Getting rid of Flash messages

2017-11-20 Thread turab chimthanawala
Hi all
Is there a way to deactivate flash messages? I keep getting them
indicating the mobile data consumed. They are a huge nuisance as they
pause ongoing applications or tend to hang the phone.
Best

RE: Audible and Amazon Echo

2017-11-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Thanks, Marie, it wasn't clear to me since you originally said: Yes Amazon
music is available on the Echo if you are a prime member
I will have to call Sonos tomorrow because I'm in Canada and if I go into the
Music Services there is no Amazon Music option.

nothing much is said about using Audible or, for that matter, Kindle

Also, for those who have any of the Echo speakers, have you used a

Anyone know if Kodi and any of the various extensions are at all accessible?

Sieghard and others,

I don't listen to Kindle books with my Echo but I've gotten to where I read
most of my Audible books with it. And you can ask Alexa to rewind an Audible
book a desired time period. I've asked her to successfully rewind 30 seconds
up to 5 minutes and it worked fine.

Actually Echo can play many Kindle books but not all. It has no navigation
in Kindle books though. The only navigation it has in Audible is by chapter
so I don't think it's that useful. And, you cannot change the speed of the
books which some people want to do. But if you don't mind just reading

Hi,

How good is the integration between Audible and the Echo/Alexa? I
assume since Audible is owned by Amazon it should be perfect, but
nothing much is said about using Audible or, for that matter, Kindle
books on an Echo.

Also, for those who have any of the Echo speakers, have you used a
wired and also a bluetooth headset for private listening? I assume it
should work just fine?

Is there any way to get Tune in premium to play on my Sonos system? I have
radio by Tune in on the browse menu but it does not appear to be the premium
version. I would love to listen to the NFL games like I do the MLB games.

Well, time does fly, and I stand corrected once again. I do like that I can
listen to my Kindle books that way. I'm keeping my Windows computer because
of the Codex program to convert books for VDR. Maybe I won't need to do
that so much now.

Thanks everybody,

Actually Echo can play many Kindle books but not all. It has no navigation
in Kindle books though. The only navigation it has in Audible is by chapter
so I don't think it's that useful. And, you cannot change the speed of the
books which some people want to do. But if you don't mind just reading
straight through the book, it works OK with Audible and with some Kindle
books. I think there are much better ways to do Audible.

Re: Audible and Amazon Echo

2017-11-20 Thread Mary Otten
Kindle books are played using the Alexis built invoice. Audible books play and
sync up quite nicely with your other devices. So, let’s say you are doing
something in the kitchen, which is where my echo is located. You get done in
there I want to go somewhere else. Your phone or whatever else you use to play
Audible will be right in line with where you left off using Alexa to play or
audible book. There is an a lot of decent navigation like rewinding at Cetera,
as has been pointed out. I don’t use the feature that much, but it works well
for what it is.

Hi,

How good is the integration between Audible and the Echo/Alexa? I assume
since Audible is owned by Amazon it should be perfect, but nothing much
is
said about using Audible or, for that matter, Kindle books on an Echo.

Also, for those who have any of the Echo speakers, have you used a wired

also a bluetooth headset for private listening? I assume it should work

fine?

Re: Audible and Amazon Echo

2017-11-20 Thread Deb Lewis
Actually Echo can play many Kindle books but not all. It has no
navigation in Kindle books though. The only navigation it has in
Audible is by chapter so I don't think it's that useful. And, you
cannot change the speed of the books which some people want to do. But
if you don't mind just reading straight through the book, it works OK
with Audible and with some Kindle books. I think there are much better
ways to do Audible.

I would say that she is using her Echo as a speaker for her phone. If you
do that, you can play any app your phone can play. That is my guess anyway.

Re: Amazon Echo devices

2017-11-20 Thread Denny Schwab
Hi,

What does the hub in the Echo Plus give you? We have an Echo Dot
currently, and were planning on getting a few more since we were
liking it so far. We are also getting two Nest Learning Thermostats,
a Roku, a Roomba, and a few other items that say they work with Alexa.
Do we need the hub to work with these other devices, or will the Echo
Dot do just fine? We don't really care about the speaker quality,
since we too have the Sonos around the house.

RE: Favorite VO voices?

2017-11-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As many have pointed out, what you think of the various TTS voices is highly
subjective. I use Eloquence with Jaws, but if I want a higher quality voice I
certainly find quite a few of the Vocalizer voices you can download for use
with Jaws very good and definitely not sucks. I think this is one area where we
all just have to agree that we disagree in what we like or don't like.

let's put it this way. pretty much all vocaliser sucks, particularly the newer
ones. Samantha is kind of tolerable, Kate has some weird emotions, presumably
because she was once a loquendo TTS, but the rest, no hope. I wish we had
acapela, but even in acapela, most of the males sound flat and depressing.
Sharon is just too deep. and don't get me started on ivona. as for NeoSpeech,
Kate sounds angry, she almost sounds like she's yelling at you. LOL that's
probably enough from me.

Mich,

A quick Google search for “Amazon Echo on BestBuy.ca” gave me a link to the
“Amazon Echo Store” on the canadian Best Buy
site where you
apparently can also preorder any of the 3 Echo speakers for the introductory
price.
I would still order from Amazon directly, though, it’s their product and they
offer a great return policy so why not get it from them.

Take care,

Subject: Amazon Echo devices

Hi,

As Alexa is going to finally make it to Canada on December 5,
Amazon.ca now has the Echo Dot, Echo and Echo Plus for sale at a special
preorder price.

Could some of you from the States or other countries where Alexa has been
available explain a bit why I might want to own at least one Echo Plus which it
is said has a built-in smart home hub? Or do I even want one of these?
How is the sound on the Echo Dot, I understand it is meant to be connected to
other speakers or maybe even a receiver, but there is also mention that it has
a small built-in speaker, is that pretty OK for say listening to Podcasts or an
Audible book?
I am still potentially looking at buying a sonos 1 as well, but for some reason
I thought the Echo speakers were more expensive so especially the echo Dot at
an introductory price of $49.99 Canadian (regularly $69.99 after the
introductory special is over) might be a good choice. The regular Echo is on
for $99.99 (regular price will be $129.99 and the Echo Plus is on for $169.99
(regular $199.99).
I like the fact that all speakers apparently have a 3.5mm output jack and also
can send audio to a bluetooth headset. This might totally be the way how I
might listen to Audible books, insjtead of having to use my iPhone with headset
when I go to bed I could have an Echo Dot or Echo beside the bed and use it
either with a wired or bluetooth headset.
It also mentions any of the Echo speakers can do “Free audio calls to Canada,
the US and Mexico”. Does this mean I can tell it to call a particular number
just like I tell SIRI or can it even call a business just by saying call so and
so company?

Best regards,
Sieghard

RE: Amazon Echo devices

2017-11-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Thanks, Deb, that was a very good summary and I am glad you mentioned that I
could plug an Echo Dot into Sonos.
I did sort of read a bit more after I sent my message and read about the Echo
Plus. We have a bunch of Philipps Hue lights and while I am not totally sure
about this, it sounds almost like you wouldn't need the Philipps Hue bridge if
you have an Echo Plus with the smart home hub, but then again we of course
already have the Philipps Hue Bridge and I also assume that if I removed it
maybe the lights wouldn't respond to SIRI any more?
I forgot about the Tap, it was not even listed, but it sounds from what you
said it's still being developed?
I think I will probably order one of each, an Echo Plus which for $169 right
now also comes with 1 Philipps Hue bulb as a bonus and then we'll probably get
an echo and a Dot and this way we can just test them and use them for a week or
so and I assume Amazon's return policy applies if we decide we don't need the
Echo Plus, for example. I am not overly concerned with the sound quality since
we do have Sonos throughout the house and while at $169.99 the Echo Plus is
still $70 cheaper than a Sonos 1, I believe we might get more use out of the
Sonos 1.
I like the idea of the intercom function, I think they call it Drop In, where
you can just ask Alexa to drop in with another Echo in your house and you can
talk just as with an intercom.
Might even get a couple of Echo Dot at my store to use them for that, even if
you primarily use it as an Intercom for $49.99/each that is not bad at all.
I have a feeling that if these things work as good as I expect they will that
for using them for our Hue lights and the new Honeywell Lyrick T5 thermostat I
should get in a week or so these will be easier to use than SIRI via the phone
since they are always there ready to be used. Yes, Hey SIRI works well on the
phone as well, but often I have my phone in my pocket or belt holster and Hey
SIRI works only if the phone's screen isn't covered.

Sieghard

I believe the deals are only on Amazon but the easiest way to figure that out
is to check other sites.
OK. So here's my run down on the Echo family.
If you want to use A for smart home stuff I highly recommend one Echo Plus so
you'll ahve the hub built in. It's a lot of crap otherwise.
But it's really easy and efficient with the plus. You only need one Plus. Once
you've got a hub, everything else will use it. Kind of like a router for your
modem. Th ePlus is the best sounding Echo as well so all in all I'd go for that.
So then the real question is about the Echo 2 aqnd the dots. Dots are
inexpensive, they'll sound cheap because they have no base at all. But you can
plug them into something else including your Sonos, so that's OK. Amazon thinks
you should just put htose around. So again, depending on how smart you plan to
make your home, Dots are useful to ut in rooms where she needs to hear you give
a command to something.
The Echo 2 sounds much better than the dot but not as good as the plus. It's
twice the price of the Dot in the states and you don't quite get what you pay
for. But still, if you're going to actually listen to music on it and if you're
not plugging into something else, they're significantly better than the Dot.
The Tap is still in production too. It sounds pretty good. Not quite as good as
the Plus but actually better then the Echo 2 I think. And it's portable. But it
has limitations with respect to your smart home plan.

Reflection sounds so mediocre. I could not believe Apple created this as an
iPhone X exclusive. With the money it has, it could have hired great composers
and musicians to create memorable iPhone ring tones for the iPhone X. After
hearing reflection for the first time, I was motivated to learn how to create
my own ring tones using MP3 Direct Cut and online conversion services. I now
have a set of 30 second clips I use as ring tones from some of the best music
in jazz and rock and roll from people like Eric Clapton, Joe cocker, Todd
Rundgren, Bob Dylan, The Band, Miles Davis, Kenny Burrell and the Beatles.

No, Pablo, you are correct, people won't buy it for the ringtone, but
they'll buy it because the iPhone X is the best, fastest smartphone

Re: Favorite VO voices?

2017-11-20 Thread rajmund .
let's put it this way. pretty much all vocaliser sucks, particularly the
newer ones. Samantha is kind of tolerable, Kate has some weird emotions,
presumably because she was once a loquendo TTS, but the rest, no hope. I
wish we had acapela, but even in acapela, most of the males sound flat
and depressing. Sharon is just too deep. and don't get me started on
ivona. as for NeoSpeech, Kate sounds angry, she almost sounds like she's
yelling at you. LOL that's probably enough from me.

sherin drives me nuts. Again, way, way, way too deep for my taste. Ava sort of
has the same problem for me. I can't stand Nuance's Alison, either--she sounds
so pissed off to me. You want to hear another seductive-type voice, listen to
NeoSpeech Julie. She sounds all breathy. A friend of mine really likes her, but
I'm not really a fan. I pull a face every time I visit a Chase ATM, because
she's the voice on there. Ugh. If they'd gone with Kate or James when they
switched from Eloquence, I'd be happier.

snotty teenager. Sorry for the stereotype, but there you go. And there are
other voices like Ava and Sharon, for instance, that I think must have been
made to appeal to men, because they sound like they’re trying to be seductive.

For now, though, I use compact Samantha. I can't stand her HQ version. She says
things all weird. she has weird up/down inflections in her voice between words
and within words. A ton of the Acapela voices have this issue, too. It's why I
can't stand Heather. The Ivona voices have this issue too, somewhat. But
probably my biggest issue with them is that they're so flatbe it's why Sally
drives me nuts. She's pleasant enough to listen to, if you can get over how
incredibly bored she sounds.

The other voices I use are conpact Karen (the same issues I have with HQ
Samantha I also have with HQ Karen) and the HQ version of the old female
British English Siri voice. Funnily enough, I actually prefer her HQ version.

Speaking of HQ old Siri voices, has Apple fixed the issue of not being able to
use these voices in other apps, like Voice Dream Reader and the Blindfold
games? I'd really love to use the HQ version of the old British English Siri
voice in these apps, but I can't. Either she doesn't show up, or when selected,
doesn't work, and the LQ version is used instead.

How To Download iPhone X Exclusive Reflection Ringtone And Then Set As
Default On Any iPhone By Paul Morris | November 2nd, 2017

Here's how you can download the official iPhone X exclusive Reflection
ringtone and then set it as default on an iPhone.

It was recently discovered that Apple's brand new flagship ships with
a new default ringtone called Reflection which is exclusive to that
particular device. As always, the Internet wasn't having that and it's
now available to obtain and load onto other iOS
