RE: How Do You Use iOS?

2016-05-01 Thread Alan Lemly
Sorry for my tardiness in replying to this thread but I've been on the road.
Here's my list of apps I use regularly:

1. BARD Mobile. Far and away the app I use the most since reading takes up a
lot of my free time. I also use Voice Dream Reader and Audible for reading but
not as often as BARD Mobile.
2. NPR News and NPR One for keeping up with my favorite NPR programs. I also
use my local public radio app for listening to local public radio programs.
3. I use the native Mail app more and more to keep up with my email.
4. The native Messages app for my texting and the Facebook Messenger app to
text Facebook friends not in my telephone contacts.
5. Square Cash for sending funds electronically with no fees.
6. KNFB Reader for OCR scanning and reading.
7. Digit-Eyes for product scanning and maintenance of lists of products
regularly purchased.
8. Dropbox for maintenance of files in the cloud between my computer and my
iPhone.
9. DropVox for quick recording with my iPhone.
10. ZeroTap to paste input entered on my computer into applicable apps on my
iPhone.
11. Mini Keepass to track passwords on my iPhone which syncs nicely with those
passwords maintained on my computer with the Keepass application.
12. Google to get quick answers to pop culture questions that Siri seems much
more inept at answering.
13. Dictionary app by Farlex for looking up words as needed and for its word of
the day and other daily information including its 5-word matching game.
14. FlightView Elite for tracking flights and getting helpful gate information
when flying.
15. Fly Delta when flying.
16. My bank and investment company apps are very helpful for tracking financial
information and making credit card payments.
17. The native Stocks app for tracking stocks of interest.
18. The Fleksy Keyboard for on-screen input with my iPhone.
19. The native podcasts app for listening to episodes of subscribed podcasts.
20. iBlink Radio for other podcasts published by AccessibleWorld.
21. The native weather app to track local weather.
22. BlindSquare GPS for GPS features and simulating locations for upcoming
travel. It is very handy for saving locations I am visiting in order to explore
locations of interest which are nearby and which can be easily visited on
arrival by saving them as POIs in BlindSquare. It also makes it easy to summon
Uber to take you to these locations.
23. Uber and Lyft to get me where I need to go especially when traveling.
24. iMDB for getting information on movies, TV shows, and actors.
25. Sports Scores and Alerts for getting score notifications on my favorite
teams.
26. Shiprack for tracking packages. It's easy to set these up by forwarding a
shipment notification email to a Shiprack email address.
27. Disney Movies for syncing audio description for Pixar movies playing on a
TV or other device.
28. Song Guru for playing music games on my iPhone for guessing the artist from
snippets of played songs.

Subject: How Do You Use iOS?

Hello Everyone,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and the Mac Visionaries Mailing
List:

I was having lunch with a friend today at a sunny outdoor caf and, during our
conversation, the subject of iOS and the number of apps we use on a regular
basis came up. As we began listing our favorite apps, I once again realized
how much iPhone and it s related apps have revolutionized my life in almost
every aspect.

Below I will list the apps I used today and/or within the last two days. In
some cases I will list the name of the app, in others, I will only list the
type of app.

I hope you will contribute to this thread by listing the apps you use most
often as I and others would like to get to know you and, perhaps, discover an
app or two about which we can learn.

Okay, here we go:

1.
Clock:
I use the iOS clock for wake-up alarms and in some cases, to time activities
such as workouts or cooking.

2.
Calendar:
I use my Calendar for virtually all my appointments. Today, for example I was
reminded of two upcoming doctor appointments and, of course, today s lunch
date. I also used it today to schedule new appointments including a date with
a person I met via an online dating app which I will list below.

3.
Messages:
I send and receive text/iMessages all through the day for everything from
staying in touch with friends to financial activity notifications.

4.
The Weather app:
Even though we do not have much variation in our weather patterns out here, I
usually check the weather at least once a day, before going out.

5.
Financial apps:
I use my financial institutions, including banks and credit card companies,
apps to transfer funds, pay bills, and monitor account activities. Just as an
aside, I do not use any third-party services to manage my finances. AT

2016-05-01 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Hi. For those who are using the free tornado app by the red cross, have you
found a way to add a location? I found a couple of buttons but they seem to
just take you back to the search field after you've put in the city and
state and zip code. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

God bless!

2016-05-01 Thread Donna
Are you sure that Bard isn't asking for your son's login & password??? Just
thinking that your son may use the same info for his apple account & his Bard
login info. With Bard being already downloaded onto your device, just makes no
sense why Bard would ask for an apple ID and password. I've never seen this
problem and I share the Bard app with my 2 son's who have their own apple
account.

Re: Help needed please.

2016-05-01 Thread Gary
Do you and your son share the iPod? Maybe he’s login instead of you. Check
your app/iTunes settings to see who is logged in. If it's your son, then log
him off and log in with your creds. Maybe your son was logged in when you
downloaded the BARD app. Good Luck.

RE: Hourly news app

2016-05-01 Thread Pinky
Hi Jenn,
I have had the hourly News app for a couple years now. For some reason it is
broke in the area where you have to choose which news sources you want to
select. So if you go to settings then tap on sources. In here you would choose
from this list what news organization you want to hear. The problem is you can
flick down the list but you will have know way of knowing which one you have
selected. But in your case since you just downloaded it after you here one of
the sources you want to have in your list just flick once and then double tap
and it will be selected. Go down through the list and choose which new sources
you want. List below is how you do this.
1. Open Hourly News
2. Flick right until you hear settings then double tap to open settings
4. Now touch with your finger at the top of the page to get focus on the
screen. After you get focus on the screen flick left or right until you hear
sources button. Then double tap on sources button to open it.
5. Now flick right until you hear NPI Hourly news. This is the first news
source on the list. If you want to choose this one flick right once and then
double tap to select it.
6. Now flick right once and you will hear the next news source. If you want
this one flick right once and then double tap to select it. Now do this for all
the news sources you want to have on your list to listen to.
7. Now go back to the top of the page and click on close. Now flick left again
and click on close.
8. Now you are back on the home page of Hourly News. In the middle of the
screen is a big play button. If you flick right once you should hear Play iPad
button. Double tap on this and all your news sources you selected will start
playing. After one news source get done the next one will start automatically
until all your news sources are played.

I hope this helps get you started.
Ed

2016-05-01 Thread cmohney1961
Hello listers,
Earlier today, I wrote in asking for help because I couldn't open BARD because
it was asking for my sons App iTunes App Store password. So, I showed it to
him. He put in his password and BARD opened up just fine. The weard thing is
that we don't share an App Store account. I guess Apple apps can be weard like
Windows can. Thank you to Anna and Michelle.

You may have to calibrate the compass by moving the phone in a figure 8 motion
when you launch the app, plus it does not do well around much metal, depending
on what your building is made of.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the info on the Compass app. I did find the level after you inform

2016-05-01 Thread Michelle Bernstein
It sounds like more of an issue with the BARD mobile app somehow requesting the
wrong password information than an Apple Accessibility issue.
If your local talking book library has someone on staff with technical
expertise, you may want to give that person a call tomorrow or you can email
BARD support at NLS. Hopefully, you can avoid having to reinstall the BARD
mobile app that way. Good luck. Regards, Michelle

The weard thing is it is showing his email address and asking for his password
for the App Store. I double checked to see what it wanted. Thank you anyway.

Hi Connie,

It's asking for your son's BARD login email address and password, not app store
credentials. In other words, it's asking for the email address and password he
uses to log into BARD to download books.

I hope that helps.

Best,

When I open the native Compass app it does not show the correct direction. Is
there a way you have to set it or calibrate it?

Hi,

When you have the compass app open, you can swipe to the bottom of the screen.
There you will find where you can flick up or down to toggle from the compass

RE: iPhone & iPad freezing up

2016-05-01 Thread Merv Keck
I know someone else who is having this exact same issue with sluggishness on
their 6S+. I tried resetting it, making sure all the apps were closed,
reminders dismissed, turned on and off and on voiceover, and several other
things. Battery was at 100% charge. Eventually it started responding after
working with it for several hours and I'm not sure if we fixed it or if it
fixed itself. It was slowing down again this morning though I was told by its
owner. Is this a 9.3.1 bug?

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the info. I did find the Extra Folder. I did not find the level app.
Do you know where that is hiding?

Recommendation for a battery charging unit

2016-05-01 Thread Jim Portillo
Good morning listers,

I'll bet I can get some good recommendations here, as you're all quite
helpful.

I've heard about (I think I also saw one once) a little unit that was a
battery or case that you connect your iPhone to and it serves as a battery
while charging your iPhone. I don't know what they're called or how to look
for them online, but I'm sure some of you use them for your own iPhones.
I'd like to have one for an iPhone 6.

Any recommendations, and if so, where can I find one?

Thank you very much as always!

Jim

both Prizmo and KNFB Reader process scans on the device.
And yes, they both can scan from an image like a screen shot. The quality may

iPhone & iPad freezing up

2016-05-01 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

In the last 24 hours, I have had both my iPhone 6s & iPad Mini 2nd gen freeze
up & completely freak out. My iPad Mini had died & shut down, which isn’t
totally unusual. I let this happen from time to time, but when I plugged it in
& let it start up, it was unresponsive. I had no control over VoiceOver. My
finger flicks did nothing. VoiceOver would continuously read the lock screen.
When I managed to get into the passcode screen, it continuously readout the
number pad. I turned off VoiceOver & had sighted help, but they struggled as
well. It was very sluggish. Anyway, the Mini was like this for over an hour.
I checked it later that night & it was back to normal.

Well, last night, my iPhone did the same sort of things. Very unresponsive.
Restarting on it’s own, no control over VoiceOver, etc.. After a night of
charging, this morning it was still in that unresponsive state. I turned
VoiceOver off & we entered in my passcode, after a few attempts, it was back to
normal.

Very weird that both devices would act this way around the same time. I’ve
been racking my brain to think of something they have in common. The only
thing I can come up with is I have been charging them with my Tech Armor Apple
Certified 6ft cable, however I have done this several times over the last year.

Do you guys have any thoughts or ideas. Lol, it’s one thing for my Mini to act
weird, but not my iPhone. BTW, an oddity of my iPhone for Months now, whenever
it restarts, my screen goes down to zero.

Thanks, off to back up these devices just in case.
Traci
PS. Is there any kind of reset that might help?

 Hi Tracy,

I think it’s pretty safe to say that if you ever used KNFB Reader you
would never want to use Prizmo again. I am not saying this because the OCR
is that much better, but the ease of use for a blind person to use and get
great results with KNFB Reader is unbelievable. I used to use Prizmo as
well as well as another OCR app which was popular for a while and for
which I forgot the name, but once KNFB Reader came out they all went the
way of double tap and hold, then double tap again to delete. KNFB Reader
is expensive, but is it ever worth it if you do OCR on a regular bases and
you can get it for a reasonable deal if you pick up some 20% off iTunes
gift cards when they are available at various resellers throughout the
year and then wait until KNFB goes on sale for $75 or so. If you then have
discount cards you can get it for $60 and it has been on sale for less at
times, I think as low as $50 at one point in which case it would have been
 $40 with discounted gift cards.

 Sieghard

The apps I use most frequently are:

Prizmo. Which it would be interesting to read a comparison between Prizmo
 & KNFB.
CamFind, excellent app to scan just about anything. Even importing a
 screenshot.
CloudClip. I absolutely love this app. I have it on both my iDevices &
Mac. What I copy to the clipboard is available on each device. Every so
often, it is a bit buggy & doesn’t copy over right away, but most of the
 time it works brilliantly.

Twitterrific. This is my go to Twitter app.

2016-05-01 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, first of all, I like this thread. I have a couple follow up questions.

Something I don’t know for either app, is how private are they? Does any of my
scanning go online or on some sort of server? If I am scanning bank documents
or medical documents.

Also, with KNFB, can it scan from a screen shot? I have been doing a lot of
family history & at times take screen shots of census documents or old
newspaper articles. These are screen shots on my iPad mini.

Thanks all,
Traci
PS. A while back, I wanted to scan a letter someone had posted on Instagram.
Well, Prizmo didn’t do that great with it. Cam find didn’t do well. So, I
found this free app called, Scanner & Translator Free - convert photo to text
and make translation to more than 90 languages by DataCom
https://appsto.re/us/NZ8xY.i

It worked like a charm to scan the screen shot of the letter. Just a FYI, if
anyone is looking for an additional app.

Re: Adding Favorites on Youtube App

2016-05-01 Thread englishrider91
When you're playing a bideo, there will be a button on the screen called add
to. Tap on that, and you'll come to a screen with two options, add to playlist
and add to watch later. Tap on add to playlist, And favorites will be in
there. Tap on favorites, and you're done.

Thanks,

Re: Weather Radio Question

2016-05-01 Thread Lea W Langley
Hi all, I had the same thing happened to me. I put my location in, and
discovered that there were two. I deleted one and now there is only one. I
don't believe I ever got any double alerts, but it was annoying having to
locations in the app. Just wanted to let you know that it does put in the
current location automatically, so your current location does it need to be
saved, as you said. God bless, Wren Langley

Thanks for the feedback, Keith, maybe as more Voiceover users buy the QardioArm
hardware and request full accessibility of the app it will happen. I’ll
certainly check it out and send my feedback to the company.
I guess I am going to send my Amazon unit back, though, since after I spoke
with the customer service guy he must have assumed I definitely wanted to
return it although I hadn’t quite decided. In any case, a few minutes after the
call I received an email telling me that the return process had been initiated.
Ordering from the company did end up costing $9.50 shipping, but for some
reason they did not charge any taxes (we have 12% sales taxes here in British
Columbia) so while the Amazon unit cost $124.99 + the taxes for a total of
$139.99 (that is with free shipping) the one from QardioArm was just $104 +
$9.50 shipping for a total of $113.50 so about $26.50 less.

I got my Qardioarm last October. By chance I had seen my physician earlier that
day. The readings were nearly identical, within only 1 or 2 off, quite
surprising to me given the natural variability of BP readings.

I’ve contacted Support twice about the app not being totally accessible, though
I can get readings of blood pressure and pulse from each reading, and previous
readings, without difficulty.

There is an option for the device to take 3 consecutive readings with only a
brief pause between them, but I haven’t been able to change to this setting
from within the app.

They did tell me in November that they had engineering working on it, but by
March it still wasn’t fixed. They did seem receptive, again in March, when I
pointed this out. I haven’t checked this functionality recently.

While I was in rehab following an accident last year, an aide used a wrist

Mine won’t be here for a few more days yet so I can’t give you my opinion until

I actually got all those 3 apps quite some time ago, so will say that I have
no idea if any of them have been pulled out since.
I tend to use wired headphones, so the awareness problem doesn't concern me.

I can say from experience, that uListen is actually the only one that does
work fine along side other apps and audio, as the other 2 often have a habit
of not working when one comes out of the app, so uListen is actually by far
the best one to use. it has a quite nice adjustable noisegate feature as
well, which can be used to only start sending audio above a certain level,
which especially for working along side music or games, is another very
handy feature.
it is also the only one to offer real-time listening with out any delay.

Hi Simon,

I am very interesting in some app that would let me listen to the outside
world while having my headset on; however, when I looked at the three you
mentioned, just reading their descriptions, here's what I found:

Ulisten: does not say anywhere that it will mix the environmental sounds
with other audio?

Awareness: says it will not work with wireless headsets?

Speech Amp: could not find this one at all, is it still around?

Thanks for any other recommendations, or further explanations.

I use a fair number already mentioned here, plus,
super market apps, such as tesco, sainsburys, ocado, asda, and morrisons.
all of the above, for doing online super market shopping to be delivered.

ebay,

paypal,

various games, including a lot of the choice of games titles, king of dragon
pass, turf wars, and many others, these are great for long train journeys,
especially if one is feeling a bit tired, as they keep the brain more
active, so one is less likely to fall asleep and miss one's station.
(I would recommend also running something like uListen, awareness, or speech
amp, which will then also let you listen to what is going on around you such
as station announcements, whilst you have your headphones on for your game).

trainline. for booking train tickets.

one click cab. for finding/calling taxis all over the UK.

in a pub, pub & bar finder, find me boozer. all of these are for finding
local pubs all over the UK.

track my hack. this tracks my rout and speed, when I am horse riding.

hungry house, or just eat. for finding/ordering takeaways.

tide times. a useful one for those who like there sea swimming, and need to
know local tide times.

music id, sound hound, music DNA id. these are good if you hear a good track
on the radio and want to find out what it is to buy or download it,
especially if the presenter has a habit of not mentioning what track is
coming up, or just been played.

meet up. this one has really helped me improve my social life. it finds
various groups in your area, that do all sorts of things, from the purely
social, to the active.

various tv apps, such as bbc iPlayer, ITV hub, 4OD, demand 5, racing UK, and
H play, (which is for the tv channel horse and country).

wild swimming britain, beach live, beach world, beach selecta, free swim.
all of these to find good places for open water swimming.

Well what works here are Apple maps, Google maps, Navigon and Tomtom in
combination with blindsquare. None of the apps that have been mentioned here in
the past as good gps apps work here and we have no local accessible
alternatives as far as i’m aware. There are rumors about upcoming accessible
gps apps from time to time but they stay rumors or are limited to one town or
parts thereof.
Same goes for transit apps. I really wish Moovit would cover all of Sweden, we
dearly need something like that.
One local app or app combination that works very well in Sweden however is
Tågtavlan and Tågkoll, (train announcement and train check) two apps where you
can see what trains arrive on a station near you and when they arrive and with
the train checking app you can watch a departure and get info if it’s late or
if tracks have changed and the like.

Can I get step count and distance count from the FitBit Flex as well as the
vibrating alarms? Can Rebecca and others who use it comment on the info you can
get from the app? Does it give false readings if you type a lot (I keyboard
nearly constantly at work) and therefore move your hands or if you tap your
foot? I am just scared of getting something and finding out it doesn’t work so
well for me.

Thanks.

Hi Cristobal. I have a fitbit flex. You use it through the fitbit app on your
phone. There are silent alarms which you can set that vibrate. I can put it on
my wrist or in my pocket and still feel the vibration.

  Hello list,

up in the morning to avoid disturbing my wife as I’m more the early bird of the

more powerful than the sun...

Getting a tactile bedside clock to avoid having to engage my iPhone during
the night and possibly wake her up is easy enough, but the alarm thing, not so
much.

I’ve looked around and haven’t really found anything very convincing. They’re
either inaccessible with bad reviews or more geared towards the deaf market
which entails bed shaking mechanisms. Having lived through more than my fair

night and currently living in earthquake country, this is an absolutely
unappealing option for me. That and I’m sure my wife would probably strangle me
in my sleep after the second or third time of it scaring her awake.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I was contemplating getting a Fitbit flex
since in its description, a silent vibrating alarm is specifically highlighted
as one of its features.

It’s been suggested to me to also consider getting an Apple Watch. I’m really
not keen on getting an Apple Watch. Much less spending a couple hundred bucks
even for a refurbished or used one for this one specific task. $80.00 is a more
palatable option at least for this circumstance.

Does anyone have any experience with the Fitbit or any of its variations and
associated iOS apps? Is the device by itself or in conjunction with the iOS app
or even connected to a PC accessible? Specifically when accessing this silent
vibrating alarm feature?

  Any input would be appreciated.

  Thanks,

  Cristobal

Hi Ed,

Since the Flex step count is movement based, there is always a possibility for
a false count. I don’t know that typing would count as steps, but if you wear
it on your wrist and don’t swing that arm with every step, you won’t get an
accurate count. You might want to try a type that clips to your waist. I have
the One. It can be clipped anywhere and will count steps accurately. It also
has the vibrating alarms.

I used to have a Flex, and like the One much better because of how it counts.
I either have it clipped to a pocket or my waist. You can clip it so that the
One is inside your pocket so it doesn’t show.

These are just some things to consider before you buy.

Good luck,
Lois
