New iPhone

2014-05-31 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Hi all
Depending on how things go, I might upgrade from the 4s to whatever
iPhone will be out whether that be the newly launched iPhone or the one
or two below that. So far I have gone for the cheapest iPhone which this
year is the 4s but who knows this time round. See even though I'm on a
two year contract with my cellular provider O2 UK they have a system
whereby you can upgrade the phone at any time providing you pay off for
the phone. This can be done as the phone is a separate monthly payment
from the airtime. They call it Refresh. So you get the usual minutes
texts and data with the additional benefit of upgrading to a better
phone at any time. Once the two years is up you just pay for the airtime
as the phone has been paid off in full by then. Anyway will certainly
keep you posted.

RE: question about tune in radio

2014-05-31 Thread SSEric
Shane, what about a station that doesn't show up in the search.

For instance, there is programming I want on 680.KNBR, which broadcasts the
Giants baseball. When I search for KNBR, 680.KNBR, etc., what comes up is a
station across the bay that broadcasts the Oakland A's and other sports talk
stations in the area but not the one I want. This station is available on
Ootunes, so not sure why not on Tunein.

Might you have any insight!

  Hi, Terri,

You can check out AppleVIS.com and find reviews of barcode apps. There are
apps like Red Laser which the general public uses which seem to work well
enough for use with VoiceOver.

If you are talking about scanning UPC barcodes as found on commercial
products like food, then it's hard to beat Digit-Eyes. It has an extensive
database accessed through an internet connection. It takes some practice
learning both where to anticipate the location of barcodes and then where to
hold the iPhone for capturing the barcode, but that's true for any app.

If you are talking about reading QR barcodes that's a bit different in my
mind. At my work I have used Digit-Eyes to create QR barcodes labels containing
text which I use for labelling an inventory of items. Although Digit-eyes will
read the QR codes, I found another QR code reader app that works far better. It
is called Quarkode QR Reader, by an Italian developer, APSIS BI PAPOSS BARIO
C. S.A.S.
It is much more forgiving in locating a barcode, it immediately speaks the
text without having to touch the screen to navigate to the location where the
text is displayed, and it is ready to scan another barcode without touching the
screen again. The only feature I haven't found on it is a means to turn the
flash on and off. But, it seems to work better than many other apps in low
light levels. I have reviewed this app on AppleVIS.

  HTH,
  Jeff

voice dream questions

2014-05-31 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I have a couple of questions about the latest version of the Voice Dream App.

1. Is there a way to do a find command to search for a word or phrase in a book
or document?

2. I think you can create folders in Voice Dream, but is there a way to move
an entire folder with files in it from dropbox or do you have to move each file
individually and then place it into a folder in voice dream?
Thanks.

Any help would be appreciated.

complaints about the placement of buttons and so forth.
Or does anyone have a similar pair of stereo Bluetooth headphones that work
similarly where you can take one out of your ear easily?

 Thanks for any help

Location Services

2014-05-31 Thread Debbie Downey
Hello,

The Umano App is asking me to enable location services in settings. I went
into settings within the app and there is nothing about location services
there. I went into the Settings app and Umano isn't listed. I can't find
location services under settings either. How do I find location services for
this or any other app? I had turned off background refresh at one point to
try and save the battery but have since turned it back on and it's on for
Umano. I still get this alert to turn location services on.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Debbie

Typically there is an ad about the app store first, then most of the time your
very first search result will tell you what you want to know. In this case I
typed Umano on iTunes into the search box.:

Re: KNFB Reader for the iPhone

2014-05-31 Thread David Chittenden
Neither TextGrabber, Prizmo, nor Text Detective, require transferring anything
to any off-site location. All of these apps work directly on the iPhone.

Additionally, Prizmo has page detection technologies which tell the end-user
how to move the iPhone to get the page better into focus.

In 2011, I compared Prizmo (which did not have the page alignment assist at the
time) with KNFB Reader on an N86. We found Prizmo, on an iPhone 4, was a little
better at recognising most documents in a well-lit room.

On my iPhone 5, whilst using the StandScan Pro for ease of positioning and to
guarantee uniform lighting, TextGrabber is consistently the quickest app with
the best OCR. I find it compares favourably with FineReader on a computer.

Unless KNFB Reader comes close to mainstream OCR pricing in the App Store, I
for one, will not consider the additional cost worth it unless they have some
uniquely outstanding (game-changing) technology in the app.

you would appreciate the added functionality of the field-of-view report,

The 5S supposedly has longer battery life. However, new features and
functions drink power. For example, auto app refresh brings down the
battery as updates to apps are downloaded. the 5s also has two
processors instead of one, each working independently on different
tasks.

Re: IBooks Voice Dream

2014-05-31 Thread Alex Hall
No, VDR cannot read protected books. Books from Amazon, Nook, iBooks, and
others cannot be read in any app other than the one made by that company.

The odd sound you're hearing is probably the sound as the page scrolls. Muting
your device can help, though you will still hear the pause where the sound
normally plays.

Re: audio/charge cables for iPhone 5s

2014-05-31 Thread Alex Hall
There is, you want a thirty-pin to lightning adapter. Apple sells them, and, as
with most Apple accessories, you can find them cheaper elsewhere. Be careful
that the product you buy is certified by Apple, though, or you may get a
warning popping up on your device each time you use the adapter. Obviously,
too, non-certified adapters, cables, and chargers have the potential of hurting
your device.

A few questions about safari/other browsers

2014-05-31 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Hello list,
I posted my questions to the lists last night, but I am not sure if my
mail got through, so I am trying again.

I have a few questions about safari or other browsers for Iphone or ipad.
1. Is it possible to download music, videos or documentsfrom the
websites using Safari or any other browser, or do I need to download
that on my computer and transfer it to Iphone/Ipad?
2. Is safari or any other browser for iphone or Ipad able to play audio
captcha?
I have a particular website where I need to type captcha. There is audio
captcha available, but I cannot click play button. The play button is
there but it says it is inactive or something like that.

Thanks for your help in advance.
With kind regards
Maria

Re: Bar Code scanner

2014-05-31 Thread Jeff Samco

Hello, Robert,

QR codes stands for quick read codes. They generally appear as a
square pattern of dots. They contain text information. I understand
they may appear in newspaper or magazine ads, on people's business
cards, etc. There are hundreds of apps that will decode them and
display the information on the screen. They may contain mere text, or
a web URL or a person's contact information. I use Digit-Eyes to
create and print them onto labels which I then place on objects with
identifying information. Many apps also allow one to create QR codes
but Digit-Eyes is so accessible that I haven't tried anything else.

Jeff

Hi, Terri,

You can check out AppleVIS.com and find reviews of barcode apps.
There are apps like Red Laser which the general public uses which
seem to work well enough for use with VoiceOver.

If you are talking about scanning UPC barcodes as found on
commercial products like food, then it's hard to beat Digit-Eyes. It
has an extensive database accessed through an internet connection.
It takes some practice learning both where to anticipate the
location of barcodes and then where to hold the iPhone for capturing
the barcode, but that's true for any app.

If you are talking about reading QR barcodes that's a bit different
in my mind. At my work I have used Digit-Eyes to create QR barcodes
labels containing text which I use for labelling an inventory of
items. Although Digit-eyes will read the QR codes, I found another
QR code reader app that works far better. It is called Quarkode QR
Reader, by an Italian developer, APSIS BI PAPOSS BARIO C. S.A.S.
It is much more forgiving in locating a barcode, it immediately
speaks the text without having to touch the screen to navigate to
the location where the text is displayed, and it is ready to scan
another barcode without touching the screen again. The only feature
I haven't found on it is a means to turn the flash on and off. But,
it seems to work better than many other apps in low light levels. I
have reviewed this app on AppleVIS.

HTH,
Jeff

Hello, Robert,

QR codes stands for quick read codes. They generally appear as a
square pattern of dots. They contain text information. I

understand
they may appear in newspaper or magazine ads, on people's

business

cards, etc. There are hundreds of apps that will decode them and
display the information on the screen. They may contain mere

text, or

a web URL or a person's contact information. I use Digit-Eyes to

It
has an extensive database accessed through an internet

connection.

It takes some practice learning both where to anticipate the
location of barcodes and then where to hold the iPhone for

capturing

the barcode, but that's true for any app.

If you are talking about reading QR barcodes that's a bit

different
in my mind. At my work I have used Digit-Eyes to create QR

barcodes

labels containing text which I use for labelling an inventory of
items. Although Digit-eyes will read the QR codes, I found

another
QR code reader app that works far better. It is called Quarkode

QR
Reader, by an Italian developer, APSIS BI PAPOSS BARIO C.

S.A.S.

It is much more forgiving in locating a barcode, it immediately
speaks the text without having to touch the screen to navigate to
the location where the text is displayed, and it is ready to scan
another barcode without touching the screen again. The only

feature
I haven't found on it is a means to turn the flash on and off.

But,
it seems to work better than many other apps in low light levels.

I

have reviewed this app on AppleVIS.

Good afternoon all, what is the difference between celular data and personal
hotspot? I know what celular data is and that it is more cost effective to use
yFy when you can. I just don't know what celular hotspot is. Is it better to
have personal hotspot on or off? Thank you
Connie.

2014-05-31 Thread Mickey Quenzer
Hello Connie
Just wanted to let you know that cellular data is what you use when you're not
connected to Wi-Fi but you're browsing the Internet. A hotspot uses the
cellular data and you connect to hotspot with other devices like a laptop.
Hope this helps!

Re: KNFB Reader for the iPhone

2014-05-31 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi All,

The only thing that I would add to David's post is that with Prizmo on the
iPhone one can do batch scanning. I agree that Text Grabber with the StandScan
Pro has been very reliable for me. Unless there is some funky font, I get a
perfect scan all the time. HTh.

get in your list of favorites:

It used to be that you would get that message when you did the search.
So, no KNBR in TuneIn.

What I find interesting is that I was an avid user of the KNFB reader with a
nokia N82 for several years. one thing that users often asked for was some
kind of stand to stabilize the unit. We were told by reps from KNFB that
such a stand would cost about $200 and was not needed because of the field

Hi Andy,

Now that a device has been made, we won't have to wait for the KNFB reader app
to come up with one that would break the bank. All we will need to is to take
this puppy for a test drive. For now, I am happy with Prizmo or Text Grabber
and the StandScan Pro. Unless there are other features that are not in the
other 2 apps, I don't think I will invest in it. I also want to see what the
asking price will be for the app. If it is too high, I will forget it for now.

books into Voice Dream? I hope so! Can iTunes do it if I can't do it on the

Thanks for your help!

personal hotspot with my phone plugged into a desk top should this help with a
cellular connection? If I’m not being clear with my question feel free to tell

Re: Question about contacts

The groups button has been in the Contacts app for as long as I've had
my phone, going back to IOS 5. It's how you manage contacts from
different sources, such as Outloud, Google, iCloud and so on. It isn't
for creating your own groups of contacts. Maybe it's only recently been
added to the Contacts tab in the Phone app.

Email clients, like Outlook, Lotus Notes, Thunderbird, Gmail and so on,
keep track of the addresses you use. For example, if you send a message
to the viphone list then these clients will remember them, even if it
isn't in your contacts or address book. With these other clients, you
can bring up this list of remembered email addresses and delete them or
move them into your contacts or treat them like any other contact. Using
Google search, it looks like the Mail app on the iPhone remembers these
addresses but doesn't let you access them. This was just a quick Google
search, so don't depend on it too much without doing your own research.

I just got an iPad mini and I was having trouble accessing the facebook chat

I had a sighted friend tell me that in order to open chat you have to have the
orientation of the screen unlocked which always gives me problems.
I am wondering if there is a way to get the chat list window to open if the
screen orientation is locked on an iPad mini?

Re: Alternative browsers on iPhone

2014-05-31 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
There's an address and search bar at the top of the page. It's in the
center at the very top of the screen, just below the time. A two finger
swipe up followed by a right flick or two will get you there.

I have and still do use Chrome from time to time. I've never tried the voice

This isn't too useful since it just updates the page on the screen, and I can
get to the whole page by flicking left and right without having to page up or
down.

I'm confused by the question. Chrome is a browser from Google. It runs on
Windows, Linux, IOS, Android and probably more platforms. Safari is a
browser from Apple and it runs on Apple products and Windows. I'm sorry if I

I actually tried Chrome again and this time I was able to pull up

a website.. It loaded very fast. I do think it is faster than Safari
is. However I do find that some of the functions that are easy to
find and Safari are not easily found in Chrome. There does not seem
to be a good menu structure in the program. There are not a lot of
buttons to do things.

to be a good menu structure in the program. There are not a lot of

When I go to my Bookshare History on VDR, I only see six books that I

books into Voice Dream? I hope so! Can iTunes do it if I can't do it on the

Thanks for your help!

I also tried using the compass on a flight to Hong Kong and it also did not

The good part is that you'll find out how little battery your iPhone

RE: Celular Data and personal hotspot?

2014-05-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Lori,

Whether you turn off cellular data depends on how much data your plan
includes. If you have 2 Gb which is pretty standard then I would not worry.
I never turn cellular data off because to a large extend I have an iPhone
because it gives me access to all the mobile technology and a lot of that
does rely on cellular data. If you turn cellular data off and are not on
WiFi you can, for example, not use SIRI at all. You are the only one who has
to decide based on your data limit and your usage. If you stream music all
day long I would not do that via cellular data.

Re: Celular Data and personal hotspot?

2014-05-31 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I'm not sure what the situation is here, but you might want to turn
cellular data off if you're going to a place where you don't have access
to a cellular tower. You'll save quite a bit of battery in this case.
Also, if you'll be paying international charges for your cellular data,
you may want to turn cellular off to ensure you don't get such charges.
There may also be cases when you're running close to your data limit,
and you have access to wifi, where you may want to shut down your
cellular data.
