2018-11-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Davy,

Which version of Messenger is this? I had an update today, version 190.1. It
says the following:
We have a handful of new features we are planning to introduce in the near
future such as colour gradients and a re-skinned interface. We will be rolling
this version out gradually over the next few weeks – stay tuned, we'll be back
with more soon!
This version includes several bug fixes and performance improvements.. Thanks
for using Messenger.

I have no problems with deleting messages/conversations in this version.
When I am on a conversation and I flick down I have the following rotor options:

Activate, default
Mute
Delete
More

If I open a conversation and want to delete a specific message in that
conversation I can double tap and hold, it makes a bit of a funny sound and the
focus usually goes to "Cancel", then if I flick left (cancel is the last item)
I get the following:

Thumbs Down
Thumbs Up
Angry Face
Crying Face
Surprised face with open mouth
Grinning face with tightly closed eyes
Face with heart shaped eyes
Forward button
Delete button
Copy button
Wave to

Interestingly enough I can't find all these options by exploring the screen,
when this menu is up I pretty much get "Cancel" wherever I touch the screen,
but I can then flick left and eventually get to Forward, Delete and Copy.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi folks

It is no longer possible to delete messages in messenger using the rotor tasks.
However, you can click on delete message but nothing happens. If you hold and
release after the 3 progress beeps you can access the menu for that person but
there seems to be no option to delete the conversation.

For the users of itunes 12.6.3 it makes no sense to roll back to a previous
version of the app because when reinstalling the app on your phone you are
prompted to update the app otherwise it won’t work anymore.
Please report this bug to facebook accessibility.

Hi List,

I've been using an app called Tell Me When to follow my favorite authors.
Historically, I've been able to double tap on the name of one of those tracked
authors and get a list of their books from the Apple iBooks store. Now, each
author I execute returns a blank screen. I'm wondering what others who use this
app are experiencing. I know Apple renamed its iBooks to just Books and perhaps
this is causing the problem but I thought I'd better ask the list to see if
others are experiencing the same thing I am.

Thanks in advance.

One reason why I have not yet shelled out the very high price for the Airpods.

RE: 10 ways the iPhone XR is worse than the iPhone XS [

2018-11-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Exactly, and the SE to the XR is another generation leap compared to the 7 to
the XR.
I am not totally saying you won't notice it, but in my experience I was never
blown away by how much faster a new phone was compared to my old one.
I think also that as devices get older that even with a new battery or when
plugged in their performance degrades over time. My Mom still has a second
generation iPad and that thing really is super slow and I think a lot more so
than when she first go it.

With the newer phones we’re probably dealing with the diminishing returns issue
on processor performance. Especially with VO users like ourselves who don’t’
use graphic intensive games or apps.
I do notice a difference in over all performance between my new Xr and my old
SE, but it’s not like it’s night and day either.

As usual, Sieghard, you display imminent sense. I'm probably happier than Apple
really wants me to be with my 7. It took until this generation to even reach
this point of mild interest. Processor speed is the only area where I'd really
have to disagree with you. I noticed some fairly large improvements going from
4 to 5S and from 5S to 7. Processor speed makes a noticeable difference when
you're listening to music, have email, word processing and social media all
going. They usually check for updates in the background. I found that I could
have more happpening without things locking up on me which used to be a far
more frequent occurance. I think part of that is VoiceOver placing demands on
the processor. I also suspect it might make a difference with navigational apps
but haven't made good use of those for a long enough period to judge.

Due to a couple of unfortunate business failures, we don't have some of the
more intensive audio games that used to exist. Papa Sangre and Audio Defence
really put iPHONEs through their paces. There are some over-priced arcade style
games around but nothing like what Something Else Ltd brought to us. Story and
statistic-driven games like Six Ages don't demand much from processors despite
their complexity.

You're absolutely right when it comes to being caught up in the upgrade frenzy.
There have been hinge points though. Going to the 64-bit 5S certainly made a
big difference for me. My 7 was certainly a noticeable improvement but more in
terms of stability and quicker app switching, openning and closing. A lot of
little things.

I still have my 6S Plus with 64Gb of storage and only using about half. If
money were no object I’d get an iPhone XS Max with 256Gb or 512Gb, I mean,
heck, money is no object, right?

“Things have reached the point where I'd actually be interested in the
improvements to the processor and camera” and “If the camera results in better
OCR and object recognition, that would also be very helpful.”
The difference in the camera between the iPhone 7 and XR or for that matter
even between the iPhone 6S and iPhone XS may be of importance when it comes to
doing fancy photography, but they won’t make a hoot of a difference when it
comes to OCR. At least that is my opinion, even the camera of the 6S is already
so good that for simple OCR it is just fine and in fact I sometimes wonder if
too much detail isn’t actually having a negative effect.
As for processor speed you may notice this in processor intensive games, but
for every-day tasks the faster processor makes a negligible difference. I have
often noticed that when I upgraded, e.g. when I upgraded from a 4S to a 5S or
the 5S to the 6S which always were two-generation jumps that for almost all of
the day to day stuff I do the increased processor speed was not all that
noticeable.

“I have 3d Touch disabled and never liked it so that's no great loss.”
Well, 3D Touch is personal preference, I don’t use it a lot but I do use it and
certainly wouldn’t disable it.

“The audio improvement would be appreciated since I sometimes use my iPHONE
without AirPods. However, I just can't imagine the speakers sounding good
enough to remove the need for external Bluetooth speakers for serious listening
to music or audio dramas.”
Agree here, if I really want to listen to high quality music I don’t even use

RE: possible control center bug in ios12.1?

2018-11-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Same here, all the items I have in Control Centre I can use, activate and they
do what they are supposed to do.
I have customized the bottom rows to contain the following:

Row 1: Home, Flashlight, Timer, Stopwatch
Row 2: Screen Recording, Notes, Voice Memos, Wallet
Row 3: Apple TV Remote

I can double tap on any of these items and the apps or function opens, in the
case of Timer the Clock app opens with focus on the Timer Tab, for Stopwatch
the Clock app opens with focus on the Stopwatch tab.
I can also flick down on any of these, e.g. Timer, to Open Controls and double
tap, this brings up a context menu so to speak where I can adjust the time
period and press start, this also works. Not sure why you are having issues
with this.

It is not only about my friend I experience the same, what you say is right.
The app clock is being opened but if one carries out actions out of the control

Folks around me report the following: you can nolonger set or change the timer

RE: How to roll back to iOS 12.01 ?

2018-11-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That is not entirely true, you would have to find out if Apple still signs
12.0.1 and, if so, find the correct IPSW file for your phone, this is the 2 or
more Gigabyte full installer and you can then use iTunes to restore it. It is
not a process anybody should attempt, but as I said, a lot depends on whether
apple still signs 12.0.1, if not then Michael is correct and you can't go back.

Anyhow, apart from you said about text replacements not working, what else
seems to be the problem?
I am part of the public beta and just received the first beta of iOS 12.1.1.

Regards,
Sieghard

Text Replacement — if you use a lot of text replacements, do not upgrade! I
have about 500 text replacements. Almost half of them are not working since I
upgraded to iOS 12Dr Vaid

Air pods and multi point?

2018-11-02 Thread Chuck Dean
Hello everyone,
I have no success using my air pods with my iPhone 8 and my Apple Watch series
4.
Sometimes it works perfectly. I touch the watch and the air pods connect to the
watch, or I touch the iPhone and it connects to the phone. This is about 10% of
the time.
Most of the time they connect to the iPhone, ok, but connection to the watch
is hit or miss.

Is anyone having success with multi point between an iPhone and and Apple Watch,
If so, how do you do it?

Thanks,

Though there is no other English US voice, you can change the language
and get different voices, such as Karen for the English Australian

big regressions in accessibility facebook messenger

2018-11-02 Thread Davy Cuppens

Regards
Davy

It depends if you back up your keychain to iCloud. If you do, it backs
up your wifi settings and passwords. If you are concerned about
network security, unchek the keychain backup in iCloud settings.

RE: 10 ways the iPhone XR is worse than the iPhone XS [

2018-11-02 Thread janet gross
HI Cristóbal and All,
Yes, I have to agree with you when you say: you do notice a difference in
overall performance between your new Xr and your old SE, but it’s not like it’s
night and day either. I’m coming from a phone 6 to a xr in which the phone 6
either over heated or caught fire because the total front screen was completely
coming off, and whenever I opened an app, aw man, my phone would get extremely
hot, to the point I wouldn’t even hold it in my hands. Matter of fact, I had
to keep putting my phone on a cool surface, and wait for several minutes for
the phone to cool down. Matter of fact, my phone carrier at the last minute
decided they didn’t want my old phone because it was so badly damaged, but they
still gave me a $250 credit. No one wants my old phone! LOL!
Now, don’t get me wrong, my new phone xr is a nice phone, but I just don’t see
a huge difference or not as of yet, but I’ve only had it since yesterday, so I
am still trying to get used to it though.

A lot of
little things.

iPhone battery life getting worse – a trend likely to continue, says report

2018-11-02 Thread Mary Otten
Interesting. The XR is the one exception to this trend.

iPhone battery life getting worse – a trend likely to continue, says report
9to5Mac / Ben Lovejoy

Tests carried out by the Washington Post, CNET, Consumer Reports and Tom’s
Guide suggest that iPhone battery-life is mostly getting worse with each
successive generation.

Experts believe that’s a trend likely to continue for some time yet …

It’s not a problem specific to iPhones, says the Washington Post, but something
seen with Android flagships too.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been performing the same battery test over and
over again on 13 phones. With a few notable exceptions, this year’s top models
underperformed last year’s. The new iPhone XS died 21 minutes earlier than last
year’s iPhone X. Google’s Pixel 3 lasted nearly an hour and a half less than
its Pixel 2.

There is one exception on the iPhone front: the iPhone XR, with its LCD screen,
offered the best battery-life of all. But the results otherwise show a gradual
decline.

The battery-life of the iPhone X was slightly worse than the iPhone 8. The
iPhone XS didn’t last as long as the previous year’s iPhone X. And the iPhone
XS Max – despite having the largest battery Apple has ever put into an iPhone –
didn’t last quite as long as the iPhone 8 Plus.

That’s in direct contradiction to Apple’s claim that the iPhone XS ‘lasts up to
30 minutes longer than iPhone X,’ but the problem there, says the piece, is
that there are no agreed standards.

The Post’s Geoffrey Fowler was so surprised by his results he asked other sites
to confirm.

I called up a squad of other tech journalists also obsessed with testing at
CNET, Tom’s Guide and Consumer Reports. “Our overall average battery life is
coming down,” says Mark Spoonauer, the editor in chief of Tom’s Guide, who also
found the iPhone XS battery died sooner than the iPhone X. Many of the phones
with the longest battery life, he adds, are a year old.

One industry expert says that’s not surprising. The iPhone XS does have a
marginally smaller capacity battery than the iPhone X, but that’s not the
problem.

[There’s] an open secret in the industry: the lithium-ion batteries in
smartphones are hitting an inflection point where they simply can’t keep up.

“Batteries improve at a very slow pace, about 5 percent per year,” says Nadim
Maluf, the CEO of a Silicon Valley firm called Qnovo that helps optimize
batteries. “But phone power consumption is growing up faster than 5 percent” […]

And the phone power situation is likely about to get worse. New ultrafast
wireless technology called 5G, coming to the U.S. neighborhoods soon, will make
even greater demands on our beleaguered batteries.

Apple puts a lot of work into power optimization, but it’s not quite keeping up
with the power demands of the performance increases.

What can you do to extend your battery-life, short of using your phone less?
The main tips are to reduce screen brightness and to use Wi-Fi over LTE where
possible.

In the tests, which made the phones surf the web constantly, the iPhone results
were:

iPhone XR: 12h 25m
iPhone 8 Plus: 10h 10m
iPhone XS Max: 10h 06m
iPhone 8: 9h 51m
iPhone X: 9h 30m
iPhone XS: 9h 09m
The iPhone XR also beat out all the Android flagships tested, with Samsung’s
Note 9 taking second place.

Until the oft-promised battery technology breakthrough delivers results, it
looks like Apple’s obsession with performance boosts means we can expect a
continued gradual decline in battery-life for some time yet.

RE: New Phone and WI-FI Question Please.

2018-11-02 Thread janet gross
HI Dave,
Wow, I guess I'm better than I thought! Smile! The rep who helped me from my
phone carrier also said when I go home, I would only have to enter my network
as well as my password, but this is fine with me. You get no argument from me,
the easier it is the more I like it! LOL!

Janet
Thank you.

Hi Everyone,
Because I now have my new phone, and I am going through it to check all the
settings. One question is I didn't have to set up WI-Fi by entering my WIFI
password or network key when I brought the phone home. Although, it is
saying 3 of 3 WI-FI bars is on in the status bar on my phone. Does this
sound right? I always thought I would have to enter my WI-Fi network key as
well as the password though.
My phone carrier and I transferred all the settings from my old phone to my

have to enter the network key as well as the password.
So can someone please tell me what I am misunderstanding here?

Thank you all in advance.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is not only about my friend I experience the same, what you say is right.
The app clock is being opened but if one carries out actions out of the control

As usual, Sieghard, you display imminent sense. I'm probably happier than
Apple really wants me to be with my 7. It took until this generation to
even reach this point of mild interest. Processor speed is the only area

improvements going from 4 to 5S and from 5S to 7. Processor speed makes a
noticeable difference when you're listening to music, have email, word
processing and social media all going. They usually check for updates in
the background. I found that I could have more happpening without things
locking up on me which used to be a far more frequent occurance. I think
part of that is VoiceOver placing demands on the processor. I also suspect
it might make a difference with navigational apps but haven't made good use
of those for a long enough period to judge.

Due to a couple of unfortunate business failures, we don't have some of the
more intensive audio games that used to exist. Papa Sangre and Audio
Defence really put iPHONEs through their paces. There are some over-priced
arcade style games around but nothing like what Something Else Ltd brought
to us. Story and statistic-driven games like Six Ages don't demand much
from processors despite their complexity.

You're absolutely right when it comes to being caught up in the upgrade
frenzy. There have been hinge points though. Going to the 64-bit 5S
certainly made a big difference for me. My 7 was certainly a noticeable
improvement but more in terms of stability and quicker app switching,
openning and closing. A lot of little things.

How to roll back to iOS 12.01 ?

2018-11-02 Thread Apple Gourmet-
I recently updated to iOS 12.1 and I am most certainly unhappy with it. Can I
roll back to iOS 12.01? Can someone please help me with details on how to do it?
Thank you!

Text Replacement — if you use a lot of text replacements, do not upgrade! I
have about 500 text replacements. Almost half of them are not working since I
upgraded to iOS 12Dr Vaid
