, etc. Music quality is acceptable, but if you want
a headset primarily for music, you can do better elsewhere.

For a single ear piece, I would recommend the Blueant Q3. It is not cheap,
at $99.
For a stereo bluetooth headset, I would recommend the Aftershokz Bluez
bone
conduction headphones. The list price is $119, but serotek is offering a
40%

discount promo. When ordering from the www.aftershokz.com site, enter the
promo code SPN40 for the 40% discount, which brings the price down to
about

$75.

appear in the same order and I just don't take the time to hunt for them, I
am still in four-letter words.

The synonyms game someone put up was just too easy, I'd get 2000 to 3000
points in one sitting.
