Jim! When the program says "connecting with the first available contact, it
does need an action on your part. About halfway up on the righthand edge, you
will find a button that you have to tap to complete the connection and you
should hear something like "request being actioned".
It all will take 2 or 3 minutes to complete.
In the past, I have had a successful connection with a woman in Thailand, but
she, or I thought so anyway, had an Australian accent.

Here’s another question about this app.

Every time I try to get a connection, it’s almost as if doesn’t even go
through. It basically cuts me off immediately. What am I doing wrong? I’ve
tried looking at the settings, but nothing really comes up that could help me.

Hi Jewel,

I used Be my Eyes for the first time a couple of days ago when I was trying to
get past a captcha in the middle of the night when my wife was sleeping. After
it rang for a bit it just sat there and I think said something about
connecting, but it took probably a good 2 or 3 minutes before very nice young
lady with good English but a Russian accent picked up. She read the captcha for
me in no time and while I was close, I was a bit wrong as she was from the
Ucraine and not Russia.

If Be my Eyes doesn’t work you can also try the app “Crowdvis” or “Crowdviz”
not totally sure how it’s spelled.

Sheep are not a problem here, but I usually do have some moose in my backyard
in the fall/early winter. They stop by to eat the apples on my apple tree and
more rarely a black bear may wonder in as well.

Sieghard

Actually, elk and wapiti are the same, but moose are altogether a different
animal. I am in Canada and specifically in northern British Columbia where we
have everything running around in the mountains from moose and elk to various
smaller deer, caribou, mountain goat, mountain sheep, black and grizzly bears
and so on. Anyhow, I don’t want to get too much off-topic. Hopefully Be my Eyes
will work for you or, as I said, if not try Crowdvis.

Re: Botvac discussion, how about other connected major appliances like washers and dryers

2016-06-12 Thread Brent Harding
What about the ovens? Even if we can put braille on the most used controls, do
they always start out on 350 degrees, or might we accidentally broil the
cookies if a high temperature was the last thing used by someone else? I'm glad
that the stove at my apartment is all analog because I can always set the
marked dial where I want it to be, but those are likely a dying breed. I wonder
also if the stove tops with the old style not flat burners are getting hard to
find as well?

Well, I did have my Maytec washer and dryer for 20 years now and they still
work as far as it goes. However, the washer is a very simple top loader and
they are just not as efficient and don’t clean as well as the front loaders. I
should mention that I am 49 and even when I was a little kid of 6 or 8 years
old (more than 40 years ago) our washers in Germany were front loaders. Anyhow,
Samsung and LG give 10 years warranty on the motor I think, but the only
company that officially rates their washers and dryers for 20 years of use is
Miele. I also know from our local repair guy here that he says comparing Miele
and to some extend Bosch with brands like Samsung, LG, Whirlpool etc. is to
some extend like comparing a high-end german car with an economy Korean model,
just not the same quality goes into them. Of course there is the issue of
whether one would want to have their washer and dryer for 20 years and to pay a
bit of a premium to get this. Maybe I would totally want to change or upgrade
again in 10 or 12 years and then buying something that is half the price might
just do fine.

  Hi List,

The discussion about the Neato BotVac which can be controlled with an
apparently quite accessible app made me think again about other connected
appliances. I’be been hearing for at least the last 3 or 4 years how Samsung,
LG and other manufacturers are showing off connected appliances at CES in Las
Vegas, but very little seems to have made it to market. Yes, there are things
like the Instant Pot and maybe other small appliances which have apps and there
are now several other devices like connected thermostats and other home
automation devices which can be controlled with apps, but what about washers,
dryers, dishwashers and stoves/ovens. I am totally in the market to replace my
20-year old Maytech washer and dryer and I am prepared to pay more or less top
dollars for a really good front load washer, but while I did see an LG model
which connects to Wi-Fi and has an app, it seems controlling the washer with
said app is limited and apparently relies on NFC to some degree so the reviews
on the app store in Canada for the iOS app are basically “It doesn’t work”.

I really wonder what is so difficult, the technology for this is out there. I
just recently purchased a high-end Bosch dishwasher and didn’t realize that the
model I bought had touchscreen controls. I looked at a model just below the one
I bought (the 800 series) at the Sears store here and it had push buttons and I
decided to buy the 800 Plus model which was even quieter. The sales person told
me it had the same controls and I never checked until I had it totally unpacked
and half way connected. I decided to keep it since mostly my wife is starting
it and in the case of this model it would be possible to mark the spots where I
would have to touch with dots. One thing I definitely like is the fact that I
actually have to put my ear within a foot or two of the dishwasher to even hear
that it is running, it operates at 40 Db and it’s totally amazing.

I have been checking out appliances online since I live in a small town of
6,000 people and while there is a Sears here which has some stuff on display
and another store, mostly they don’t stock the top of the line models and
nobody here sells the high-end german brands like Miele. One Miele model
apparently is completely operated by a dial and push buttons, but most of the
high-end Samsung and LG models have a dial which I think isn’t even accessible
as it turns continuously and there is

2016-06-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

RE: Botvac discussion, how about other connected major appliances like washers and dryers

2016-06-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Old time radio app

2016-06-12 Thread Candy Lowe
Hello everyone,
I just downloaded OTR which is old time radio app. It seems to be pretty
accessible. I want to use it for my 95 year old dad. His eyes are going bad
and I am trying to find things to pass his time. Of course, I am going to have
to get the program ready for him, and turn it on and off. I am going to play
it through a blue tooth speaker. I haven't played with the app much yet, but,
I'm wondering, if the episodes will play one after another or will I have to
start each one. If there is a better app or way to me to listen to these
programs, I am open to all suggestions.
I have never listened to these programs for myself, so I am not familiar with
them.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Amazon video on Idevices

2016-06-12 Thread Candy Lowe
Denise, I use Amazon prime once in a while and have had no problem with it. Do
a search, find the program you want to watch, you can then either download or
stream the episode. I have never downloaded the episodes, I always stream
them. I have also used the watch list with no problem. What problem are you
having, does it just not stream? You can write me off list, if you like.

2016-06-12 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
Hi Keith,

I shall respond off list, as we are speaking more of the attributes of the
Vac rather than the app.

However, while we are on list, I should like to say that extending the use
of the iPhone beyond its, originally, perceived potential, is still valid for
the list.

I see mention of blood pressure monitors, one pot cookers and fitbit
accessories, and all are valid for this list, in my opinion. But, I never
wanted to tire the list with too much enthusiasm on my part. The simple fact is
that this vac has reinvigorated my interest in my house and my environment,
generally. The Bot will work without the app, but in a most limited form, with
the app, it becomes something that one can contral just like anyone else.

See you off list,
Sandy.

2016-06-12 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Sandy,

Thanks very much for all the info and the demos.

We have a mix of carpet and tile. Can one easily set up a carpet day and a tile
day, giving time to switch out the brushes for the different floor surfaces??

How much softer is the noise in Eco mode?

Please keep me informed if you have to go off the viPhone list by adding me to
your email list at the following:

Hi Ed,

Oh! It has suction alright! I think it might be the most powerful of the
robot vacs. Yesterday, my first time using it, I used the Turbo mode, which is
the most powerful, together with the rotating brush, rather like those of an
upright vacuum. It did a splendid job, but today, after finding another brush
in the box (by the way, the brushes are easy to swap and the dust bin is easy
to empty) well, this second brush is also a rotating brush, but is more like a
multiple squeegy! I looked it up on line and discovered that it is called the
"spiral blade brush" and is recommended for hard floors. Since most of my
floors are hard floors, tiles and wood, I gave it a go and I changed the power
mode to "Eco", less powerful. Well, I was delighted to see that not only did it
do just as well as the other brush at picking up dust/crumbs etc, it also buffs
the tiles/wood, making them feel nicer and more shiny!!! My Roomba, in the
past, used to do this, and I wondered if the Neato product could do the same
and it can! I should say that whenever the floor is vacuumed with our very
powerful suction vac (a conventional one that is) the floors always looked
clean to the sighted, but to me, who goes by the feel, they never were quite
nice to the touch. Now, with the BotVac and the new brush, I keep bending down
to admire the lovely shiny clean tiles!!!

What does it cost? From Amazon in the UK, I paid a wacking 530 pounds
sterling! However, Jeremy seems to have found an excellent deal from Best Buys
(I hope I have that right. Perhaps Jeremy could give some details again?)

Hope this helps,

Hi Sieghard and Marie,

Now, now! Before you start getting serious and start looking at model
numbers, please remember that I have had this particular toy for about 24
hours! I don't know how long Jeremy has had his, but, I think it reasonable to
say that we are both still on a learning curve. For example, accessibility,

you can however, create a folder and then move it to the Doc.

Just move itt like any other app and drag it down into the dock. If itt is
not in the position where you want it the first time around, you can drag it
again left or right inside the dock which actually is easier than dragging
apps on the home screen since you can't create a folder in the dock so you
can't accidently drag it on top of another app.

Do a double tap and hold with one finger and not two fingers. The two finger
double tap and hold allows you to label an object in voiceOver.

Hi Ed,

Hi Sandy,

If I do buy one and don’t like it I will hold you entirely responsible.
You will have to buy it from me and then you can have a BotVac competition or
maybe they can even fight together? You can start the WWBV (world wrestling
botvac) organization and you’ll probably become a billionair at which time you
can afford an entire human staff to cook, clean and organize your life.

Hi Sieghard and Marie,

Now, now! Before you start getting serious and start looking at
model numbers, please remember that I have had this particular toy for about 24
hours! I don't know how long Jeremy has had his, but, I think it reasonable to
say that we are both still on a learning curve. For example, accessibility,
seems very good, once you have set up the wifi, but I have only done the most
basic commands thus far. I have only sent it off to do its own thing,

As for going under beds: it is 12 cm high, I think that might be
about 4 and 3/4 inches high. My bed is about 2 ft 6 high, being an old brass
type, so, obviously, no probs there, I could possibly fit the entire Dagganham
Girls Brass Band under there! But if you have something more modern, much less
than 5 inches might be too tight.

Hi JoJo,

You must have updated your phone to a new iOS version which is when this
message appears. Nothing to worry about, though, you just double tap on where
it says “Slide to setup” and after it does its thing all is as it should be.

This morning I had to reboot my phone. After it rebooted, it said slide to set
up. I tapped on the slide to set up, it said something about activating my
phone. Has anyone ever had this happen. This is really weird. Any help would
be appreciated.

Thank you

Oops, sorry, I meant to say that I really like the QardioArm blood pressure
monitor, it is easy to use and seems quite accurate. I also have at least one
other friend in Germany who has one, another friend who is about to buy one and
I know several people on the list here have them, too.

Hi Ed,

I am not getting a BotVac any time soon, I have a very good and powerful
central vac and while it sounds like a nice little device which may actually
bridge the gap from a toy to being very useful, I am quite capable of vacuuming
my house, in any case, my wife and I both do it so it’s not that big a deal and
I am first in the market for some other new appliances like a washer/dryer and
possible an over the range combination microwave and ventilation hood. Our
kitchen is not that large and I really love space-saving and efficient
appliances like that. Some microwaves can even grill so I might be able to get
rid of both my microwave which is about 20 years old and my toaster oven by
installing one device in a space which is already taken up by a conventional
hood fan over the range anyways. Then maybe I am going to also replace my rice
cooker/steamer and slow cooker with one of the Instant Pots which sound
interesting. This would mean I replace 5 devices with 2 which would save a lot
of space.

Hi Ed,

Yes, it is a full vacuum cleaner with brushes and also sucktion. Sandy is in
Ireland so whatever she paid over there wouldn’t be very representative in the
States. On Amazon.com they seem to go for around $700 US for the Wi-Fi
connected version which can be controlled by an app.
Another simpler version is listed at $450.
For the Canadians on the list who wonder what it costs here in Canada, the
connected version is listed for $999 on Amazon.ca as well as on the BestBuy.ca
website. $700 US currently is about $930, of course by the time you add the
taxes, here in British Columbia it would end up costing $1,120, $1,130 in
Ontario. I’ll certainly take a look next ttime I’m at a Best Buy, I am in any
case shopping for a new washer and dryer, but I’ll post something about this
separately.

Now, now! Before you start getting serious and start looking at model

hours! I don't know how long Jeremy has had his, but, I think it reasonable to

seems very good, once you have set up the wifi, but I have only done the most

Botvac discussion, how about other connected major appliances like washers and dryers

2016-06-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi List,

The discussion about the Neato BotVac which can be controlled with an
apparently quite accessible app made me think again about other connected
appliances. I'be been hearing for at least the last 3 or 4 years how Samsung,
LG and other manufacturers are showing off connected appliances at CES in Las
Vegas, but very little seems to have made it to market. Yes, there are things
like the Instant Pot and maybe other small appliances which have apps and there
are now several other devices like connected thermostats and other home
automation devices which can be controlled with apps, but what about washers,
dryers, dishwashers and stoves/ovens. I am totally in the market to replace my
20-year old Maytech washer and dryer and I am prepared to pay more or less top
dollars for a really good front load washer, but while I did see an LG model
which connects to Wi-Fi and has an app, it seems controlling the washer with
said app is limited and apparently relies on NFC to some degree so the reviews
on the app store in Canada for the iOS app are basically "It doesn't work".

I really wonder what is so difficult, the technology for this is out there. I
just recently purchased a high-end Bosch dishwasher and didn't realize that the
model I bought had touchscreen controls.
One thing I definitely like is the fact that I
actually have to put my ear within a foot or two of the dishwasher to even hear
that it is running, it operates at 40 Db and it's totally amazing.

I have been checking out appliances online since I live in a small town of
6,000 people and while there is a Sears here which has some stuff on display
and another store, mostly they don't stock the top of the line models and
nobody here sells the high-end german brands like Miele. One Miele model
apparently is completely operated by a dial and push buttons, but most of the
high-end Samsung and LG models have a dial which I think isn't even accessible
as it turns continuously and there is no arrow on it one can feel or mark and
as you turn it little lights light up showing you what cycle you have
selected. On the Bosch washing machine the dial does have a tactile line and one
could write down the list of cycles/programs (I think there are about a dozen
or 15) and then start at 12 o'clock and turn the dial clockwise or counter
clockwise and count the clicks. But all of the models I have seen so far have
touch controls as well and it seems some you have to push multiple times to get
to the setting you want.

Has anybody found anything that does work with an app or anything that talks or
is accessible in other ways? I know you would have to have bought something in
the last several months since models usually change each year so if there was
an accessible model 3 or 4 years ago chances are that model doesn't exist any
more. At least they should make these things talk which probably wouldn't be
very difficult given today's technology.

Regards,
Sieghard

still, it is early days. In other words, make sure you can send it back if you
do go for it, and please don't hold me to blame if you are disappointed

OK, caveat emptor and all that, plus a bit of cave canem and tempus
fugit,my new toy is called the Neatorobot botvac connected. There are several
models of the neato robot vacuum cleaners, the only one that works with an app
is the one which includes the word 'connected".

As for going under beds: it is 12 cm high, I think that might be about 4
and 3/4 inches high. My bed is about 2 ft 6 high, being an old brass type, so,
obviously, no probs there, I could possibly fit the entire Dagganham Girls
Brass Band under there! But if you have something more modern, much less than 5
inches might be too tight.

I think that this Neato product has the best and easiest dust bin, both for
removal and emptying. It was nearly full after today's effort, and Hugh was
sure it wouldn't have much to get, seeing as he had hoovered, with a powerful
traditional vac recently. I had a lot of dog hairs in it, though the dog is not
meant to moult and Hugh was sure he had got them all! Another nice thing, but I
haven't tried it yet with the app, you can spot clean. Lets imagine you have
spilt something in the kitchen, sugar or flour, perhaps, and you know it is in
a certain area, just go get your Bot, carried

it less worry some and I drag the app down and got it where I wanted it.

Just move itt like any other app and drag it down into the dock. If itt is not
in the position where you want it the first time around, you can drag it again
left or right inside the dock which actually is easier than dragging apps on
the home screen since you can't create a folder in the dock so you can't
accidently drag it on top of another app.

Do a double tap and hold with one finger and not two fingers. The two finger
double tap and hold allows you to label an object in voiceOver.

RE: Unboxing my Neato BotVac! Sand Tomkins has shared a file with you using Dropbox

2016-06-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

For the Canadians on the list who wonder what it costs here in Canada, the
connected version is listed for $999 on Amazon.ca as well as on the BestBuy.ca
website. $700 US currently is about $930, of course by the time you add the
taxes, here in British Columbia it would end up costing $1,120, $1,130 in
Ontario. I’ll certainly take a look next ttime I’m at a Best Buy, I am in any
case shopping for a new washer and dryer, but I’ll post something about this
separately.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard and Marie,

Now, now! Before you start getting serious and start looking at model
numbers, please remember that I have had this particular toy for about 24
hours! I don't know how long Jeremy has had his, but, I think it reasonable to
say that we are both still on a learning curve. For example, accessibility,
seems very good, once you have set up the wifi, but I have only done the most
basic commands thus far. I have only sent it off to do its own thing,
once!!!True, I do have experience of Roombas, and do know what to look for, and
I would say that this seems to be even better and costs 2/3 of the price, but
still, it is early days.

Lets imagine you have
spilt something in the kitchen, sugar or flour, perhaps, and you know it is in
a certain area, just go get your Bot, carried easily by the handle, put it just
in front of where you think your spillage is and press the spot clean button,
or use the app, and it will clean a square of about 4 ft (don't quote me on
just how large the area is, can't remember just now) starting with the outer
perimeter and working in. So, you don't have to do the whole room if it doesn't
suit.

Lastly, if anyone is serious about one of these, do look around. Amazon isn't
bad, in fact, it might be the cheapest, but some have extended warrentees for
up to 5 years, worth looking at IMHO.

Wine time now, will clink a glass with my new pal Bottom.

By the way, I personally rarely use the Contacts app itself and have it stuck
on I think my third home page where I keep apps I rarely use because I find itt
easy enough to just open the Phone app and tap on the contacts tab which is
just about above the home key. That basically give me access to my contacts the

Do a double tap and hold with one finger and not two fingers. The two finger
double tap and hold allows you to label an object in voiceOver.

2016-06-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Just move itt like any other app and drag it down into the dock. If itt is not
in the position where you want it the first time around, you can drag it again
left or right inside the dock which actually is easier than dragging apps on
the home screen since you can't create a folder in the dock so you can't
accidently drag it on top of another app.

am doing wrong. Again I do the two finger double tap and hold and then I
hear some beeping and I move my fingers up but it goes into edit mode.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Re: Looking for an outdoor thermometer and accesible app combo

2016-06-12 Thread Alan Paganelli
Blind Mice Mart sells an indoor out door thermometer. The unit talks giving
you the time and temperature both indoor and outdoor at the top of the hour or
on demand. The outdoor sensor requires 2 triple A batteries and the base
station requires 2 double A batteries. I don't remember what I paid for the
talking clock but it wasn't all that expensive and Blind Mice Mart has all the
info. It can be set to read temperatures in either popular format your choice
at the flick of a switch.

Amazon video on Idevices

2016-06-12 Thread denise avant
Hello everyone,
I have Amazon prime, and wanted to play an old television show on my iPhone,
which is running the latest Ios. However, I could not figure out how to play
the first episode of the show, even though I sent it to the watch list. In
fact, I don’t even find it in the watch list when I go to it. does anyone have
experience with the Amazon video app on the iPhone?

Re: How to tell what is using your location services

2016-06-12 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
Incoming notifications are part of the push notifications service
which should differ from the location services. It is expected fro
user to want some notifications while app is not running or it is
removed from the switcher but there's no need for location service
to be turned on if the user are not actively using the app depending
on te location. GPS extended usage drains battery a lot more than
notifications and user should know if some apps are using GPS when
completely turned off.

Hello Mary,

I am confident that disabling the Background App Refresh service is the solution to your problem to the extent that the location services icon will no longer be displayed in your status bar when an app is not actively using it.

The funny thing is that even when the Background App Refresh service is disabled, many apps continue to run in the background, even when not in the app switcher. For example, I continue to receive notifications from the Facebook app, the Twitter app, the native mail app, my banking apps, and several other popular third-party apps.

Hi Gordon,
Oh, I am not saying that the problem has been solved. I was just able to find the setting that Mark was talking about, and discovered that I had not turned it off. So I did so. Now, if over the next several days, I don't see that location services thing in my status bar, I will have to suppose that it did indeed solve the problem. The question as to why is still a Mistry, since the app switcher is empty when that location services thing shows up.

If I recall correctly, you said you've been noticing Location Services icon even when the apps which use Location Services was completely turned off from the App Switcher.
The setting you just disabled is relevant to the apps still beeing in the background, meaning beeing available through the App Switcher allowing them to refresh or not refresh while there and should not have any impact to completely turned off apps.
Again, I'm glad it works for you but I suspect something else is goin on there.

However, although I use many of the same apps as they, and doubtless countless others, I never, and I do mean, never, see the location services indicator in my phone's status bar when those apps are either closed or not tracking my location.

The only thing that I can contribute to this is that I have disabled the Background App Refresh service, on my phone.

Your owner and myself are investigating in the Apple TV 4th Generation.
Apart from the book I’ve just bought from Mosen Consulting, “Apple TV 4th

reasons we may be upgrading is the lack of security and bug fix updates in
the Apple TV 3rd Generation and of course be up in the world . But
one other somewhat mysterious reason is I’ve heard from the owner that it
can change the source of an HD TV without one ever having to do it
themselves. While we are no Apple engineers, we suspect it could be to do
with our boxes. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thank you.

RE: Looking for an outdoor thermometer and accesible app combo

2016-06-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I only know of the Netatmo Weather Station. It is, however, not really that
difficult to set up, the outdoor unit consists of a round aluminum unit
approx.. 1.5 inches thick and maybe 4 inches tall. If you have a balcony you
could easily put it somewhere on the balcony and if not it would probably be
possible to attach it somehow outside a window. About once a year or maybe a
bit less depending on your climate you would need to get to it in order to
change the batteries.
