Re: Changing Voice Over voice

2017-01-06 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
When you downloaded these voices, did you go through settings, general,
accessibility and speech and download them that way? If so, there's your
problem. In order to make newly downloaded voices work with Voiceover, you have
to go into settings, general, accessibility, Voiceover then speech. It sounds
like you want to change your default Voiceover voice and not use languages in
the rotor so change the default setting. Find the voice you want and you're all
set. If you need any additional help, let me know and I can try to help you
through Skype if you want.

Followup on Issue with Customized Pronunciations in iOS 10.2

2017-01-06 Thread Alan Lemly
I'm having no success in getting any words entered correctly in customized
pronunciations at Settings, General, Accessibility, Voiceover, Speech,
Pronunciations, not just the issue with the word adamant I previously
reported.

Would others running iOS 10.2 please try adding a customized pronunciation
and report back your results? I'm using an iPhone 7.

Thanks.

Can You Duplicate My Issue Customizing the Voiceover Pronunciations

2017-01-06 Thread Alan Lemly
Hello list,

I have an iPhone 7 running iOS 10.2 and I'm having a very strange issue
adding a word to my customized pronunciations. I believe this is the first
time I've added a word since installing iOS 10.2 so I'm curious if others
can duplicate it before reporting it.

I typed a text message tonight containing the word adamant and noticed that
Voiceover pronounced it with emphasis on the last syllable and with a
pronounced mant sound as opposed to a mint sound which I prefer. I went into
Settings, General, Accessibility, Voiceover, Speech, and Pronunciations and
added adamant using the add button in the upper right corner. I typed in the
word using the on-screen keyboard just as it's spelled above and then I
dictated the replacement pronunciation substitution. I had a very difficult
time getting it to place my dictated substitution in the right field which I
don't recall being an issue before. If I didn't double tap the substitution
field before double tapping the dictate button, I would end up with extra
characters in the field for the entered word and adamant would be listed
more than once including the pronunciation symbols. I don't ever recall this
being an issue with past versions of iOS 10 but I finally figured out to
double tap in the substitution field before double tapping the dictate
button. I finally was able to get adamant entered in my customized
pronunciations and played it back successfully but when I went to my text
message where I had used it, the message spoke as if adamant wasn't in it.
The word was totally ignored. When I deleted adamant from my customized
pronunciations, the text message spoke it again but with the incorrect
pronunciation I started with.

This feels like a bug to me and I'm wondering if anyone else can duplicate
it. I know it's more than a little tedious to try this but I'm very curious
if others can duplicate it because I depend on being able to customized
pronunciations and want this to work correctly.

Thanks for trying to duplicate this issue and reporting back.

Re: Apple watch and Air Pods

2017-01-06 Thread Deb Lewis
Well I can report that I have gotten both the phone and Voiceover to
come through the watch. So they can do it. But it's really hard to get
it connected and harder still to keep it that way. I think though that
I can rule out the notion that my specific unit is defective or that
Apple doesn't support this despite what it says. So I may make more
progress now. Definitely not acceptable even as a new product but
we'll keep trying now that it has worked once, sort of.

The Native iOS Maps App Provides Excellent Intersection Announcements, But .

2017-01-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I was just experimenting with the native iOS Maps app today and, as many of
you already know, if one sets the tracking feature to, "On+Heading", then
places VoiceOver focus on the, "My Location", area of the screen, as one
travels down a road, cross street names and intersection info is quite
accurately announced.

In fact, I enjoy this feature so much so that I am beginning to use the Maps
app instead of Seeing Eye GPS or Nearby Explorer, when merely traveling down
a street, with no particular destination in mind.

There is, however, kind of a drawback in using the Maps app for intersection
announcements, as least as far as I am concerned; said drawback being that,
in addition to accurately providing intersection information, such as the
names of cross streets, Maps also continuously announces points-of-interests
as they are passed. For me, this is too much information, especially when
traveling in a vehicle as the announcements become somewhat cluttered. My
personal preference would be to have intersection/cross street
announcements, only.

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable POI announcements in Maps?

If POI announcements could be disabled, in the scenario I have described
above, then the native iOS Maps app could quite easily make it possible for
those of us who are visually challenged to enjoy basic GPS navigation
without having to incur additional cost by purchasing third-party GPS
navigation solutions.

I hope that those of you who participate in the iOS beta program will pass
this topic and suggestion along to Apple developers.

Thank you,

Mark

RE: Withings "Hair Coach" the world's first intelligent and connected hair brush - what will be next?

2017-01-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Well, at that price especially if that is $300 US they probably won’t sell too
many of them, that would be at least $400 or $420 Canadian. I guess we’ll see
what it will be, somehow I can’t seem them making it this expensive given the
pricing on all their other devices and nowhere on the Withings website or in
the announcement email I received do they hint at the price. All they say is
that it is coming out next fall so it will be some time anyways.

Sieghart, I saw this on a TV show last night. The person demonstrating it said
it would be 300 dollars. Not something I will invest in any time soon! The way
I understand it, the brush will tell you how to brush your hair depending on
what you do with it, if hair is not in place as you brush?

I found that AirPods only work with Apple Watch for music playback, but not
for phone calls or VoiceOver.
It may be "seemless switching", but it's still manual, and
rquires switching via iOS 10 control center, or macOS Sierra audio output
or bluetooth devices.

Re: Seeking ways to watch Netflicks on a TV?

2017-01-06 Thread Kevin Chao
ChromeCast is $35 and works great for this exact use case.
Netflix supports casting from iOS app to ChromeCast. It's cool! You'll be
able to use your iOS device as a guide and remote and then send Netflix
content to ChromeCast-enabled TV to watch.

You are welcome for posting it! Thank you for passing it along. The more people
who can file accurate bug reports on this, the better chance we have of it
getting fixed. Also, for those runing Focus, Papimeir, or Handitech displays
haanding trouble on 10.2, Apple is advising people who wish to try to install
the latest beta of 10.2.1 which is available to the public.

Take care,

Re: Withings "Hair Coach" the world's first intelligent and connected hair brush - what will be next?

2017-01-06 Thread regina alvarado

Sieghart, I saw this on a TV show last night. The person demonstrating it said
it would be 300 dollars. Not something I will invest in any time soon! The way
I understand it, the brush will tell you how to brush your hair depending on
what you do with it, if hair is not in place as you brush?

Hi,

I had this issue for a while, but syncing my phone with iTunes seems to have

I hope that helps.

Re: Seeking ways to watch Netflicks on a TV?

2017-01-06 Thread Mary Otten
The Chromecast itself isn't accessible or in accessible. You just set it up
using the Google Home app, which is available on android or iOS and is
accessible. Once you have set up your Chromecast, you simply find the "cast"
button in the app you want to send it to your TV via the chrome cast. At least,
that's how the audio one worked for me. I expect the regular Chromecast the
video one, is similar. You can "cast" the entire screen, rather than doing it
from the app, if you are using an android device. But that sends your screen
reader to the TV as well, which you may not want. At least that is my
experience again with the audio Chromecast.

Re: Getting a document off my iPhone and on to my laptop

2017-01-06 Thread Kimber Gardner
I use Word for iOS, but that's mainly because I want to be able to
work on documents both on my phone and my laptop. Also, if you create
a document on the phone, you do have the option of saving it on the
phone after which you can send it to the cloud. I suppose this is for
occasions when you might not have a data connection.

Word for iOS is surprisingly feature-rich, though I can't speak to how
easy all these features are to use with VO. But for basic document
creation, I find Word quite usable on the phone.

adn Vfoiceover reads it. However, yes I herd this problem form many people.
There are two ways i find sending a FB messenger. The first way is if you use
the screen keyboard, you can find the send button above the letterP. So since
your button is not lable it wil say button, and just doubel tap on it. And you
can also lable the button by double tap and hold, and voice over say Lable or
something like that. Also, other say that the color of the screen change, so
that is why Voiceover is not reading the send button and other buttons. So your
screen color for messenger got change and you can tell that to facebook. I'm
not experiencing that problem with my FB messenger. And another way that I use
a lot is to type with a Bluetooth keyboard, and type your emssage and then pess
enter key adn that wil send th emessage. Hope this helps! I look forward in
hearing form you soon. Thanks and God bless!

RE: Comprehensive list of Jaws-Based and ITunes-based Shortcut Keys Was: Viewing Apps in iTunes with Jaws solved

2017-01-06 Thread Terrie Terlau
Hello Sieghard and Anna,

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I use ITunes for backing up and
restoring my phone and for moving files from my PC to various phone apps. I do
not use it for music as most people do. I am totally lost when I open ITunes. I
am pretty good at figuring out programs, but I have always had trouble with
ITunes.

Thanks for any ideas you may have.

If either of you were willing, I would pay you for some SKYPE tutoring.

Thanks again.

Hi Terry,

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with iTunes? I rarely use a lot more
than F6, the tab key, Control+F to get me into the search box (I often use this
more as a reference point from where I use F6 or tab) and then of course Enter
or Spacebar to play/pause or check/uncheck items if I am selecting apps or
ringtones I want to sync. Of course there are also the menus which are
accessible with the Alt key and the arrow keys.

Like I said, let us know more about what you want to do so we can give you
better advice.

Regards,

Sieghard

Larry, I think you need to bring up the column browser. When I make the column
browser go away and put focus on the album list, I had to move through it by
using all four arrow keys, not just the up and down arrows. I think this is
grid view. I think you'll need to have the sidebar showing, then you can use
control+shift+b to bring up the column browser. Once you've done that, tab to
the thing that your screen reader will announce as "Library Sidebar Treeview,"
and press down arrow until you come to songs. Then you can tab and see all your
artists in one list, your albums in another, and your songs in a third. Your
view options should now be visible, and you can choose what lists (or columns,
as they appear on the screen) are displayed. You can find these options in the
column browser submenu, in the view menu. The view options dialogue is not to
customize what columns appear in the column browser, but rather what
information appears on each line that corresponds to a different item in your
different lists, track, artist, name, beats per minute, etc.. I hope this makes
sense, and that it helps you get your iTunes view into a much better experience
for screen reader users, in my opinion. I was stuck in grid view for quite a
while, but eventually, and Apple representative sorted me out.

Thanks,

Ari

Larry,

Did you tab until you are on the Library button/folder tab before pressing ctrl
+ j? When I ctrl + j after placing focus on the library tab after selecting
music with ctrl + 1 as the media displayed, tabbing once after that ctrl + j
places me in the view options dialog. This dialog doesn't have a view choice
between list and grid but it does have a sort by drop-down box where you can
select from among album, artist, etc. and whether you want ascending or
descending order. There are also several tickboxes where you can select which
music columns to display.

I hope this helps.

I believe that there might be HDMI to lightning, but to be honest, the
easiest and most inexpensive method of streaming Netflix to your TV

I have an app called Audio Memos. I recorded a lot of band rehearsals and

shows the same amount. How can I remove the data with itunes with the phone
connected to my PC without having to delete the app from my phone.

Hi Tara,

All the dictionaries are on your phone; no Internet connection is required.

Re: Apple watch and Air Pods

2017-01-06 Thread Deb Lewis
Well the pairing was seamless on all devices including the watch.
Switching between the two phones and the Ipad involves tapping on the
airpods under the control center bluetooth. So they are paired with
the watch. But when I go to airplay and tap on them as instructed for
the watch, they connect briefly and then connection fails. They all
have the current OS and are listed among the supported hardware. Apple
Accessibility says it should be working better than this and they're
supposedly looking into it. I asked them if the intent was for the
airpods to work on the watch only when music is playing, I don't have
any music on the watch. They said it shouldn't be a factor but I'm
thinking I should put some. But I'd like to point the airpods to my
watch, take my dog outside, and answer the phone from the watch when
it rings. Right now I can't do that.

2017-01-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Thanks,
Ari

Did you tab until you are on the Library button/folder tab before pressing ctrl
+ j? When I ctrl + j after placing focus on the library tab after selecting
music with ctrl + 1 as the media displayed, tabbing once after that ctrl + j
places me in the view options dialog. This dialog doesn't have a view choice

select from among album, artist, etc. and whether you want ascending or
descending order. There are also several tickboxes where you can select which
music columns to display.

I hope this helps.

J and view optionsIs spoken but then I tab and “no options” is spoken.

Cher and Larry,

Let me say up front that I'm running iTunes for Windows 12.5.4.42 on my Windows
7 desktop.

When I launch iTunes, it comes up with music as the selected media. To switch
to apps, press ctrl + 7. Above the main screen where content is displayed are
three folder tabs or buttons, Library, Updates, and App Store. You want Library
to be selected which you should be able to tab to. Once library is selected,
you should be able to invoke the view options by pressing ctrl + J. The first
item in the dialog which opens is view as where you should select list. There
are other sort and tickboxes to select what you want displayed about the apps
library. Press ctrl + J when you're done. I assume you can set view options for
other media content too such as music following the above steps.

I hope this helps but post back if you have more questions.

Given that the iOS native Pages app will read and send documents in Word

RE: Getting a document off my iPhone and on to my laptop

2017-01-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, if you want to create documents on your phone you would need Word which as
an Office 365 subscriber you have access to and all its features. I rarely use
Word even on the PC since my work requires daily use of Excel, but I don't use
either on my iPhone since I find it is just too inefficient to create and work
with documents on my phone. Everybody says the PC is declining, but if you look
at CES this year there are PC's and laptops everywhere and as much as Apple and
some other outfits may want people to think an iPhone, iPad or other tablet is
a PC replacement I think that in an office environment where you work at a desk
a desktop computer is still the way to go and it will be for some time to come.
If any tablet is a computer replacement it's a Microsoft Surface and not an
iPad. I think Apple is once again missing the boat by sticking to iOS on the
iPad and by not introducing touchscreens to their still expensive line of Mac
computers. I would say the reception this new touchbar received is luke warm at
best and right now Microsoft is steeling Apple's Thunder so to speak when it
comes to high-end desktop and laptop computers. Just read the reviews of the
new Microsoft Stuido desktop and their Surface laptops.

Anyhow, back to your question, I very much assume that if you use one of the
iOS apps like Word or Excel that anything you create will be saved in OneDrive
and on an iPhone this means it will be saved to the cloud and should instantly
be available on your computer if OneDrive is set up there.

Hello,
Language is in the rotor by default, provided that you have more than one voice
over language. Rather than settings general accessibility voiceover rotor, try
just flicking it, and see if you can find language? If you can't, you might be
having a different issue entirely.

RE: Apple watch and Air Pods

2017-01-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Apple states that for the “seamless switching” iOS 10, Mac OS Sierra and Watch
OS 3 are required. While Bluetooth Multipoint is not supported, Airpods should
still work between Apple devices. They are after all made by Apple and designed
primarily for Apple devices and I am not surprised that Apple is pulling the
somewhat proprietary number here. Here is what it says on the Apple website and
what I am curious about regarding using the Airpods with an iPhone and an Apple
Watch:

Automatic setup. Seamless switching.
AirPods connect automatically with all your Apple devices. They’re
simultaneously connected to your iPhone and Apple Watch, and sound switches
instantly between the devices.
Want to listen to your Mac or iPad? Just choose AirPods on those devices.

According to this they should work and switch seamlessly between an iPhone and
Apple Watch, but if you want to use them for an iPad or Mac computer you have
to select them as the audio destination. I have not bought them and for now I
doubt I will given the price especially here in Canada. I just don’t feel like
spending $250 which is what the price ends up being by the time I add our sales
taxes and then of course there is also my wife who might want a set so that
would be $500 if we both bought a pair and no matter how you look at it that is
a heck of a lot of money especially since Apple may release the second
generation of these who might be a whole lot better and offer a lot more
control on the headset. I really don’t like the fact that all I can do is
invoke SIRI which of course isn’t even an option should you be out of WiFi or
cell data range. My Plantronics Voyager Edge is only a single earpiece, but it
also pauses playback when I take it out of my ear, it has volume controls,
play/pause and forward/rewind on the earpiece, I can still bring up SIRI and if
somebody calls me I can just tell it to answer the call and it will do that
without me ever touching the phone or the earpiece. It has 6 hours of talk time
and more for playback time and also has a cradle which can recharge it a bit
more than once. It was also half the price of the Airpods so even though I
think the Airpods are probably very nice, they fall short of what I would want
them to be for now.
I used to feel it was OK to remove the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 and 7
Plus, but right now I actually think it was probably not a great idea. Maybe if
the new iPhone this coming fall supports really good wireless charging
technology so that you can use a Lightning headset at the same time as you
charge and without having to resort to some complicated $40 dongle I may change
my mind again, but if the next iPhone still needs to be plugged in I may very
well hold onto my 6S Plus for a third year.

Sieghard

1. not support multipoint, so the switching between devices isn't possible;

Pairing them to a phone was easy, and they easily reconnect themselves
to that phone. But my Apple watch and my second phone will not stay
connected, and the watch doesn't connect unless I reboot the watch.
Every BT headset on the market can do this badly. I'm fine about going
into Control panel on the watch and connecting, but it should connect
and it should stay connected. but neither are true. So any suggestions
are welcome. I have a ticket open with Apple but they seem pretty
clueless so far since they don't seem to have much testing with
Voiceover recorded in their troubleshooting system.

 Hi,

Voice Dream Writer has the ability to move to the next misspelled word,
making it easier to fix misspellings than in other apps. You can also
create headings and move by heading as well as paragraph, making it easier
to navigate documents. It creates plain text files. You can export them to
Word and a couple of other formats, though. It also has a variety of
dictionary options and a proofreading mode that helps you check features
like capitalization. There's also a Find feature. So it has a lot of
 useful writing tools.

 Best,
 Anna

Re: Getting a document off my iPhone and on to my laptop

2017-01-06 Thread TaraPrakash
Hi Sieghard and all.
Would you need two different apps

One note and Verd app for that to happen I also want to know where does
word save your file that you create on your phone is it on the phone or on
cloud?
I would have office 365 subscription so what would be the best way for me to
create a document primarily on phone

Thanks for any suggestions

Re: Confused about Reports of Battery Drain with iOS 10.2

2017-01-06 Thread Craig Werner
Thanks to everyone who has responded to this thread. I know battery
drainage comes up every time a new OS is released. I decided to ask
only because I was warned by a high profile Computing Services
director at my former place of employment and because of reports I
came across in what appeared to be credible journals. I will shortly
update.

Re: Apple watch and Air Pods

I've found the AirPods (or Beats w/ W1-chip) to:
1. not support multipoint, so the switching between devices isn't possible;
2. The magic of seemless pairing, auto-connecting, etc. only happens with
iOS 10 device

No, you do not have to be subscribed to office 365 to create documents. You do
have to have a Microsoft account, which is free, and you have to be signed in
