I apologize for what seems like a newbie question but I'm having difficulty
navigating a docx file containing the NFB annual convention agenda.

I've reviewed this file in Microsoft Word and see that it contains headings.
However, when I open it with the Word app on my iPhone 6 and try to navigate
to headings with the rotor set to headings, I receive a no headings found
message. I've also tried opening it in Voice Dream Reader and was
unsuccessful again in navigating to the headings with the rotor. Seems like
in Voice Dream that headings weren't even an option on the rotor.

Can someone with more experience navigating marked up documents point me to
the best app for navigating to headings using the rotor? I've tried saving
this document as a filtered html file as I used to do on my Stream for
navigation purposes but so far I've been unsuccessful in finding an app to
open it in with which I can navigate to headings with the rotor.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I am glad you can now read the document with headers.

DropBox.

I preserved the same format of the zip file so in the “s6tones.zip” file are
three folders, notifications, ringtones, and ui.

This is the direct link to the file so your browser should offer to save the
zip file, then you can unzip it where you like so you can sample the sounds
before adding them to your device.

Voice DreamReader and Sharon Reading 340 words

2015-06-06 Thread Bill Gmail

I just want to see if anyone else having this problem. When I said Sharon to
read at 340 or more words per minutes she stops reading after one sentence.
If I set her free at 320 a minute or below she reads just fine. All of my other
voices work above 320 words per minute. I am using an iPod Touch 5th Gen. I
don't know if it is resources or if Sharon just likes to read slower.
Thanks. I sent a message to the developer but thought of checking here to see
if anyone else has had this problem.

As Alan pointed out, the Cloud tab shows your entire library, everything you
ever purchased. Unfortunately the latest update deleted all the Finished
labels which means you basically just have to remember which books you read
and which you haven't read yet. You can manually set a book's status to
Finished by doing a double tap and hold on the title and then selecting
Mark as Finished from the pop-up menu. I wish Audible could do this so
status will be preserved and also that there would be a counter showing how
often a book has been read. This way if you get a new device and sign in to
your account that information would download and be displayed on any new
devices. It would also be nice if there were a way to bring up a Information
or History panel which would display when a book was bought, if a credit were
used or payment by credit card, when the book was last read/completed and so
on. I probably have 600 or 700 titles in my Audible library and I do often
like to read favourite books over again so this information would be nice.

 Jenifer,

Yes, the cloud button will show you your entire population of audible books
while the device button will show you just the ones you've downloaded to your
device. So the device group is a subset of the cloud group.

The one thing I did note is that when reviewing my entire library in the

I've been an Audible member for years so I know I have many books in my

RE: There is a new update for audible and the delete button works hi all, there is a new update for audible in the delete button works. Also you do not have to uninstall the app and then do the update

2015-06-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jennifer and Alan,

As Alan pointed out, the Cloud tab shows your entire library, everything you
ever purchased. Unfortunately the latest update deleted all the Finished
labels which means you basically just have to remember which books you read and
which you haven't read yet. You can manually set a book's status to Finished
by doing a double tap and hold on the title and then selecting Mark as
Finished from the pop-up menu. I wish Audible could do this so status will be
preserved and also that there would be a counter showing how often a book has
been read. This way if you get a new device and sign in to your account that
information would download and be displayed on any new devices. It would also
be nice if there were a way to bring up a Information or History panel which
would display when a book was bought, if a credit were used or payment by
credit card, when the book was last read/completed and so on. I probably have
600 or 700 titles in my Audible library and I do often like to read favourite
books over again so this information would be nice.

Sieghard

Jenifer,

Yes, the cloud button will show you your entire population of audible books
while the device button will show you just the ones you've downloaded to your
device. So the device group is a subset of the cloud group.

Hope this makes sense.

in the current section, and how much time is remaining in the current
section. This information is reported at the top of the book playing screen
with repeated swipes to the right. I really like this.

The one thing I did note is that when reviewing my entire library in the
cloud, the app seemed to hang and not let me progress pass the first page.
I've been an Audible member for years so I know I have many books in my
library and it may just take it a minute to load. When I closed out of the
app in the App Switcher and went back in, my books were all listed so this
might have been a first time through anomaly.

I hope Audible got this one right but I look forward to others' comments

m4r version of the Galaxy s6 tones

I'm glad Tom did the file as well, but I don't like SendSpace.

So, here is the complete zip file link from my web page, rather than from

I preserved the same format of the zip file so in the s6tones.zip file are
three folders, notifications, ringtones, and ui.

This is the direct link to the file so your browser should offer to save the
zip file, then you can unzip it where you like so you can sample the sounds
before adding them to your device.

RE: How do you delete books in Audible?

2015-06-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Teresa,

Kimber's instructions are correct and apply to the most recent version of the
app and also applied to the main version before. In between (during the last
couple of weeks or so) Audible released a version where for Voiceover users the
delete process was broken, but it is now working again. Basically I just wanted
to add that one good way to make sure you activate the correct delete button
first is to make sure you find the Refresh button, then swipe left once and
then you are at the delete button which you want to activate so that all the
individual delete buttons for each book show up. Those individual delete
buttons are down on the left side of the screen or, as Kimber, said, you can
flick right past the title, now in this last version there is a Menu button
first which gives you a couple more options like View book details and Mark
as Finished and a flick to the right past that is now the delete button.
Unfortunately in this newest version it once again just says Delete where in
the 2.4.x versions it would say Delete followed by the book title you are
deleting which was a nice feature.

This release is definitely better, but it's still not quite the same as before.
I noticed that now when you are in a book the button at the top left which used
to be Back and wich in between was unlabeled is now called Close which I
guess makes some sense since it's there to close the now playing screen.

I checked out what Alan pointed out about the details at the top of the now
playing screen and I agree that the extra information about playback progress,
number of chapters, time elapsed and time remaining is nice.

What I don't get is why Audible put in that menu button with just 2 options
which one can easily access with a double tap and hold on the title which is
how it was in the previous version and this also still works in this version.

I think we should all write to Audible and ask them to reintroduce the Action
menu because at one point I could just swipe down on a book title and get to
the delete button. Sighted people would swipe across the title and the delete
button would pop up.

Sieghard

Hi Teresa,

These instructions are for the most recent version of the Audible app,
so make sure your app is up-to-date. There have been some changes in
the deletion process, so unless you have the most recent release these
instructions won't work.

First make sure you have selected the device button so that only the
books you have downloaded are showing.

There are some buttons along the top of the screen that say something
like all, recent and delete. Double tap the delete button. Now flic
down to where the books are listed. As you flick down past the title
and author you will come to a button that says delete. Double tap it.
Be sure you want to delete the book because, unlike in previous
versions of the app, you will not be asked if you are sure. The book
will just be deleted.

I hope this is helpful.

I couldn't agree with you more about reintroduction of the action feature for

I apologize for what seems like a newbie question but I'm having
difficulty navigating a docx file containing the NFB annual

I've reviewed this file in Microsoft Word and see that it contains
headings. However, when I open it with the Word app on my iPhone 6
and try to navigate to headings with the rotor set to headings, I
receive a no headings found message. I've also tried opening it in
Voice Dream Reader and was unsuccessful again in navigating to the
headings with the rotor. Seems like in Voice Dream that headings
weren't even an option on the rotor.

Can someone with more experience navigating marked up documents point
me to the best app for navigating to headings using the rotor? I've
tried saving this document as a filtered html file as I used to do on
my Stream for navigation purposes but so far I've been unsuccessful
in finding an app to open it in with which I can navigate to headings
 with the rotor.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Accessible gps app to walk independently in UK?

2015-06-06 Thread TaraPrakash
Dear all. I will be traveling to Uk in the last week of June. I will spend some
time in London and few days in Brighton downtown. Can someone please recommend
an accessible gps app that I can use to find places and walk to them? And also
to be able to go to places using public transport.
And aside, and offlist, Are their accessible tourism packages available that
blind people can use in London?
Thanks in anticipation. and apologies for an off list question.

RE: Accessible gps app to walk independently in UK?

2015-06-06 Thread Vincent Thacker
Is the built-in Maps app not enough for what you want? You can also tell Siri
to speak walking directions to a particular place, and Siri will then work
alongside Maps, which gives you a lot of detail.

For transport, I've heard good things about Travelline.

Vince.

2015-06-06 Thread Donna
I used Apple Map the other day. I have to say I was very impressed. I was in an
unfamiliar area of my hometown. I wasn't sure where a particular street was. I
used Apple Map and it took me to where I needed to go.
Would I rely solely on any app to get me around a totally unfamiliar area, nope
not a chance.

Be My Eyes App

2015-06-06 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello Everyone,

Wondering how many people have successfully connected to a person on the Be My
Eyes app. When it first came out, I tried it and it worked great. I loved it.
Over the past several weeks, there were times when I tried it and the system
rang for a period of time without answer. I tried different times of the day
and week without success.

Does anyone have any tips on working the app?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

RE: Best App for Navigating Headings in a Word docx file

2015-06-06 Thread Alan Lemly
Well, in this particular case with the 2015 NFB national convention agenda,
the pdf file does contain a contents tab which is nice for viewing the
various parts from within Dropbox but you can't navigate by rotor headings
in it. Also, reading the various parts of the pdf file doesn't work nearly
as easily in Dropbox as does the filtered html version I created.

Alan, I don’t think the Word application on iOS can be navigated by headers.
Someone can correct me if I am wrong. I think the fact that they are

I am glad you can now read the document with headers.

Neal,

Thanks and what you say about not saving as filtered html makes sense.

The good news is that when I double tapped on the filtered html agenda
within Dropbox, that it opened in the Dropbox reader and I have access to
the headings with the rotor. So your guidance provided me with what I wanted
to accomplish.

I am surprised that a docx file containing headings doesn't seem navigable
with the microsoft word app. That may well be my unfamiliarity with the app.

Not really.
You can't walk indipendently in a place you don't know at all without
sighted assistance. You have to know the general route at least a little.
That said, there's RNIB Navigator, Ariadne GPS, Blind Square and
Navigon. Pick your poison as all of them are pretty good at what they do.

Re: how to watch the WWDC key note

2015-06-06 Thread Kelly Pierce
I will be converting the video of the keynote to an MP3 file for
listening on my bookport plus. If others want the audio file, I can
post a download link here for it. The keynote will be posted to
YouTube and available from iTunes by the next day. I will be
converting from a download from iTunes. the audio file is great for
listening on a portable mP3 player or the iPhone on the bus or subway.

I can't stand hearing the comments from the Twit peanut gallery. The
commentators make silly and inane comments while people are speaking.
I never fully hear the presentation over the constant criticism and
negative remarks.

Re: Be My Eyes App

2015-06-06 Thread Kelly Pierce
I used it about 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning. I had a minor surgical
procedure preformed the previous day. I awoke in pain and no one was
at home and there was no one I could ask locally, given the time. I
had pain medicine, but was not sure if I had the right bottle and how
many pills to take. I tried the app and after a few minutes, a woman
answered. She seemed to have a middle eastern accent. She didn't seem
to want to read me the label on my pill bottle though and quickly
disconnected. I tried again and within a minute a woman with a German
accent answered. It was mid-morning in Europe. she instructed me on
how to position the camera and pill bottle so she could read it.
Apparently, the pill bottle must be rotated in one hand while the
camera is kept straight and without movement in the other hand so the
camera does not get out of focus. she did not know how to pronounce
acetaminophen, the generic name for Tylenol, or codeine. she
apologized for her English skills, but many native English speakers
can't pronounce these names either. She did tell me though how many
pills to take before signing off in personal embarrassment. she took
time out of her life to provide valuable help at a time of need, for
which I am grateful. I wonder if others have had volunteers who could
be helpful but had a low confidence in their skills.

fortunately, I live in a big city and both a 24 hour CVS and
Walgreen's are a half mile walk from my house and across the street
from each other. It would be a real hassle to put on clothes and walk
to one of these stores for a sighted clerk to read a label on a pill
bottle in the middle of the night though.

RE: m4r version of the Galaxy s6 tones

2015-06-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard,

Thanks for the conversion and for posting the file, nice of you to put them all
in the appropriate folders, makes it easier. Also, if Jesse reads this,
Richard's download couldn't be easier and in fact is easier than getting the
file by email. When I clicked on his link Internet Explorer opened and asked me
right away if I wanted to Open or Save the file, I tabbed over to Save, pressed
enter and a few seconds later the zip file was in my Downloads folder. I right
clicked on it, selected Extract All and pressed enter... all done. From here
all you have to do is copy the tones you want to your Ringtones folder in
iTunes Media or maybe even better, copy them to the Automatically add to iTunes
folder, then open iTunes and all the ringtones will be added to your library,
you can now select them and sync them to your phone.

Sieghard

I've already converted them.
The zip file has only m4r files in it.

If you cannot save the file by following the link, I can try to send it to you
directly. Some Email programs and or services block zip files.

Not knowing how much you know about iTunes and importing files, it is hard to
know what to say about the steps to get them into your device. Also, you may
not want all of them, there are something like 100 files, some designed as
ringtones and some as notification tones and some it looks like are for some
customization of sounds that you can do on the Android that I do not see anyway
to do on the iPhone.
The folder called ui in the zip file has 56 files that fit in this category.

Here is the link again:

I'm glad Tom did the file as well, but I don't like SendSpace.

So, here is the complete zip file link from my web page, rather
than from
DropBox.

I preserved the same format of the zip file so in the
s6tones.zip file are
three folders, notifications, ringtones, and ui.

This is the direct link to the file so your browser should offer
to save the
zip file, then you can unzip it where you like so you can sample
the sounds
before adding them to your device.

Re: Be My Eyes App

2015-06-06 Thread Eileen

Hello,

In the past couple of weeks, I have used the app. Here are some problems I have
encountered, but eventually received the assistance I was requesting.

1. Connecting to a helper took too long. I disconnected and reconnected again
and was successful.
2. The helper couldn't see the object in question because it was not clear
enough. I disconnected, cleaned the lens of the phone's camera and reconnected.
This did the trick.
3. On the first attempt to connect to a helper, I was disconnected within a
second or two. This was after waiting a few minutes to get connected in the
first place.
4. And yes, I have been connected to individuals who's English has been
marginal and difficult to understand. At times, they have had a hard time
pronouncing hard words, which could happen to anyone. What I don't understand
is that there are a substantial amount of helpers to those of us who are
requesting assistance and it would be nice to be connected to individuals in a
similar geographic area. There have been times when an individual will state
that I'm there first person that they are helping. I would think there is a way
to filter the individuals in order of geographical areas to decrease the
frustrations in getting assistance for us who are seeking it. JMO.

RE: m4r version of the Galaxy s6 tones

2015-06-06 Thread Richard Turner

Hello, I too am having dictation problems of my own. I have a two-month-old
iPhone 6 got my running 8.3. I contacted Apple care plus the other day because
my dictation was not completing everything I dictated.

In other words, I would dictate a paragraph or two, it will drop off the last
three or four sentences. Very very frustrating :-( so, Apple wanted me to find
out how many gigahertz my cordless phone was running on. They thought that the
two machines might be interfering with each other

So, do you think the advice to the previous poster might work for my situation
as well?

First go to settings.

Next go to general.

Next go to keyboard.

Next swipe to enable dictation and then double tap. This will disable dictation.

Then reenable dictation try that and see if that works.

Filtered html was RE: Best App for Navigating Headings in a Word docx file

2015-06-06 Thread Alan Lemly
Ari,

What follows comes from this website:

https://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=44992

The following is from the Microsoft Word help file.

When you save Web pages or send e-mail messages in HTML format with
Microsoft Word, additional tags are added so that you can continue to use
the full functionality of Word to edit your content.

To reduce the size of Web pages and e-mail messages in HTML format, you can
save them in filtered HTML so that the tags used by Microsoft Office
programs are removed.

The good news is that when I double tapped on the filtered html agenda

to accomplish.

I am surprised that a docx file containing headings doesn't seem navigable
with the microsoft word app. That may well be my unfamiliarity with the app.

Subject: Best App for Navigating Headings in a Word docx file

Filtered HTML has been around for years. When you save a MS Word
document in HTML, you'll get a ton of extra HTML tags to preserve all of
the formatting you get when using MS Word. When you save a file as
filtered HTML you lose much of those additional tags and get something
much more like vanilla HTML. Questions like these are easily answered
with Google, and here's one of many links I found with more information
and an answer to this question:

Neal,

Thanks and what you say about not saving as filtered html makes sense.

The good news is that when I double tapped on the filtered html agenda
within Dropbox, that it opened in the Dropbox reader and I have access
to the headings with the rotor. So your guidance provided me with what
I wanted to accomplish.

I am surprised that a docx file containing headings doesn't seem
navigable with the microsoft word app. That may well be my
unfamiliarity with the app.

If my suggestion doesn’t work, you might want to try things other
than filtered files. I think I tried this once and it didn’t work. I
think Safari may need the folder that goes along with the individual
HTM file. I don’t remember what the other two options are in Word
when you create the file, but you might try them and see if they work.

Hi, If it’s an HTML file, why not read it in Safari where you can use
heading navigation.
