Yes, the Apple servers have been struggling, of late. Yesterday, a buddy of

I'm curious whether anyone else is experiencing the problem I've had the last
couple of days when searching for apps in the US Apps Store on my iPhone 6. On
more than a couple of occasions, I've gone to the Apps Store on my iPhone,
executed the search button on the bottom menu, typed the name of the app I'm
looking for in the text box, and completed the process by double tapping the
search button. Then, I get an interminable screen which says "in progress" and
it never completes the search. This has happened on numerous occasions and I'm
wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue.

Thanks.

Re: App to Export Calendar to a Spreadsheet?

2016-08-04 Thread Chris Chaffin
After a google search I found the app x calendar.
I did download the lite version and to my surprise all buttons were labeled and
seems accessible. But please know that I did not go through the entire process
of exporting my calendar.

This app seems pretty cool, and I am considering getting the full paid version.
With that version you can do both, import and export from your ios calendar.
And the paid version also has dropbox support plus many more features. The
paid version is $2.99 in the app store.

Below I have put links for both versions, the free lite version, and the paid
version.

Free lite version:

SA Contacts & xCalendars by Sam Yu
https://appsto.re/us/GXq-9.i

Paid version:

xCalendar - Export/Import Calendar to/from an Excel file by Sam Yu
https://appsto.re/us/iF_2G.i

Hope this has been helpful.

How do I remove a contact, that includes a Facebook contact

2016-08-04 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everybody,

I have a very important question for my boyfriend.

He has a couple of contacts in his iPhone that you would like to remove.
However, he cannot seem to remove them, there is no delete button. Both of
these contacts have Facebook information in his phone.
My boyfriend is not on Facebook, and never has been. We cannot seem to remove
these contacts.

Also, sometimes one of the contacts name comes up, and ask him to enter their
password for Facebook. I've never heard of such a thing.
Why would this be happening? Is there a way to fix it?

Any help with this would be very, very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

I do not know about the app store, but I definitely have noticed it in the
iTunes store. I know they had a problem with the iTunes store a couple weeks
ago, causing it to stay down for like a day, or so. I don't think things are
still quite right. It seems to sort itself out in a little while.

RE: Thermostat confusion.

2016-08-04 Thread Chip Orange
I'm not sure, are you asking about Nest thermostats? If so, they definitely
require sighted help to setup all of these advanced features and schedules; and
since you're often learning as you go, you really need sighted help living
there or near-by, not just the installer.

Once a Nest is all setup, a blind person can adjust the temperature, but that's
it. I was offering information only for those with sighted live-in or close
help.

So, do they all, and I do mean all, work on the latest iPhone app! Can I do it
living alone. I suspect the answer to that question is absolutely no, which
means that unless I have absolutely no choice I don't want to go there.
If it only halfway works, I might as well go back to the old guessing game I
played before the talking thermostat even if I once set it at 60 in the middle
of the night because I was having hot flashes! Late husband woke up saying it
was winter again, LOL and I suggested he might want to check the thermostat
because I just pushed on the down button and held it. He bought the talking
thermostat after that, hours after that in fact.
Ladies of a certain age will understand the hot flashes syndrome.

In addition to this good answer for standard thermostat functions, advanced
thermostats such as the Nest will allow you to program schedules for changing
the temperature based on both time of day and whether you are home or not (the
Nest can tell if you are at home with a built-in motion sensor, and with an app
you put on your phone, along with your home location, so the app indicates if
you are at home or not using location services).

Also, the Nest can manage the humidity level in your house using the
airconditioning, or a multi-speed air handler, or even a separate device
integrated to the airconditioning called a dehumidifier. It can use any or all
of these methods, and each has its own advantages, and the last two have
increased costs. In humid climates like Florida, this can make your house feel
much more comfortable without making it feel too cold.

In very dry climates, the Nest can also manage a separate device integrated
into the HVAC called a humidifier.

It's all of these advanced features which caused us to purchase two Nest
thermostats, even though they are not very accessible for me.

Hi Ari,

You may also want to consider the Wi-Fi thermostat from
www.RadioThermostat.com. They are less expensive than the Nest ones and also
work very well.
As for what a thermostat does, it maintains whatever temperature you set it to
and if you have air conditioning this also means starting your air conditioner
when it gets too hot. Let's say you live in a place that gets pretty hot in the
summer and you have air conditioning, but it also may get cold in the winter
requiring you to heat. If you set your thermostat to 70 Fahrenheit and it is
super hot in the summer, the thermostat will cause your air conditioner to kick
in if it gets a degree or two above 670 degrees, once the temperature in the
house is back down to around 69 or 70 it will turn off. The same happens with
your furnace in the winter. If you set it to 70 degrees and it's only 40
outside, the thermostat maintains the 70 degrees by causing the furnace to
start up if it gets too cold.

that question different when you're talking about air conditioning versus
heating?

I suspect your old talking one may work, although you will need to know if you
have a single or dual stage thermostat, and separate from that will it handle
heat pumps (if that's what you have). I really think you'll need a
professional to install it, and he'll need the installation manual for the
taling thermostat (which you can probably download and print if you no longer
have it).

I have a sighted wife, so once we got all the setup accomplished, I am able to

I Googled this and found the ShareIt app on the app store, here is the
description:

The world’s fastest way to share photos, videos, contacts and TXT, HTML,
WORD,EXCEL,PPT,PDF, etc to another device.
Lenovo SHAREit eliminates the need for cables to wirelessly transfer
information rapidly between devices – either with friends, or to take your
personal content on the go.
• Share everything with other devices – pictures, videos, documents, contacts,
all kinds of files.
• Devices with SHAREit can automatically find each other when in range.
• Transfer HUGE files and videos in seconds… up to 40x faster than Bluetooth®.
• Share without the need for Bluetooth, you don’t pay a cent for network
charges. Devices may wirelessly connect directly.
Site: http://www.UShareIt.com/

There is a download for Windows on that website and I assume you will have to
download and install this on your PC and install the app from the app store on
your iOS device. Maybe the person who posted this has done it and can say more
about how accessible this is and whether you can indeed transfer, for example,
a music file or files to your iphone and have them accessible in the music app.
I have a feeling that maybe you have to use all these files inside the ShareIt
app or maybe some files you can save to or open in other apps, but if Apple
makes it impossible to transfer music files and ringtones via other apps then I
don't see how this app can do it. But I am of course happy to be proven wrong.

Anyone Having a Problem Searching the US Apps Store?

I'm curious whether anyone else is experiencing the problem I've had the
last couple of days when searching for apps in the US Apps Store on my
iPhone 6. On more than a couple of occasions, I've gone to the Apps Store on
my iPhone, executed the search button on the bottom menu, typed the name of
the app I'm looking for in the text box, and completed the process by double
tapping the search button. Then, I get an interminable screen which says "in
progress" and it never completes the search. This has happened on numerous
occasions and I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue.

Thanks.

RE: I phone is now working after update. Here is the complete explanation. Was Re: iPhone seems to have died during update

2016-08-04 Thread Chip Orange
I have also seen charging only USB cables (not lightning though); these came as
a an included cable about 6 inches long for some device which required a USB
charger, and I think the manufacturer saved a few pennies by creating this
charging only cable, which I’m guessing did not include lines for data
transmission. They frustrate me because I sometimes grab them by mistake, and
then find my device won’t transfer data properly, until I recall that I owned a
few of these charging only cables.

Hi Sieghard,
How do you know if the cable you buy is Apple certified. I didn't even know
that there was such a thing as an Apple certified cable. Thank you for the
information. My iPhone is a 5S. I only just now found your message in my junk
email. So I'm sorry for taking a little while to get back to you. Thank you
again. God bless,

First of all I would like to thank all of you for your help and for your
suggestions and opinions. The problem with iTunes was this:
The download kept timing out, so I tunes with state would say problem with
update and want me to start the update again. Finally I just decided to
continue hitting the update button when I was told there was a problem, and
eventually the whole update it downloaded after that the whole process went
smoothly. The person at Apple said that sometimes the downloads do stop, and
that the software is written to pick up where it leaves off when you restart
the download. He said a lot of software is written to take care of things that
happen as it is being used. I reconnected the iPhone and it said extracting
software. Now there was another problem. There appear that there are some
cables that are only for charging purposes, and others that will do the update
as well as the charge. The person that I talk to at Apple said that Bilken is
the only one besides Apple that will do both the charging and the updating.
I also was told that a lot of times we are at the mercy of the Internet so the
update can die, and then as I did, you have to start all over.

In his opinion, he feels that it is more stable to use iTunes and update from
there an over the air with Wi-Fi.
Again thank you all for your help and suggestions and thank you for telling me
how to put the phone in recovery mode. God bless, Wren Langley PS. I'm sharing
all of this information as it might be of some help to someone later. I
couldn't get a ride to the Apple store yesterday, so I'm very grateful that my
phone is working again. I also would like to give credit to God above, because
I prayed a lot and I know that I received help from him. To get my phone
working again.

Hth,

Chip

Sieghard

So, after we move, I'm thinking of getting either one of those thermostats from
talkingthermostats.com or a Nest thermostat. I tried googling this one, but I
don't seem to be getting a proper answer. I don't really understand how
thermostats work. Not mechanically, but practically. What does setting the
temperature of the thermostat to 70 degrees actually mean? And is the answer to
that question different when you're talking about air conditioning versus
heating?

Thanks,

2016-08-04 Thread Chip Orange
I am not answering the question you asked, but I want to say that as a blind
person, you'll need quite a bit of sighted help in order to use the Nest
thermostat. There are many of its functions which are not accessible.

I have a sighted wife, so once we got all the setup accomplished, I am able to
check and modify the temperature for the Nest via its IOS app or via an Echo
and a skill, but I cannot program schedules, set advanced features, or even
deal with error messages which will only appear on the Nest thermostat itself.

Good luck,

Chip

servers. You have to turn dictation off to do that. So just wanted to
pass this along in case anyone else ever has this issue.

RE: a little broken siri tip for you all

2016-08-04 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
You can go into the Settings, then into General and then into Siri in order to
turn her/him off or on.

The dictation is found in Settings, General and then in Keyboard. I am
guessing that if you turn this off, the dictation key on the keyboard will be
hidden.

Hope this helps!

Could you explain what it means to turn dictation off? Is this a Siri command,
or do you do it via settings? The only dictation I've used is when you double
finger double tap to enter some text via dictation.

Thanks,

Chip

Subject: a little broken siri tip for you all

So earlier my Siri quit working. I got the chimes, but no results for
anything including voice or text on the screen. This was driving me
crazy because I knew my mic was working and the phone was hearing what I
was saying. I turned Siri on and off and even did a soft reset and
several reboots using the power off button. Finally I decided to try one
last thing which fixed the problem. I turned both Siri and dictation off
and back on. This fixed the problem. I even had a highly inteligent
member of this group working with me to help track this issue down.
We're both thinking technical and using lots of brain power trying to
fix it, however it was right there in front of us all along. The only
reason I thought to try turning off dictation is because it said that
turning Siri off wouldn't delete the information stored on Apple's
servers. You have to turn dictation off to do that. So just wanted to

looking for accessible IStick for IPhone

2016-08-04 Thread Chip Orange
Hi All,

I'm looking for a recommendation for one of the USB drives which comes with
a lightning connector and app designed to be accessible on an Iphone and
standard USB.

The previous messages I've found on this group mentioned a brand/model
named Ibridge, but said it wasn't entirely accessible, but it would be soon.

Can anyone say if it is accessible now, or if there is a brand/model which
is accessible?

Thanks.

Subject: New free GPS

Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago, someone was asking here about a GPS app that works with
Google maps. At the time I stated that there would be one available in Canada
only in a few weeks. Well, the few weeks are here and it is available. The
fact is that it does work also outside of Canada in a limited way for now.
That will shortly be improved as you will see in a copy of the message the
McGill university professor sent me this morning. It is being developed by
engeneering students at the university. That is why it is free. Since I have
been a tester for the students since the beginning of this project, I would
welcome your comments so I can pass them on. The app is called Autour which is
the French word for Around. To find the app in the app store, typing Autour is
not enough as that word brings up too many results. If you type in McGill
university Autour it will be the first result.

There is a short tutorial when you install it and you can go to the web site
for more instructions.

In radar mode, a click constantly goes around 360 º indicating the position of
what is being announced while the beam mode is meant to be used when stopped
and pointing your phone in different directions to find out exactly where poi’s
are located. This is used mostly when examining a given area more closely.
The app is designed to be used with an open ear headset or in the hand. Of
course, when using in the hand, you don’t get the same pin point location in
the radar mode. It works best in a neck pouch with the phone upside down and
the screen away from your chest. When lifted horizontally, the app
automatically goes into beam mode.

Looking forward to hearing your comments

Hi Ron,

In fact, Autour is generally not intended to be usable in a vehicle at present,
because we shut down data requests whenever the GPS determines that you are
moving too quickly. This is to avoid overuse of your data plan. However, we
are working on design modifications to make this possible, such that Autour
could provide the most important information relevant for this use case, such
as periodic intersection information.

As for outside of Canada, yes, it works, but only with a limited subset of
data. We are planning to expand this in the near future with additional
database imports.

RE: Question for a friend, regarding Gmail and password issues

2016-08-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Terri,

You definitely want to ignore and dlete these emails asking you to change your
Wallmart password. One of my employees has also been getting these even though
we are in Canada where the website is Walmart.ca and not wallmart.com. They are
attempts to get people to click on the links, you'll be directed to some
website that may look like Wallmart but which is not, then you enter your user
name and password or change your password and at that point you have shared
your login credentials with whoever is behind the scam and they can now login
and place orders.

Never click on anything unless you know you have just deliverately requested an
email reset from some company, but then you do that and the email for it
usually arrives in seconds; anything you receive without asking for it goes
into the Trash. The same applies to unsolicited phone calls especially those
where some guy claims he is from Microsoft and that they have identified a
threat to your computer and you have to give them access to your computer right
now so they can fix it. I always wonder how naive people can be to fall for
stuff like that, but I guess often older people or people who just have no
interest in learning about technology do fall for it often enough.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hello, Rob

This is what I thought as well. But my friend doesn't know a lot about
technology. So he tells me the messages or the text, are coming from Google.
But I never thought that would happen like that.

I know personally right now, I am getting emails that appeared to be from
Walmart, and they are giving me codes and telling me to change my password or
saying that it is easy to change my password. Then it says if you did not
request this change go to help. This is happened to me twice now in the last
few days.
So something is definitely going on somewhere. I just don't have enough
knowledge to know what it is, or what to do about it. Though I do have more
knowledge than my friend. We don't hear in account, we don't hear any accounts
actually. So I find it odd that we are both having some sort of issues like
this.

If you have any more suggestions, that would be very much appreciated. It seems
like if he doesn't change his password, he stops getting email on his phone.
His phone is the only thing he has to get email on.
And that was supposed to be, we do not share any accounts.

Thank you very much.

Terri

H, what about Look Tel Recognizer? Is it going to be updated?
What I would like to see in this app is to be able to import images from the
Gallery and not have to shoot them manually.

So, Aug 3 sees an update to the seemingly dormant Money Reader, its first
update since 2014, and it's no longer called the LookTel Money Reader when you
click on the link:
  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/looktel-money-reader/id417476558?mt=8
It's now called the NantMobile Money Reader.
I know there had been talk over the past few months of how it was outdated
now with some currencies. It'd be interesting to see if that's still true, or
if that's all fixed now. The LookTel site doesn't yet acknowledge the update.
From the app store entry link given above:

Re: Question for a friend, regarding Gmail and password issues

2016-08-04 Thread Terri Stimmel

Terri

Re: looking for a carb counting app

2016-08-04 Thread MamaPeach
Have you noticed with My Fitness Pal that it is having a lot of glitches
lately? I put my food in for the day, but some of it disappears for no reason.
Then my daily calorie goal changes from 1650 to 1520 for no reason and then
changes back out of the blue. I can read some things on the Diary Tab, but when
I read the same things on the Home tab, they do not match. I love the app, but
one of the recent updates seems to have screwed things up a bit. This is why I
am always so leary to take the updates. I have written the developer but only
received an automated response saying they would get back with me within 48 to
72 hours, but I haven’t heard a thing from them about the issues I have been
having.

So just wanted to
pass this along in case anyone else ever has this issue.

VCF QR Codes

2016-08-04 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
I asked this some time ago but it was in some busy thread and
didn't find the answer or I have missed it.
I'm starting a new one so maybe I'll get it more clear this time.
What is the easiest way to import contact data to Contacts app
using QR code? there are tons of VCF cards in QR codes these days
and I never find a solutions to import them directly to my
  contacts using cammera.
As I know, Contacts app doesn't have QR code support so I guess I
should use some 3rd party app to scan such contacts and I would
like to hear your recommendations or maybe some iOS secret way to
  do this.
Thanks for your answers!

Subject: Question for a friend, regarding Gmail and password issues

Hello everybody,
Mulein have a question for a friend. I'm hoping someone might have some ideas
as to what could be going on.
My friend is not blind. He uses an iPhone 6s, with the latest update. He has a
GL account.
For the last week or so, he keeps getting a text message saying he needs to
change his password, and he gets a code he is supposed
to type in.
He types this code in the change password area. Eclipse telling him that he
needs to change his password, because there is a
problem. But from what he can tell me, it does not tell him what the issue is.
We were wondering if somebody could be trying to get
into his account?

What could be going on?
Does anyone have any ideas?

Any thoughts, or suggestions, would be very much appreciated!

Thank you,

Terri
