5 hidden iPhone features even power users probably don't know about, BGR

Remember when Android phones first started to get popular? People who chose
Android over iOS would constantly brag about how much more capable and
versatile their smartphones were compare to iPhones. And back in those days,
they were right. Apple's iPhone prioritized simplicity over versatility and
many features that had been available for years on other smartphone
platforms were omitted. Of course, plenty has changed since the early days.
The iOS platform has grown over the years into one of the most
feature-packed software platforms that has ever existed. In fact, there's so
much packed into modern versions of iOS that it's impossible to remember all
of the nifty features and functions that are available to users these days.

We regularly round up cool iOS features to share them with readers so that
they can get the most out of their iPhones and iPads. After all, there could
be great functionality hiding in there that will make your life easier, but
it's obviously useless if you don't even know it exists. This time around,
we've put together five wonderfully useful features that are buried so deep
in iOS, even power users probably don't know about them. We're not talking
about 3D Touching the keyboard to turn it into a trackpad here. No, we've
got some awesome features for you that are so well hidden, we guarantee even
the most hardcore Apple fans will learn something new before they leave.

Location-based DND
This first tip might be my favorite, and I have to be honest: I had no idea
this feature was available until I came across a post about it on Reddit.

Do Not Disturb is a wonderfully useful feature that silences any and all
unwanted notifications while you're sleeping at night. Sure it would be nice
if you could set different scheduled for weekdays and weekend days, but
that's neither here nor there. DND lets your phone continue to receive all
those emails, Facebook messages, and everything else that floods your phone,
but it remains silent so as not to disturb you.

There are a few nifty options to be found in the DND section of the iOS
Settings app, but there's one fantastic feature you'll only find if you look
elsewhere: location-based Do Not Disturb. Using this hidden feature, you can
silence notifications on your iPhone while in a certain location, and then
DND will automatically be disabled when you leave. How will your iPhone know
you've left? It uses the same GPS and cell-based positioning tech needed for
all of the iPhone's location-based features.

Next time you go to the movies, swipe down to open the Control Center on
your iPhone and then 3D Touch the DND icon that looks like a sliver of the
Moon (press firmly). You'll see the menu above pop up, and then you can just
tap on "Until I leave this location."

Rearrange apps more efficiently
Tap lightly and hold on any app icon, and your apps will begin to jiggle.
You can then drag them around as much as you want to rearrange them, your
hold one app above another to create a folder. Most iOS device users are
probably aware of this functionality, but you might not know that there are
a bunch of different things you can do to make your life easier while
rearranging apps.

As seen in the GIF above, you can grab multiple apps at once to move them as
a group to a new page, for example. Tap lightly and hold on one app, and
then continue to hold it while you tap with another finger on other apps.
You can also use another finger to swipe between home screen pages while
holding onto one or more apps.

Getting apps into folders can sometimes be a pain because the folder jumps
from side to side as you try to hover over it. Instead of doing it that way,
just tap any fold with another finger while you're holding onto one or more
apps. Presto, it's open!

Pump up the volume
This is another nifty feature I wasn't aware of until I found it on Reddit.

If you use your phone's stereo loudspeakers to listen to music and you find
that it doesn't quite get loud enough, there's a setting buried in your
iPhone that will crank the volume up to 11. Open the iOS Settings app and
scroll down to Music. Then tap on EQ, and select "Late Night."

App notifications in folders
Do you keep lots of your iPhone apps in folders? Do you get annoyed when
those apps get new notifications and you have to dig around through a folder
to figure out which apps have new notifications? Don't worry because there's
a much easier way. Simply 3D Touch (press firmly) on any folder that has a
new notification indicator and a menu will pop up listing all the apps
inside with unchecked notifications. Tap on any app in the list to launch it
without even opening the folder.

Do you like to fall asleep while listening to

Carrying pouches was two totally unrelated questions

2019-03-09 Thread Richard Turner
My wife used some sturdy material and sowed it on her sowing machine with a
lanyard long enough that I can wear it cross-wise.
She is now working on one out of clear vinyl so it could be used for Aira or Be
My Eyes, or FaceTime. The lanyard will have a cord stop so you can easily
adjust the length so you could wear it like a necklace with the camera pointing
out at about your collar bone.

You do not have to change the Siri Voice.

If you look at the Siri settings, there is one for Voice, and one for language.

It is the language that needs changing. It has no affect on the speech output.

Moving multiple apps is so much easier for VoiceOver users than what this
article describes for sighted users.
If you have not turned off Rotor Actions, you flick down with one finger to
begin editing.
Then, flick down until you hear "drag app," and double tap; then find and touch
the next app you want to move and flick down until you hear "add to drag
session." Double tap.
Repeat until you have all the apps in your drag session you want, then go to
where you want to drop them and flick down to the option you prefer.
If you want to make a folder with all of them and another app, just touch that
app first and select the option to create a folder with that app and double tap
and you now have a folder with all those apps in it.
I've done as many as 6 at once.
I do not think a blind person is going to be putting multiple fingers on
different apps at once.

2019-03-09 Thread Carolyn Arnold
Speaking of turning down the volume, I have broken the little tip of my volume
up. I got it turned down to far the other day, so used a rat tail comb, and
that worked to turn it up some. I have a golf tee, and I'm going to put it in
my purse, so I'll have it on hand in the future, if I need to turn up the
volume.

If you're too young to know what a rat tail comb is, it is a rather coarse, but
fine tooth short comb with sort of like a very skinny handle that comes to a
dull tapered point at the end.

5 hidden iPhone features even power users probably don't know about, BGR

Remember when Android phones first started to get popular? People who chose
Android over iOS would constantly brag about how much more capable and
versatile their smartphones were compare to iPhones. And back in those days,
they were right. Apple's iPhone prioritized simplicity over versatility and
many features that had been available for years on other smartphone platforms
were omitted. Of course, plenty has changed since the early days.
The iOS platform has grown over the years into one of the most feature-packed
software platforms that has ever existed. In fact, there's so much packed into
modern versions of iOS that it's impossible to remember all of the nifty
features and functions that are available to users these days.

We regularly round up cool iOS features to share them with readers so that they
can get the most out of their iPhones and iPads. After all, there could be
great functionality hiding in there that will make your life easier, but it's
obviously useless if you don't even know it exists. This time around, we've put
together five wonderfully useful features that are buried so deep in iOS, even
power users probably don't know about them. We're not talking about 3D Touching
the keyboard to turn it into a trackpad here. No, we've got some awesome
features for you that are so well hidden, we guarantee even the most hardcore
Apple fans will learn something new before they leave.

Location-based DND
This first tip might be my favorite, and I have to be honest: I had no idea
this feature was available until I came across a post about it on Reddit.

Do Not Disturb is a wonderfully useful feature that silences any and all
unwanted notifications while you're sleeping at night. Sure it would be nice if
you could set different scheduled for weekdays and weekend days, but that's
neither here nor there. DND lets your phone continue to receive all those
emails, Facebook messages, and everything else that floods your phone, but it
remains silent so as not to disturb you.

There are a few nifty options to be found in the DND section of the iOS
Settings app, but there's one fantastic feature you'll only find if you look
elsewhere: location-based Do Not Disturb. Using this hidden feature, you can
silence notifications on your iPhone while in a certain location, and then DND
will automatically be disabled when you leave. How will your iPhone know you've
left? It uses the same GPS and cell-based positioning tech needed for all of
the iPhone's location-based features.

Next time you go to the movies, swipe down to open the Control Center on your
iPhone and then 3D Touch the DND icon that looks like a sliver of the Moon
(press firmly). You'll see the menu above pop up, and then you can just tap on
"Until I leave this location."

Rearrange apps more efficiently
Tap lightly and hold on any app icon, and your apps will begin to jiggle.
You can then drag them around as much as you want to rearrange them, your hold
one app above another to create a folder. Most iOS device users are probably
aware of this functionality, but you might not know that there are a bunch of
different things you can do to make your life easier while rearranging apps.

As seen in the GIF above, you can grab multiple apps at once to move them as a
group to a new page, for example. Tap lightly and hold on one app, and then
continue to hold it while you tap with another finger on other apps.
You can also use another finger to swipe between home screen pages while
holding onto one or more apps.

Getting apps into folders can sometimes be a pain because the folder jumps from
side to side as you try to hover over it. Instead of doing it that way, just
tap any fold with another finger while you're holding onto one or more apps.
Presto, it's open!

Pump up the volume
This is another nifty feature I wasn't aware of until I found it on Reddit.

If you use your phone's stereo loudspeakers to listen to music and you find
that it doesn't quite get loud enough, there's a setting buried in your iPhone
that will crank the volume up to 11. Open the iOS

Hi Carolyn for what it is worth in England there is an app called evoke which
you can bluetooth your hearing aids with and voiceover seems to work ok
although a bit slow sometimes. if you use it out and about you sometimes have
to wait ages for it to come back after you have been inside a shop or a
building. there is also a piece of equipment that you can attach to your
television that streams the sound straight into your ears. I know that won't
bbe of much use to you but just thought I'd let you know about it.
sorry for boring you. Janet

Do any of you know if it is going to be possible to use Blue Tooth with Blue
Tooth capable hearing aids for my phone calls, and there not be a conflict with
VoiceOver? When we worked with it some yesterday at the audiologist's, there
seemed to be conflict. I think I have heard about people using it though. I

I definitely dictate all punctuations in my text messages. Right, that Siri
does not say them, but, as you say, you can tell by Siri's voice inflexions
that they are there.

Here is something I'd like to know. So, I send my granddaughter a text and at
the end say, Love, Grandma, smiley face with sunglasses. There is an emoji like
that. Would Siri put the emoji or say smiley face with sun glasses. She reads
my granddaughter's heart on hers.

When dictating a text message, I say the punctuation marks in the places where
I want them to appear: colin/comma/question mark/exclamation point/fullstop,
etc. aside: I had to write those in words because if I just put inn the p
mark, Jaws doesn't read them.
When Siri reads back the message before sending it, he doesn't read out the
punctuation marks, but you know by his voice that he has inserted them in the
correct places.

Hi. I have two questions that are totally unrelated. First, what do those
speaking British English call the punctuation mark period. I’m using the
Austrailian Siri voice in order to get rid of the voice mail transcription
stuff. When I use Siri to dictate a text she always uses the word “period” but
I’m not sure she puts the actual punctuation at the end of the sentence.

Next off the wall question. I generally don’t carry my phone in a pocket, but
am considering doing that more. I notice that when it’s in my pocket it gets
somewhat warm. Is this normal? Does this cause the battery to drain faster?
Just wondering. Thanks as always for all the helpful information received from

You do not have to change the Siri Voice.

If you look at the Siri settings, there is one for Voice, and one for language.

It is the language that needs changing. It has no affect on the speech output.

Hello list,

So recently, I opened up a Capital One 360 checking account. I already have a
couple of credit cards with them and have used the iPhone app with no VoiceOver
issues. Reviewing purchases, making payments, etc.

Even opening and setting up the checking account was super easy via the phone.

Anyway, After I got the account open, I poked around the app and for the life
of me, couldn’t find anywhere that had an option to locate an ATM nearby. I
live on the West Coast so the AllPoint ATM network was going to be my only
option for things like depositing cash or withdraws. I was able to do this
search via Safari, but thought it odd that such a feature was nowhere to be
found from within the app itself.

I did a chat with Capital One this morning and outlined and explained the
above. The rep said that there is indeed a locate an ATM/branch feature at the
bottom of the screen. For me, it’s only my accounts, followed by their
creditwise product, an option to set a budge for credit card spending, a faded
out button to try the budget thing and then the two tabs at the very bottom of
the screen (Home and Profile).

I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, turned off WIFI and tried to see if it
would show up while on data and no go. I even had my sighted wife look at it
and nope. It wasn’t some VoiceOver thing where VO wasn’t seeing it. She didn’t
see the ATM locator option either.

So on we went through all these steps and while she said she’d let the “tech
team” know, she also wanted me to try resetting location settings. Yeah. I
didn’t feel like doing that at that time.

I even later tried downloading the same app onto my iPhone SE that I use for
work and same deal, No ATM/branch locator anywhere.

So after my long soliloquy, may I ask, is anyone else using the Capital One
mobile app for checking and do they in fact have this ATM/branch locator option
available to them?

I find it odd that it’s not appearing on either my XR or SE. I’m running the
latest iOS and app update too.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Hi John,
Assuming you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can tell Siri to turn
voiceover on. You triple click the side button that is to say the power button
to turn it on if that has been set up, just like triple click home. As for
tutorials, I don’t know about that. But there’s probably something on Apple
viz. The replacement for the home button involves certain jesters either
starting at the bottom of the device or the top of the device. For instance,
you start with your finger at the very bottom of the device and move up. You
will feel a tap and also hear a sound. Keep moving up and you’ll get a second
one. Keep moving up and you’ll get a third one. Moving up from the bottom to
get the three taps opens the app switcher. Moving up from the bottom to get the
two taps will take you out of an app and back to your home screen.

5 hidden iPhone features even power users probably don't know about, BGR

2019-03-09 Thread M. Taylor

Do you like to fall asleep while listening to music, watching movies, or
streaming video from services like Netflix and YouTube? Well there's a
simple way to set a timer so that any and all media will stop playing after
any amount of time you choose.

RE: Question about using Blue Tooth in my hearing aids with an iPhone SE.

2019-03-09 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi,
I use headsets all the time with my hearing aids. I use the Logitech H800 as
they work with both Bluetooth and also connect to your computer with a mini
dongle. They go over the head and have nice foam pads on them. I put them a
little higher on my head as my hearing aids our on the back of my ear. I
believe the headset is around $60 to $70 on amazon. Also I forgot to mention
they go over the ear and not like the ones that your ear goes inside a cup.

Hi Carolyn:

What do you use now to listen to your Stream? You are not suppose to use
headphones while you have your aids in. At least, that is what I was told.

My Stream was the first generation, so it had a very tiny speaker and was
almost impossible to hear without headphones or ear buds. So, I was almost
forced to use the mobile app, but was very happy I did.

Hi Carolyn for what it is worth in England there is an app called evoke which
you can bluetooth your hearing aids with and voiceover seems to work ok
although a bit slow sometimes. if you use it out and about you sometimes have
to wait ages for it to come back after you have been inside a shop or a

bbe of much use to you but just thought I'd let you know about it.

speaking British English call the punctuation mark period.

Thanks as always for all the helpful information received from
this group.

God bless!

Re: two totally unrelated questions

2019-03-09 Thread Jewel
When dictating a text message, I say the punctuation marks in the places where
I want them to appear: colin/comma/question mark/exclamation point/fullstop,
etc. aside: I had to write those in words because if I just put inn the p
mark, Jaws doesn't read them.
When Siri reads back the message before sending it, he doesn't read out the
punctuation marks, but you know by his voice that he has inserted them in the
correct places.

RE: two totally unrelated questions

2019-03-09 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Thanks. I meant to say that I changed the language, not the voice. Anyway,
I’ll try saying “full stop” just to see what happens.

As for the phone feeling warm, the screen is locked when it’s in my pocket.
What material did your wife use to make the sling for your phone?

You do not have to change the Siri Voice.

If you look at the Siri settings, there is one for Voice, and one for language.

It is the language that needs changing. It has no affect on the speech output.

Re: two totally unrelated questions

2019-03-09 Thread Mary Otten
I wonder if changing the Siri language to Australia or United Kingdom English
would affect how Siri understands you, however. Would you have to try to speak
in the accent whose language you selected? I know it really messes up if you
have it set to Russian and speak English. Been there, done that, it’s not
pretty.

Turn VoiceOver on by pressing the on/off button (right side of phone)

Hi John,
Assuming you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can tell Siri to turn voiceover on.
You triple click the side button that is to say the power button to turn it on
if that has been set up, just like triple click home. As for tutorials, I don’t
know about that. But there’s probably something on Apple viz. The replacement
for the home button involves certain jesters either starting at the bottom of
the device or the top of the device. For instance, you start with your finger
at the very bottom of the device and move up. You will feel a tap and also hear
a sound. Keep moving up and you’ll get a second one. Keep moving up and you’ll
get a third one. Moving up from the bottom to get the three taps opens the app
switcher. Moving up from the bottom to get the two taps will take you out of an
app and back to your home screen.

two totally unrelated questions

2019-03-09 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Hi. I have two questions that are totally unrelated. First, what do those
speaking British English call the punctuation mark period. I’m using the
Austrailian Siri voice in order to get rid of the voice mail transcription
stuff. When I use Siri to dictate a text she always uses the word “period”
but I’m not sure she puts the actual punctuation at the end of the sentence.

Next off the wall question. I generally don’t carry my phone in a pocket,

Re: Free MLB subscription for T-Mobile customers

2019-03-09 Thread Dave Jones
Here is the plain and simple of it. You download the app from the App
Store. It sounds like you have already done this. If you have the T-Mobile
Tuesdays app, you will receive the offer on or around 26 March for the MLB
subscription. You will have to redeem the subscription through the T-Mobile
Tuesdays app. Then, you can set it up, and login to your premium account
using the MLB at bat app.

Find My Friends with IOS 12.1.4

2019-03-09 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hello to the list.
I had been curious to know if the App, sometimes called Find Friends, sometimes
called Find My Friends, works well with Voiceover.
I did not have to download the app, it appeared to be pre-installed on the
iPhone.
When I had established a contact to share their location, I looked around on
the app, found the contacts phone number, and Voiceover spoke, 1 mile away, or
2 miles away, and so on.
However it would be far more preferable to get a precise intersection, address,
or something more helpful than just how many miles away.
If anyone has worked with this app, and knows any secrets, I would sure
appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks a lot.

RE: Issue with the Capital One Mobile app

2019-03-09 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
Same with me. Creditwise and then the two tabs. I was able to get rid of that
credit card budgeting option so that no longer appears under the Creditwise
button, but now it just goes from that button to the two Home and Profile tabs.

I have two credit cards and this new checking account. The branch/ATM locator
wasn’t present when it was just the credit cards, but at that time, it wasn’t
something I even thought about since I didn’t need one.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

So weird. After the Creditwise button, it’s just the two tabs for me. Home and
Profile. I was able to get rid of that budgeting tool. I even reset location
and privacy settings as suggested by the Capital One rep and no dice. Capital
One doesn’t even show up as an app in my locations section of Privacy like my
other banks do where I can enable/disable location services.

I mean, it’s not the end of the world. I can look up ATMs via Google Maps and
whatnot, but still…

I don’t know about the other stuff. Honestly, other than this particular issue

pretty accessible for me. I have been able to do everything I wanted but for
this one thing.

Subject: Issue with the Capital One Mobile app

Thanks,

Cristóbal
