No, Anna is correct. There is a specific JAWS setting called Dot Firmness.
It isn't there in VoiceOver Braille settings on iPhone/i-devices. It has

RE: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

2016-10-25 Thread Alan Lemly
Many thanks to those who replied to this thread. I'm convinced that glass is
the way to go and just ordered the iPhone 7 6S 6 Screen Protector Glass, amFilm
iPhone 7 Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Apple iPhone 7, iPhone 6S, iPhone
6 2016, 2015 (2-Pack) from Amazon. This 2-pack showed a retail price of $29.99
but Amazon had it on sale for $7.99. It listed as a bestseller and had a
customer rating of 4.3 out of 5 starts. It is 0.33mm thick.

This is a very reasonable price for a tempered glass screen protector 2-pack
and I even got free shipping with Amazon Prime.

Subject: Re: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

Like others, I have used standard film protector on my 4S and as I got 6S Plus
I went for the tempered glass protector. I can't say is there a difference or
not because I didn't use 3D touch with film protector or without it but from my
point of view, it works correctly, there are no latencies and it is sensitive
enough for smooth operation.

Regarding the quality of tempered glass protectors it can vary. I saw
protectors about 3 or 4 mm thick and I saw thin protectors, about 2 mm. The
thickness of the protector can be seen around the Home button. I believe
thicker protectors are more expensive and hopefuly better. I had experienced
two protectors in about a year. My first thicker protector broke when I
accidentally pushed the phone from the fridge and it bumped onto kitchen tiles.
This one was about 15 bucks in the stores. The second one I got for about 10
bucks in store and it is thiner and works for now. It misses a tiny part on the
top center but it is almost invisible and can be treated as part of the design.
I can't be sure bu I suspect with the second protector my phone became less
sensitive in the corners while performing double tap. I can't be sure so I
won't put the blame on the protector.

You also need to pay attentiion is the protector properly fixed to the screen.
It is not as flexible as the film protectors and if it doesn't lay well on the
surface you could experience sensitivity glitches.

Hello List,

I've only ever used a film screen protector on the two iPhones I've owned. I'm
starting to look at accessories for the iPhone 7 which I'm planning to get at
the beginning of February and wanted to get opinions from those who have used
glass screen protectors on their iPhones.

I've always considered glass screen protectors to be more than I needed with
the care I take with my iPhone and have never been fully convinced that they
don't interfere with the touch sensitivity of the iPhone. However, I don't want
to make assumptions about such things and would prefer to get comments from
those on the list who actually use a glass screen protector with their iDevice.
I'm particularly interested in the opinions of those who have them with models
6S and higher that have 3D Touch capability and if they have noticed any affect
the glass screen protector has on 3D Touch efficacy.

I see on Amazon a very wide range of prices of glass screen protectors from $6
up and one from Tech21 who makes the case I use which goes for about $35 for
the iPhone 7. This is quite a range and I'm having a hard time reconciling the
differences which account for such a range. I'd love to hear from anyone who
has recommendations about a specific glass screen protector model and about
what it costs.

Thanks in advance for any comments you can provide.

Hey all,

I am a long time owner of the Amazon Echo and was very excited to have my new
Dot arrive today. Unfortunately the accessibility of the Alexa app has gone
backwards. I could not set up my Dot in the app, as I could not get the connect
to wifi part to work and VO crashed multiple times when trying to do so. I also
deleted the Alexxa app and reinstalled it thinking there might have been a bug
on my end. No luck. Do not even bother trying to set up the Dot on the mac as
all wifi networks are read as one continuous list and you can't select your
wifi network. What finally worked setting the Dot up was doing it in Chrome on
the mac as the Amazon set up page read all wifi networks as it should be
different items. Anyway just wanted to get this out there as I spent hours
trying to get the Dot up and running. It seems to be connected and working fine
now just waiting it to reboot as I changed the wake word and thought this might
be helpful to someone.

Re: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

2016-10-25 Thread Gordan Radić

Like others, I have used standard film protector on my 4S and as
I got 6S Plus I went for the tempered glass protector. I can't say
is there a difference or not because I didn't use 3D touch with
film protector or without it but from my point of view, it works
correctly, there are no latencies and it is sensitive enough for
  smooth operation.
Regarding the quality of tempered glass protectors it can vary. I
saw protectors about 3 or 4 mm thick and I saw thin protectors,
about 2 mm. The thickness of the protector can be seen around the
Home button. I believe thicker protectors are more expensive and
hopefuly better. I had experienced two protectors in about a year.
My first thicker protector broke when I accidentally pushed the
phone from the fridge and it bumped onto kitchen tiles. This one
was about 15 bucks in the stores. The second one I got for about
10 bucks in store and it is thiner and works for now. It misses a
tiny part on the top center but it is almost invisible and can be
treated as part of the design. I can't be sure bu I suspect with
the second protector my phone became less sensitive in the corners
while performing double tap. I can't be sure so I won't put the
  blame on the protector.
You also need to pay attentiion is the protector properly fixed
to the screen. It is not as flexible as the film protectors and if
it doesn't lay well on the surface you could experience
  sensitivity glitches.

Hello
List,

I've
only ever used a film screen protector on the two iPhones
I've owned. I'm starting to look at accessories for the
iPhone 7 which I'm planning to get at the beginning of
February and wanted to get opinions from those who have used
glass screen protectors on their iPhones.

I've
always considered glass screen protectors to be more than I
needed with the care I take with my iPhone and have never
been fully convinced that they don't interfere with the
touch sensitivity of the iPhone. However, I don't want to
make assumptions about such things and would prefer to get
comments from those on the list who actually use a glass
screen protector with their iDevice. I'm particularly
interested in the opinions of those who have them with
models 6S and higher that have 3D Touch capability and if
they have noticed any affect the glass screen protector has
on 3D Touch efficacy.

I
see on Amazon a very wide range of prices of glass screen
protectors from $6 up and one from Tech21 who makes the case
I use which goes for about $35 for the iPhone 7. This is
quite a range and I'm having a hard time reconciling the
differences which account for such a range. I'd love to hear
from anyone who has recommendations about a specific glass
screen protector model and about what it costs.

Thanks
in advance for any comments you can provide.

They are indeed earplugs. The instructions do state that you may experience
better sound with your ears plugged in a safe environment. Mainly though,
they include them so people can have proof that they are hearing through
their bones and not their ears.

The buttons may vary from different models but I can tell you what they do
on the Trekz Titaniums. The triangular button on the left will do several
things. It can be held in and will say voice dial but on iOS, it will
activate Siri. The two buttons on the right set the volume up or down but
only when sound is playing. Otherwise, they announce the battery level. The
volume up button nearest the right earphone will also act as a power button.
Hold it in for a long press to turn on or off the headset. There's a way to
reset the headphones also but I can't remember it. Hope that helps. Enjoy
the headset. It's not the best for recording or for high quality listening
but they're great for when you're out and about needing your ears free and
not caring so much for sound quality.

So we just got ours today and were playing with them. Are these ear plugs
that come with them? If so, why? Also is there a way to get better sound
out of the mic? Still working with the two buttons on the side to figure
out what all they do. We got them paired to the iPhone right away with no
trouble. But we did try a face time call and it sounds like you're inside

RE: Alexxa App

2016-10-25 Thread Chip Orange
I too could not setup the wifi portion of the Echo Dot using the Alexa app, and
finally had to get sighted help to do this (I don't have a mac to fallback to).

I've been complaining to Amazon for several months (being an original Echo
owner) about a list of accessibility issues with the Alwxa app, and with the
Alexa web page when used via the Internet Explorer Windows browser; they have
done absolutely nothing at all to fix any of the problems. They are the least
responsive large company I have yet come across as regards accessibility issues.

Subject: Alexxa App

Re: VoiceOver and 3D touch?

2016-10-25 Thread Wayne Merritt
Press harder and you will hear a pop sound. That is the context menu
which has popped up. If you press too hard, the phone may interpret it
as a double tap and the app will open. That has happened to me a
number of times. It takes practice.

Good luck,

Re: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

2016-10-25 Thread regina alvarado

I have used glass screen protectors for 2 years now. In my opinion they are
great. The 3 d touch is not changed with the way they are put on. They are
extremely thin. It is a smoother texture. Not only that, but I dropped my phone
on cement, never to be repeated if I have anything to say about it, and when I
checked about my insurance it was the screen protector that shattered in one
corner but the phone glass was totally intact. All that was done was to replace
my screen protector. I would get one from Amazon, however, as in the stores
they are very expensive. I think mine cost about 10 dollars on Amazon.

Hi everyone I have great news I have had a friend who helped me solve the
dice world quieter dice problem.

You need to turn off Audio Ducking. I will share where to find this if you
want to try it.

You can open accessibility settings first.

You then open voice over settings

You then go to audio settings and open it. It is on my phone just below
braille.

You then go down to audio ducking and turn it off.

I have my sounds back hoping this helps others get there's back also. Mine
were quieter and now there what they were before the update.

I am using IOS Ten with a phone and it is the SE phone.

Please share if this helps you as if it does I would like to share it with
the developers so they can help others with the sounds to.

RE: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

2016-10-25 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Alan,

I have a glass screen protector on my iPhone 6S and I’m very happy with it. I’m
afraid I don’t remember the brand, as it was part of my Christmas present from
my brother. I know that it was a reputable brand which I had heard of, and in
the medium price range.

I do use 3D Touch and it works fine for me. I didn’t do a “before and after”
comparison, as I had only had the phone for a couple of days when the protector
was applied and I hadn’t experimented with 3D Touch at that stage. I haven’t
noticed any lack of screen sensitivity or responsiveness on my 6S compared to
previous iPhones, on which I used film screen protectors. I have a light touch,
so I think I would soon have become frustrated with an unresponsive screen.

HTH,

Nicky

Subject: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

Re: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

2016-10-25 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Alan,
I have used a glass screen protector on an iPhone 5s, 6S, and now my 7+. With
regard to 3D Touch, I don't see any difference. And frankly, I like the way the
glass feels as opposed to the film ones. My finger seems to slide over the
screen more smoothly than it does with the film. Unfortunately, I don't
remember who made the various screen protectors I have, but I can tell you that
none of them was very expensive, like 10 bucks or less. I also have a cheap
screen protector made out of glass on a Google Nexus six. That doesn't have the
3D Touch of course, but the screen protector has worked well. I wouldn't worry
about it. Find one that has good reviews on Amazon that isn't very expensive
and go for it. There is no reason to pay 30 or $35 for a glass screen protector.

Re: after shokz bone conduction head phones

2016-10-25 Thread Michael Feir
They are indeed earplugs. The instructions do state that you may experience
better sound with your ears plugged in a safe environment. Mainly though, they
include them so people can have proof that they are hearing through their bones
and not their ears.

The buttons may vary from different models but I can tell you what they do on
the Trekz Titaniums. The triangular button on the left will do several things.
It can be held in and will say voice dial but on iOS, it will activate Siri.
The two buttons on the right set the volume up or down but only when sound is
playing. Otherwise, they announce the battery level. The volume up button
nearest the right earphone will also act as a power button. Hold it in for a
long press to turn on or off the headset. There's a way to reset the headphones
also but I can't remember it. Hope that helps. Enjoy the headset. It's not the
best for recording or for high quality listening but they're great for when
you're out and about needing your ears free and not caring so much for sound
quality.

So we just got ours today and were playing with them. Are these ear plugs that
come with them? If so, why? Also is there a way to get better sound out of the
mic? Still working with the two buttons on the side to figure out what all they
do. We got them paired to the iPhone right away with no trouble. But we did try
a face time call and it sounds like you're inside a tin can.

So we just got ours today and were playing with them. Are these ear
plugs that come with them? If so, why? Also is there a way to get better
sound out of the mic? Still working with the two buttons on the side to
figure out what all they do. We got them paired to the iPhone right away
with no trouble. But we did try a face time call and it sounds like
you're inside a tin can.

any of the tabs. I have taken photos, but I deleted those. I don't have
iCloud backup turned on since that was all disabled when I did the
incripted backup through iTunes. Any idea where to find these phots so I
can free up a little space? I'm not hurting for space, but every little
bit helps especially if it's not being used.

Hi Sieghard,
Are you on Twitter? If so,I have some suggestions. Carbon-copying Apple
Accessibility was definitely a good idea, but maybe you could post your
complaint to the Applevis forum so that others are aware of the issue. When you
know that your complaint is up on Applevis, send out a tweet with a link to
your post in the Applevis forum, and send a direct message (with the same link
to Applevis) via Twitter to Apple Support, which is on Twitter. I know they're
on Twitter because I follow them and see their tweets every now and again.
Putting the complaint up on Twitter may draw more attention to the situation.

Subject: Inaccessible Apple survey, sometimes I really wonder what the heck
they are thinking or if they indeed are thinking

Hello Listers and Apple Accessibility team (or maybe I should say Apple
Inaccessibility Team),,

I recently purchased an Apple Watch and already pointed out that the usually
very accessible Apple Store app did not allow me to order the watch. No matter
what I tried, the app wanted to send the watch to the nearest Apple Store
which, as I am in Calgary right now, was the Apple Store at Market Mall. No
matter what I did I could not figure out how to make it send it to my home
address. Eventually I ordered it online using my Windows laptop which was
relatively straight forward and painless. Apart from the fact that during the
order process I was told that it would ship in 3 to 4 weeks where in reality it
shipped from China the next day everything was fine.
A couple of days later I received an email asking for my feedback regarding the
ordering process. I thought this would be a good chance for me to give really
low scores and, if a comment field existed, to describe how I could not order
the watch using the Apple Store app because of the reason described above. I
clicked on the link for the survey, the first screen was just some information
and I activated the “Next” link.
On the following page were 3 questions regarding how satisfied I was with the
ordering process, whether I would order again from the apple online store and
whether I would recommend the Apple online store to a friend. Each answer had
the usual “strongly disagree”, to “strongly agree” or whatever the exact
wording was. Jaws also read numbers from 1 to 5, but there were no checkboxes
or radio buttons. At first I thought that this probably is fine, I just click
on the number I want and while it didn’t read it as a radio button, checkbox or
link I thought it would work. I did so for all three questions and clicked
next. Nothing happened and when I checked back I saw something to the effect of
“You must have forgotten to complete one of the questions, please review your
response”. No matter what I did I could apparently not rank my responses and
continue to the next step. I tried this with Jaws using Internet Explorer, Jaws
using Firefox and also with Safari and Voiceover on my iPhone, all with the
same result.
In order to save me the time to type this again I am CC’ing Apple Accessibility
on this since I think it is just a joke and complete craziness that Apple
apparently is not capable of creating a survey which is fully accessible. There
is nothing simpler than to create an accessible survey and for a company which
basically invented the concept of main stream accessibility to not make sure
their surveys can be completed by visually impaired users is beyond my
comprehension. I’d love to hear how Tim Cook would reply to this if I could
tell him about this directly. In the meantime I guess I’ll probably just ask a
sighted person to help me complete this survey and I will give the lowest
ranking possible on

So I'm stuck with the 16 gig SE until I get the iPhone 7. I looked in
storage and it shows that I have 5 photos using 23 megs in photo
library. However when I open the photos app, there's nothing there under
any of the tabs. I have taken photos, but I deleted those. I don't have
iCloud backup turned on since that was all disabled when I did the
incripted backup through iTunes. Any idea where to find these phots so I
can free up a little space? I'm not hurting for space, but every little
bit helps especially if it's not being used.

Re: Inaccessible Apple survey, sometimes I really wonder what the heck they are thinking or if they indeed are thinking

2016-10-25 Thread Lois Butterfield
Hi,

I have had this same issue with the last several surveys I have attempted to
fill out. Usually, I will get some distance into it before I hit a section
where there are no links, boxes, or buttons. It is definitely a trend.

I’m glad you are able and willing in this case to write Apple another way to
let them know.

Best regards,
Lois

In the meantime I guess I’ll probably just ask a
sighted person to help me complete this survey and I will give the lowest
ranking possible on each question and hope there is a comment field where I can
express my feelings about such a stupid oversight.

Regards,

Sieghard

Forwarding messages via whatsapp

2016-10-25 Thread turab chimthanawala
Hello guys
I often struggle to forward messages via whatsapp especially group
chats. I use the double tap and hold gesture. But it often does not
work, in the sense that voice over continually keeps reading the
message rather than the dialogue box containing Reply , Forward etc.
options appearing. Also I have tried using the triple tap gesture but
to no avail.
Would like to know any other effective method.

Hello everybody,

Thank you all for the help with my Dice World issue. I had no clue this
was a bug, as I hadn't ever had it happen before. So I thought it was
something to do with updating the games.

Now all is fine, after restarting my phone.

Even in iOS 10.1 the iBook VoiceOver Continuous Reading Bug Continues

2016-10-25 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

A while ago I posted to the groups describing what I consider to be an iBook
VoiceOver continuous reading bug given that the behavior did not occur in
previous versions of iOS.

After posting, a couple of iOS beta testers reported that this issue had
been resolved in iOS 10.1.

Well, as you can guess, I updated to iOS 10.1 and the bug, in my opinion,
persists.

I am going to paste in a modified copy of my previous post on this and see
if any of you can reproduce it in iOS 10.1.

[ORIGINAL TEXT]
My preferred method for reading iOS iBook titles is to use the two-finger,
swipe-down VoiceOver gesture, in order to initiate continuous reading of the
text. Please note that I am not referring to the Speak Screen accessibility
feature.

In short, my display is set to automatically lock after 30 seconds. In the
previous versions of IOS, performing a 2-finger swipe down, in an iBook
title, would suspend the auto-lock and allow for continuous reading of the
text. This does not appear to be the case, any longer.

This is to say, in certain titles, such as those containing imbedded
hyperlinks, the auto-lock engages, cancelling the continuous reading mode.

I first discovered this, last night, while reading the Apple TV User Guide.
The same phenomenon occurred when I tested my hypothesis with the iPhone
User Guide for iOS 10 and iPhone User Guide for iOS 9.3.

At first, I thought it was some kind of issue with titles produced by Apple
but I tested a recently published (non Apple) title, that has a web link
imbedded in the text, and, just as with the Apple manuals, after less than 1
minute, the screen locked and reading ceased.

It should be noted, that the hyperlinks that exist in the Table of Contents,
used to jump to a specific area, does not cause interruption to the
continuous reading feature. I say this because titles in my Library,
containing only such links, read as expected.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.
>From Settings/General/Display and Brightness, set Auto Lock to 30 seconds.

2.
In iBook, open the Apple TV User Guide and, from the table of contents,
select Home Sharing; or, open the iPhone User Guide for iOS 10 and, from the
table of contents, select Basics.

3.
Once the desired page is displayed, perform the two-finger swipe-down
VoiceOver gesture to initiate continuous reading.

As I said, in my testing, each time either an imbedded hyperlink or heading
is encountered, a short time later, the screen will lock and reading will
stop.

Please confirm if this occurs during your testing.

I would like to note that, this problem does not occur when using the Speak
Screen accessibility feature. While certainly useful in some instances, the
Speak Screen feature is not my preferred method for reading iBook titles.

Mark
