RE: iPhone 5S

2017-05-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Rick,

The 5S was released in the fall of 2013 and it is my guess that it will still
get iOS 11 this fall, but it is not sold officially any more and I would keep
in mind that it is basically a 4-year old phone and would advise against buying
it.
There should be plenty of iPhone 6 around and when the new iPhones come out
this fall there will probably be plenty of the 6S/6S Plus for sale as well.
It all depends if you absolutely need a phone now or if you can wait another 4
months. The person who said they are looking to upgrade to an SE is definitely
not making that great a choice at this stage. Sounds like they have a 5S and
again, unless it doesn't work well at all and they totally need a new phone now
I suggest to wait. The SE is a generation newer, but while it was released
after the 6S/6S Plus, it has the older, first generation touch Id home button
which was in the 5S and the 6 and 6 Plus. The 6S and 6S Plus have the second
generation Touch Id sensor which is more reliable and faster. I am quite sure
there will be a new 4 inch phone coming out as well so if somebody absolutely
wants that smaller size they should maye wait and see what Apple announces in
September.
The Apple world wide developer conference is the week after next, here Apple
will introduce iOS 11 and we may start to get some ideas based on iOS 11
features what is coming and certainly the rumours will soon start to become
more accurate as to what hardware may come in September.

Regards,
Sieghard

I have a 5s that I purchased in 2013. It is running fine.
It is running iOS 10.3.2 without a problem.
It is the first of the 64 bit processers. I don't know how long Apple will
continue to support them, but I have no plans to update until it dies.

How old is this model, and is the OS upgradeable?
Apparently this particular phone has IOS 7 currently installed.

Hi Kelsey,

Your best choice would be to get the app Voice Dream Reader. It will read ePub
files and a lot more and it is widely regarded as the best app for reading
eBooks and it can also read/play audio books.

Hello,
I am in a book club that several of my coworkers started. My local library has
an app that you can download that will allow you to request books and download
them to your phone. The format they use is e pub. I tried to read the book on
my iphone Se, but I could not get Voiceover to read the page. It said 1 of
488, but when I flicked right, there wasn't any sort of button that allows you
to listen to the book. I do have a Bard account and the mobile app, but I
think in order to listen to a Bard book, a wifi connection is necessary which I
do not have at my summer vacation home where I am right now. Therefore, if
anyone has ever used e pub format on their iphone, how do you get Voiceover to
read the book to you or is there a way to listen to it? I don't know I could be
doing wrong. If anyone has used this format and has gotten it to work, please
email me privately. The app is called Overdrive in case this is important. My
email address is piano.girl0...@gmail.com Thank you, Kelsey Nicolay

tournaments in dice world

2017-05-27 Thread Rebecca Ilniski
Hi all. I reported this to feedback. I like to participate in Balut
tournaments. One thing I have noticed is that not all rolls are counted. For
example, tonight I had four straights. According to VO my fourth slot was empty
so had to get 5 straights in order for it to be counted. Last night I had all 4
Baluts covered, however, in order for them to count I had to get 2 more before
that 4th slot filled in the game. I've seen this other times too where I have
to get an extra set of sixes to count for that fourth set of sixes. What gives
or am I missing something in the scoring of this game? Ayone else notice this
in Dice World?

Re: the cost of staying connected

2017-05-27 Thread Kelly Pierce
@Dan,

This is a great deal from Metro PCS. an individual line is $30 before
taxes though, making it more expensive for those wanting just one
line. thank goodness for TPO Mobile to force Metro PCS to lower its
prices.

@Chip, the $30 T-Mobile deal is no more. the company now steers folks
to a $40 unlimited plan.

@ed, Us Mobile and Ultra Mobile are cheaper, but they use the T-Mobile
network not the AT network of Consumer Cellular. some like the
coverage of AT for now compared to T-Mobile.

Re: the cost of staying connected

2017-05-27 Thread Kelly Pierce
Deidre,

why bitch about the high cost of cellular service when you say you
want premium cell phone service from the broadest network possible.
Premium services mean premium prices and the wireless industry is no
exception. as stated earlier on the list, T-Mobile has most of its
frequencies at the high end of the wireless spectrum. this means its
signals might not penetrate buildings or extend as Farr as those from
other carriers. This is particularly so outside the major metro
areas. Every carrier does not have great coverage in every region of
the country. It is important for a consumer to know the coverage
quality of the various carriers in his area.

virtually all blind users who can jump on WIFI every so often for app
updates and downloads along with downloading podcasts and audio books.
For most people, paying more for cell phone service is unnecessary.

I have a 5s that I purchased in 2013. It is running fine.
It is running iOS 10.3.2 without a problem.
It is the first of the 64 bit processers. I don't know how long Apple will
continue to support them, but I have no plans to update until it dies.

Re: the cost of staying connected

2017-05-27 Thread Deidre Muccio
I am so accustomed to having coverage no matter where I go and that I wouldn't
be able to tolerate not having coverage at the local university or as you say a
relatives house. I I know others that use T-Mobile that have this issue as well
so I haven't sprung for that. For the most part I'm happy with what I've got.
It's not cheap but at some point if I can no longer afford it now pare down the
service!

RE: the cost of staying connected

2017-05-27 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi All,
Another good service to purchase talk, text and data is from Consumer Cellular.
If you don't use a lot of data, talk and text it is pretty cheap. You pay for
what you use. I have 250 minutes, unlimited text and 500 mb of data and it only
cost me about $25 a month. If you want to add another line and share the talk,
text and data it is only 10 for each line. Again you pay for what you use.

T-mobil also has a prepaid themselves of $30 a month which is very similar. In
addition, T-mobil also will just sell you prepaid talk minutes with no data,
and you can just use your smart phone at home with wifi.

My problem with T-mobil is their lack of coverage ... my brother-in-law uses
them, but can't use his phone in my house as just one example of a place where
they don't cover.

The company is TPO Mobile, the People's Operator. It is a mobile virtual
network operator off the T-Mobile network. It is available only in the United
States. I found it using the website MVNO News, which identifies the companies
with the best deals. The price includes Chicago taxes and will likely be lower
in the rest of the country. I pay a severe premium for living in a socialist
paradise with its outrageous taxes.

MVNO news also lists deals from other carriers, including a new deal from a
Verizon MVNO.

First off we all pay a monthly service charge perhaps starting

Then there is the cost of the phone which can be dirt cheap if it

reading epub books on iphone

2017-05-27 Thread Kelsey Nicolay

Hello,
I am in a book club that several of my coworkers started. My
local library has an app that you can download that will allow
you to request books and download them to your phone. The format
they use is e pub. I tried to read the book on my iphone Se, but
I could not get Voiceover to read the page. It said 1 of 488,
but when I flicked right, there wasn't any sort of button that
allows you to listen to the book. I do have a Bard account and
the mobile app, but I think in order to listen to a Bard book, a
wifi connection is necessary which I do not have at my summer
vacation home where I am right now. Therefore, if anyone has
ever used e pub format on their iphone, how do you get Voiceover
to read the book to you or is there a way to listen to it? I
don't know I could be doing wrong. If anyone has used this
format and has gotten it to work, please email me privately. The
app is called Overdrive in case this is important. My email
address is piano.girl0...@gmail.com

Thank you,
Kelsey Nicolay

Re: MusicStreamer App by Stratospherix

You might find this app interesting, since you have lots of music that's not in
iTunes. I am pretty sure the guy who sent the original is a Windows user and an
iPhone user. So this could be a benefit for you.

RE: iPhone bluetooth keyboard recommendations

2017-05-27 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
I'm afraid some of your questions will vary widely because one person may find
one keyboard easy to use while another person finds that same keyboard not to
their liking.
So long as they have all the standard keys, all keyboards perform the same
tasks.
For an Apple device, they will have the control, options, and command keys that
are used for Voiceover commands.
Some keyboards, have them on both sides of the spacebar, which I find makes
using that kind of keyboard much easier as you can hold down control plus
options with either hand.
The Apple keyboard, for one, only has one option key on the left side.
My personal favorite keyboard has been the AmazonBasics KT1081, but that has
not been available for a couple of months and I have no idea if it will ever
become available.
Lots of folks like the Logitech k811 and the k480.
I know the specifications on the Logitech 480 says you can connect it to three
different devices and just turn a dial to pick the device you want to use which
would make it easy to set it up with an iPhone, iPad and a computer, for
example.

Everybody seems to have a slightly different preference on how the keys feel on
a keyboard. So, the bottom line is you will need to try one and if you don't
like it, take or send it back for a refund and try another one.

HTH,
Richard

Hello,

Thanks for all the comments, but I still have lots of doubts. Do all keyboards
perform the same tasks, or are there some that do more than others? Also, are
some keyboards easier to use than others?
I never used one.

2017-05-27 Thread 'evergreenwoods' via VIPhone
Hello,

Thanks for all the comments, but I still have lots of doubts. Do all keyboards
perform the same tasks, or are there some that do more than others? Also, are
some keyboards easier to use than others?
I never used one.
Rena

I hate that line ... especially from someone who is blind, who probably

If she cannot do the rotor, the first thing I would have her do is go into the
VoiceOver settings, Audio, and turn on audio ducking.
That way, other audio volumes will be lowered while VoiceOver is talking. That
may help a little.
Otherwise, other than the medthod you described by starting VoiceOver reading
and hitting the up volume button is the best way to turn it up.
Or, have someone else check that Volume is in the rotor, have them turn the
rotor to volume and flick up with one finger until it is at 100%. You may get
some distortion at that point, but she could see if that helps.
Or, if she has a Bluetooth keyboard, the rotor can be done by pressing the
right arrow plus the up arrow to turn it clockwise, or left arrow plus up arrow
to turn counter clockwise.

How do you turn up voice over? I thought it was starting reading and up volume.
I have a friend who is having difficulty getting voice over turned up, and she
cannot do the motion for the rotor. Thanks for any help. Maybe I am telling her
an incorrect way to do this?

RE: the cost of staying connected

2017-05-27 Thread Chip Orange
Hi Deidre,

This is an excellent point, especially since so many people who are blind are
unemployed or under employed.

My wife does just what you suggest BTW, and a basic phone from someone like
Virgin Mobile (prepaid) is only $20 every 90 days! Yes, only $80 per year if
you don't talk a lot. It also includes texting, so, if you aren't spending a
lot of time on the phone, mobile prepaid phone service is essentially free.

I on the other hand own an iPhone which I paid $1000 for plus $40 a month. I
haven't even read all the replies yet, but I doubt I have anything to add other
than support for your financially practical point, which I was making years ago
to blind people who were justifying these expensive phones by saying they would
not need to purchase dedicated function stand alone devices, the phone could do
it all.

My second supporting point was that if you ever got into a financial place
where you could not afford to keep making your monthly payment, then you would
own nothing ... where-as if you had purchased a bar code reader, a color
identifier, etc., they would still continue to operate for you.

I like my phone, but I try not to fool myself, it's definitely a luxury, and if
anyone is struggling financially, then luxuries should be identified as such.

and I can do all the information sharing and web searching, social networking,
watch movies, listen to podcasts, read books, etc all on the run or away from
home. Other than phone service and texting, all of this I can do on my desktop
computer for the price of my internet service.
What would I be missing if I gave this all up? Yesterday, I seriously
thought of buying a monthly phone service for $25 and giving the rest up. Has
anyone tried doing that lately? I'd like to hear about it! Are you planning
more hikes or tandem bike rides?
How I love my phone! I love lying in bed or cleaning house and
moving my phone from room to room while I listen to a podcast, a replay of a
news show, or a book. Again, I could do all this on a desktop computer provided
the volume on my speakers reached the far rooms. I doubt I'd miss not getting
calls or texts while away from home unless I was traveling out of State.
Admittedly, the cheapest cell phone service I was able to purchase was $39 per
month so the additional cost to text and have a phone with voice over menus is
definitely superior to that.
I wonder if I've already nearly fully answered my question cause I'm
sitting here smiling broadly as I write this. Still, I conclude that I'm crazy
for putting out the money to entertain myself around the clock, not unlike an
avid TV watcher, when I could be out gardening or I could spend more time at
the gym, or finishing a novel and/or the few short stories in the works! I
could even get some kind of volunteer job. I will say that when I do work for
pay, my work being as a masseuse, I do not use my phone at all.
One good thing, I guess, is that if I go silent, friends might inquire
as to whether or not I am still alive, so for safety's sake, I guess that
detail gets racked up in the plus column.
I did not write or dictate this using my phone. I am typing away on a
full keyboard, which is far more comfortable and affords much more time for
thinking. If I could word process using a full keyboard or a dictation program
that would allow you to dictate unlimited text, I'd trash the desktop pronto.
Oh, no no no, having a iphone on the blink for the past day was bad enough,
we'll always need back up, now won't we?

restarted my phone and no luck. Anyone have any suggestions on what else I can
try to do to solve this issue?

Thanks for the recommendations. I went searching before I found these, and I
found a very accessible free app named: White Noise and Deep Sleep Sounds for
You and Baby”. When you install it, it then shows its name as just “Deep Sleep
Free”.

It has white, pink, and brown noise choices, as well as mechanical sounds such
as a fan, and a selection of nature sounds as well. I’m quite happy with it.

Re: Instacart check out question

2017-05-27 Thread Kathy Brandt
Overall had a really good experience; gave my shopper who also delivered the
items, a five star rating. It was her first time being a shopper. I am glad
that apparently they fixed the problem that some people had with doing the
rating. I was a little unsure if my selection took, but it did, as confirmed by
the email I got. I didn't know if you could handle tipping in the app or not,
still not sure, so gave her cash, but see that you can tip either through the
text messages which I set up to get, or through The email you get later.

This next it's no big deal, since primarily I'm interested in the shopping
experience, but has anyone maybe figured out how to get the directions for the
recipes? I can read the ingredients, and cool that with them you can create a
ready-made list, but even though there is an option for view directions, you
still only get the ingredient list with voiceover, even if you do a screenshot
and read with KNFB Reader.

Was really neat being able to use the chat feature as well as talk with the
Shopper over the phone while she was buying the items.

MusicStreamer App by Stratospherix

2017-05-27 Thread Alan Lemly
Hello List,

For those with limited storage space on their iDevices who want to use their
devices to play their music, I'm recommending the MusicStreamer app by
Stratospherix. The app costs $3.99 USD and will give you access to all music
on your local computer which is shared over the same wi-fi network.
Stratospherix is the same developer of the excellent FileBrowser app which
many on the list use.

MusicStreamer found all the music in my shared music folder and will handle
many music file formats. It is quick and responsive and will let you create
playlists and has an offline mode which I expect allows you to transfer
music to your device if desired. The app is easily located in the Apps Store
when searching for MusicStreamer with no spaces between music and streamer.
Or you can read about it here:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/musicstreamer/id979888370?mt=8

Re: When would you ask for an app's refund?

2017-05-27 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
Whether you ask for a refund or not I just wanted to say that while I too
have used social media to communicate with app developers it might also be
best to try to contact them via any email addresses they might have listed
in the app's settings area if it has one or in the app's description via the
app store as they might not monitor social media as closely as other
channels for reporting difficulties such as emails or web site forms.

For instance when I visited it at the app store here
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bills-monitor-bill-manager-reminder/id468993411?mt=8
I found a Bills Monitor Support link which took me here
http://www.maxwellapps.com/apps_2_bills_monitor.html
where I found an email address for contacting its developers.
I hope that helps.

Remember the other day when I recommended the Bills Monitor app, and wrote
to the devs via Twitter and so far no updates or nothing! so I wonder what's
would it take for you to ask for a refund? also if I leave the app on the
App-switcher and double-tap, as long as I don't close it, it'll stay within
the Bills menu, but if I close it, either I need to remember where the Bills
menu button was, or ask for sighted help. Would you ask for a refund, or
stick with the app, hoping someday the developper fixes it? Yes the cost is
a dollar ($19 here in Mexico); part of me wants to keep the app since as
mentiond before, the rest of the app is very accessible!--

Re: the cost of staying connected

Hi,

I get pretty much the same deal from Metro PCS for $30 including taxes and
fees. They also use the T-mobile network. They are offering two lines for
$50 a month. Thanks to WIFI, I don't come anywhere near using two gigs of
cellular data a month.

I totally agree that many want the latest and upgrading every year or
every two years is somewhat expensive. Some may argue that they have this
great plan from their provider which lets them upgrade every year, but of
course if you really look at it you will find out that no provider does
this out of the goodness of their hearts and in the end you pay through
the nose for such a privilege. Then there are those who have multiple
smartphones like an Android and an iPhone in order to "stay current with
technology" or to "have the best of both worlds". Also some have multiple
iDevices and to me that is also a waste of money. At one point I decided
to keep my old 5S around and use it at home on WiFi but I quickly realized
that I rarely did and always used my new 6S Plus anyways and while I can
see how the large screen of an iPad is attractive for sighted people, it
doesn't do much for me. I have read messages on here from people who have
a very limited income yet they have an iPhone and an iPad, an Apple TV and
multiple music and TV streaming services and I sort of wonder if they
don't realize that all of this adds up to be a pretty significant cost, at
the same time some of the same people complain about some of the expensive
apps like KNFB Reader or about paying $5 a month for having a Jaws SMA
(it's $120 every two years so it does work out to be just $5 a month which
is half of what most of us pay for Apple Music or Spotify).
I think Deidre does have a point, but unless you are mostly at home where
a landline does the trick and maybe a pay as you go flipphone is enough
for the odd time you go somewhere, I think the additional cost for a
smartphone plan is justifiable considering what a smartphone offers (GPS,
OCR anywhere you go, accessible texting etc.). For anybody who is working
or running a business it is more or less essential nowadays, I need access
to my email, often apps are easier to use than websites when it comes to
making a quick online banking transaction, posting something on Facebook,
tracking a package or even maintaining your profiles for Google My
Business and so on. At times I can actually be away from my business to do
something personal or recreational simply because I am still connected and
able to do something if I have to. In a way it's not so different for a
sighted person with cars. How many couples have a car each, it costs a lot
to buy the thing in the first place and thousands and thousands each year
for insurance, gas, parking and repairs/maintenance. Especially if you
live in the city you could probably get by using public transportation and
take a cab or an Uber when you have to, most of us who don't have sighted
partners who drive do it all the time. But being able to jump into a car
any time you want for a quick trip somewhere is just so convenient. I live
in a rather small town of about 6,000 people, our one local cab company
doesn't even use a meter, they charge $8 for a trip in town no matter if
it's half a mile from the grocery store back to my house or 2 miles from
one side of town to the other. If you do a return trip inside I think an
hour or hour and a half then it's $11 for both. My wife is sighted but has
epilepsy so can't drive either and we spend maybe $1,000 a year on cab
rides for times when the weather is bad, we have more than we can or want
to carry etc. If we owned a car I'd spend that alone on insurance let
alone buying gas, new tires or dividing the initial purchase price by the
lifespan of the vehicle.
Interestingly enough people often buy used cars, sometimes cheap old
beaters but few of us buy a used iPhone that is 2 years old even though in
many cases it would do the trick as well and it would save you a fair bit
since it is much cheaper to buy and you could get any post-paid or
pre-paid plan you want since no carrier can ask you to sign up for a
2-year contract on some expensive plan.

Sieghard

Instacart check out question

2017-05-27 Thread Kathy Brandt
Today is my first time trying to use the app. I did manage to check out, but in
the beginning, when I was in the cart, and hit check out, it was as if it
didn't know what store I had shopped in, even though I stayed just in the one
store. Then, after I had selected a time, and indicated my store, it just
stayed on the selected time, and I couldn't find any place to proceed further.
I had previously set up my payment method and address. I ended up having to
close out of the app completely, Bring up the cart again, and then was able to
do it, after working with it a little to make sure it stayed on the time I
wanted. Was this a temporary glitch, or is there an exact procedure for how you
go through the checkout process? Thanks.

Re: the cost of staying connected

2017-05-27 Thread Kelly Pierce
Dear Ed,

It's 2 gigs of data with unlimited texting and calls. If a blind end
user accesses WIFI regularly, he would likely not need more than this
amount of data. I use a company called TPO Mobile. it is an MVNO on
the T-Mobile network.

Re: When would you ask for an app's refund?

2017-05-27 Thread Hope Paulos
Hi! If the application is in accessible, I would ask for a refund. You do not
need a receipt from Apple to ask for a refund.
Call the main Apple number, and ask to speak to the iTunes department. Explain
the issue you're having with the application and they will provide you with a
refund. You will receive the refund in up to 10 business days.

Hope Paulos
PS, I work for the iTunes department…

Re: When would you ask for an app's refund?

I believe in your emailed receipt, there is a place to ask for a refund. You
could just set Calendar reminders to repeat monthly on a certain date to remind
you to pay your bills.

Re: setting up new phone from I Tunes backup, done

2017-05-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Not all content will be captured in a backup. Apps will be reinstalled
for example and music needs to be resynced.

On 26/05/17 19:57, deidre muccio wrote:

One hitch I encountered with setting up the new phone is that my
BARD downloads did not transfer from an I Tunes backup or never got back
upped. I just downloaded the book I have been reading. I also don't remember
what was discussed concerning the locked screen with the newest update. I
always manually lock my screen and like it that way. I don't recognize
anything in the settings that pertains to that, at least not using the old
language. I no longer get any voice over telling me the screen is locked
when I try to lock the phone the old way. All I hear is hit the home button
to open. I did not set a new password and don't want to do the
authentication thing. It took me forever to close that out.
The replacement phone came with a new sim card, but as soon as the
old one got popped into the new phone, it worked just fine, and I
immediately started to get notified of recent calls and voice messages. The
process really couldn't have been simpler though I was unfamiliar with it. A
few things alarmed me, like being told I could be charged up to $500 if
"find my phone" was not turned off breaking the link to I Cloud. They also
wanted the phone reset to factory defaults, and stripped of the sim card. I
worried that if the phone would not turn on which was the original problem,
that if I had already turned find my iphone off, then I would not be able to
do anything more remotely that would affect that phone. That juggled around
in my head for awhile while I tried to decide what to do first. Come
morning, the phone better turn on and once on, down it goes, and into the
return envelope it will go.

If it were me, I would ask for the refund until you know for a fact that that

Can anyone recommend a bag with neckstrap for my iPhone 7 Plus. I would like a
bag, where I can control all buttons. It would be great with some card slots
too.

Best regards Annie.

Re: language learning apps accessebility

2017-05-27 Thread Brandon Olivares
Duolingo is definitely very accessible. I learned French using Duolingo, and
now am learning German.

If you want to learn languages though, I really suggest Italki. They have
language teachers there that aren't too expensive and you'll make progress a
lot more quickly. With Duolingo combined with Italki, I've been making good
progress with German.

language learning apps accessebility

2017-05-27 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi everyone,
I am trying to learn a bit of italian sure there is google translate but
something more structured would be nice. I tried duolingo and rocket languages
on ios but both dont seem to be too accessible with voiceover. With duolingo
especially I wanted to select italian but the only language I could seem to
find and select is English…
Any help and tips on alternatives would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Greetings, Anouk,

Autocorrect?

2017-05-27 Thread Harry Bell
Has anyone else noticed this bug? In ios 10.3.2. on iphone 7 Plus, i like to
have autocorrect turned ON but every other day i start composing a message and
discover that the setting has turned itself OFF. I go into Settings and turn
auto correct back on - but in a day or two, the same problem happens. Thanks.
Harry
