RE: My experience with the NFL app on the Apple TV

2015-09-07 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi Keith.

So far, what you’d hear from Game Pass is the audio from the video feeds. This
is why I specify the radio broadcasts in my notes. What I hope for is the NFL
will allow streaming of the radio broadcasts over the Apple TV. However, my
suspicion is they won’t. We’ll see what happens.

The food.com app is free, easy to use and has a lot of recipes. You
can search in different ways, and save recipes to a recipe box without

Apple Watch question - adding complications

2015-09-07 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I am trying to change items in the clock face, specifically changing
complications. When I am on the color for example, and try turning the crown,
it only takes me to the next item. It does not change the color. what step did
I miss?
Thanks.

Battery Charging:

2015-09-07 Thread Donald Moore
A friend bought an iPhone 6 yesterday. They plugged it in overnight. The
battery started out at 24 percent and by morning, it only said 62 percent
and didn't say anything about charging or being on AC. Is there something
that needs to be adjusted on the phone or anything?

Thanks in advance.

I want to be able to search by type of food, like chicken. Or search by such

Any help with this would be so very much appreciated. The AP needs to work

Re: Question regarding Tune-In Radio

2015-09-07 Thread Richard Turner

Hi,
TuneIn Radio Pro gives you access to tons of radio stations and podcasts and
has no advertizing and allows you to record shows.
At this poin, you still can't save those recordings off to another device, but
that doesn't sound like it would affect your choice.
Premium adds to the features by offering, they say, forty thousand audio books.
What kind of titles or what the source is I don't know.
I think there is other premium content, not sure.
If you are in the United States, are you already using the BARD service from
the National Library Service?
All those books are free and they are getting new books constantly and many
commercial audio books which are the same recordings you would get if you
purchased them from Audible, or on CD.
One of my favorite book resources is BookShare.
They now have over 350 thousand titles. You have to use an app like VoiceDream
Reader and have a computer voice read the books, but I am finding some of the
new voices to read almost as good as a human reader.
I am fond of British female readers, and the Amy voice is amazing to me.
Bookshare is $50 per year. VoiceDream is a one time fee of $9.99.
The better voices like Amy is another $4.99, but well worth it.
The other advantage with Bookshare books is that you have a searchable text
version of the book, so you can find quotes, highlight passages, define words,
etc.
Plus, since the books are text not audio recordings, they take up very little
space on the iPhone.
I hope that is useful information.
Richard

backing up iCloud

Hello friends, as we have a broad idea of, wifi connection, locked screen
and connected to charging are required for manually backing up data to
iCloud on iPhone running 8.4.1 device.

Confusion here is, all the three things are required simultaneously or
just wifi will make the job done?

  Thank you!!

RE: backing up iCloud

2015-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As Daniel said, automatic backups only happen when all 3 criteria are
satisfied, but you did mention manual backups. Those you can of course do any
time and all that is needed is a WiFi connection, the phone does not have to be
plugged in and obviously it can’t be locked since you have to go to Settings,
iCloud, Backup and tap on “Backup Now”. If you are not connected to WiFi the
backup now option is not available, i.e. it is dimmed and can’t be tapped.

Re: backing up iCloud

2015-09-07 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

You can use battery and have the screen unlocked if you're backing up manually.
But an automatic backup will only start if it's been at least 24 hours since
the last backup, the screen is locked, you have a Wi-Fi connection, and your
phone is plugged in. Once any backup starts, whether automatic or manual, you
can use your phone normally.

Best,
Anna

If you have book share books downloaded onto your computer, is there a way to
load them onto the iPhone so that you can play them with voice dream? If so,
this would be very helpful for a friend who has multiple physical disabilities.

Visual box around spoken elements on Mac, Apple Watch and, I'm guessing, iPhone too

2015-09-07 Thread Robin Christopherson
Dear listers

I know that when VoiceOver is running on Mac OS X you get a border around
whatever has focus, and the other day someone told me that this is the case on
the Apple Watch too. I’m guessing it might be the case onthe iPhone as well. I
can’t see a way of turning this off and was wondering if anyone knew of a way.
Call me picky but it would be nice to have others see the unmodified visual
experience of what non-VO users see even though VO happens to be running at the
time.

Thanks, Robin.

Hi,

Turn the crown a bit, and then wait a couple of seconds. The watch will then
speak the currently selected color. When you have selected the one you want,
press the crown to confirm your selection.

Hi Anna, thank you for writing back. That's the problem though, I never did get
asked if I wanted to run notifications. I even went into the settings on the up
and I also deleted and then reinstall the app.

Hi,

If your friend has a recent Mac, they can use Airdrop to send the books, if
they're zipped, to Voice Dream Reader. Otherwise, be sure they're zipped, put
them in Dropbox, and use Voice Dream to open them from Dropbox.

It is also possible to buy more than one card at a time. You just change the
quantity from one to however many you want, then click the buy now button, and
there you go.

In case some wish to consider purchasing more than one card, I went back after
successfully loading to iTunes my first $100 card, by clicking again on the

The 2nd card code came in and successfully added to my iTunes account. I
figure, this second one will pay for my AppleMusic for almost a year, bringing
the cost of a monthly individual subscription down from $9.99 to $7.50.

And, the expiration on this offer indicated it may be up for another 6 days.
But, they do indicate only a limited supply is available, so it’s probably best
not to delay if you’re interested.

Hello list,

I didn’t see this posted yet, so thought I’d let folks know in case they were
interested. PayPal Digital Gifts via eBay is selling iTunes gift card codes
with a $100.00 value for $75.00 today.

I was waiting on grabbing KNFBReader once a new discount iTunes sales came
about, but was only expecting the standard 20% off. But the 25% discount was a
pleasant surprise since I’ve only seen it more or less during Black Friday and
last minute Christmas deals.

I already brabbed and redeemed my code and bought KNFBReader for 25 bucks off.
From the time I saw the deal to when I went through with the purchase, around
50 or so gift cards had been snatched up.

Anyway, I figured I’d let others know in case they too were thinking of buying
KNFBReader and waiting for a deal.

I’m a heavy Prismo and Text Grabber user and am curious to see how well
KNFBReader stacks up and hopefully can get rid of the other scanning apps if it
is as good as advertised.

What I was told by NFL tech support was you could get the radio broadcasts by

say it was available for the Apple TV. I hope it is, but I won’t be surprised

RE: iTunes gift card $100 value for $75

2015-09-07 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Thanks for this.

In case some wish to consider purchasing more than one card, I went back after
successfully loading to iTunes my first $100 card, by clicking again on the
linke Alan provided, and it gave me the option to “Buy Another”, which I did.

It is also possible to buy more than one card at a time. You just change the
quantity from one to however many you want, then click the buy now button, and
there you go.

Thanks for the helpful info. I was unaware you could submit product name and
other info to Digit-Eyes and I'll explore that further and start doing it.

Hi Alan,

Both Red Laser and Digit-Eyes do access databases for this type of
information. However, not all products are in these databases, for example,
here in Canada certain grocery chains may have products with bilingual
packaging (English and French) and said product may have a barcode which is
not listed in these databases. I believe Digit-Eyes accesses several
databases and it probably is about as good as it gets and that is why you
can submit a product name and other information for products which are not
found in the official databases.

Sieghard

Subject: Scanning App for Collecting Product Info History - REcommendations
and My Experience

Hello List,

Before asking my question, I want to share my experience with scanning apps
in order to grab product info for purposes of saving for future reference.
I've had great success with Red Laser and also use Digit-Eyes. Once I've
found a product that I believe I'll be purchasing in the future, I like to
scan it with an accessible app in order to capture info such as product
name, etc. that I can later reference through a history button that I can
use to job my memory at shopping time.

My issue is that quite often with food items especially, Red Laser will scan
the barcode quickly but have no information about the product other than the
barcode numbers. When this happens, I get pretty much the same thing with
Digit-Eyes, no real product info other than the barcode number.

Does anyone know where these apps get their product info after they scan in
the item's barcode? I would have thought there is some sort of centralized
database but I'm curious why some products have their info there but others
don't. I would really like an accessible app that has access to an extensive
grocery item database because those are the items I constantly get little
info about when scanning them with Red Laser. The ability to get nutritional
info from one of these apps would be a bonus.

Any help with my questions and any suggestions about an accessible app that
would provide product info that could be saved upon scanning would be
greatly appreciated.

Controlling offline music in Apple's music service?

2015-09-07 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, occasionally I'll see a notation that a song is available on my iPhone
for offline listening when I didn't specifically choose this option. I also
sometimes need to go into the storage settings and delete songs from the music
portion. This doesn't remove them from my music library, but just from the
device. I'm wondering what determines when a song is put onto the phone? I'd
like to know when space is being consumed, and to be able to control this.
Thanks,
Matthew

Questions regarding downloading books, movies, music, and TV shows for freee

2015-09-07 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I want to say thank you to all of you, who have answered all of my questions,
so far. The help is so, very much appreciated!

Now, I would like to know, is there a pretty easy way to watch, listen to,
read, or download books, movies, music, and TV shows using my IPhone? I am
using a 4S, running the latest update.

When it comes to the books I am wanting, I am looking for mostly audio ones.
Although, I would try EBooks, and the like.
I do have Dropbox on the phone. I also have the paid version of Voice Dream
reader. Although, I will admit, I do not know much about it.
I also have the ap, Zip Viewer on my phone. However, I can not seem to really
figure out this ap at all.

I would like to download stuff, using SendSpace, if at all possible. But this
does not seem possible. Sometimes I can get it to work. But usually I run in to
some sort of problem with it.

Any help with any of this, would be so wonderful! I would be grateful.

Thank you,

Terri

If you have book share books downloaded onto your computer, is there a way
to load them onto the iPhone so that you can play them with voice dream? If
so, this would be very helpful for a friend who has multiple physical

Re: What is the best external battery for iPhone 6 and 6+?

2015-09-07 Thread Andy Baracco
What is the best external battery for iPhone 6 and 6+?I think that’s kind of
like asking if a Ford is better than a Chevy, or a truck is better than a
sports car. i think that like a lot of things, it comes down to how you use
your device. If you spend a lot of time away from AC power, take camping trips,
etc. you may opt for a high capacity external battery. If you just want
something to give you that little extra kick to get you through the day, and
you will be returning home or to a hotel in the evening, you may opt for a
smaller battery or even one of those cases with a built in battery. Remember
that generally the higher the capacity, the bigger and heavier the battery will
be. Many have found that the larger battery on the 6 plus is enough to get them
through the day. Remember that heavy use of a GPS system, or streaming content
over the cellular network will drain the battery fast. if you do most of your
streaming at home with WIFI there will be less battery drain.

Re: Question about getting books on your iPhone to use with voice dream

2015-09-07 Thread Aman Singer
Hi,
Besides dropbox, books can also be imported to VoiceDream from the computer
through Itunes. You can also email files to yourself and open them from the
message. All this, like dropbox, applies to the zip files from bookshare. You
need not unzip the files before sending them.
Finally, just in case your friend can get them from the phone if it's a bit
easier than Safari, keep in mind that voiceDream can import from bookshare
directly.

Aman

Subject: iTunes gift card $100 value for $75

Scanning App for Collecting Product Info History - REcommendations and My Experience

2015-09-07 Thread Alan Lemly

Is the NFL Mobile app more accessible than last year? I had a free year for

Marie,

We’re not sure if that will be the case, since the radio feeds weren’t even
available during the preseason. Those start on Thursday with the
Steelers-Patriots game. You can listen to them on your iOS device though, which
is better than nothing.

So far, what you’d hear from Game Pass is the audio from the video feeds.
This is why I specify the radio broadcasts in my notes. What I hope for is the
NFL will allow streaming of the radio broadcasts over the Apple TV. However,
my suspicion is they won’t. We’ll see what happens.

RE: What is the best external battery for iPhone 6 and 6+?

2015-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Chris,

“Powerful” and “not pricy” are very subjective terms. Do you want to be able to
charge your device back to 100% from 10% once or do you want to plug it in when
it’s a 30 or 40% sand charge it back up to 80 to 90% 5 times? You can Google
the “MAH” value of the battery of the device you need the battery for, then if
you want to be able to charge the device once more or less completely when it’s
close to being completely out of juice you want a battery with at least that
same capacity or better about 20% more. For example, the iPhone 6 has a 1,810
MAH battery so I would say you want at least a 2,000 or better a 2,200 MAH
battery. This type of capacity you can get from various companies in about the
size of a lipstick or slightly larger and probably for anywhere from $20 to
$40. If you want to charge multiple times and have a 6 Plus you probably want
at least an 8,000 or 10,000 MAH battery, those are more likely to run you $50
to $70. One brand which consistently gets very high ratings is Anker, you can
find them on Amazon and they make everything from the lipstick size types all
the way to a 25,000 MAH brick which is about the size of an iPhone 6 but maybe
twice as thick.

Sieghard

RE: Scanning App for Collecting Product Info History - REcommendations and My Experience

2015-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

Both Red Laser and Digit-Eyes do access databases for this type of information.
However, not all products are in these databases, for example, here in Canada
certain grocery chains may have products with bilingual packaging (English and
French) and said product may have a barcode which is not listed in these
databases. I believe Digit-Eyes accesses several databases and it probably is
about as good as it gets and that is why you can submit a product name and
other information for products which are not found in the official databases.

RE: Accessible Recipe APPS

2015-09-07 Thread Chris Smart

Here's another vote for Paprika. People in my family are swapping
recipies on it all the time.
At 01:39 AM 9/7/2015, you wrote:
Hi Terri,
I haven't used any free ones, but my recipe app of choice is Paprika. It
is $4.99 in the US, $5.79 in the Canadian app store and it and does
support family sharing. Their website is

www.PaprikaApp.com.
What I like about this app is that you can go into browser mode and then
basically do a Google search for what you are looking for and once you
find it, you tap on the "Save" button and the recipe is
imported from whatever popular recipe site you found the recipe on into
Paprika. Here the recipe is displayed in a very nice way, you have an
ingredients tab and a Directions tab, you can scale the recipe if, for
example, you want to make a double recipe and all ingrediants are
calculated accordingly. You can also create your own categories and
select one or more categories for a particular recipe. For example, you
could have a category "Italian" and a category
"Pasta" and if you have a Lasagna recipe you could select both
these categories for the recipe and this way if you at some later time
have a lot of recipes in Paprika and you want to display only Pasta
recipes, you can do so and Lasagna would be part of the search, also if
you display "Italian it would be there but of course you may have
other Italian recipes which are not Pasta and this way you can really
filter your recipes quite well.
There are a lot of other features like the ability to make shopping
lists, have multiple timers going and so on.
Paprika supports just about every major recipe website there is and often
when I find a good recipe on Food.com or AllRecipes.com I don't even try
to read it online where there is a lot of clutter, I just import it into
Paprika where it's displayed nicely, you can turn the rotor to lines and
flick up and down in the ingredients or directions screen and read what
is there. There is also a setting you can enable so the automatic screen
lock function is disabled while Paprika is open and this way you don't
have to constantly unlock your phone when you are cooking. As far as
touching the phone with greasy, wet or dirty fingers, just stick it in a
ziplock bag, the touch screen works perfectly through the bag and
afterwards your phone comes out clean.
Paprika also has an app for the Mac and a new desktop application for
Windows. I did buy it even though the computer versions are $20, but
unfortunately it is not accessible. I do plan to bring this to the
attention of the developers because it would be nice if you could use it
on the computer and iOS devices since the recipes of course sync between

Subject: Accessible Recipe APPS
Hi once more everyone,
I was wondering, are there any free, accessible APPS out there, to find
all kinds of recipes?
I want to be able to search by type of food, like chicken. Or search by
such things as Mexican. I also want to have a way to collect, or save the
recippes I like.
Any help with this would be so very much appreciated. The AP needs to
work with a 4S.
Thank you,
Terri

Re: Battery Charging:

If you're plugged into a computer's USB port, use the iPhone charger
instead. Also, fully power down the phone or at least put it on Airplane
mode to speed up charging. It really should only take a couple of hours
though!

That's correct. Automatic won't, true. sorry, when I replied and said I
back up over Wi-Fi all the time, I meant that I initiate the backup
myself. sorry for any confusion.

iTunes gift card $100 value for $75

2015-09-07 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I didn’t see this posted yet, so thought I’d let folks know in case they
were interested. PayPal Digital Gifts via eBay is selling iTunes gift card
codes with a $100.00 value for $75.00 today.

I was waiting on grabbing KNFBReader once a new discount iTunes sales came
about, but was only expecting the standard 20% off. But the 25% discount was
a pleasant surprise since I’ve only seen it more or less during Black Friday
and last minute Christmas deals.

I already brabbed and redeemed my code and bought KNFBReader for 25 bucks
off. From the time I saw the deal to when I went through with the purchase,
around 50 or so gift cards had been snatched up.

Anyway, I figured I’d let others know in case they too were thinking of
buying KNFBReader and waiting for a deal.

I’m a heavy Prismo and Text Grabber user and am curious to see how well
KNFBReader stacks up and hopefully can get rid of the other scanning apps if
it is as good as advertised.
