New iPhone
Hi all Depending on how things go, I might upgrade from the 4s to whatever iPhone will be out whether that be the newly launched iPhone or the one or two below that. So far I have gone for the cheapest iPhone which this year is the 4s but who knows this time round. See even though I'm on a two year contract with my cellular provider O2 UK they have a system whereby you can upgrade the phone at any time providing you pay off for the phone. This can be done as the phone is a separate monthly payment from the airtime. They call it Refresh. So you get the usual minutes texts and data with the additional benefit of upgrading to a better phone at any time. Once the two years is up you just pay for the airtime as the phone has been paid off in full by then. Anyway will certainly keep you posted. -- Christopher Hallsworth Student at the Hadley School for the Blind www.hadley.edu -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: question about tune in radio
Shane, what about a station that doesn't show up in the search. For instance, there is programming I want on 680.KNBR, which broadcasts the Giants baseball. When I search for KNBR, 680.KNBR, etc., what comes up is a station across the bay that broadcasts the Oakland A's and other sports talk stations in the area but not the one I want. Re: Bar Code scanner
Jeff educate me please. I am not familiar with QR codes If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning start? - Original Message - From: Jeff Samco To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, May 30, 2014 11:23 AM Subject: Re: Bar Code scanner Hi, Terri, You can check out AppleVIS.com and find reviews of barcode apps. There are apps like Red Laser which the general public uses which seem to work well enough for use with VoiceOver. If you are talking about scanning UPC barcodes as found on commercial products like food, then it's hard to beat Digit-Eyes. It has an extensive database accessed through an internet connection. It takes some practice learning both where to anticipate the location of barcodes and then where to hold the iPhone for capturing the barcode, but that's true for any app. If you are talking about reading QR barcodes that's a bit different in my mind. At my work I have used Digit-Eyes to create QR barcodes labels containing text which I use for labelling an inventory of items. Although Digit-eyes will read the QR codes, I found another QR code reader app that works far better. It is called Quarkode QR Reader, by an Italian developer, APSIS BI PAPOSS BARIO C. S.A.S. It is much more forgiving in locating a barcode, it immediately speaks the text without having to touch the screen to navigate to the location where the text is displayed, and it is ready to scan another barcode without touching the screen again. The only feature I haven't found on it is a means to turn the flash on and off. But, it seems to work better than many other apps in low light levels. I have reviewed this app on AppleVIS. Re: KNFB Reader for the iPhone
Neither TextGrabber, Prizmo, nor Text Detective, require transferring anything to any off-site location. All of these apps work directly on the iPhone. Additionally, Prizmo has page detection technologies which tell the end-user how to move the iPhone to get the page better into focus. In 2011, I compared Prizmo (which did not have the page alignment assist at the time) with KNFB Reader on an N86. We found Prizmo, on an iPhone 4, was a little better at recognising most documents in a well-lit room. On my iPhone 5, whilst using the StandScan Pro for ease of positioning and to guarantee uniform lighting, TextGrabber is consistently the quickest app with the best OCR. I find it compares favourably with FineReader on a computer. Unless KNFB Reader comes close to mainstream OCR pricing in the App Store, I for one, will not consider the additional cost worth it unless they have some uniquely outstanding (game-changing) technology in the app. David Chittenden, MSc, MRCAA Email: dchitten...@gmail.com Mobile: +64 21 2288 288 Sent from my iPhone On 31 May 2014, at 11:15, Tony t...@k5twz.com wrote: And it didn't depend on a delayed transfer to and from some site that may or not be working at the time. Re: audio/charge cables for iPhone 5s
There is, you want a thirty-pin to lightning adapter. Apple sells them, and, as with most Apple accessories, you can find them cheaper elsewhere. Be careful that the product you buy is certified by Apple, though, or you may get a warning popping up on your device each time you use the adapter. Obviously, too, non-certified adapters, cables, and chargers have the potential of hurting your device. A few questions about safari/other browsers
Hello list, I posted my questions to the lists last night, but I am not sure if my mail got through, so I am trying again. I have a few questions about safari or other browsers for Iphone or ipad. 1. Is it possible to download music, videos or documentsfrom the websites using Safari or any other browser, or do I need to download that on my computer and transfer it to Iphone/Ipad? 2. Is safari or any other browser for iphone or Ipad able to play audio captcha? I have a particular website where I need to type captcha. There is audio captcha available, but I cannot click play button. The play button is there but it says it is inactive or something like that. Thanks for your help in advance. Re: Bar Code scanner
Hello, Robert, QR codes stands for quick read codes. They generally appear as a square pattern of dots. They contain text information. I understand they may appear in newspaper or magazine ads, on people's business cards, etc. There are hundreds of apps that will decode them and display the information on the screen. They may contain mere text, or a web URL or a person's contact information. I use Digit-Eyes to create and print them onto labels which I then place on objects with identifying information. Many apps also allow one to create QR codes but Digit-Eyes is so accessible that I haven't tried anything else. HTH, Jeff At 03:54 AM 5/31/2014, you wrote: Jeff educate me please. Re: Bar Code scanner
Hi, Todd, I don't use braille so can only make a guess. Am I right to think that any textdisplayed on your iPhone screen is readable on your braille display? If so, then any QR code app should be fine for reading with braille. However, some apps may display text in locations or in ways that better suit a braille display than others. Since I exclusively use VoiceOver I found some apps work better than others, as I explained earlier about the Quarkode QR Reader app. HTH, Jeff At 11:34 AM 5/31/2014, you wrote: Jeff, Have you tried QR using Braille? How do you go to another page and chrome? In other words, how do I simply go to a web address? I don't see a place to enter an address. They may contain mere text, or a web URL or a person's contact information. I use Digit-Eyes to create and print them onto labels which I then place on objects with identifying information.
Hi Andy, Now that a device has been made, we won't have to wait for the KNFB reader app to come up with one that would break the bank. All we will need to is to take this puppy for a test drive. For now, I am happy with Prizmo or Text Grabber and the StandScan Pro. Unless there are other features that are not in the other 2 apps, I don't think I will invest in it. I also want to see what the asking price will be for the app. If it is too high, I will forget it for now. HTH. Eileen On May 31, 2014, at 2:18 PM, Andy Baracco w...@socal.rr.com wrote: What I find interesting is that I was an avid user of the KNFB reader with a nokia N82 for several years. one thing that users often asked for was some kind of stand to stabilize the unit. We were told by reps from KNFB that such a stand would cost about $200 and was not needed because of the field of view report, and the fact that holding the unit was a skill that could be developed by the user. I'm surprised that nobody thought of making a cardboard box with one side open. Re: Question about contacts
The groups button has been in the Contacts app for as long as I've had my phone, going back to IOS 5. It's how you manage contacts from different sources, such as Outloud, Google, iCloud and so on. It isn't for creating your own groups of contacts. Maybe it's only recently been added to the Contacts tab in the Phone app. On 5/31/2014 5:41 PM, John Diakogeorgiou wrote: Sieghard I think the groups button was added in a recent update. Re: E-Mail Addresses in Mail
Email clients, like Outlook, Lotus Notes, Thunderbird, Gmail and so on, keep track of the addresses you use. For example, if you send a message to the viphone list then these clients will remember them, even if it isn't in your contacts or address book. With these other clients, you can bring up this list of remembered email addresses and delete them or move them into your contacts or treat them like any other contact. Using Google search, it looks like the Mail app on the iPhone remembers these addresses but doesn't let you access them. This was just a quick Google search, so don't depend on it too much without doing your own research. Facebook chat on the iPad I finally understand what's happening but wonder if there's a work around
Hi, I just got an iPad mini and I was having trouble accessing the facebook chat area. I had a sighted friend tell me that in order to open chat you have to have the orientation of the screen unlocked which always gives me problems. I am wondering if there is a way to get the chat list window to open if the screen orientation is locked on an iPad mini? RE: Celular Data and personal hotspot?
Hi Lori, Whether you turn off cellular data depends on how much data your plan includes. If you have 2 Gb which is pretty standard then I would not worry. I never turn cellular data off because to a large extend I have an iPhone because it gives me access to all the mobile technology and a lot of that does rely on cellular data. If you turn cellular data off and are not on WiFi you can, for example, not use SIRI at all. You are the only one who has to decide based on your data limit and your usage. If you stream music all day long I would not do that via cellular data. Re: Celular Data and personal hotspot?
I'm not sure what the situation is here, but you might want to turn cellular data off if you're going to a place where you don't have access to a cellular tower. You'll save quite a bit of battery in this case. Also, if you'll be paying international charges for your cellular data, you may want to turn cellular off to ensure you don't get such charges. There may also be cases when you're running close to your data limit, and you have access to wifi, where you may want to shut down your cellular data.
