RE: Anyone encountering this issue with alarms with iOS 11.1.2?

2017-11-21 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Feliciano,

I cannot reproduce your bug on my 8 Plus running the latest version of iOS 11.

I can toggle the alarms on and off and the settings take effect, perfectly.

I can also easily dismiss an alert, in the same way I have done in all previous
versions of iOS.

Mark

Hi,
I have an iPhone 6s with iOS 11.1.2. There is a bug with the alarms on the
clock app when using the VoiceOver screen reader. Anyone else in countering
this issue? I have already reported this bug to Apple accessibility.

I have set alarms to go off at a certain time throughout the week (Mon-Fri)
When disabling a 5:00Am, 5:15AM or 5:30AM alarm from turning on, the alarm does
not toggle off or on. I find myself closing the clock app from the app switcher
and reopening it in order for it to work.

It has gotten to the point that I have to command Siri to enable or disable
such alarm that I have saved.

In effort to remedy the problem, I have tried hard reset, and reset all
settings with no success.

It does say "text field is editting" and if I remember correctly, if I tap

Subject: Re: Word Ladder

There is an edit field, just above the keyboard, which sits just below the
clues, in other words, if you flick through the clues one by one, you'll
eventually get to the edit field, however, as Melanie stated, there is not
an actual spot to enter your answers if your answer is correct, you'll hear
the tone that indicates you've got the answer right. If you hear no tone,
the answer is wrong.

Unfortunately, short of flicking through the clues one by one, you won't
know which of the clues is correct save by listening to which clue is filled
in.

So, you listen to the clue, input the answer, if you hear a tone, you've got
the answer correct, so you go back up to the clues and read the next clue,
then fill in the answer again, and so on.

Good luck.

Subject: Word Ladder

When looking in my iPhone's app store last night, I find that there is a,
long-awaited, update to
Word Ladder, so I have activated it.
I have an exceedingly short term memlory when it comes to computer-generated
things, and as I
haven't played Word Ladder for, at least 6 months: maybe much longer, I
have forgotten how to.
I do remember the basic premise, ie, changing one letter in the word to
match the given clue, but
the rest of it eludes me, like how do I enter the word?
In the updated game that I was looking at, November 21st, apart from the
featured wordlist, there
was what appeared to be a separate list of, in this case, tools, so it read
as "bullet: tool for
perforating metal"? bullet", "bullet, Tool for telling the time? bullet" etc
etc. Does anyone know
just where this fits in?

Re: Serious Radio do you use the iPhone or a standalone radio for at home use

2017-11-21 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
It is my understanding that you’d still have to have a real radio on your plan
to get sports channels along with the music but you could have music through
the online package a plenty. And truthfully I find Tune In’s sports offerings
preferable as they have a shorter delay so when listening in real time they’re
closer to the actual experience for instance if you’re following along on
social media. but if music and talk is more what you’re after the online
packages would fill the bill. So in summary It is my understanding that the
sonos would act like an online player only.

This seems like a silly question, however, does the Sonos act as a hardware
medium or an internet medium for Sirius radio? For example back before the
merger I had a Polk radio for XM. Now I live in an absolute dead zone. Even
taxi drivers lose their signals when they drive in to this complex to pick me
up. I have considered Sirius before but the online only package did not provide
all of the sports choices that were available with a radio plus online. There
is no way I can use a traditional radio in this apartment.

However, I recently purchased a Sonos One. And other than a few quirks now and
then I am very happy with it. And I saw today that there are about 155 stations
available on Sirius for the sonos One. If that is true it has me wondering
where that lies in the scheme of things as far as packages of stations go.

RE: Google home verses the echo

2017-11-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jeremy,

What exactly do you want to “sync” from your iPhone to the Google Home? I don’t
think either the Amazon Echo speakers nor the Google Home actually store
anything, they are just the portal to the services offered.

Here is an interesting comparison article which summarizes the various aspects
of the Echo/Alexa versus the Google Home/Google Assistant quite nicely:
https://www.imore.com/google-home-vs-amazon-echo

I should mention that now that Alexa is available in Canada (at least it will
be in two weeks) my wife and I decided to go with the Alexa. Primarily it is
because of the huge compatibility with home automation and, as is pointed out
in the article, because there is lots of overlap here with Apple’s Home Kit.
Another big factor for me is privacy and while I like how much I can ask Google
using the Google app, I simply don’t trust them as far as I can throw them. It
is Google’s business to collect as much data and information about you as
possible because that is how they make their money. Yes, Amazon also has reason
to lear about your habits and preferences, but maybe not quite as much as
Google. Of course in that area I trust Apple the most because Apple makes their
money from selling awesome hardware (for the most part) and from their
ecosystem namely the App Store and iTunes. They are huge advocates and
defenders of people’s privacy and anything that is Home Kit compatible is
probably as secure as it currently gets. Unfortunately the Apple HomePod is
still months away and when it does come who know what it can do giving Apple’s
self-imposed limitations. Alexa clearly has the longest history and incredible
support from third party developers and you find a huge number of “skills”
which make your Echo smarter and more useful.

Lastly, in terms of cost the Amazon Echo probably has Google beat as well, you
can get an Echo Dot for $49.99, a regular Echo is $99.99 and the Echo Plus with
its built-in smart home hub and better sound quality is $169.99 I think and at
least here this currently includes a bonus Philipps Hue smart Light bulb which
costs $14.99. Google now has their Google Maxi or whatever they call it which
is supposed to sound very nice, but it is also expensive and if you have some
existing stereo or good speakers or, even better, a Sonos system, then your
Echo Dot for $49 can connect to any of those and you get great sound along with
all the smarts of Alexa for a relatively low price.

Take care,
Sieghard

Re: Serious Radio do you use the iPhone or a stand alone radio for at home use

2017-11-21 Thread Paul Ferrara
There is a directory; however, the channels you actually can access varies with
each plan.
For instance, a streaming subscription, which I believed gave you all Internet
channels, does not; some are restricted only to the All Access plan which
requires a home or car radio.
You really have to know what you want and what you don’t want. For music, only,
it’s not a big issue; if you want sports, the waters are much more merky and
hard to navigate.

Re: Word Ladder

2017-11-21 Thread Victor Gouveia

Good luck.

Victor

Re: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread Mary Otten
You know, this isn’t going to be very helpful, I think you hold the back button
after the Fire TV is connected. There is an exact explanation on the Amazon
website. I think if you Google voice view FireTV you’re going to find it. It’s
very simple. It’s just that I did it several months ago, so I don’t
remember. They describe the remote layout and with the different keys do you
etc. And they tell you about voicemail. Very straightforward stuff.

Re: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread Mary Otten
Interesting. I think my only experience with A.D. on the fire stick has been
with Amazon prime series Harry Bosch. I haven’t listen to that much audio
description on either one, but it did seem to me, and this could be strictly
based on whatever series I was watching, that the audio description with the
Apple TV really messed with the sound. That is the stereo or whenever it was
wasn’t that good. Whereas with Amazon, it seems better. It could be series
dependent, or I could be crazy.

Word Ladder

2017-11-21 Thread Jewel
When looking in my iPhone's app store last night, I find that there is a,
long-awaited, update to
Word Ladder, so I have activated it.
I have an exceedingly short term memlory when it comes to computer-generated
things, and as I
haven't played Word Ladder for, at least 6 months: maybe much longer, I have
forgotten how to.
I do remember the basic premise, ie, changing one letter in the word to match
the given clue, but
the rest of it eludes me, like how do I enter the word?
In the updated game that I was looking at, November 21st, apart from the
featured wordlist, there
was what appeared to be a separate list of, in this case, tools, so it read as
"bullet: tool for
perforating metal"? bullet", "bullet, Tool for telling the time? bullet" etc
etc. Does anyone know
just where this fits in?

Re: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread lenron brown
I am really considering trying the fire tv stick. How would I go about
enabling voice view? I have the apple tv 4th gen, but I am thinking
about giving it back to it's original owner and trying something new.
I had a few issues with it not long ago that annoyed me a bit. Signing
in to my Youtube use to be broken, I had to get someone sighted to log
me in. I have no brand loyalty, I like to switch it up and use what
fits me better at the time. It would have been nice if aAmazon and
apple played nice a while ago to bring us the amazon video app on the
apple tv.

RE: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi Mary.

I prefer the Apple TV for a couple of reasons. One is what you said, AirPlay
since I have so many Apple devices here. The other is that I prefer the way
Audio Description is implemented via their Movies app. If I rent a movie, my
preference for AD is remembered and I don’t have to specifically choose AD
under languages. That hasn’t been my experience on the Fire TV.

My conversation with Sonos and interesting facts about Airplay

2017-11-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

I just had my return call from Sonos. For those who didn't see my earlier
email, I was wondering why Amazon Music is not an option for us here in Canada
in the Sonos app.
The support person I spoke with told me that they are currently working on this
and that as soon as Sonos can support Alexa on their new Sonos 1 player Amazon
Music will also be added as an available music service for us here in Canada.
Apparently there is still some sort of restriction they are working on with
Amazon.
I also asked about the Sonos 1 in general and at this point there are
definitely some restrictions when it comes to Alexa and skills. Sonos was
hoping that the Sonos 1 would be just like an Echo from day 1, but that
apparently was not possible again because of various limitations Amazon imposes
and which Sonos is working on getting resolved.
For example, currently only 6 music services can be voice controlled via the
Sonos 1 player, making audio calls is currently not possible and there are some
other restrictions.
The Sonos rep told me just as another one did before that it is the goal of
Sonos to support all major voice assistants and home automation standards
including Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Cortana and also home automation
services/standars such as Control 4, Logitech, Nest and so on. Ultimately even
Apple with SIRI and hOme Kit integration, but knowing Apple that is probably
going to happen last.
Interestingly enough you don't need a Sonos 1 player to integrate Alexa and
Sonos since via an Alexa skill it is apparently possible or going to be
possible to take an existing Echo or Echo dot and wirelessly ingegrate it with
your Sonos system.
Since I just ordered 2 Echo Dots, one Echo and one Echo Plus (not sure if I
keep all of them, but I thought best way to find out what I want is to try it)
I look forward to trying this out when I get them on December 5 which is the
official date when Alexa will work here in Canada.

As far as Airplay is concerned I thought the new Sonos 1 speaker supported
Airplay 2. However, currently this is not so because Sonos and Apple are still
working on making this happen.
I was always under the impression that Airplay required compatible hardware,
basically that a speaker would have to have some sort of "modem" or whatever
you want to call it which allows for the Airplay feature to function.
However, this apparently is not so because the Sonos rep told me that once
Apple and Sonos work this out, Sonos will simply release a software update and
this will make all Sonos players even older ones into Airplay 2 capable devices.

All in all this is good news and there is lots to look forward to for Sonos
fans in 2018 and the next few years to come. He told me unofficially that he
believes once Alexa functionality has been improved and Airplay 2 was rolled
out that bringing the Google Assistant to Sonos would probably be next on the
list.

Sieghard

Re: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread Mary Otten
You can do a lot with Alexa with respect to searching for movies etc. Also,
Netflix is outstandingly accessible. It had an issue, but it was quickly fixed,
actually faster than a similar issue when Apple had it with the sign in
process. Anyway, I think the accessibility for apps is fairly comparable, at
least for those I use. And there are definitely lots of things out there that I
don’t use, so I can’t comment on all that.

RE: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Rick can give his reasons, but mine would probably be that I enjoy using SIRI
for asking to find a particular movie or something on Youtube, there are a lot
of accessible apps and while I don’t know the Fire TV, Im not sure if it has
apps like the ‘Apple TV for playing content say from CBC News, Engaged, The
Verge and many other tech sites/sources, how accessible is Netflix on it (a
very good experience on the Apple TV), same goes for Youtube and then of course
there is the fact that with my Apple TV I can access photos and videos I have
on my computer and I can Airplay to it.

RE: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would say the Apple TV is 100% accessible. Just because all apps are not
accessible does not mean the device isn’t. If you go by accessibility of apps
you would also have to say the iPhone is not 100% accessible.
Anyhow, I guess it comes down to interpretation and semantics.

Index embosser version five used with an iPhone?

2017-11-21 Thread Mary Otten
I think there are a few people on hthese lists who have the newest index
embosser, that is version five, either an Everest or a basic D. The big new
thing with this iteration of the index embosser is supposed to be the fact that
they have included direct braille in the machine, which means you don’t need a
third-party translation software. And you are supposed to be able, therefore,
to print from a wireless device, such as an iPhone. I’m just wondering how well
this works in practice. Is the translation software decent? I wouldn’t expect
it to be as full featured as something like Duxberry, which cost 500 or $600.
But if you don’t need to do complicated things like tables, I would hope that
the included translator would be good enough. Comments?
Mary

Re: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Rick,
I’m curious why you prefer your AppleTV fourth-generation over the fire TV
stick. I to have both of those, and these days, I think I actually prefer the
fire stick. Of course I don’t take a vantage of the music sending etc. that I
could do with my AppleTV, so perhaps that’s why. Nothing against the Apple TV.
But if I hadn’t already purchased one, I don’t think I would get one now,
because it seems like the fire stick does everything I wanted to do, and it was
a lot cheaper.

RE: Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

2017-11-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Well, it’s definitely a good thing that so many popular off-the-shelf devices
are now accessible, competition is always good for innovation, but let’s not
forget that ultimately we do have Apple to thank for that.
I just checked on Amazon.ca and was surprised that they are selling the Fire TV
stick here in Canada for $39.99, Amazon certainly hasn’t been all that good
about making their products and services available in other countries. I will
just wait until the Apple TV will get the Amazon Prime Video app, given all the
announcements going back quite a long time I really can’t see how that will be
too much longer. I just don’t feel like continueing to buy all these gadegets
which basically do the same thing just maybe in a different way unless it’s
absolutely necessary. Sames goes for the Chromcast devices, they are
inexpensive and seem to work well and the approach that you start something
from an app on the phone and then the Chromcast takes over is I think quite
innovative and nice, but as I said, it’s just another device which I need to
find a port for and my 9-year old Sony 40 inch LCD TV only has 2 HDMI inputs
which we use for our Apple TV and for my wife’s TFC set top box (that’s “The
Filipino Channel”). As far as I can tell that’s simply an Android box
customized for their purposes, but if we wanted to add anything else we also
would have to buy a good HDMI splitter and on and on.

Sieghard

Hi.

The fire TV is actually quite accessible. It uses VoiceView as its screen
reader also found on their tablets. I have both the fire TV and apple TV 4th
gen and still prefer the apple TV but the Fire TV is actually quite good as
well, especially if you have Prime Video.

I don’t think so. I do have an Apple TV fourth generation, although I don’t use
it that much frankly. But I do scan the technical press every day, and I
haven’t seen anything about the release. So I don’t think they have. Frankly I
think the fire TV stick is a better deal at this point as opposed to the Apple

RE: Audible and Amazon Echo

2017-11-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Absolutely, I have been enjoying Sonos and the music services offered since I
bought my first Sonos players in the fall of 2009 which was right after I
bought my first iOS device, an iPod Touch 3rd Generation. That is now 8 years
ago and I initially bought what is now called the Connect and Connect Amp and
which then was called the ZP90 and ZP120 (ZP stood for "ZonePlayer). I also
ordered their touch screen remote at the time thinking I could use some of the
functions, but that was hopeless and I returned it because even then they
already offered their great return/satisfaction guarantee.
When they came out with the first portable player which then was called the S5
and which now is the Play 5 I bought one of them and I later on added more
Connect and Connect Amp units. Nowadays I would of course have just bought a
couple of Play 1 or Play 3 instead, but those were not an option then.
At some point Sonos also had a set of bookshelf speakers and they also released
an iPhone dock with a 30-Pin connector (that was pre-Lightning connector) and
it acted as it's own Sonos device. That was the only Sonos purchase I regret, I
still have this kicking around somewhere and fortunately it was relatively
inexpensive as far as Sonos gear goes, I think it was $120 or $150 canadian at
the time. I should probably check eBay and see if people are selling these
things and if there are still people who The nice thing is that even my players
from 8 years ago still get all updates and they are all working flawlessly.
I previously mentioned that the new Sonos 1 had native Airplay 2 support,
apparently that is not yet true, but from what I read Sonos will enable this
via a software update in 2018.
And, lastly, I still don't see Amazon Music as an option. Of course Canada
didn't even have Spotify and so on for the longest time, it's probably only
been about 4 or 5 years that it is available, but since I can download the
Amazon Music app on my iPhone from the canadian app store and now that Amazon
Prime is available here and includes Amazon Music and Prime Video I don't see
why it wouldn't be available
in the Sonos app. Just tried to call Sonos, but after almost half an hour on
hold I just entered my number so I assume at some point today I get a call
back.

Hello Jen, or use both the standalone radio in the phone. The standalone radio
that I have has a remote with buttons on it. I can get to the stations on the
standalone radio. The app for SiriusXM a.m. for the phone is accessible with
voiceover. It is a little bit tricky to work in the beginning. Please get back

Are use the phone and a standalone radio. The key for operation is to get a
Radio+ that has a Remote. If you have a Remote and you can punch in the

Actually Echo can play many Kindle books but not all. It has no navigation
in Kindle books though. The only navigation it has in Audible is by chapter
so I don't think it's that useful. And, you cannot change the speed of the
books which some people want to do. But if you don't mind just reading

Subject: Audible and Amazon Echo

Hi,

How good is the integration between Audible and the Echo/Alexa? I
assume since Audible is owned by Amazon it should be perfect, but
nothing much is said about using Audible or, for that matter, Kindle
books on an Echo.

Also, for those who have any of the Echo speakers, have you used a
wired and also a bluetooth headset for private listening? I assume it
should work just fine?

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: Serious Radio do you use the iPhone or a stand alone radio for at home use

2017-11-21 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
I’ve used both a stand alone radio and listen through Sonos speakers. For stand
alone I got the onyx model but not sure if it’s still made though I suspect
there are still simpler models available. The app is accessible in my view as
is the app one uses to operate a sonos system; and if using the latter no
interaction is necessary with Sirius XM’s app itself for that purpose. there is
also a skill for listening through Amazon Echo devices too.
I hope that helps.

Hi,

I am asking for a friend who is not on the group.

I am wondering for those who subscribe to serious XM radio do you use your
phone do access the stations or a stand alone radio for at home use.

If you use a stand alone radio which models are accessible for someone with no
vision and if you use the phone, is the app accessible with voiceover.

Thanks for any help you can give. She’s thinking about subscribing but I know
nothing about this.

Thanks.

I would say that she is using her Echo as a speaker for her phone. If you
do that, you can play any app your phone can play. That is my guess anyway.

One more question, for those who are in the US and have any Sonos gear, is
Amazon Music there for you as a music service?

Sieghard and others,

I don't listen to Kindle books with my Echo but I've gotten to where I read
most of my Audible books with it. And you can ask Alexa to rewind an Audible
book a desired time period. I've asked her to successfully rewind 30 seconds up
to 5 minutes and it worked fine.

Interesting, I would have thought you could at least rewind or skip by a
particular time interval like in the Audible app in addition to using chapter
navigation. I never speed up a book and I don't like reading eBooks because I
much prefer a human reader.

Actually Echo can play many Kindle books but not all. It has no navigation in
Kindle books though. The only navigation it has in Audible is by chapter so I
don't think it's that useful. And, you cannot change the speed of the books
which some people want to do. But if you don't mind just reading straight
through the book, it works OK with Audible and with some Kindle books. I think
there are much better ways to do Audible.
