Subject: Battery Usage

Speaking of battery drainage, some years ago when the newest phones came out
they were posting about how the battery might last a
couple days depending on what applications you're using. So today I was out and
for about three hours I had location services on
cellular data on and I had maps open. So the battery drains almost down to
nothing in that period time which I thought was a little
excessive. I had no other applications open.
Only getting three or four hours of battery life when using a program so
essential for many doesn't seem so great to me. Is this the
type of battery drain other people are getting when they're using maps when
they're driving a car with somebody and they have a
location tracking on? I left the house with a fully charged phone.
I'm one of those who some of you laugh at that micromanages my phone a lot! I
rarely have anything open in the app switcher. I
usually go to two or three applications at a time him and not even for very
long. I also rather obsessively rarely have cellular
data on and I almost never have location tracking on except when I want to
check whether or I'm driving somewhere in the car with
somebody.

that has the ability to talk to and see visitors from the IPhone from the other

RE: talking multimeter

2017-01-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
On the blind woodworkers group the General multimeter has also been mentioned.
Thought I add that if anybody is interested that there is also a bluetooth 6
inch caliper available as well as a digital bluetooth angle cube. After you
pair these devices I just use the calculator app to hear the results as they
are essentially just like a bluetooth input device and when you press the
button on the device to send the measurement Voiceover will simply speak it.

I didn't look at all of the specs for the multi-meter,

I have an old meter here, but am not even sure if it reads in milliamps.

Thanks Rick, I'll most likely by the saying, as it looks very much
accessible. I'm also looking for a USB type of charging indicator. What I
mean is, something to measure Milla amps as in my solar powered device
charger. See what I'm saying?

Press the home button with a finger that you didn't register with Touch Id or

RE: Copy and paste from windows to iPhone, need an app:

2017-01-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You probably refer to the Windows 10 application called the “Snipping Tool”
which is different.
There is also the app called Zero Tap, haven’t used it in a while, but I think
it it still works.
On the PC you just put a shortcut on the desktop to the Zerotap website, you
can sign in and tell it to remember your user name and password, then write or
paste your text in the text box on the PC and as soon as you open Zero Tap on
the iPhone the text will be copied to the pasteboard, you can go to any app and
paste it in.

By the way, if you'd like to participate in this discussion on Twitter, compose

For example one might tweet, (without the quotation marks), "I would #NameMyAI

Include the @AppleSupport handle in your tweet and, who knows, perhaps Apple

for this, it is my hope that someday, they will.

So, I was just thinking about what name I would like to use for Siri, were I
given the option. Hence, the subject of this thread.

Of course, being a lifelong Star Trek fan, my first inclination would be to
set my trigger word to "Computer"; as in, "Computer, cancel my appointment
with Oprah for tomorrow." (smile)

However, as I began to think about it, I decided that perhaps, just perhaps,
the word "Computer", may not be the best choice, in the long run.

So, I came up with three names that I would like to use for my AI or
personal digital assistant with one runner-up. They are:

1.
Christine.

2.
Maggie,.

3.
Cecil.

Runner-up: Bobby.

(Big Smile)

Okay, it's your turn, please reply with your 3 top choices for your AI, were
you given the option.

I look forward to reading all your replies,

Mark

Richard, you're a lifesaver! I totally missed that setting! I was a bit panicie
when I was going through those settings, admitedly, so it probably just didn't
register with me. Anyhow, thanks a heap! I've got things working right now. For
future reference, they're the options right at the top of the visual settings
screen, and you can choose between plain text and original layout.

RE: Gesture Changes with Voiceover and Zoom

2017-01-30 Thread Richard Turner
It looks like as far as gesture changes go, it is just those two three finger
gestures.
But, as others have stated, VoiceOver and Zoom do not play well together.
They get out of sync in spite of the focus option in the zoom settings.
So, zoom might show something on the screen, but VoiceOver can be reading stuff
that is not visual at that moment. That is very confusing.
I try to convince clients to just use VoiceOver. If they stick with it, they
will be more efficient than having to enlarge the text especially on a phone.

HTH,
Richard

VDR and pdf's with text in them.

2017-01-30 Thread englishrider91
I handed my phone to someone this afternoon to take a look at some instructions
for a lock I recently purchased. I'd put the pdf file in VDR, and it read
beautifully before I handed the person my phone. The pdf was completely
accessible and wasn't just a picture of text, so VDR handled it just fine. When
I got my phone back, I could no longer see the text of the pdf. All I'm getting
now is the buttons of VDR, like the play button, the navigation button, ETC.
When I press play, the text will read--I just can't see it with VO! Can someone
please help? The person said the text vanished for them, too. How can I get the
file's text to display? I'm super stumped. I've looked in the reader settings
and the visual settings, but I didn't find anything that looked like what I
want.

Thanks,
Ari

Hi Tom How are you? I'm not low vision, but I'm totally blind, and I only use
Voiceover not soom. However, I herd that in order to mute speech of Voiceover
you need to do three fingers triple tap instead of doing three fingers
double tap. Question, did you try to do the Voiceover practice that is on
settings when Voiceover and soom are running at the same time? You can practice
gestures that way. I look forward in hearing from yousoon. Thanks and God bless!

Re: Finding things that are recommended on the list

2017-01-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Good advice, and I'd go further to say that if you add things like
iPhone or App Store to your search, you'll probably find the link to the
App Store in one of your first two or three hits. It's also a good idea
to check the spelling of the app before searching for it in Google or
your favorite web search engine.

start with a search on your favorite search engine, perhaps Google, or
DuckDuckGo.com, etc.

If you cannot find it, then send a question to the list or even the
person specifically who recommended it. Nine times out of ten you will
find the item much faster that way. In the time it takes you to write
an email to this list and ask where to find said item, you will have
already found it. That way you don’t have to wait around until someone
decides to tell you where they got it.

Just a thought for the sake of efficiency.

The current version is 10.2.1, which fixed some VoiceOver issues.
At this point, you may want to wait for 10.3 to come out.

Re: Battery Usage

2017-01-30 Thread Richard Turner

GPS is one of the heaviest battery draining service around and Apple Maps seems
to drain it more than others.
I would say getting 3 to 4 hours of continuous use with Maps is going to be
pretty standard. If I'm using GPS in a car, I plug the phone into the car to
keep it charged.
IF the car doesn't have a usb port, but has a cigarette lighter, you can get an
adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter that has a usb port so you can
keep the phone charged when traveling.

Richard

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball

2017-01-30 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Last fall we launched the inaugural iAccessVO Fantasy football league and it
was a massive success. Thanks to the iPhone Yahoo app for those of you who like
playing fantasy sports, everything is completely accessible through the app.
From the draft to day to day management, Yahoo has done an amazing job making
everything VoiceOVer accessible. We are now launching the first iAccessVO
fantasy baseball league. Email me at brianfisch...@me.com if you are interested
in playing or learning more and I will get back to you. Additionally for those
of you who are not interested and are basketball fans, my contact at Yahoo has
let me know for the first time ever that Yahoo’s March madness brakets will be
VoiceOVer accessible this year. We will also be launching a March Madness blind
league as well. And no you do not need to listen to our podcast to play, just
have to be blind, and of course the best part it is all free. Just tons of fun
and a great waste of time.

Hi Michael,
I didn't look at all of the specs for the multi-meter,
so I am not sure of all of the ranges available.
I have an old meter here, but am not even sure if it reads in milliamps.

Take care,

Thanks Rick, I'll most likely by the saying, as it looks very much
accessible. I'm also looking for a USB type of charging indicator. What I
mean is, something to measure Milla amps as in my solar powered device
charger. See what I'm saying?

Battery Usage

2017-01-30 Thread Deidre Muccio
Speaking of battery drainage, some years ago when the newest phones came out
they were posting about how the battery might last a couple days depending on
what applications you're using. So today I was out and for about three hours I
had location services on cellular data on and I had maps open. So the battery
drains almost down to nothing in that period time which I thought was a little
excessive. I had no other applications open.
Only getting three or four hours of battery life when using a program so
essential for many doesn't seem so great to me. Is this the type of battery
drain other people are getting when they're using maps when they're driving a
car with somebody and they have a location tracking on? I left the house with a
fully charged phone.
I'm one of those who some of you laugh at that micromanages my phone a lot! I
rarely have anything open in the app switcher. I usually go to two or three
applications at a time him and not even for very long. I also rather
obsessively rarely have cellular data on and I almost never have location
tracking on except when I want to check whether or I'm driving somewhere in the
car with somebody.

Re: odd message

2017-01-30 Thread Richard Turner

I had a similar thing happen with an iPhone 6s. I was on a trip using Google
Maps, and all the sudden I heard SIM card not installed.
I had to switch to my wife's phone.
When we got where we were going, I removed the case, popped the simm card out,
and pushed it back in, never removing it completely.
That fixed it for a few weeks, then it did it again.
I did the same thing, and now two months later, it is still working fine.
No idea what happens, but it seems to have settled down.
Now, I keep a paperclip handy just in case.

Hello all,
I hope this doesn't prove to be a very stupid question, and something I
should've learned a long time ago…!
I do not understand why the router settings do not stay the same from let's
say application to application or email to email even. So for instants if
I'm doing something and I change the rotor to read me things by word, the
next time I do something else in the next application or the next email or
the next documents or the next edit field it switches back to something else
and never stays where I just left it. This drives me absolutely crazy and I
really do not want to be making additional jesters over and over and over
again.

Is there an easy explanation for this?

Hi afik! VoiceOver reads the number as number and doesn’t reads as words. you
can change in VoiceOver utilities. go to and there choose the “text” tab.
choose “read number as” and there choose word instead numbers.

hear two messages which say "sim card not installed," and "sim card failure."
This happens with and without the charging cable plugged in at 100% battery
charge. What on earth is going on and how do I fix it? The phone has not been
dropped or damaged. Thanks in advance for your ideas.

RE: talking multimeter

2017-01-30 Thread Chip Orange
Thanks ... big help to my friend who is looking, so I'll pass it along.

I did find another blind user who has successfully used the RedFish Instruments
one, so looks like he'll have to take his chances on the General Tool one, as I
haven't seen any verifying reports of accessibility yet.

Hi all,

Since I ran across an old friend who was (probably still is) a ham radio
operator, I thought I'd mention I just came across a multi-meter device with
bluetooth, which transmits it's readings to a smartphone app, which will
speak them and/or record them. You can find it at

http://redfishinstruments.com

and it's their IDVM (and their app is the IDVM2 in the app store). I think
it's the only thing they make/sell.

The app is free and the device is $150.

Hth,

Chip

RE: the red lazor app

2017-01-30 Thread Chip Orange
According to Richard, you do have to tap the heading which says "Scan" in order
to make it scan after you've had one successful scan (or I think after you've
gone to some other screen like its "settings" screen).

Try that, as I don't think it can hurt.

Don,

It does work on iPhones. You do not have to activate any buttons in order to
get it to scan. When you open the app, the camera is already on, so hold it
over the item that has the barcode you want to scan. It will make a sound when
it finds the barcode.

Then you will see options that allow you to go to Amazon, Google, etc. You
will need to go to one of these in order to find the description of the barcode
that the app found on the package.

some home button questions on the iphone 7

2017-01-30 Thread Jed Barton

Hey guys,

I had a question on the home button. On my iphone 6, when i would press
the home button, it would allow me to swipe through my most recent
notifications that came in, and if i wanted to unlock it, i would hold
my fignerprint. The iphone 7 doesn't seem to be doing that, it seems
that when i press the home button it just opens up. I have a finger
print setup. Am i missing something?

Cheers,
Jed

Finding things that are recommended on the list

2017-01-30 Thread Richard Turner
I'm not the moderator, so feel free to ignore this, but, if people recommend
products on this list and do not provide a link, I suggest you start with a
search on your favorite search engine, perhaps Google, or DuckDuckGo.com, etc.
If you cannot find it, then send a question to the list or even the person
specifically who recommended it. Nine times out of ten you will find the item
much faster that way. In the time it takes you to write an email to this list
and ask where to find said item, you will have already found it. That way you
don't have to wait around until someone decides to tell you where they got it.

Just a thought for the sake of efficiency.

RE: Fopydoc Scan stand

2017-01-30 Thread Richard Turner
Fopydo Scanning Stand for the Blind and Visually Impaired
FopyDo stands for Photo-Copy-Document. It is a great new concept in stands. It
measures 11.75 by 9.5 by .5 inches when folded up. It is made from corigated
plastic and folds up very nicely. Easy to set up and the default height is 10.5
inches and works great for scanning an 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of paper. At it's
tallest setting, it puts the device about 14 inches from the desk and will work
for scanning legal sized documents or both pages of a book at once. There are
two metal legs that have microsuction tape on the ends so it doesn't slide on
slick surfaces.
This new version is now available. order Fopydo using Pay pal or a credit card

shipping.

Hello, what is the reading aid? I have the stand that I purchased for $25 from
Amazon. It has the adhesive strip at the top to hold your device in place as
you scan.
I would like to get into batch of scanning so I can get back into small print
books again. Not every broke out there is going to be available to you
electronically. Thanks in advance for any help.

If you plan to scan books, having the Book Reading Aid plus the stand is very
helpful.
If you do not plan to do much with scanning books, but just individual
documents, you only need the Fopydo Scanning Stand.

The NFB Store sells the Fopydo Stand by itself for $12.00 with free shipping.
They do not carry the book reading aid, so if you want both, it is best to go
through either Amazon or the fopydo.com web site.

I have a question for you.

Which is the best with the Fopydoc just the scan stand only or the scan stand
with the book? I do have KNFB app. I just want to make sure about this.

Thank you,

Re: the red lazor app

2017-01-30 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hi,
As soon as you open the app it is scanning. obviously, you have to have a
barcode for it to scan. The easiest thing to do would be to have a package, but
you know has a barcode on it, scan the package slowly until you hear a pin or a
vibration. then a new screen will open with the choice of searching Amazon or
Google, are usually choose Google. if you have your rotor set to headings, you
can flick down between the results. When you have finished, there is a done
button at the top.
I hope this helps, Sandy

RE: the red lazor app

2017-01-30 Thread Mike Ulrich
Hi,

I’ve just downloaded the neo reader app to my 5S. I can’t figure out how to
work the app.

How do I take a picture of the bar code?

I’ve given permission for neo reader to use my camera. But I can’t seem to find
where the camera or scan button is?

I heard someone on this thread, mention something about double tapping the Scan
Header. I tried that, and nothing.

Can somebody please explain the whole scanning process to me?

I am using an iPhone 6. when the app opens it is already scanning. so have
you're back facing camera towards where you think your barcode might be.
perhaps, begin with something easy where you know the barcode is. once it finds
