Hi Cliff! Thanks so much for this. Is this for both tvOS and iOS? Also, I have
a new AppleTV… And I have no idea how to work the guide. Can you provide me
with more info on how to do it? Maybe it's just my ineptness. When I refer to
the guide, I mean in DirecTV now. Thank you so much! Have a great day.

I can download email significantly faster on my iPhone or iPod Touch 6 than I
can on my Windows 10 64 bit laptop running Outlook 2016.
Plus, the threading on the Apple devices is so far superior than with Outlook,
I can manage hundreds of emails far easier on the Apple devices.
The use of threading is also why I ask people to start a new thread when they
want to change topics in a thread. Like the thread that started out about
getting pictures off an iPad mini, than soon became a thread about handling
emails on computers VS iPhones.
Once I decide I'm done with a thread, I stop opening the individual messages
and just delete the thread.
Or, when it is clear that a thread has been taken off topic, I just delete the
thread.
Saves tons of time.
And, while offices are not going to stop using computers, I use my iPhone a ton
when I'm out of the office to update my calendar, write up reports, etc. Then
when I get back to the office, I can get my work done very quickly.
I could go on and on, but won't.
For some, the iPhone iPod, iPad are a secondary device, but for me it is equal
if not a little ahead of the computer.
I will always turn to the computer for audio editing, but almost everything
else, I can do as effectively on my Apple devices.

PC's versus smart phones [WAS was Re: Getting Pictures Off of an iPad Mini to a Windows PC"]

2017-02-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
First of all, no where did I say that you said we can't handle emails on
our smart phones. You don't want to be taken out of context, so please
extend that courtesy to others on the list as well.

In fact, what you did say, and I quote, is "... with a computer you will
be doing the same thing in seconds, instead hours." All I said in my
email, which you can read below, is that this is an exaggeration and is
only your experience and your opinion.

If you can read, reply to, file and delete a hundred message on your PC
in a few seconds then that's great, and you are infinitely more
proficient with email on your PC than I am. On the other hand if it
takes you hours to read, reply to, move and delete a hundred emails on
your smart phone then you're either doing some complicated email
formatting like Seeghard describes, or I'm a lot more proficient when it
comes to handling email on a smart phone then you are.

In fact, there are some tasks I prefer to do on my iPhone. For example,
if I'm going to read, delete and move a bunch of emails at work, I'll do
that on my iPhone before I'll do that in Outlook on my PC. I just find
that Outlook with JAWS or NVDA just doesn't handle threading as eel as
the Mail app does on the iPhone. If I were also talking about replying
to and writing emails then yes, I'm going to go to my PC first. Also, if
I were comparing the Mail app on my iPhone to Thunderbird with Orca on
Linux, then I'd take that combination on my PC over the iPhone, but
that's not an option for me at the job.

I agree that doing some things, such as content generation, is generally
more efficient on a PC than on a smart phone, but a lot of things
related to content consumption is just as easy if not easier on a tablet
or smart phone. My problem with your statement is that you're making
wild exaggerations, you're stating your opinion as fact and you're not
providing any use cases or details about what you're doing that's so
much more efficient on your PC.

I also don't agree that your smart phone or tablet is a supplementary
device. It may be in your case, and that's fine. I know plenty of people
though who use a tablet now as their primary device, and yes that is in
an office setting. I'm not there yet, but it isn't because mobile
devices don't have the necessary computing power. It has to do more with
the state of the apps, their accessibility, and keyboard support.
Convertible devices are also blurring the distinction between mobile
devices and laptops, and there's no reason to think this trend won't
continue. Look at the specs of your high end smart phones and the specs
you need on your PC to accomplish the same tasks. The deltas have shrunk
incredibly over the last few years, if they even exist at all any more.

You can relegate your smart phone and tablet to a supplementary device
if you want, but I'm glad their are innovators at Canonical, Microsoft
and elsewhere that realize there's no reason why one device can't bridge
the gap between the mobile and desktop spaces.

Of course that when you are traveling you use your phone, supplementary tool. I
am not saying that you cannot use your phone to read or reply an email, did I
say so?
No right?
Ok, don't take my emails out of the point. I am saying that people using smart
phones are not that efficient managing emails as they are using a computer.
Just take that statement, not add or remove anything from there.
The fact that you take 15 more minutes using your phone to handle emails is
proving what I am saying.
If you believe that you working as a professional in your office will not need
a computer because you have an iPhone, you are wrong, and you will not get any
job thinking like that. It is already proved, we are not efficient working on
smart phones as we are on a computer.
People works a lot faster using a computer than using their smart phones. It is
for logic reasons. Simplicity of the apps is one, size of screen is other,
limitations of hardware is other. And the list can continue.
Now try to read my email again, and you will see that I am not saying that we
cannot handle emails, I am saying that we are not efficient if I compare with
a computer handling emails.

This doesn't need to be the case. Smart phones have more than enough computing
power to make handling emails just as

Re: Tunein radio

2017-02-07 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Go into settings, itunes and app store, and access your apple ID. You either
will have to usetouch ID, or type in your password to get in. once you are in
this section, you are not trying to edit your ID itself, so swipe past

where you edit your ID, and continue to swipe to subscriptions. You cancel it
within subscriptions. It is easier to do than this description makes it sound.

Re: Bible apps

2017-02-07 Thread Michael Feir
You get the app for free but need to buy the audio version of the bible if
you want that. You can buy just the old or new testament if that is all you
want. The text version of the New King James bible is free. You can also
get what they call a study bible which you can purchase. It has notes and
things. There are also bible plans and other free resources available in
the app. It all works fine with Voiceover.

I prefer the Word of Promise bible app. It has a dramatised version of the
New King James bible and you can also read the complete text. Everything is
very accessible. I couldn't be happier with it.

Pronunciation dictionary question

2017-02-07 Thread Rajmund
Hi there,
Rather than adding all these people to my contacts, I was thinking of adding
entire, or parts of phone numbers to my pronunciation dictionary.
Unfortunately, I'm failing. Can I truly not add a number string, and modify it
with standard alphabetical letters? So like 123-456-7890, can I truly not
replace it with something like the random example? This would then mean instead
of hearing his number all the time, I could just hear message from random
example. Again, I don't wish to add people to my contacts, but being in an
iMessage group, with like 20 numbers, it would be nice to remember names.
Thanks for any pointers.

What is not accessible and how is what ever it is not accessible to
you? Being specific in written messages is very useful. Could you
not use the same process that you used to add the first RSS feed to ad

The best option is still a good old stand-alone colour identifier like the
Colorino, it does I think 150 colours, but it speaks them as understandable
colours and not like whatever weird names they come up with like the one you
mentioned. The Colorino will say maybe "Intensive Red" or something like
that, but pretty clear what it means and much more reliable than anything
you can get for the iPhone. They do also seem to last since I had mine for
probably 15 years and all I ever do is to replace the batteries maybe once a
year.

also iDentifi does a good job. but you need to know that none of them are
going to be anywhere near what a sighted person sees, especially with
patterns or different shades.
But either app, TapTapSee or iDentifi will be close, depending on lighting
of course.

Hi Christopher,

I totally agree in that I find reading my email on the iPhone is just as easy
as on the PC. Also, if I just need to send a brief message or reply to an email
it's OK, but if I have to email somebody, maybe attach several documents, go to
a website and get a link which I then need to insert into the email or even I
may have to insert a table into the email body then doing that on an iPhone
quickly and efficiently is pretty hopeless. I sometimes have to send an email
to a supplier with instructions to pay a number of invoices. I would have these
invoices in a simple Excel spreadsheet with usually 3 or 4 columns (invoice
number, invoice date, due date and amount) and whatever number of rows depends
on how many invoices I have to pay, could be 3 or 4 or a dozen or 15 or even
20. At the bottom I then have the total. I can open that Excel file, copy the
range of columns and rows and paste it into an email in about 15 or 20 seconds
on the PC. I have never tried it on the iPhone, but I'm pretty sure it would be
quite a challenge.

As for Mike,, you mentioned that you are trying to keep up managing your Inbox
for your Outlook account on your PC and iPhone. If you set up your Outlook
account correctly there should be no need to manually have to do this as
whatever you do on one device will be reflected on the other and vice versa. I
have my personal email account set up on my laptop at home, one of my work
desktops and on my iphone and my email and contacts are always up to date no
matter on which device I added or deleted a contact or where I composed,
replied to or deleted an email.

This doesn't need to be the case. Smart phones have more than enough computing
power to make handling emails just as efficient as on a PC.
The applications used may need some improvement to get there, but there's
nothing limiting about a mobile platform when it comes to handling emails.

Also, the delta between what you can do now on your smart phone and what you
can do on your PC isn't nearly as wide as the message below would make you
believe. I prefer to do most of my emailing from my PC, but when my PC isn't
available to me, such as when I'm traveling, the difference is more like 30
minutes on my PC to 45 minutes on my smart phone. This is just an estimate, but
it's definitely not seconds versus hours.

I'm not sure if this is just unabashed exaggeration or maybe the poster just
isn't as proficient with email aps on their smart phone as they are with email
clients on their PC. Either way, below is just one person's experience and just
one persons opinion.

2017-02-07 Thread Pablo Cesar Morales
No, I am not an expert like you, not for sure. Neither I am an expert using
computers as probably you are. I am like the most people on the world. I am a
standard user. It is why smart phones are consider supplementary tools. Because
the average of users of smart phones and computers works more efficiently on
computers than on smart phones. I am not saying that we cannot handle emails on
smart phones, I do that all the time. But I will not compare my efficiency
working on my computer than doing the same thing on my iPhone or android
phone. Come on man, you are arguing something that you can read everywhere.

RE: Getting Pictures Off of an iPad Mini to a Windows PC

2017-02-07 Thread Pablo Cesar Morales
Just research, just ask on blogs, just see it by yourself. Christopher, I
understand that what I am saying is a little bit painful for smart phone users,
but we need to be realistic. Smart phones are supplementary tools, they are not
work tools with enough power to replace a computer. No, no yet.

Interesting, at the time I got voice dream reader, the read2go app cost more
than voice dream reader. Is read2go now free?

Yes. Great app. I also beta tested it. But my current problem is to get the
books out of read2go app

For the point of comparisonthough read to go is free whereas
Voice dream reader costs a lot

RE: Getting Pictures Off of an iPad Mini to a Windows PC

2017-02-07 Thread Pablo Cesar Morales
What you said is true only if you don't use your computer efficiently. But the
fact that you are able to manage hundreds of emails in your iPhone doesn't mean
that you are efficiently managing your emails. Yes is true that I am able to
build a house by myself, but it doesn't mean that it is the better way, the
most efficient way, and either the cheaper way.
Just think about the waste of time. How many other things you will be able to
do if you do the same thing on a computer in a couple of seconds? It is called
opportunity cost.

Hi,
Disagree. You can manage, thousands and thousands of messages, from absolutely
anything, if you know how. Yes, that includes this braillenote as well.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Richard,

First of all, in order to use Windows Explorer you do have to turn off iCloud
Photo Library. I haven’t tried this in a while, but for me at least for some
time even when I did this I could copy pictures off my phone but I could not
use cut or delete, it would give me an access denied or some such message.

i was late getting on this thread. You can delete all your pictures using
Windows explorer.
That is the one place you can avoid iTunes.
When you plug in your USB cable, wait a little while, 10 or 20 seconds to make
sure your computer sees the iDevice.
Launch windows explorer.
Navigate to the iDevice.
Select the drive and hit enter. Keep selecting folders and hitting enter until
you get to a folder that contains image files.
Hit backspace to go back to that folder name. There may be lots of folders at
that level as Apple seems to create separate folders for different groups of
pictures.
You might check a couple other folders at that level to confirm they have
images in them.
But, if you are sure you want to take them all off your iDevice, hit control-a,
and control-x and go to a folder on your computer and paste all those
subfolders where you can go back to them, or, just hit delete and get rid of
them.
Just like that, you have no pictures on your device.
HTH,
Richard

No way. Smart phones are supplementary tools. You will be more efficient
handling your email from your computer than from your iPhone. Especially when
we are talking about huge amounts of emails per day.
To handle 10 or 15 per day is ok, but not to handle hundreds of emails, that is
a little bit silly and a waste of time. Probablly a good exercise for your
hands, but with a computer you will be doing the same thing in seconds, instead
hours.

Sieghard,
I’m glad I’m not the only one that if isn’t carefully keeping up with them, had
at previous times a inbox with a massive amount of emails in it!
One time though, I did select them all; and deleted them. I had about 3000
emails at the time. It was a should I stay or should I go moment for sure! LOL!
So I try to keep up with both my laptop’s Outlook inbox, along with my 5S inbox
too! A good lesson for sure!

I look at my camera roll like my email Inbox. If I don't deal with the emails

Of course that those pictures weren’t taken in the same place or at the same

RE: color identifier app

2017-02-07 Thread Richard Turner
In the world of standalone color identifiers, yes the Colorino is very good.
Also the Rainbow 2 by Emerson Electronics is also very good for basic colors
and costs about $50 less than the Colorino.

However, if you want to know if your shirt has a pattern, you will need either
sighted assistance or use an app like iDentifi or TapTapSee.

They will usually also tell you that it is blue, white, red, green flowers or
whatever.
Granted, the color accuracy with the iPhone camera is not as good as the stand
alone devices, but it can get you roughly in the ball park.

If you truly want accurate color identification you will have to have a sighted
person assist you in labelling the clothes in some form.
Digit-Eyes makes great labels that can be sown into a garment and you can
record as detailed a description as you like, but that is fairly time intensive.

This is all up to each person's level of detail they wish to know.

I have to admit, while I test all these things for clients, I cheat and just
have my sighted wife tell me what something is and whether they go together.
What can I say, I'm lazy, grin.

If I was on my own again, I would go the Digit-Eyes label route or cut my
wardrobe back to what it was in my single days where everything matched so it
didn't matter. I figure since my wife wanted me to dress in more colors, it is
her job to keep things straight, ha, ha.

Later,
Richard

RE: Getting Pictures Off of an iPad Mini to a Windows PC

2017-02-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,
Sieghard

2017-02-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard,

First of all, in order to use Windows Explorer you do have to turn off iCloud
Photo Library. I haven’t tried this in a while, but for me at least for some
time even when I did this I could copy pictures off my phone but I could not
use cut or delete, it would give me an access denied or some such message.

Sieghard

i was late getting on this thread.
HTH,
Richard

I don't think you can delete via Windows Explorer so you will have to do it on

particular time and date then it should have the place based on GPS

RE: Getting Pictures Off of an iPad Mini to a Windows PC

2017-02-07 Thread rajmund

Hi,
Disagree. You can manage, thousands and thousands of messages,
from absolutely anything, if you know how. Yes, that includes
this braillenote as well. Anything that has a client, you can do
it, as long as you know how to. And speaking of speed,
thunderbird beats outlook in every possible way.

Re: Getting Pictures Off of an iPad Mini to a Windows PC

2017-02-07 Thread Richard Turner

i was late getting on this thread.
HTH,
Richard

This doesn't need to be the case. Smart phones have more than enough
computing power to make handling emails just as efficient as on a PC.
The applications used may need some improvement to get there, but
there's nothing limiting about a mobile platform when it comes to
handling emails.

Also, the delta between what you can do now on your smart phone and what
you can do on your PC isn't nearly as wide as the message below would
make you believe. I prefer to do most of my emailing from my PC, but
when my PC isn't available to me, such as when I'm traveling, the
difference is more like 30 minutes on my PC to 45 minutes on my smart
phone. This is just an estimate, but it's definitely not seconds versus
hours.

I'm not sure if this is just unabashed exaggeration or maybe the poster
just isn't as proficient with email aps on their smart phone as they are
with email clients on their PC. Either way, below is just one person's
experience and just one persons opinion.

TapTapSee or iDentifi.
I've never heard either one use odd shade names like that.
The mistake is to use an app that calls itself a color identifier, as they tend
to get too fancy or too cute.
Both iDentifi and TapTapSee describe the picture, which includes colors,
especially of clothing.
They are both free and I often use both and compare, then ask a sighted person
at my first opportunity.
Just the other day, TapTapSee said a long sleeve shirt was gray, while iDentifi
said it was blue. It was actually a shade of blue, so in that case, iDentifi
was better. You just have to be patient while waiting for the result.

Richard

RE: Getting Pictures Off of an iPad Mini to a Windows PC

2017-02-07 Thread Mike Ulrich

Sounds like it's time for you to again sell your iPhone and go back to Android
*smile*.

I look at my camera roll like my email Inbox. If I don't deal with the emails
in my Inbox on a regular bases pretty soon I also have thousands of emails in
there and of course I can't delete them all since some are important. In the
same way I delete those pictures I don't want or no longer need on a regular
bases.

Sieghard

Oh wow,

I have 4715 pictures that I need to delete. Is not a easyer way to delete all
pictures not using iTunes?

Of course that those pictures weren’t taken in the same place or at the same
time. Regarding this kind of issues android is several steps ahead. With my
pixel I just connect my phone to my computer, and as you said before, control +
A, and delete key. Problem fixed.

I don't think you can delete via Windows Explorer so you will have to do it on
the phone. You can select groups of pictures, e.g. if you took 10 pictures at a
particular time and date then it should have the place based on GPS location
listed along with the time and you can select all the pictures in that group
which is faster than selecting each picture separately.'

Now, and how can I take all the pictures out of my iPhone? Like delete all of
them. I tried select all, and delete, but they are not deleted. I don’t want to
use iTunes, this software is a pain in the…

Just turn off Photo Library in Settings > iCloud. Once that is done the iPad
should show up in Windows Explorer as a drive and you an access the pictures
there and just highlight all with Control+A, then Control+C to copy, go to a
folder on your PC and Control+V to copy.

Subject: Getting Pictures Off of an iPad Mini to a Windows PC

Hey Guys,

My partner doesn’t own an Apple device, but she likes to use my iPad Mini 4 to
take pictures because she can see what she’s taking a picture of better than
with her digital camera. We would like to be able to get these pictures off of
it onto her Windows PC. There are several hundred of them now, so doing it
manually one at a time won’t be feasible. Is there some program that we can
install on her Windows PC that will transfer them? She doesn’t need to install
iTunes because, as I mentioned, she doesn’t own any Apple devices, and she
doesn’t use my iPad Mini for anything other than taking pictures. If installing
iTunes is the only, or the best, solution, then I can do that; but it seems
like overkill just to transfer a bunch of pictures.

Finally, if it’s something other than iTunes, it needs to be accessible with
her JAWS.

Thanks for any guidance.

Evan
