Hi Mark,

Here an article from a Google search for "Apple Music annual subscription":

Apple Music adds $99 annual subscription option, saving users
$20/year

Hello Sieghard.

I did not know that one could purchase an entire year of Apple Music, at once.
If this is the case, then I will definitely be subscribing to it as I prefer an
annual subscription to a monthly one.

Okay, I'll look into it as HomePod is, for whatever reason, my preferred music
playback speaker. There's just something about that rich, elegant,
sophisticated sound that it emits.

Thank you, my friend.

Hi Mark,

I know there are a lot of replies to your message and I haven't read them.
However, let me say this, you bought the HomePod and said you enjoy it a lot.
Do yourself a favour and buy the Apple Music subscription, I believe if you
prepay for the entire year it is cheaper than $9.99 a month or maybe it's that
you can buy a gift card for a 1-year subscription for a reduced price. If you
like the HomePod as much as you said this will give you absolutely the best
experience bar none. Being able to simply tell your HomePod what you want to
listen to beats using another app and Airplay in my humble opinion.

Sieghard

Hello Everyone,

Okay, I know I said that I had no plans to subscribe to Apple Music, anytime
soon but, well, let's just say I'm reconsidering this position.

The primary reason why I didn't feel the need to subscribe to a music service
is because, once upon a time, one could create custom radio stations based on
artists, genres, a song title, etc, in iTunes. Apparently, Apple has now
restricted this functionality to only Apple Music subscribers.

(smart).

Before I take the subscription plunge, I would like to consider free
alternatives if for no other reason but that I know that I will use the custom
selection feature rarely.

So, is anyone using either the free version of either Pandora or Google Play
Music for iOS? If so, is it possible to create custom stations based on
selected criteria?

I'm probably going to end up subscribing to Apple Music but wanted to at least
put this question out there, in the Ether (smile).

All replies greatly appreciated.

By the way, I'm still loving my HomePod.

Went over to a friend's house today to check out the Amazon Echo. Wow! I was
extremely impressed.

I think I'm going to pick up an Echo Dot and use it at least until my beloved
Siri can catch up, as I truly think she will, in time-a very, very long, long
time perhaps, (big smile). Really enjoyed the audio games that Echo offers.

The way I see it, I will use HomePod for audio playback and personal contact
features, as they become available, and Echo Dot for fun.

RE: Mark on Echo

2018-02-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mark,

What is your reason for the Echo Plus? It is the same as the Echo but with
built-in smart hub which is supposed to help connect to various smart home
devices (if you have them).
We also bought one but when I bought it during the introductory offer here in
Canada it came with a Philipps Hue bulb so that was a bit of an incentive. So
far I still have to figure out if that smart home hub is actually doing
anything, I don't think it does in our case since we also have the 4th gen
Apple TV which acts as a hub for our smart home devices.

RE: A nice recorder

2018-02-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Same here, never seen a recorder in Dropbox. I assume he is referring to the
app RecUp which up until about a year and a half or 2 years ago was called
"Dropvox", note the spelling with a "v" instead of a "b". However, these two
apps had absolutely nothing to do with each other in terms of who made them,
Dropvox or now RecUp is made by a third-party developer who simply chose to
integrate the recording app to work very seamlessly with Dropbox.

I'm curious about your statement that Dropbox has its own recorder. I just
perused all through the Dropbox app and found no recorder.

Were you by chance referencing the recorder which used to be named DropVox but
is now called RecUp? FYI, this app is from Irradiated Software and is not from
the Dropbox developer although it does allow direct saving of recordings to
Dropbox.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I have put off updating my phone because I
didn't want to give up the Voxie Pro recorder. My favorite feature of that

I'll be giving this a test run for sure.

A buddy of mine tole me about irecorder. This is a nice app for making
recordings with multiple ways to share a recording including wifi
download which lets you download your recordings if your phone is
connected to the same wifi network as the computer that you're wanting
to use. For example I was able to go to 192.168.1.65:54602 and see a
directory of my recordings with the ability to play from there or
download. It records in m4a and the quality is nice. So I'll use this
one if I want to keep a copy on my phone and recup if I just want to
immediately send it straight to dropbox. I like irecorder because it
will show the date and time that a recording was made. The native voice
memos app only shows the date. You can still send to dropbox and other
places using irecorder.

ActiView was such an app. The problem with these types of apps is that though
many people want to use them in the theaters instead of the receivers, it seems
that the apps that have come out, support a very small number of movies. I used
the Disney Movies Anywhere app in 2016 to see Finding Dory in a theater that
did not have description. That was an amazing experience and the app just
worked like it was supposed to. Though Disney promised that one could use it
for other types of Disney, Pixar, or Star Wars movies, I tried to use it for
the 2015 Star Wars film on DVD, and it did not work. That app has since been
discontinued.

RE: iPhones and VMNO providers

2018-02-19 Thread Cristóbal
I agree. MVNOs can be a really good deal. My personal cell is with T-Mobile,
but my business iPhone is with Ting which runs off of both the Sprint and
T-Mobile networks and has a pay for what you use structure. I think I paid
something like $15 on my most recent Ting bill.
As with anything, shop around and look for the best deal which will best suit
your needs.

I have used MVNO's that run on T-Mobile and Verizon. I paid a lot less for my
service than if I had obtained it from the carrier. On Xfinity mobile, my
download speeds are 60 MBPS. I would hardly call this a throttle. It is just as
fast as my home Internet connection. While throttling did happen in the past,
it is less common now. It is true some advanced features are not available. For
example, WIFI calling is not provided by Xfinity Mobile but is offered to
Verizon customers.
This is not an issue for me though because I can call any number in the US and
Canada on WIFI from Google Hangouts. Also, Verizon customers can choose their
ring tone length but Xfinity Mobile customers have a fixed length of 30
seconds. These are small matters.
My cell phone bill was $12 last month, a fraction of the cost of Verizon.

RE: A nice recorder

2018-02-19 Thread Alan Lemly
I'm curious about your statement that Dropbox has its own recorder. I just
perused all through the Dropbox app and found no recorder.

Were you by chance referencing the recorder which used to be named DropVox but
is now called RecUp? FYI, this app is from Irradiated Software and is not from
the Dropbox developer although it does allow direct saving of recordings to
Dropbox.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I have put off updating my phone because I

app has been the ability to download recordings directly to my computer.

Backing Up My Phone To A Different Computer Than Mine

2018-02-19 Thread Arnold Schmidt
When I back up my phone to my computer, it does not back up the music that is
on it that I transfered from my hard drive to my phone, being that the music is
still on the hard drive and ITunes will restore it from my hard drive. At the
moment, I can not use my computer to back up my phone. If I use another
computer to back up my phone, will this almost 44 gig of music be backed up to
that computer, then restored to my new phone, or will it be lost? I know that
ICloud does not back it up. Thanks for any information.

Re: Is Anyone Using the Free Version of either Pandora or Google Play Music for iOS?

2018-02-19 Thread Kelly Pierce
Be careful what you wish for. The high quality sound on spotify is a
bandwidth hog. For my 40 minute work commute, it eats up more than 100
MB of data. Of course, Spotify offers a lower quality setting that
uses a lot less data. If you live in a big city and ride subways like
me, the noise inside the car means that someone is likely not going to
notice much of a difference in sound quality. I only can when I am
wearing my Beats Solo3 headphones, which cup over my entire ear. The
algorithm in Pandora that selects songs is far superior than the one
in Spotify. also check out jango Radio. the app offers unlimited skips
unlike spotify and Pandora, but the music selection in the audomatic
playlist is awful. I go to this app after I have maxed out my skips on
Pandora and Spotify.

Perhaps I am spoiled because I have Hope for Pandora on my laptop, and the
sound quality of that is very good. The difference between the sound quality of

In order to get rid of the adds, you have to subscribe to a plan. For free, I

I'm not enough of an audiophile to fuss over quality since I'm usually only
running Pandora when working out or as background music while doing something
else anyway.
As far as the app itself, it's VoiceOver accessible and you can create stations
with either a genre, artist and I'm assuming song (I've only done the first
two). Today in fact, I created a station with the German band Rammstein. Don't
use Spotify, so can't say either way on that.

Mark,
I can't answer your question about Pandora for iOS because I got the app for my
iPad Mini and deleted it shortly thereafter.
The sound quality was degraded, and I had to listen to advertising. I would
have been willing to put up with one or the other, (although I would have
prefered good sound quality and having to listen to ads rather than the other
way around), but I felt it was just too much to put up with both poor sound
quality and ads on top of that.

Well, as I said, I wouldn't mind the ads so much, but the sound quality on
the app I installed was noticeably lower than that of Tune-In.
Perhaps I am spoiled because I have Hope for Pandora on my laptop, and the
sound quality of that is very good. The difference between the sound quality
of my Hope for Pandora and the Pandora app I installed was very noticeable.

In order to get rid of the adds, you have to subscribe to a plan. For free,
I can live with a 30 secodn add every now and then. Same goes for sound
quality. I'm not enough of an audiophile to fuss over quality since I'm
usually only running Pandora when working out or as background music while
doing something else anyway.

Re: An AP For descriptive audio

2018-02-19 Thread Wayne Merritt
ActiView was such an app. The problem with these types of apps is that
though many people want to use them in the theaters instead of the
receivers, it seems that the apps that have come out, support a very
small number of movies. I used the Disney Movies Anywhere app in 2016
to see Finding Dory in a theater that did not have description. That
was an amazing experience and the app just worked like it was supposed
to. Though Disney promised that one could use it for other types of
Disney, Pixar, or Star Wars movies, I tried to use it for the 2015
Star Wars film on DVD, and it did not work. That app has since been
discontinued.

2018-02-19 Thread sherrywells1157
I use the free version of Pandora with my Google Home. The sound on the Google
Home is very good & the ads are few & far between. You can ask Pandora to play
songs by a given artist but what you get is their idea of a radio station for
that artist. Frequently I will hear one song by the artist I want for every 5
songs by others that Pandora deems similar. You can say thumbs up or down &
Pandora fine tunes the station a bit to get the sound you like. This isn’t
really too bad for free & is a good way to find new artists. I would like more
control though so am thinking of subscribing to Google play.

I was really considering buying a HOmePod. However, as I am not
subscribed to Apple Music nor am I going to subscribe anytime soon,
I was hoping that the HomePod would have a 3.5mm jack so that I
could use it with non-apple and/or legacy hardware devices such as
my iPod Nanno. What a bummer that it does not have such a port.

Perhaps I'll wait until the next generation model in hopes that they
 will permit legacy-device attachments.

 Thoughts?

soon but, well, let's just say I'm reconsidering this position.

The primary reason why I didn't feel the need to subscribe to a music
service is because, once upon a time, one could create custom radio stations
based on artists, genres, a song title, etc, in iTunes. Apparently, Apple
has now restricted this functionality to only Apple Music subscribers.
(smart).

Before I take the subscription plunge, I would like to consider free
alternatives if for no other reason but that I know that I will use the
custom selection feature rarely.

So, is anyone using either the free version of either Pandora or Google Play
Music for iOS? If so, is it possible to create custom stations based on
selected criteria?

I'm probably going to end up subscribing to Apple Music but wanted to at
least put this question out there, in the Ether (smile).

All replies greatly appreciated.

By the way, I'm still loving my HomePod.

Went over to a friend's house today to check out the Amazon Echo. Wow! I
was extremely impressed.

I think I'm going to pick up an Echo Dot and use it at least until my
beloved Siri can catch up, as I truly think she will, in time-a very, very
long, long time perhaps, (big smile). Really enjoyed the audio games that
Echo offers.

The way I see it, I will use HomePod for audio playback and personal contact
features, as they become available, and Echo Dot for fun.

Mark
