Re: Dictionary app, American heritage 5th edition
Mary, The interesting thing about the Concise Oxford dictionary is that you can manage to get the definition. Once you have typed in a word the definition is displayed on the screen. Fine for sighted people, not so good for VoiceOver users as I said. However, there is a more button. If you press that and then select Share, then you can select message or mail and the definition will be readable in that app. Once you have read it, then you cancel out and return to the dictionary. Or, instead of choosing one of those apps, you could select copy and then paste the definition into notes or whatever. Yeah I know, a pain to go through, especially for a short definition. Oh yes, the cost for the app was about 12 or 13 dollars. RE: Dictionary app, American heritage 5th edition
There is the Oxford Dictionary Quick Search that requires an internet connection that is pretty accessible and is free. It has ads and if the definition is really long you can't do the usual three finger swipe up to scroll through. You can get beyond that by flicking right, but the visual definition on the screen doesn't change, but VoiceOver does read stuff not visible on the screen. There doesn't seem to be a share option with that one. I still like the dictionary.com app and paying a little to get rid of ads etc. If there was a full OED option that was accessible, I'd be really tempted. I've not found anything. Any thoughts or recommendations would be great. Thanks in advance. -- Have a great day, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. APPLE SUPPORT FOR BRAILLE
Hi all, I know you can't really disclose Apple's plans, as it were, for IOS9, but I wonder if any of you testers can assure me you use the Braille facilities and are looking to iron out some of the abysmal drawbacks of using a Braille display at present. The time lag of the display is one of the things I am passionate about and another is the way in which the cursor appears to be unable to follow the Braille very accurately and I am not always sure exactly where I am placed. I shouldn't have to pick up my phone to check this out. On a general issue and not just looking at what's to come, I'd also be interested in any settings you have that make the lagging less for you, together with which display you're using. Perhaps everyone has given up with Braille input in this way now. We shouldn't have to, though, and of course, deaf-blind friends still need this, even if we can perhaps manage in other ways. If Jonathan Moson is reading this, Jonathan, has Apple stopped listening to your comments on using Braille displays? What exactly do you think needs to be done to make working with Braille displays a real pleasure and enhance life once again? Re: How to sync windos firefox bookmarks in iPhone's safari?
I'm not aware of a way to do what you want. I used to use a service and plugins to keep my bookmarks synced across IE and Firefox on all of my various systems, but I stopped using this when I just switched to Firefox and used their sync feature. I'm not sure if this service still exists and weather they have a plug in or app for Safari on the iPhone. I know Firefox isn't an option on the iPhone, but if you're willing to switch browsers, you might want to try out Chrome. I think it does what you want. Re: AppleWatch owners - how far can one stray from the phone and still have the watch work well?
Hi Keith, I do not presently own an Apple Watch, however, it is my understanding that it will work anywhere in your home, so long as everything is connected to Wifi. Therefore, you would have no problem charging your phone, regardless of where it would be located. However, there is a distance limit for communication between the phone and the watch when not on a Wifi connection. Unfortunately, I don't recall what that distance is. Re: bluez 2 by Aftershokz
That's one of m complaints about this headset. Siri and dictation are, I'm pretty sure, a limitation of the current bluetooth standard used by Aftershokz, and they'd need to make a whole new model to address the problem. Even then, I don't know that upgrading to bluetooth 4 or 4.1 would fix things. Call quality is the other problem I've run into. It's like the microphones just don't work well, and the volume others hear is very low. I find the Bluez works okay in quiet environments, and sometimes I can manage to use it while I'm outside, but it's certainly not the best for making calls. Sorry I can't offer more positive news. bluez 2 by Aftershokz
Hi all, I have the bluez 2 Aftershokz headset for my iPhone, and I like it a lot, but there is one question I have. The voice quality on phone calls really sucks. I had thought maybe sometimes, it was just a bad connection, but it seems like it is really hard for people to hear me on it. Today, when I turned it off while talking to a friend, she could hear me a lot better without it, but I can't and don't want to talk on the phone while holding it to my ear all the time. Also, SIRI and dictation are deplorable with this headset. Does anyone have any tips for getting it to work better, or is there any firmware update or something I can get that might improve this? Any help would be appreciated. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. AppleWatch owners - how far can one stray from the phone and still have the watch work well?
Hi, I'm thinking about getting an AppleWatch. I'm curious how far one can wander away from the phone while wearing the watch and still have the watch work well. It would be nice to be able to charge the phone but still walk around the house with some functionality. Thanks for any info. You might have to be sure artist names match from the original to the greatest hits albums. A real pain to do especially with classical music. Re: good clock app
I use an app called Chimes. It works on all Idevices. It allows the user to choose between West Minster, (three different options) St. Michael and Widdington chimes and sounds very good. It is not as Voice Over friendly as it used to be, but is still manageable. RE: Apple Music in iOS 9 gets a much-needed redesign | Macworld
Rose, last week I wrote with some of these kinds of questions - for answers or pointers to answers. I got no response. Perhaps you and I are the only one who hasn't figured it out or we are the only ones using Music. With much use, I am finding how lots of the app works. I don't find the same thing with radio stations as you. My issue with them is it seems I must have all the same music as Apple because they sure play a lot of what I already have. I do find if you go to radio from a song, you get a much closer type of music. Someone talked about what it really means to love a song, but I didn't get it. I would stick with the free subscription for three months. $10 per month is a big change for me, but I would probably blow that some other way.. Open to any tips you discover. The only part that works right is the music already on my iPhone. I probably am not figuring out something here but in the just over a month that I have played with it, it seems rather worthless, just a bit but not much better than iTunes 12.2. A help section to explain especially the For You tab would help, as the rest except for the music on my phone have not been especially useful in my limited experience. But then, I really did not like iTunes radio either. Until this summer I have been unable to play with the music much. I was hoping they would add a thumbs down/ban option. I really don't like any of apple music's stations. Its find for having access to such a huge music library and therefor one can create all kinds of playlists but I just don't care for their stations. It sucks when I keep having to hear the same songs and artists that I don't care for over and over. So, I just don't use the apple Music stations. One thing they have changed which I do not like is that now, you can start a radio station without having to put the song you're station is based on into my music. With iOS nine, at least in the beta being discussed by MacWorld, this is not possible. You can't start a radio station from a song unless that song is in my music. If you want to keep all of your music being just things that you own and don't want to mix in rented stuff, this change is clearly not good. When Apple Music first launched in iOS 8.4 on June 30, the streaming service was bombarded with hidden menus and a wild array of options. In fact, this menus on menus on menus design was one of http://www.macworld.com/article/2946190/apple-music-complaints-why-this-str eaming-service-needs-some-work.html our biggest complaints about Apple Music when it first launched. Well, if the http://www.macworld.com/article/2946063/ios-9-public-beta-is-live-heres-eve rything-you-need-to-know.html iOS 9 public beta is any indication, it looks like Cupertino's UX design wizards have started to clean up Apple Music's messy interface. The iOS 9 update gives the Music app a subtle but much-needed makeover so you can spend less time browsing through options and more time actually listening to music. The most drastic change to Apple Music in iOS 9 is the redesign of the More Options menu that can be accessed by clicking on the ellipses (...) next to each song. In iOS 8.4, this More Options menu was just a long list of options-pretty overwhelming, especially when listening to music on the go. Tapping it surfaced no fewer than 10 options for each song, and that didn't even include the hidden-but-basic functions to View in Album or View Artist. Everything that you can possibly do with a song on Apple Music you can do via this bloated More Options menu, so it makes sense that it
