Baum made excellent displays, pity  the firm crashed.

I, too, have the larger BI display in my case the 40, and the keyboard on that

I'm still within my 30 day return window with Humanware so may decide to send
it back myself.

The Focus 14 and even for that matter the Focus 40 are fantastic.

Very well made and good keyboard with crisp key travel which isn't loud.

Here in Aussie land though it's $2300AUD a big difference from the $1350AUD
that Humanware charge.

Good luck and feel free to report back as to which way you go.

They sure did have lots of issues getting this one out the door.

The compactness is appreciated, but the keyboard of the device is very mushy,
and not at all as pleasant as say, the larger BI40 that I use.

It is however, much cheaper than the Focus 14 at least here in Australia.

Maybe it's my imagination but the connection between the display and my phone
isn't cutting out as much as it used to.

Overall not a bad display but I'd go for the Focus 14 if wanting to buy. just a
much nicer build quality than the HW offering.

taking capability and works very well with the computer.

I wanted a small display that I could use with my iPhone and my two Apple

display. But I do like the portability and the joystick when using it with the
iPhone and Apple TV(S) around the house. I also like being able to connect it
to several devices at once.

My focus 40 was recently cleaned however some of the cells are still not
working correctly and I am not willing to put any money into fixing it as I
already have the Braille Sense.

One thing I notice with the Bi14 is that if you type very fast you sometimes get a
different letter. When I typed the letters p and e in the word "type" they came
that as the letter quite. I have found this to be the case on other displays as well.

Subject: Audio Description On Dish

Hello,

I would like to hear from anyone who has Dish for their television service
in regards to being able to access audio description on those programs
that offer it.

We have been using Dish for almost a year now and for the most part we are
satisfied with it with one major exception. For some reason any programs
that are on TBS or TNT that have description we do not get the
description. There are 3 shows that my wife and I are most interested in
on these channel. On TBS The Big Bang Theory andSeinfeld(which I have just
learned is described), and on TNT Law and Order.

I keep trying to get the described versions on these shows but as of now I
have never been able to get the described versions of these shows. What is
strange is that on any other channel where there is a show with audio
description it works just fine.

I have talked several times to Dish about this but as of yet they have not
fixed this for us.

So my question to the group is: is there anyone on the list that has Dish
that is able to get audio description to work on either TBS or TNT?

Thank You,

Scott

RE: Small camera

2018-08-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
No, there is no camera on the Apple Watch.
Jessica, if Judy wanted to tell she probablywould have *smile*.
Judy, as for these types of cameras you would want something like the Go Pro or
similar which can record continuously and for hours when you rare out and
about. If you had to turn it on each time something was going on you might as
well use the video camera on your iPhone.
I heard of a guy in England who put a Go Pro on his dog's harness, it's
probably not that noticeable and this way it's always on and it will most
likely get most things in front of you and to the side, it wouldn't get
somebpody who came up from behind you and tripeed you or snatched your purse,
but let's hope it won't be needed for that.

RE: Thermostat again

I have a feeling that the Honeywell Lyric line may replace their older models
although I could be wrong here. In any case, the Lyric T5 is only I think $129

It too was about $200, but the Honeywell Total Comfort app is quite accessible
and you would need the Mac address of the thermostat to setup yr account so you
can access the thermostat from anywhere.
The thermostat itself does not talk, and physically is only adjustable with

Re: Logitech K480 bluetooth keyboard

2018-08-13 Thread Richard Turner
Well, I've had my keyboard for over a year and have not needed to change
batteries.
Have you opened the battery compartment? The batteries might be in it, but with
a plastic strip preventing them from draining.

If you haven't found out how to pair it yet, once the batteries are in, the
slide switch needs to be slid away from the battery compartment.
Then, go to the bluetooth settings on your device and make sure you know which
position the dial for selecting devices is where you want it.
Then, press and hold the button on the far right just below the slot for the
iPad. There are two retangular buttons, the iOS device one is the far right.
Hold it for several seconds and the K480 keyboard should show up on your
device, double tap it when it does and they wil pair. No codes required.

The keys on the bottom row from left to right are: control, function, options,
command, spacebar, command, options, left arrow, down arrow, right arrow. Note
that the up arrow is the top half of the down arrow.

If you press VO+K you will be in keyboard help/practice mode. You can confirm
the rest of the keys that way. Just be aware that some of the keys on the
function key row at the top will kick you out of practice mode and you will
have to go back into it to continue.

I have that keyboard.
If you bought it new from Amazon, the two triple A batteries should have been

the lid of the box.
If you haven't found out how to pair it yet, once the batteries are in, the

Then, go to the bluetooth settings on your device and make sure you know which
position the dial for selecting devices is where you want it.
Then, press and hold the button on the far right just below the slot for the

Hold it for several seconds and the K480 keyboard should show up on your
device, double tap it when it does and they wil pair. No codes required.

The keys on the bottom row from left to right are: control, function, options,

I am also a passionate sci-fi, space, physics and astronomy fan. I am not
partially sighted, I am stone cold blind. But I wasn't always like that. I
still remember summer nights when the sky was clear enough to see the Milky
Way, the planets through the lens of a telescope, and the first images of
constellations with their beautiful nebulas came out.

So I decided to write an app that allows me, blind, to find the exact
position of all these objects in the sky using 2 sensory dimensions, with an
attention to those who are partially sighted too, wherever I am located on
earth. if I look for the sun, the phone will orient me to its exact location.

Astreos is the concatenation of Astrius, god of dusk, and Eos, goddess of
dawn.

As the app is a complete 6 degree of freedom experience to find planets,
moons, manmade satellites and fragments, comets, asteroids, near earth objects,
constellations, major stars and find information about them all, I thought it
appropriate to put both gods of the sky in the same name.

This app uses connections to NASA's APIs, including the Horizons system which
follows in mission critical precision all objects within the confines of the
solar system, and updates itself automatically for the more than 118000 stars
which are visible to the naked eye, 22 other objects, including far away
galaxies, their names, categories, how they look, what chemical elements or
spectrum they have, super novas, and much more, through the largest
astronomical database, the Vizier catalogue.

The app is still in beta and I and my team are working hard to put more and
more content to the app, but more importantly, finding new ways to allow those
of us who are blind to access such information, and really have a sense of
where all of this is in the sky.

My personal experience for this has been to better understand where a lot of
stars remain almost static, how some constellations are named and why, when
they apear in the sky at what time, using my exact location. I spend a lot of
time reflecting on how to make this magic better using either visual, sound,
touch or voice.

You can listen to the frequencies coming out of every planet, and get a 3D
audio experience of major stars in the 89 constellations interpreted as chimes,
with higher pitches representing newborn stars, and clangy metallic chimes
those older stars which are cooling down. Novas are thunder rolls coursing
through the 3D space, and i am thinking of other ways to represent those stars
and their properties.

The official video will be coming out soon, but here's a quick demo audio of
me playing around with it:

Re: bluetooth keyboard recommendation

2018-08-13 Thread Kwork
I've been using the Logitech 380 keyboard for a couple of days now.

Dark gray:
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-K380-Multi-Device-Bluetooth-Keyboard/dp/B0148NPH9I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1534205524=8-1=logitech+380

Blue:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0148NPAT0/ref=twister_B0159PSADO?_encoding=UTF8=1

With prime, they're about $27. Without prime, you'll need a third party
seller, prices starting around $20 for refurbished and $33 for new at time
of writing.

Cons: Very few that I've found, so will deal with these first as they are
preference only.
No separate number pad. The numbers are on the row above the qwerty line.
There are function keys. Positive is that most work. The negative for those
wanting to use the keyboard to brighten and darken the screen won't be able
to do so with f1 or f2. F1, f2, f3 are reserved for the three channels
allowed by the keyboard, so three devices can be paired.
For those used to harder to push square keys, you'll be out of luck. Instead
of squares and rectangles for longer keys, you now will have round and oval
shaped keys, and a much more sensitive touch, so no slamming the keys in
anger. Doing so on this lightweight keyboard could possibly break something.

The positives. So far, everything else.
The touch is light.
Responsiveness is nearly immediate. The negative being that it is easily
possible to press a double letter while getting used to the lightness of
touch.
There is an on/off switch on the side.
So far, the AAA battery is lasting.
Thickness is about half of that of a regular keyboard. So is the weight.
Length is probably three inches shorter than a regular keyboard since there
is no numpad. Height is probably one inch less than a regular keyboard.

So far, well worth the purchase.

Arlene, I couldn't find the Black webb keyboards online, and a trip to
Walmart was not in our immediate future, so my wife ordered this one on her
Prime account instead. So far, very happy with it, and it's not $100. :)

I think if the keys were round and about the size of my fingers that are
small, if the keys were even just slightly bigger than my finger or about
the same size, to me, it sounds like it would be confortable to type on.

I think I'd prefer round, because there would, by necessity be a little more
separation of keys. It's all a matter of taste, said the old man who kissed

Travis, one of the bluetooth keyboards we have is the black webb keyboard.
It says it was made for the ipad, but we use it with our se iphones, and
it's really great to use with our phones, and you could buy it at Walmart
for $20. It's a very sturdy feeling keyboard, and we both enjoy typing on

Thanks. I have a Logitech wireless keyboard, and am fine with it. I'll watch
prices as I don't want to spend $100 for certain on it. I'm seeing bluetooth
keyboards on Amazon for as low as $13.99, but the more expensive ones do
seem to be rated higher overall.

2018-08-13 Thread Dave

Hi, The on off switch, on these keyboards, is for when you are traveling, and
packing your keyboard away, so the buttons don’t get pressed, as that will
activate the keyboard, and use up battery.

If you are using the keyboard, when you are not traveling, then it will go into
sleep mode, usually within a minute or 2, of inactivity.

Andy, you can tell the keys on this keyboard. You could feel the inditations
between the keys, which is a bit smaller and narrower inditation than on our
computer keyboards which I've noticed since I'm typing on my computer's
keyboard now. So you could easily tell the letters apart on this black webb
bluetooth keyboard, the inditations between the keys are just a bit smaller
and narrower and closer compared to the inditations and separate ness of the
keys on our computer keyboards and the f and j keys are clearly marked and
easy to feel and locate. What you made me think of, is you know how on some
of the button phones you almost can't tell the difference between the keys
on the number pad, due to the inditations between the keys being really
faint? This keyboard's inditation isn't faint like that, you would be able
to feel the inditation that separateness of the keys. This keyboard has a
hinged cover/lid, that when open you could place an ipad mini in the lid ,
in fact it has a round cut out for the camera, headphones, power, up down
volume and speaker. These cut outs are very neat and non intrusive. We have
more than one of these keyboards, and as we did with one of them, if you
didn't want the lid on there with a tiny screw driver you could remove the
2 tiny screws and the lid will come off. Actually we have more than one of
these keyboards, we have one of these keyboards with the lid on and the
other one with the lid off, and we like to use them either way. Placing the
ipad in the cover doesn't seem that sturdy even though this keyboard was
designed to use with an ipad. The nice thing about having the ipad in the
lid is that you can fold it all up together. We're writing this message
together. Wayne was thinking about figuring out some ways to have the ipad
placed in the lid to be more secure than it seems to be. If you were really
careful and you were using an ipad in the lid it would probably be fine. Of
course this will work with an ipad without placing it in the lid.In spite of
that we really like using our se phones with this keyboard. When the
keyboard is open, it's pretty think but really sturdy, the thickness is like
the thickness of holding 2 pocket slates pus half the thickness of a 3rd
slate so in other words the thickness of the keyboard is just a little less
than the thickness of 3 slates held together. The keyboard is so sturdy,
either a thick book board or board slate kind of sturdy, as in even a thick
piece of wood. It's so strong for something this thin it won't budge around
as you're typing. No flimsiness here. If you have any other questions just
ask.

Re: Thermostat again

2018-08-13 Thread 'Dan' via VIPhone
Hello,
I have the talking thermostat from Talkingthermostats.com.
It's the VIP3000.
This is a universal thermostat. It is not a Wi-Fi thermostat.
It does have 5/2 programming. That means weekday and weekend programming.
It speaks in an extremely clear male voice.
The price was around $190 or so.
HTh.

That seems like quite a large price difference. Here in the US, the price
difference between the two devices is $300. I’m just not sure if I 14 sale

settle on 20, like the folks from Baum did. But that device was so darn

HI,

I haven't previously been in the market for a new thermostat, but found out

I'll be checking the Archive for comments, but I need to know quickly when

In case I don't get through the Archived material in time, can those in the

Black Web bluetooth keyboard

I've been impressed by this Black Web keyboard everyone has been discussing.

I have a couple questions. Will it work with my 8 Plus? Arlene, you
mentioned it has USB charging capability; how do I tell the level of charge
and when it needs charging as I am totally blind?

You're welcome Mary.

I, too, have the larger BI display in my case the 40, and the keyboard
on that unit is great.

I'm still within my 30 day return window with Humanware so may decide to
send it back myself.

The Focus 14 and even for that matter the Focus 40  are fantastic.

Very well made and good keyboard with crisp key travel which isn't   loud.

Here in Aussie land though it's $2300AUD a big difference from the
$1350AUD that Humanware charge.

Good luck and feel free to report back as to which way you go.

Best,

Subject: Apple Pay has over 252M users globally, more popular

Apple Pay has over 252M users globally, more popular internationally than US
By Chance Miller

Following a positive outlook on Apple's earnings call last week, Loup
Ventures is out today with an in-depth look at the state of Apple Pay.
Currently, Loup Ventures estimates that just 20 percent of global smartphone
users rely on their phone as a wallet, but it expects that number to rise
to
80 percent.
Gene Munster of Loup Ventures estimate that Apple Pay currently has over 252
million users, which comes out to 31 percent of the active iPhone install
base. While Apple itself doesn't break out Apple Pay users, Tim Cook touted
on the company's earnings call last week that there were over one billion
Apple Pay transactions during Q3 2018. Munster predicts 200 percent
transaction growth next year.
Further, Munster estimates that Apple Pay adoption is accelerating quicker
overseas than in the United States - with 85 percent of users being
international, compared to just 15 percent in the United States.
With the addition of new countries, it makes sense that international has
been the key driver to the Apple Pay story. There are currently 24 countries
where Apple Pay is accepted, soon be 25 with the addition of Germany later
this year. We now estimate total Apple Pay user base at about 253 million
(International at 215m, US at 38m).
However, Munster believes that Apple Pay is too small to move Apple's
overall Services business - accounting for just 1-2 percent of Services
revenue. Going forward, however, Munster writes that Apple has several
advantages over competing platforms when it comes to branding the iPhone as
a digital wallet:
Apple has several advantages to brand the iPhone as the premium digital
wallet given its ability to integrate payments into both mobile and desktop
operating systems, use its brand to win accepting retailers and supporting
banks, and reassure users that transactions are secure and private.
Separately, Apple Pay is the only digital wallet with all five payment
pillars: mobile, desktop, in-app, peer to peer, and point of sale.
Apple has recently been increasing its marketing focus on Apple Pay,
including the peer-to-peer payment aspect of Apple Pay Cash. This trend, as
Munster notes, will likely only continue over the coming months.

Re: Small camera

2018-08-13 Thread Judy Pryor
Looking at Amazon here in the UK the Tom Tom is very expensive about 340
pounds. The Go Pro is cheaper about 285 pounds for one model it has simple
voice commands. Amazon seem to be plugging a make called Akaso which is much
cheaper with a remote control on your wrist.
I just want something very simple to use and not too expensive. I will consult
my family when they return from Spain.

Kind regards

Audio Description On Dish

2018-08-13 Thread Scott Rumery

Hello,

I would like to hear from anyone who has Dish for their television
service in regards to being able to access audio description on those
programs that offer it.

We have been using Dish for almost a year now and for the most part we
are satisfied with it with one major exception. For some reason any
programs that are on TBS or TNT that have description we do not get the
description. There are 3 shows that my wife and I are most interested in
on these channel. On TBS The Big Bang Theory andSeinfeld(which I have
just learned is described), and on TNT Law and Order.

I keep trying to get the described versions on these shows but as of now
I have never been able to get the described versions of these shows.
What is strange is that on any other channel where there is a show with
audio description it works just fine.

I have talked several times to Dish about this but as of yet they have
not fixed this for us.

So my question to the group is: is there anyone on the list that has
Dish that is able to get audio description to work on either TBS or TNT?

Thank You,

Scott

double tap, lift finger, then scrub? Is it all one gesture? Double tap and

Re: Apple Pay has over 252M users globally, more popular internationally than US, 9 to 5 Mac

2018-08-13 Thread Kelly Pierce
What caused me to join the Apple Pay bandwagon was Apple Pay Cash.
Person to person payments are instant and seamless. Apple also has
better terms than competing services. Apple will not charge people if
their transaction fails to process, such as with a bank or system
error. Venmo and Facebook say in their terms of service that they will
charge customers fees if the transaction fails to process at no fault
of the customer.

RE: Small camera

2018-08-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Can you go into a bit more detail why the Tom Tom camera is in your opinion
better than the Go Pro? Go Pro of course is just a brand, they make quite a few
cameras.
One thing to remember is that while this could come in handy, it is an
investment of several hundred Dollars.

I would recommend one of the body warn action cams, such as the go pro, or
tom-tom bandit, which I personally think is better.
I am thinking of using one when riding, to catch out some of the dick head
drivers, and the issues we have with traveller stallions and such.

Re: Bi14 experiences?

2018-08-13 Thread Sadam Ahmed

I did recently get the BI14 after waiting almost 6 months after order
placement.

They sure did have lots of issues getting this one out the door.

The compactness is appreciated, but the keyboard of the device is very
mushy, and not at all as pleasant as say, the larger BI40 that I use.

It is however, much cheaper than the Focus 14 at least here in Australia.

Maybe it's my imagination but the connection between the display and my
phone isn't cutting out as much as it used to.

Overall not a bad display but I'd go for the Focus 14 if wanting to buy.
just a much nicer build quality than the HW offering.

All the best,

Sadam Ahmed

I have to admit, I have never thought of connecting a braille display to an

out how to make that as efficient as the old system was, which wasn’t great.
Obviously, I missing something. I would be curious to know how you are making
things efficient with your BI 14 on your Apple TV.

Hi Mary. I just received the BI14 this week. I have a first generation focus 40

Braille Sense as I like keeping : fidential information on it. It has some note
taking capability and works very well with the computer.

I wanted a small display that I could use with my iPhone and my two Apple
TVGGS). I could not see myself doing any extensive reading on the 14 cell

Hello Mary. What you have to do first is one if using Gmail for example go into

Two on your BIA 14 when you’re in your notes application make sure that you are
in the Gmail folder when you write the note.

Then if you want to force a sink press space with S. Otherwise your note should
link up the next time you turn the device on.

The manual did not point out that you are supposed to ensure that the notes are
turned on within your account.

I hope this helps.

I would recommend one of the body warn action cams, such as the go pro, or

I am thinking of using one when riding, to catch out some of the dick head

Re: apple id verification

2018-08-13 Thread Deidre Muccio
I get the same message. I think it has to do with iCloud which I have turned
off. And yet it's on for mail and other sorts of things. I can go to the App
Store and I'm logged in there so that's not the issue. It is annoying. I
noticed that a few things like mail were switched on still in the iCloud
setting and maybe all of those have to be turned off In order to make it stop
doing this. It also seem to have coincided with its loading on yet another
update which I have not installed.

Re: Learning Ally

2018-08-13 Thread Deidre Muccio
I agree that since they became Learning Ally accessibility became an issue.
Seems like the website is not stable if that's even conceivable. Sometime i hit
on a button such as close dictionary and it never works. I did get to the
opening page which allowed me to get to my profile which then allowed me to
read a book story by story. So in this case no the structure on these
collections of the best American short stories is never the issue
I had to close the app in order to get it to come up that first opening page
or I could then get two other books I might want to read. I find this app
completely non-intuitive. I don't know why they have to make it not work. Even
the old old Learning Ally beats the new Learning Ally. I've called them
numerous times over the years but things don't seem to get much better. It's a
shame because their book selection in certain areas offers things that barred
doesn't.

Re: Two Questions about E-Mail on the Phone

2018-08-13 Thread Michael Feir
You already got the right answer for your second question. Here's some help
with your first one about where archived messages are. Don't worry. You
haven't lost them. What happens is that they're taken out of the primary
inbox. You can stil find them by searching for something in their address
or subject using the search facilities. Also, if you go into "all mail"
from the navigation menu, you will be able to access all of the messages
including archived ones. The primary inbox focusses on messages you have
received and not dealt with yet. Don't forget to look in that spam folder
every so often. Gmail has one of the best spam filters I've ever come
acrosss but it occasionally gets one that isn't spam.

I've really come to prefer Gmail and the Gmail app over the regular mail
app included in iOS. It just takes a bit of getting used to as Gmail has
its own philosophy about how email should be handled and organised. Hope
that helps you manage things.

Carolyn, just keep in mind when the lid is down it will be a bit thicker,
and you don't have to remove the lid unless you want too. It's kind of nice
without the lid being on. We still have 2 of the black web keyboards, that
still have the lid on, and one of those is mine, and the third of this same
kind of keyboard that has the lid off. I think you'll like it, it's so
sturdy and confortable to type on. It's good either way, with the lid on or
off.

It sounds really good to me, and $20? I got out three slates and held them
together. I like the idea that the f and j are marked too. So, Black and
Webb, I'll remember.

Best regards,

Carolyn

If you have any other questions just
ask.

Hi, I just read this message and want to ask, are these keyboards easy
to find the keys? My wife has a keyboard and I noticed that it is quite
flat. I am used to my computer keyboard which the keys aresepareted enough
to find each other. Thanks Andy and Shubert

Arlene, thanks much. When we looked at WalMart out here, they didn't have
any in stock that we could find. We ended up ordering the Logitech K380
Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard from Amazon for $27 with Prime.

thank you so very much!!! I will look into the Black Webb keyboard
soon as I think I would do better typing notes, FB, and other things that
Voice over seems to give me a problem. Andy and Shubert

It does sound good. It may be a while before I get to Wal-Mart and can check
one out.
