Re: Bump App

2013-07-09 Thread Shameless FanGirl
I have it, I tried it some time ago, but couldn't get a lot out of the app.
Tried it both with another VO user, as well as a sighted friend with the same
zero result, so I too am curious as to whether or not anyone else has gotten
this to work.

The best part is, it is available for both Android iPhone. An Android can

Thanks for the information on their email list thanks for adding me to your

the wind rain sincors as well as the current indoor outdoor sincers. I was
under the impression that the current system as it were now cost 180 US dollars
currently includes 1 indoor one outdoor sincer. I'll go check their website

  Hi Sean Paul,

I think I'll make a little distribution list in Outlook with people I know
have the weather station or are interested and that way I can easily post to
the group as well as to that group of people which means it is less likely to
miss one of my posts. In any case, I will definitely let the list know when the
additional sensors become available although even now as it is the Weather
Station is very good, support for the additional indoor modules will most
likely not take long and I guess one advantage of buying a station with just an
extra indoor module is that you don't have to come up with all the money at
once, it's not a cheap accessory. On the other hand you can also spend several
hundreds of Dollars on a really good wireless weather station which only has
the outdoor sensors and an indoor station with a LCD screen which of course
isn't accessible and also is not accessible for a sighted person unless they
are standing in front of it.

I think Netatmo has a good thing going and as far as I know nobody else has
yet come out with a competitive product.

If anybody wants direct news about this let me know and I'll put you in my
Netatmo email list. You can, of course, also sign up to receive a newsletter
from Netatmo directly by going to the following link:

Subject: Netatmo update regarding additional indoor modules

Hello Netatmo users,

I just wanted to send a brief update for those who bought a Netatmo Weater
Station.

If you read my last message you are aware of the fact that Netatmo is now
offering additional indoor modules for $79. I received one of these which I put
in my basement after pairing it with my station. The pairing process was easy,
fully accessible and I am including a detailed step-by-step description at the
end of the message since this will only be of interest for those who have a
station and are planning to buy an extra module or modules.

I would like to point out that for the next couple of weeks the additional
module will not be of much use to a Voiceover user since the measurements it
provides are not yet accessible with Voiceover. I just received a message from
Netatmo's head developer, Carlos, and he said he will work on this and send me
a Beta version to check out what he has done shortly. If my past experience is
an indicator I would expect he will do this quite quickly and I will let
everybody know, of course after I give him my feedback he still has to release
an official update with those changes.

Neil had asuggested that it would be good if the Weather Station could
include pollen count and Carlos told me that this is something they will be
looking at further on down the road. I believe this year they are busy with
getting 2 more sensors released, a rain sensor and a wind speed sensor. Once
these 2 add-ons are available the Netatmo Weather Station will be as good as
just about anything that is out there but of course its other features like
being able to check the readings from anywhere in the world via the app make it
even better.

OK, here now the description/instruction regarding the pairing process:

Double tap on the Menu button at the top left, it becomes a Settings
button, double tap on that.

It will take a moment for the Settings menu to load since I believe it
accesses information online.

Now double tap on My Stations.

Double tap on Add/Remove a Module

On the screen that appears you will see a heading called Setup at the top
and a Next button to the right, double tap on that.

Blind Square VS. My way classic?

2013-07-09 Thread Fred Olver
Has anyone compared these two applications for proximity purposes? If so, how
did they compare? Was one better than the other? Can they both or either one be
used for walking? I attempted to find My Way classic in the American app store
and no luck, someone have the correct spelling?
Any information would be most useful as I am contemplating purchasing one of
these two.
Thank you very much.

Hi Fred,

MyWay Light and MyWay Classic are more designed to record user routes and

MyWay is written without a space, but if you search for My Way Classic and

finish typing. There will be no result in the list underneath the search

The non-free version of MyWay also allows file exchange via the iTunes
filesharing option.

There, you can also import files containing nodes in Open Street Map format

 Hello, everyone.

I am very fond of the Lire RSS news reader, but because of Feeddler's high
ratings, I decided to give Feeddler a try. Unlike Lire, I needed an RSS
reader account to access feeds via Feedler, and I chose The Old Reader. It
appears to be working well, but I'm wondering if anyone sees advantages to

Using BlindSquare, was: Blind Square VS. My way classic?

2013-07-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fred,

I have not yet purchased the Seeing Eye subscription, but I trust Sendero to
deliver the most complete solution for a blind GPS user even if they may
experience a few growing pains like the recent server outage etc. There are
probably also features we all would like to have and which may take a while
to be added. However, besides the Seeing Eye app and a less expensive
one-time purchase app, BlindSquare is in my opinion the best app and
superior to Ariadne and Sendero's LookAround.

I only bought BlindSquare maybe a couple of months ago, but I find the way
it announces cross streets the best and you can very easily set user defined
points which are announced as you approach them. I definitely think you have
to set the distance fairly short as far as the app announcing POI's
otherwise it constantly starts talking and telling you all the stuff it
finds, for me I find 60 metres which is the second shortest setting works
well, I guess if you have it set to feet that would be just under 200 feet,
there is only one lesser distance which is 26 metres or approx. 85 feet.

Any time you create a user defined point you can tell the app to announce it
when you come within a certain distance and that distance you can actually
enter manually, so for example if you set a bus stop bench as a point you
could tell it to announce it at a distance of 20 feet. In many cases I know
I am approaching the bus stop and I only want the announcement which
includes the direction when I am very close.

Keep in mind that for the directions to work, e.g. Bus Stop 20 feet at 11
o'clock you have to point the phone straight ahead into the direction you
are walking. I have a case with a belt clip and I can swivel that belt clip.
If the phone is on your belt and points straight up and down the compass
directions will not work, you have to either hold the phone and point it
straight ahead or you have to be able to turn the belt clip so the phone is
basically in landscape mode on your hip with the top of the phone where the
headphone jack is pointing forward. Then you still have to make sure you
position the belt clip so it's straight on the outermost point of your hip,
if you have it forward or back to far towards your belly or back it will
point off at a slight angle, i.e. instead of pointing towards 12 o'clock
straight ahead it may point to 11 o'clock or 1 o'clock and this will mean
the announcements will not be as good as they can be. I think having such a
belt clip with a swivel is the way to get the most out of BlindSquare since
I certainly don't want to hold my phone all the time.

Sieghard

Well, let me tell you what I want to happen. I see that this app works with
four square which is an app which tells you which restaurants and other items
are in close proximity. I want to be able to venture out on my own to a part of
the city I have not been too and find places to eat, etc. I believe I will be
able to do this with this app, Blind Square in tandem with other apps. I
believe the description says it works with Apple Maps and Google maps, and in
the description it is said that it works with four square, should prove to be

is pointing forward. Then you still have to make sure you position the belt
clip so it's straight on the outermost point of your hip, if you have it
forward or back to far towards your belly or back it will point off at a slight
angle, i.e. instead of pointing towards 12 o'clock straight ahead it may point
to 11 o'clock or 1 o'clock and this will mean the announcements will not be as
good as they can be. I think having such a belt clip with a swivel is the way
to get the most out of BlindSquare since I certainly don't want to hold my
phone all the time.

Hi Fred,

MyWay Light and MyWay Classic are more designed to record user routes and
then to be used to follow these routes from point to point. The app does not
use map data like BlindSquare and will not tell you street names, cross streets
etc.

MyWay is written without a space, but if you search for My Way Classic
and write it in 3 words, it will find the app as the only search result, but
you have to double tap on Search at the bottom right of the keyboard after
you finish typing. There will be no result in the list underneath the search

step, tap enter and then check the results in the picker box. Anyhow, here is

Re: Features of Lire and Feeddler RSS News Readers

2013-07-09 Thread Geoff Stephens
This is a bit of a late reply. However, for those wanting to know, one of the
key differences in the way Feeddler and Lire work is with regard to caching.
Lire caches full text of RSS articles. Feeddler does not.

I have moved back to primarily using Feeddler because of its integration with
web-based services such as TheOldreader. I am not completely satisfied with
the way Feeddler works with Theoldreader, but I do prefer the ability to access
my feeds from a browser.

I became extremely unhappy with the way Lire was working on my iPhone 5. It
was extremely sluggish when updating and caching to the point where it was
unusable. Even after articles were cached, it would sometimes take 30 seconds
or so to open a folder/article. However, after following a tip posted by
someone here, I removed and reinstalled Lire and most of that sluggishness has
been corrected!

I really love the way Lire works with VoiceOver. I also love the way Feeddler
works with agregators. And Feeddler is not too bad with VoiceOver either.

I will probably continue to be slightly undecided.

My Way light, what I was doing wrong!

2013-07-09 Thread Sandratomkins
hi all,

A week or so ago, I wrote to say that the App My Way light wasn't working
for me. All my compass readings were, near enough, diametrically wrong. I
couldn't understand why this should be when, for others, it seems to work.
Well, I think i have it! My case, which has a flap that folds over to protect
the phone's face, is magnetised. I just tried the same experiment with
Favourites around my house, but this time, with a nude phone, and it worked!

So, i like my case and will stick with it, but for using My Way, I shall
just have to take it out.

i suggest that anyone who is having problems with this, or any app wich
gives compass directions and is using a magnetised case, should consider
removing the phone and trying again.

hTH Sandy.

2013-07-09 Thread Jonathan Mosen
I keep coming back to Feeddler. I try other options and nothing works as well
for me. Here's another interesting scenario I've been playing with lately.

One of the things that I like about Feeddler is that it parses its articles
through the Instapaper API. What this means is that when you open an article, a
lot of the clutter you see on web pages is simply eliminated, making it easy to
get to the message body. However, I frequent a forum for IT professionals here
in New Zealand, and the Instapaper API was stripping some of the important
links to participate in the forum. With Feeddler, you can force specific feeds
not to parse content through the Instapaper API and just open them with the
Safari engine. It really is an awesome app.

RE: Features of Lire and Feeddler RSS News Readers

2013-07-09 Thread Cristóbal
Yes, being able to have articles open as full text is really helpful. There
are some instances too where with certain feeds, the entry won’t open
properly, but then I can just switch to the rss rendering or just have it
open in safari. Again, nice options to have. Synchronization can be sluggish
when marking articles as read, but it’s a minor inconvenience and the fact
that one can switch between the app and browser are a big plus for Feeddler
and the Old Reader.

I would also point out that using the 2 gig plan from ATT, a second 2 GB
should you go over the first is only 15 bucks more. That having been said, you
could also drop your home internet access and use your iPhone account for
phone, texting, and data and that would include email.

  Hi.

The following is a combination of a request and an observation. It's not
intended as a complaint. It's just to demonstrate that what's not too
expensive for some can be quite expensive in other cases.

My request to Sendero is to have the GPS information stored on the iDevice.
Earlier this year I canceled my data plan for my iPhone to save money. I pay
$25 for three months of phone service. If I were to reaquire a data plan, my
only reason for doing so would be to use the Seeing Eye app. For most of you,
who already have a data plan, you would be spending just for the cost of the
app, and your data plan can be used for other purposes. In my case, however,
the app would cost me something like $700, because I'd have to purchase a 2
year contract from ATT, plus the cost of a minimum of a year for the app, and
if I decide I don't want the app after the first year, I'm stuck with an extra
year of data that I probably wouldn't have gotten in the first place.

That's my take on things. Again, I'm not complaining, I'm just throwing
another thought on things. I probably won't be purchasing the app for a while,
but I probably will get it, as well as the 2 gig a month data plan. I can find
other uses for the data besides GPS, so it will be worth it for me.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

  GO REDS!

RE: Using BlindSquare, was: Blind Square VS. My way classic?

2013-07-09 Thread Louise Redsull
Hi Sieghard,

I agree with you about blindsquare. I'm finding this app to be fantastic and
I like the way it announces tings. I've heard a rumour the developer is
looking at more detailed announcement of intersections. If this happens
it'll have pretty much everything I need in it. Ok it's not got it's own
turn by turn but it links with other apps which have this adn I've found
this to work fine.

I was wondering where you might get belt clips from and how much they can
be. I am in the UK but if anyone knows of any good models that'd be great.
I'm starting to use GPS more and more and want to get the best I can out of
it and know you can't always do this when your phone is in a pocket. I'm
also using bone conducting headphones which work really well for hearing
announcements and traffic.

Louise.

Subject: Using BlindSquare, was: Blind Square VS. My way classic?

Sieghard

Hi Fred,

MyWay Light and MyWay Classic are more designed to record user routes and
then to be used to follow these routes from point to point. The app does not
use map data like BlindSquare and will not tell you street names, cross
streets etc.

MyWay is written without a space, but if you search for My Way Classic and
write it in 3 words, it will find the app as the only search result, but you
have to double tap on Search at the bottom right of the keyboard after you
finish typing. There will be no result in the list underneath the search

I have had decent results with this with blind square as previously

But when I do this, I increase the distance blind square is looking, plus
turn off all announcements except streets. This cuts down on extra chatter,
and allows blind square to keep up better.

Hi, blind square does a fairly good job at announcing intersections.
However it will miss some due to the speed at which you travel in while
riding in a vehicle. Ariadne is excellent for announcing the address ranges
as you move, but not as much with intersections, although it has a very nice
explore feature which helps somewhat.

 you cross.

Apple maps on my Iphone 4s can plan a route, but that's about it.

 Any advice/suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Installing the newest iOS 7 beta

2013-07-09 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, it's my understanding that if you are a beta tester or developer,
you should already know how to do this. Also, since you are under NDA,
it seems that discussing the iOS 7 beta itself might be breaking that
NDA. I know you didn't give specifics of the content of the beta itself,
so my comment is mainly pointing out that if a person has a dev account,
one would assume he/she can install betas on their devices.

Moderator message: friendly reminder about thank you, me too, or other useless one liner messages

2013-07-09 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hey all. Lately the one liner messages have started picking up on list.
This is just a friendly reminder that sending one liner messages like,
thanks, or me too should not be sent to the list. Yes, most of us were
taught to say please and thank you when we want to act civil, but
sending it out to the list when there are more than 1400 members is rude
in this case. Especially because in most cases, the thank you is really
meant for only one person. So, if you want to show gratitude, do it by
sending that thank you message directly to the person in question. If
you don't know how to write them privately, usually pressing
reply-to-all will put both the viphone and the person's email address in
the to field. You can then remove the viphone address, and send off that
thank you and it will only go to the person and not to the whole list.

Also, if you write a message simply agreeing with someone, or saying
something like me too, or something equally useless, please consider if
what you are saying is really adding to the conversation. In most cases,
saying something like me too or I agree, or similar is not adding to the
discussion. There are always exceptions to the one liner rule as with
everything in life. For example, sometimes you may be answering a
question that someone asked, and the answer is simply yes or no. And
there is nothing else to add to it. So, it's not that one liner messages
are bad, but the useless one liner messages are.

I hate being the bad guy, but I will put people on moderation if they
are found to be sending out thank you or useless one liner messages. I
won't just change your subscription, instead I will write you, copy Cara
Quinn, and respond to the one liner message you sent to show you which
one I'm referring to.

Thanks all, and if you have questions about this, please email me privately.

Re: response received about weather bug

2013-07-09 Thread Alan Paganelli
Yes, the old run around trick! Thanks though for sharing their response. They
might actually do it but not until their next update and no guarantee that they
fix that and something else that use to work no longer does. That's what
happens when developers want their app to be all things to all people rather
then to make an app and let the user select which features they want active at
any given time. Maybe a little harder to do but it makes for a more useful app.

Mobile Data tip to all

2013-07-09 Thread Chris H
To all who are on a limited data plan like me, please check out the
mobile data section under Settings, General. Towards the end, under use
mobile data for, you can turn on or off certain features, like iCloud

restricted to wifi, therefore preventing you from going over your data
plan without realization because one or more services are allowed
connectivity over mobile data. For those living in the states substitute
mobile data with cellular data.

Thanks and hope this helps.

Hi Jim;

The volume control is directly above the physical home button.

Do a double tap and hold.

However; instead of sliding up and down, you slide your finger from left to
right, left lowers the volume and right raises the volume.

When you remove your finger you need to remove it very very slowly.

Hope this helps.

In other words, when you are in the task switcher, and you want to turn an app

Moderator message: changed list footer text

2013-07-09 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi all. This is just a heads up that I've changed the footer text which
displays at the end of each message to the list. Assuming that I've been
able to manage my way around the clunky Google Groups page without
unknown errors, you should see the updated text at the end of this
message. I'm hoping that it will give everyone the necessary information
if they need additional stuff about the list.

I hate having long signatures at the end of lists, but hey, it's life
unfortunately. smile.

To all who are on a limited data plan like me, please check out the
mobile data section under Settings, General. Towards the end, under use
mobile data for, you can turn on or off certain features, like iCloud
documents, iTunes, etc. Turning this off means these services will be
restricted to wifi, therefore preventing you from going over your data
plan without realization because one or more services are allowed
connectivity over mobile data. For those living in the states substitute
mobile data with cellular data.
Thanks and hope this helps.

Re: Features of Lire and Feeddler RSS News Readers

2013-07-09 Thread Craig Werner
Geoff, you're right: the caching of articles by Lire can be very slow indeed.

I haven't used Feeddler's Download for offline reading option. Is
this perhaps some kind of article cache?

Craig

On 7/9/13, Geoff Stephens geoffsli...@gmail.com wrote:
This is a bit of a late reply. However, for those wanting to know, one of
the key differences in the way Feeddler and Lire work is with regard to
caching. Lire caches full text of RSS articles. Feeddler does not.

I have moved back to primarily using Feeddler because of its integration
with web-based services such as TheOldreader. I am not completely satisfied
with the way Feeddler works with Theoldreader, but I do prefer the ability
to access my feeds from a browser.

I became extremely unhappy with the way Lire was working on my iPhone 5. It
was extremely sluggish when updating and caching to the point where it was
unusable. Even after articles were cached, it would sometimes take 30
seconds or so to open a folder/article. However, after following a tip
posted by someone here, I removed and reinstalled Lire and most of that
 sluggishness has been corrected!

I really love the way Lire works with VoiceOver. I also love the way
Feeddler works with agregators. And Feeddler is not too bad with VoiceOver
 either.

I will probably continue to be slightly undecided.

Hello, Jonathan, and thank you for writing.

I too have noticed that it can take a while for multiple feeds to be

most time; the refreshing happens pretty quickly for me. I realize
that the characterization of pretty quickly is relative and
subjective. Would you say that the refresh and cache operations are
 considerably faster with Feeddler?

 Thank you for your help.

Hi Craig, I agree. The developer of the Lire app is incredible, and what
 you
hear with VoiceOver can be customised in great detail.

There are two reasons why I continue to use Feeddler primarily.

First, I find Lire takes a very long time to retrieve new content, and I
have a large number of feeds.

Second, Feeddler syncs with a bunch of cloud-based services. It formerly
used Google Reader, and I had apps on my Mac and PC that would also sync
with it. So if I read an article on one device, it would be marked as
 read
on all of them. I've not yet found apps for Mac and Windows that support
 any
of the new services Feeddler is supporting, but things are still shaking
down after the Google Reader shut-down so I'm sure that will all sort
 itself
 out in time.

I am wondering how Feeddler compares with Lire in terms of features.
I'm very pleased wit Lire, but being new to the world of iOS RSS

I heartily recommend Lire. Its developer, Kunal Sood, is very
responsive to the needs of VoiceOver users. I don't know of a single
function that isn't accessible on this ap.

Re: accessible mobile hot spot

2013-07-09 Thread Dan Beaver
Hi,

I have used the Sprint hotspot. It works well and is setup using a webpage
that is imbedded in the device. It seems accessible in most aspects.

I am now using Verizon's hotspot. It too is setup via a imbedded webpage.
It seems to be accessible just like the Sprint device.

I like both except that the Sprint hotspot had a repeating problem with the
battery. Sprint refused to admit that they had a design issue. I got tired
of buying battery after battery.

My wife and I have used both hotspots while traveling and in areas where the
cell signal is sufficient it is great accessing the internet while driving
down the highways.

RE: hand break?

2013-07-09 Thread Kliphton
I thought it was.
1. Most people use hand break to put things on their IOS devices.
2. Removing inscription isn't against the law, removing it and selling it
is. An article I read states if you buy the DVD, and add it to your
collection by removing inscription, and never reselling it, then no laws are
being broken. Of course this is a matter of opinion. But I will ask my
question elsewhere since some are touchy about it here.

RE: Features of Lire and Feeddler RSS News Readers

The caching definitely does slow things down, especially if you have a lot

Geoff, you're right: the caching of articles by Lire can be very slow
indeed.

I haven't used Feeddler's Download for offline reading option. Is
this perhaps some kind of article cache?

This is a bit of a late reply. However, for those wanting to know, one of
the key differences in the way Feeddler and Lire work is with regard to
caching. Lire caches full text of RSS articles. Feeddler does not.

I have moved back to primarily using Feeddler because of its integration
with web-based services such as TheOldreader. I am not completely
satisfied
with the way Feeddler works with Theoldreader, but I do prefer the ability
to access my feeds from a browser.

And Feeddler is not too bad with
VoiceOver
 either.

I will probably continue to be slightly undecided.

that the characterization of pretty quickly is relative and

I've not yet found apps for Mac and Windows that support
 any
of the new services Feeddler is supporting, but things are still shaking
down after the Google Reader shut-down so I'm sure that will all sort
 itself
 out in time.

responsive to the needs of VoiceOver users. I don't know of a single

Do you mean the app switcher? I am still a little new and don't know
about a task switcher. I would guess it would be the same proceedure
as in the app switcher and that is do a tap, tap, and when your finger
goes down a third time you just keep it on the screen until it says
deleting or editing and the name of the app. Then you double tap
again. Do that until all the apps you want closed are closed and then
double tap on the close app switcher button and you are done.

Hope that helps,

Additional keyboard shortcuts [was Re: keyboard]

2013-07-09 Thread Esther
Hi Alan,

I have a few quick comments and additions to your list of keyboard shortcuts.
Cmd plus Tab to Switch to the next app or Cmd plus Shift plus Tab to Switch to
the previous app doesn't work in either iOS 6 or iOS 5 -- these commands
worked for a while in iOS 4, and apparently in the iOS 5 beta releases to move
between apps while you were in the App Switcher window. The commands are still
listed in the aXs Lab page of iOS 5 shortcuts, but they won't work as keyboard
shortcuts unless someone is still running iOS 4. I would just delete these or
include an annotation that this shortcut was only in iOS 4.

To get to the notification center using keyboard shortcuts, press Control
option m (or VO plus m) to move to the status bar, then press Option plus up
arrow to open the Notification Center. (This is the equivalent of tapping the
status menu bar and then doing a three finger swipe down with gestures.) You
can navigate to a specific item with Control option f (or VO plus f) to type in
a few letters to search for a matching entry, and then press Enter to go there.
To dismiss the notification center and return to your previous screen, press
the escape key. On keyboards without an escape key, which included some of the
iPad keyboards, use Control plus down arrow to move to Dismiss notification
center at the bottom of the screen, and then either use Control option space
(or VO space), or simultaneously press the up and down arrow keys (from
QuickNav mode) to activate the dismissal. (This question of getting to
notifications by keyboard shortcuts was answered several months ago on the
mac-access list, but I don't remember whether I answered it on this list.)

I'll remind people that using Control option h (or VO plus h) from the home
screen takes you to the Spotlight search field (VoiceOver says search
iPhone), where you can type in a few letters from the name of an app, or a
contact, or a section of mail, as an easy way to navigate to that item by
finding the item you want in the list of matches and using VO plus space to go
there. The spotlight search is more likely used from a keyboard. You could
modify the entry for VO plus H Go to home screen to add Go to spotlight search
if at home screen.

Finally, an alternative way to get into keyboard help mode on keyboards without
a Control or Option key to press Control option k, is to navigate by gestures
or by a mixture of gestures and typing to Settings General Accessibility
VoiceOver; double tap or select VoiceOver with your keyboard, then navigate
to VoiceOver Practice, and double tap or select with your keyboard. On the
VoiceOver Practice screen, flick right past the Done button in the top
right corner. If your keyboard is paired, and you have navigated to the
VoiceOver practice gestures area (either with your keyboard or by gestures),
your keyboard will behave exactly as though you had pressed Control option k
(or VO plus k). This is useful if you have a mini-keyboard without Control or
Option keys, but where you want to explore the key layout, and also will use
the arrow keys to navigate a restricted set of commands in QuickNav mode. You
can exit this keyboard help mode if you double tap the Done button in the top
right corner of the screen (with gestures). You can also exit this mode by
pressing the escape key, if there is one on your keyboard.

HTH. There are a few more tricks like using VO shift m to move apps onto each
other to create folders on your home screen, but they only work in a limited
way at the present time, and if you make a mistake you'll need to toggle
VoiceOver off and on again to reset the action of VO shift m.

Cheers,

Esther

I am not completely satisfied
with the way Feeddler works with Theoldreader, but I do prefer the ability to
access my feeds from a browser.

I became extremely unhappy with the way Lire was working on my iPhone 5.
It was extremely sluggish when updating and caching to the point where it was
unusable. Even after articles were cached, it would sometimes take 30 seconds
or so to open a folder/article. However, after following a tip posted by
someone here, I removed and reinstalled Lire and most of that sluggishness has
been corrected!

I really love the way Lire works with VoiceOver. I also love the way
Feeddler works with agregators. And Feeddler is not too bad with VoiceOver
either.

I will probably continue to be slightly undecided.

Re: Features of Lire and Feeddler RSS News Readers

What do you mean?

Nothing bad would happen, i.e. they wouldn't interfere with each other,
If you're following the same feed with both apps though, articles you
read with one app would still show up in the other as unread.

I keep coming back to Feeddler. I try other options and nothing
works as well for me. Here's another interesting scenario I've been
playing with lately.

One of the things that I like about Feeddler is that it parses its
articles through the Instapaper API. What this means is that when
you open an article, a lot of the clutter you see on web pages is
simply eliminated, making it easy to get to the message body.
However, I frequent a forum for IT professionals here in New
Zealand, and the Instapaper API was stripping some of the important
links to participate in the forum. With Feeddler, you can force
specific feeds not to parse content through the Instapaper API and
just open them with the Safari engine. It really is an awesome app.

 Feeddler does not.

I have moved back to primarily using Feeddler because of its
integration with web-based services such as TheOldreader. I am
not completely satisfied with the way Feeddler works with
Theoldreader, but I do prefer the ability to access my feeds from
a browser.

I became extremely unhappy with the way Lire was working on my
iPhone 5. It was extremely sluggish when updating and caching to
the point where it was unusable. Even after articles were cached,
it would sometimes take 30 seconds or so to open a folder/article.
However, after following a tip posted by someone here, I removed
and reinstalled Lire and most of that sluggishness has been corrected!

I really love the way Lire works with VoiceOver. I also love the
way Feeddler works with agregators. And Feeddler is not too bad
with VoiceOver either.

I will probably continue to be slightly undecided.

 Hi Alan,

I have a few quick comments and additions to your list of keyboard shortcuts.
Cmd plus Tab to Switch to the next app or Cmd plus Shift plus Tab to Switch
to the previous app doesn't work in either iOS 6 or iOS 5 -- these commands
worked for a while in iOS 4, and apparently in the iOS 5 beta releases to
move between apps while you were in the App Switcher window. The commands
are still listed in the aXs Lab page of iOS 5 shortcuts, but they won't work
as keyboard shortcuts unless someone is still running iOS 4. I would just
delete these or include an annotation that this shortcut was only in iOS 4.

To get to the notification center using keyboard shortcuts, press Control
option m (or VO plus m) to move to the status bar, then press Option plus up
arrow to open the Notification Center. (This is the equivalent of tapping the
status menu bar and then doing a three finger swipe down with gestures.) You
can navigate to a specific item with Control option f (or VO plus f) to type
in a few letters to search for a matching entry, and then press Enter to go
there. To dismiss the notification center and return to your previous
screen, press the escape key. On keyboards without an escape key, which
included some of the iPad keyboards, use Control plus down arrow to move to
Dismiss notification center at the bottom of the screen, and then either
use Control option space (or VO space), or simultaneously press the up and
down arrow keys (from QuickNav mode) to activate the dismissal. (This
question of getting to notifications by keyboard shortcuts was answered
several months ago on the mac-access list, but I don't remember whether I
 answered it on this list.)

I'll remind people that using Control option h (or VO plus h) from the home
screen takes you to the Spotlight search field (VoiceOver says search
iPhone), where you can type in a few letters from the name of an app, or a
contact, or a section of mail, as an easy way to navigate to that item by
finding the item you want in the list of matches and using VO plus space to
go there. The spotlight search is more likely used from a keyboard. You
could modify the entry for VO plus H Go to home screen to add Go to
spotlight search if at home screen.

Finally, an alternative way to get into keyboard help mode on keyboards
without a Control or Option key to press Control option k, is to navigate by
gestures or by a mixture of gestures and typing to Settings General
Accessibility VoiceOver; double tap or select VoiceOver with your
keyboard, then navigate to VoiceOver Practice, and double tap or select
with your keyboard. On the VoiceOver Practice screen, flick right past the
Done button in the top right corner. If your keyboard is paired, and you
have navigated to the VoiceOver practice gestures area (either with your
keyboard or by gestures), your keyboard will behave exactly as though you had
pressed Control option k (or VO plus k). This is useful if you have a
mini-keyboard without Control or Option keys, but where you want to explore
the key layout, and also will use the arrow keys to navigate a restricted set
of commands in QuickNav mode. You can exit this keyboard help mode if you
double tap the Done button in the top right corner of the screen (with
gestures). You can also exit this mode by pressing the escape key, if
there is one on your keyboard.

HTH. There are a few more tricks like using VO shift m to move apps onto
each other to create folders on your home screen, but they only work in a
limited way at the present time, and if you make a mistake you'll need to
toggle VoiceOver off and on again to reset the action of VO shift m.

 Cheers,

 Esther

RE: Using BlindSquare, was: Blind Square VS. My way classic?

2013-07-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Louise,

I am currently using a case which covers the back of the iPhone and the
sides, but not top and bottom edges. The phone goes in with the side where
the volume controls are first so that they are lined up with the cut outs,
then you just push down on the other side and the phone snaps into the case.
It is a very tight fit and just a bit hard to get it off, but the case adds
almost no bulk and I rarely take it off.

The belt clip itself could be a bit stronger in terms of the spring, but the
phone in its minimal case slides into the belt clip and it's a very snug
friction fit. The belt clip has a sort of ratchet swivel so you can turn it
easily, but once it is turned it will stay in that position.

This case was given to me by a friend and I don't even know what it is
called because he bought it I think from www.monoprice.com for $5 or $6,
very cheap, but a very good case. I think websites like monoprice.com and
other similar sites sell often very inexpensive stuff and ship directly from
Hong Kong or China.

Sieghard

Regards,

Sieghard

TextGrabber on sale for $0.99 (July 9, 2013)

2013-07-09 Thread Esther
Hi All,

In celebration of the App Store's 5th anniversary, the TextGrabber + Translator
iOS OCR app by ABBYY has gone on sale for $0.99, which the developer's
advertise as 80% off. (The prices listed yesterday, and in my last post about
these apps was $5.99). Note that while this app works very well for people who
use a StandScan Pro or Scan Box to support their iPhones, it is challenging to
use freehand (where you have to hold the iPhone at the correct distance from
the document and aligned) unless you are practiced in doing this.

• TextGrabber + Translator for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch ($0.99) by ABBYY
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textgrabber-+-translator/id438475005?mt=8

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi, Chris,

To have it displayno signature at all, just empty the edit field entirely.

Thanks,
Ari

 Hi all,

Now that I have e-mail on my iPhone, I was wondering, I know it says sent

there a way that you can have it not display a signature?
 Thanks for any help,
 Chris
