Weird issue when phone is locked

2018-12-31 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

Maybe this isn't so weird of an issue, but something that just happens
now. Especially with how the phone tends to work now.

But I have noticed that when my screen is locked, and I go to grab the
phone and accidentally touch the screen, the phone will start speaking.
It usually just reads the status information. This usually happens when
I go across the screen to the left, or up.

Does anyone know why this happens, or what I can do about it, if anything?

It is not set to wake, or anything like that.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Amazon Echo Definitely Better than Apple HomePod, in One Respect

2018-12-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The Echo and similar devices are always listening for their wake up
phrase, such as "Alexa" or "Hey Google". It's only after they hear this
wake up phrase that they start recording what you're saying and sending
it off to their servers to see if you're asking them a question.

The story of how I got interested in the Amazon Echo is kind of funny. I didn't
want any of those speakers either because I've heard that they are always
listening, which of course they are. My mom had gone for a visit to see my
cousin who had an Echo and was showing her how you can play music on it all
with voice commands. When my mom got back she decided to get one. She is not
tech minded at all and asked if I could help her learn to use it. I admited
that I knew nothing about them but said I would try. When she received it, she
brought it to my place and asked me to play with it for a few days and to bring
it over once I figured it out which was fine. She did not have an Amazon
account at this point but I did, so I tied the Echo to my account planning on
doing a hard reset on it and setting it up with a new account for my mom when
the time came. Then I started playing with it, and, well, I got hooked. Having
radio stations and just about any album or song at your command was awesome. I
called my mom and told her I wasn't sure I could give this up. So, what ended
up happening was, she gave me that for my birthday and she purchased another
one for herself which I helped her set up, she loves it. I then got a Google
Home as well which is also very nice. If you are concerned about the devices
listening when you don't want them to, just unplug them.

Yes, I am not surprised that the Google assistant tops the list. However, I

Google. So I don’t mess with it. But I understand the attraction.

I agree with you, Ed. I own a couple of echoes. Generally, I find that the
Alexa system is horrible with respect to giving the information I actually need
or could use, outside of the weather and a little bit of news briefing. and
most of the skills are junk games and other Time wasters. That said, I do
appreciate the echo for the easy access to SiriusXM and to its ability for
reading kindle or audible books while I exercise. I’m not into the automated
so-called smart home, so I have no comment on HomePod or echo in that regard.
But as a music listening sores, the HomePods kill the echoes. They should, they
are more expensive. I have a pair of HomePods that I got when the price came
down to $500 for the pair. They sound almost as good as my wonderful
floorstanding stereo speakers it cost me over twice what I paid for the
HomePods. I would never consider any pair of echoes as any sort of real hi-fi
system even for moderately good audio quality listening.

RE: Amazon Echo Definitely Better than Apple HomePod, in One Respect

2018-12-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Given the strength of Google when it comes to web searches it is hardly
surprising that their speakers are good at answering all sorts of questions. I
will never buy a Google Home speaker, but look forward to having this available
via Sonos once Google integration is finally added at some point during the
first half of this year (most likely).
Sonos plans to support all major voice assistants in time and I assume that
after Google is up and running Cortana might be next and maybe some years down
the road Apple will open up SIRI to them as well. It won't happen any time
soon, but I am almost certain that it will happen eventually.

This is one big difference between the Echo and Google Home. With the Echo, you
must be more exact with your request, where as the Google Home is a bit more
flexible. Also, when it comes to just asking for information, the Google Home
is much better at this.

No need to unplug them since at least all Echos have a button which mutes the

It is of course ultimately up to you to use the Outlook app, but I am curious
what particular reason you have to use the Outlook app over the native Mail app
which in my opinion is every bit as good and while maybe in some ways the
Outlook app has a feature or two that is better I also find for multiple
accounts that I prefer the Mail app. I tried the Outlook app some time back and
while I am sure it has received a number of updates I still much prefer the
native mail app.

Hello everyone,

I just got my new phone yesterday. I have an issue with the outlook app. I am
hoping someone might have some answers for me. When I open the Outlook app, I
am in the ad account area. I am asked for my email address. But every time I
enter it, the app then closes. Or at least, I am taken out of it. I can’t seem
to get past this.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on? I can send email from
my account, and boo my account, once I go into the Mail app on the phone. So I
don’t get this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

And there is probably little you can do since if he needs to reset his password
he would have to do it from his phone or, preferably, a computer. Depending on
what he has enabled with respect to two-factor authentication it changes, also
would depend if he has set up a rescue email address or phone number.

have him wait a while, then reboot the phone by at least powering it off and
back on.
Then try again. It should let him try 2 or 3 more times.
But, Apple makes it very clear from the beginning that passwords are required
to have at least one capital letter.
It is a tedious process to reset a password so hopefully the reboot will work.

I don' tthink the recipe part has ever been accessible. My
understanding is that you could use the buttons from the phone with a
little study. I don't htink they flick well from what I've heard. But
I would never expect th eprogramming to work based on previous

frustrating that people haven't been able to reliably describe what
does and does not work with this. I have the older model and don't
need the new one, but eventually I'm sure we all will need it.

I would be interested in receiving a description of the buttons on the pot.

or with the echo, you can press the mute button, and this turns off the
mike.

But it isn't interested, in anything we say, or sending off to the CIA, lol.

If people are worried over these kind of things, then they should stop using

The story of how I got interested in the Amazon Echo is kind of funny. I
didn't want any of those speakers either because I've heard that they are
always listening, which of course they are. My mom had gone for a visit to
see my cousin who had an Echo and was showing her how you can play music on
it all with voice commands. When my mom got back she decided to get one. She
is not tech minded at all and asked if I could help her learn to use it. I
admited that I knew nothing about them but said I would try. When she
received it, she brought it to my place and asked me to play with it for a
few days and to bring it over once I figured it out which was fine. She did
not have an Amazon account at this point but I did, so I tied the Echo to my
account planning on doing a hard reset on it and setting it up with a new
account for my mom when the time came. Then I started playing with it, and,
well, I got hooked. Having radio stations and just about any album or song
at your command was awesome. I called my mom and told her I wasn't sure I
could give this up. So, what ended up happening was, she gave me that for my
birthday and she purchased another one for herself which I helped her set
up, she loves it. I then got a Google Home as well which is also very nice.
If you are concerned about the devices listening when you don't want them
to, just unplug them.

Yes, I am not surprised that the Google assistant tops the list. However,
I don’t like their business model one little bit. I don’t want to be sold
by Google. So I don’t mess with it. But I understand the attraction.

I agree with you, Ed. I own a couple of echoes. Generally, I find that
the Alexa system is horrible with respect to giving the information I
actually need or could use, outside of the weather and a little bit of
news briefing. and most of the skills are junk games and other Time
wasters. That said, I do appreciate the echo for the easy access to
SiriusXM and to its ability for reading kindle or audible books while I
exercise. I’m not into the automated so-called smart home, so I have no
comment on HomePod or echo in that regard. But as a music listening
sores, the HomePods kill the echoes. They should, they are more
expensive. I have a pair of HomePods that I got when the price came down
to $500 for the pair. They sound almost as good as my wonderful
floorstanding stereo speakers it cost me over twice what I paid for the
HomePods. I would never consider any pair of echoes as any sort of real
hi-fi system even for moderately good audio quality listening.

This is one big difference between the Echo and Google Home. With the Echo, you
must be more exact with your request, where as the Google Home is a bit more
flexible. Also, when it comes to just asking for information, the Google Home
is much better at this.

RE: WIFI-Enabled Instant Pot App

2018-12-31 Thread Richard Petty
Has the developer broken the app recently? After reading messages on the list
in November, the app seemed to work--aside from difficulty with initial setup.
I bought one. It's sitting in its box in my garage; I was awaiting assistance
to set up the WiFi. Now, I will return it if the app isn't accessible. I will
appreciate any feedback.

Actually, since this is an iPhone app, it certainly appropriate to discuss this

RE: WIFI-Enabled Instant Pot App

2018-12-31 Thread Terrie Terlau
I also got an Instant Pot for Christmas. I could not find a way to set programs
with the app. However, I did use the buttons on the pot to set the program and
received announcements on the phone when various parts of the program were
finished (e.g., when the program was activated, when the pressure started to
build, when the program went to the warm setting after the cooking was
finished).
If anyone wants the description of buttons and their locations on the pot, let
me know and I will send.
If there is enough interest, I will share with the list.

Go through your list and see if any had their name changed to gw midi data.

If they have then foobar 2000 can fix that problem.

Subject: Unable to delete iphone custom ring tones with latest version ofitunes
JAWS2019

Hello,
I am using an iPhone with iOS 12.1.2 and iTunes 12 latest version on a
pc running Windows 10 with JAWS 2019. I have a few custom ring tones
that I placed on my phone through iTunes but I am noticing that when I
go to the tones section in iTunes with my phone connected, they do not
seem to appear. The tones do however still seem to be on my phone.
Has anyone seen this behavior? Thinking that there was a different
method of deleting tones now, I went into the folder that I pasted the
tones from and erased them this way but somehow they still continue to
play on the phone.
Thank you in advance for any responses.

Thank you. That should eliminate those intrusions. I'll just need to be
vigilent to check for them in the future.

You could take several different approaches.
You could try turning on Do Not Disturb while on the phone.
You could change your notification settings to no alerts, and even no sound.
You could turn off notifications completely.

WIFI-Enabled Instant Pot App

2018-12-31 Thread Sandy Finley

I received one for Christmas and have a lot of questions about the app. If
anyone who has one and has figured the app out, even a little bit, could
contact me off list, we can share information without cluttering the list.

The good news is I was able to connect the pot to our WIFI network very easily;
the problems are in pulling up recipes. Here are some of my questions.

1. The app for the Bluetooth enabled pot has a Dashboard that can be used to
configure the pot from the app. How does one control this pot from the app?

2. I see the buttons for categories of recipes but get inconsistent results
when I do a One-finger double tap. On some, such as Meats and Poultry, nothing
happens; I remain in the same screen I was in before double tapping. With
Desserts, I get a list of desserts, at least sometimes. If I have been in the
app for a while, tapping and backing out of screens, I have to close and reopen
the app to get the buttons to work.

3. Finally, I am having trouble finding an entire recipe. I find screens with
what are called “main ingredients” but cannot always find the complete list of
ingredients or the instructions. What am I doing wrong?

Cannot view text when on the lock screen

2018-12-31 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I have a problem that I didn’t have before on my other phone.
If my screen is locked, and I get a text, are used to be able to swipe up to
the Vue option, and read the text. However, now I can’t seem to do this.
Does anyone know why? And is there anything I can do about this?
Is there a setting I might need to change somewhere?

Thank you,

Terri

Outlook problem

2018-12-31 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I just got my new phone yesterday. I have an issue with the outlook app. I am
hoping someone might have some answers for me. When I open the Outlook app, I
am in the ad account area. I am asked for my email address. But every time I
enter it, the app then closes. Or at least, I am taken out of it. I can’t seem
to get past this.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on? I can send email from
my account, and boo my account, once I go into the Mail app on the phone. So I
don’t get this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri
