RE: inability to manage ringtones using iTunes

2019-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Robin,

I am not sure what is causing these problems for you, for me managing ringtones
in this current version of iTunes works as always and Jaws reads the list of
ringtones on the phone just fine. I can also delete ringtones simply by
pressing the delete key.
After I saw your message I decided its time to finally put some of my ringtones
back on my new iPhone 8 which I hadn’t done yet. I opened iTunes and was
presented with a message that there was an update to version 12.9.4, but I at
first declined the update to see how it worked in the previous version, I
forgot now which version that was.
In any case, I was able to copy ringtones to the clipboard, go into the iPhone
section, go to Tones in the sidebar treeview and tab a few times into the
treeview where any tones are listed. At first nothing showed because I had
never put any ringtones on this phone yet. After pressing Control + V I heard
the tritone iTunes makes when it’s done syncing or has completed another task
and Jaws read the tone I had just copied to the phone. I repeated this with a
bunch of other tones, some I copied individually and some I copied in groups of
4 or 5 at a time and it all worked fine and I could arrow down the treeview and
Jaws read everything. I copied also a tone I didn’t want and pressing delete
brought up a prompt asking me if I wanted to delete it.
I then updated iTunes to the version you have, 12.9.4, and I was still able to
browse through the treeview with Jaws reading the tones and their length, I
could press enter or space on any of them to play them and also add more and
delete them.

Sieghard

Subject: inability to manage ringtones using iTunes

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else had encountered this issue or could
duplicate it.
I’ve recently discovered that managing ringtones using iTunes on the windows
side is a broken mess. I’m using the latest version of iTunes version
12.9.4.102 under Windows 10. And no matter the screen reader in use JFW version
2019, NVDA 2019 or Narrator the view of tones will appear as though it’s empty
even if you have tones on your phone. If you copy something to it and the
screen readers feel like cooperating it might populate and then speak but
that’s iffy. But more importantly you can’t delete a tone from your device or
iTunes library. If you hit delete on it nothing happens. If you right click
and hit delete in the resulting menu nothing happens. So now you can maybe if
you’re lucky add a tone to your device but you simply cannot delete a tone. I
can’t verify if this issue is present when screen readers aren’t in the mix but
it’s definitely the case when they’re in use.
If anyone has encountered this and found a fix I’d love to hear. If it can be
duplicated and you’d like to join me in reporting it to Apple Accessibility
it’d be greatly appreciated as sometimes greater numbers help when advocating
or reporting accessibility issues.
Thanks in advance.
Robin

2019-03-27 Thread Richard Turner

normally, the accessibility shortcut is set to VoiceOver out of the box. So he
should try triple clicking the home button once he has it powered up.
If he isn't sure that it powered up, he should just plug it into the charger

Hello Ann,

I love, love, love the native iOS reminders app. In fact, I don't think I
could get through my week without it.

As for having the text of the reminder read out loud? I believe this has to do
with a VoiceOver setting.

As for me, I would never want VoiceOver to automatically read the text of a
reminder. Instead, I have my reminders set to display a persistent banner
across the screen which, forces me to interact with it.

Explore the Reminders notification settings and see what happens.

I have tried with Siri, without Siri. I have examined the settings for

Reminders and Calendar control.

Mark, Thank you for advising me to check settings for the Calendar app. I
did find something which allowed me to make a selection other than Yahoo
which is now allowing me to make appointments using Siri which did register.
I'm not ready to give up my Braille method just yet, but will transfer the
next few weeks of appointments onto the phone again to see if I can follow.
Some of these settings get changed at times, I think, when we update, and I
always lose important information. I know what I set this to now, which, I
think, is where it should be under my name and hope this works because the
way it was, It has been useless for months now. Thanks for the tip. Let's
hope I have it better set now.

2019-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, he would have to set up a contact and when entering the phone number put 1
or 2 commas behind it (each comma is equal to I think a 2 or 3 second delay,
then enter, for example, an account number including the pound/# symbol if that
needs to be pressed, another comma and then the PIN and again the number/pound
symbol. Of course this means should somebody get a hold of his iPhone they
would have access to his full account number and PIN, information which should
be kept secret.

Good point. Thanks.

If what I said was the cause then Resetting all Settings would have included a
reset of the network settings and this would have most likely disconnected any
potentially connected Bluetooth devices.

You could have just turned Bluetooth off and that may have fixed the issue.

RE: News Plus Service and News App as it has been

2019-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It also means it may never come to market. Apple just as Samsung files dozens
of patent applications and some of what they file is stuff they may look at and
work on but may later abandon again. Let's put it that way, if you have to
upgrade your iPhone this year or next year I would say don't hold your breath
regarding getting a foldable iPhone.

I just read an article about just that last night. Apple was just awarded
patents for a foldable device but the device would be iPad sized and not phone
sized. It looks as if they are looking to possibly reinvent the digital book as
it were. It kind of sounds like a newspaper like device that can be opened like
a book/newspaper. This doesn’t mean it will be coming to the market anytime
soon though.

I read it on Patently Apple.

Hi Mike,

The Qardio is a wireless cuff that workds great. When you unroll it to put
it on it turns on. Then you go to the Qardio app and press the start button
and it gives you your blood pressure. The app even saves your readings. The
app is totally accessible. You can get it on Amazon. They have great tech
support if you have any issues. Oh one more thing, when you roll up the cuff
it turns itself off. It comes in a nice box to store it.

The Qardio also has the normal cuff that goes around the upper arm and
closes with Velcro, a small pack on the outside has some batteries, I think
AAA, and the electronics which connect it to the app. You start the
measurement from the app, a small motor inflates the cuff and as is normal
with electronic blood pressure devices slowly releases the pressure. You can
get it directly from Qardio or on Amazon, maybe also at Best Buy and places
like that and probably also from an Apple Store.

RE: Reminders.

Reminders and Calendar are also two very different things.
The iOS Reminders app has nothing to do with using the Calendar, it simply

I have had absolutely no luck using reminders to keep track of what I have to
do when and every time we do an update, the calendar system loses my
appointment information. This has happened to me over and over and over again.
Not only that, now, it keeps asking me for a Yahoo ID, and I do nothing with
Yahoo. I have gone back to keeping appointment dates in Braille because trying
to keep things straight electronically has not proved to be reliable even when
I have typed the information in with a keyboard rather than dictating. I can’t
continue to have the added confusion in life, so devised a way of using sticky
notes and Braille in a folder where I can move things around as I need to. I
have tried using the electronic calendars for years, and it is just a total
nightmare. I am probably missing something, but this stuff shouldn’t be that
difficult.

Anyone having tricks to these features which really work reliable, I’d be
interested, but have burned too many times and am always having to call to
re-obtain the systems should have kept in the first place.

RE: News Plus Service and News App as it has been

2019-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That is not something we’ll see from Apple for at least another couple of
years. Everything I have read so far seems to indicate that while Samsung and
other companies are working on releasing a foldable phone there are still lots
of issues with that technology and Apple is not that given to rushing into some
new technology if they are not confident that it is going to be if not perfect
then at least very reliable and good.
If this proofs to be truly technology which can be made to work then maybe in
2021 or 2022 Apple will introduce a foldable phone and as with Touch Id and
Face Id I wouldn’t be surprised if it were something they developed themselves
and made it better than what is offered by others. I don’t want to claim Apple
is perfect in that regard and that they don’t or have made mistakes or released
products which maybe weren’t quite ready for prime time, but all in all they
are definitely a bit more conservative and less likely to release a foldable
phone just because others do.

Subject: News Plus Service and News App as it has been

I just called the Apple Disability Support number, 877.204.3930, as Richard
Turner suggested because reading news articles has been a difficulty for quite
some time now, as everyone has indicated since the IOS 12. I placed my comments
with the support person who answered and expressed a couple of other concerns I
am feeling about iPhone moving forward for us. You all may already have this
information, but I was told that going to >apple.com/feedback and submitting
comments or ideas we might have is helpful to the team looking into these
issues. He seemed to feel that many improvements and ideas had come from that
source, and it probably saves the tech support team from having to listen to
little old ladies and their gripes and concerns about the equipment and
software.

Just thought I would share that in case anyone does not have that information.
I told him that I was truly not sure what I was going to do moving forward. I
have the SE. He could not tell me for sure whether that would still be
supported in IOS 13 or not, telling me they never know these things either
until they happen. I also told him I would like to see an SE 2 with some
aspects of updated technology as I was really not interested much in carrying
something larger or more bulky. Who knows what they do with all of that, but I
did express my feelings. The representative was personable, professional and
receptive to hearing. It’s also a quiet environment to call which is a good
thing as well. I have terrible difficulties calling technical support which is
noisy in the background, trying to listen to the tech and my device, making the
entire experience beyond stressful.

Anyway, just sharing and hope it helps.

Thanks.

RE: iHealth Blood Pressure Monitor

2019-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, we have a Qardio and it seems to be the one which always gets mentioned by
others on the list. It works fine and seems to be accurate.

The Qardio also has the normal cuff that goes around the upper arm and closes
with Velcro, a small pack on the outside has some batteries, I think AAA, and
the electronics which connect it to the app. You start the measurement from the
app, a small motor inflates the cuff and as is normal with electronic blood
pressure devices slowly releases the pressure. You can get it directly from
Qardio or on Amazon, maybe also at Best Buy and places like that and probably
also from an Apple Store.

Hi Sieghard,

My wife watched a demonstration of the iHealth app on a local TV news stations
health segment and thought it was cool, the way it worked / its portability.
Would you please tell me about the Qardio monitor you're speaking about? Does
it have a arm cuff and work well with voiceover? Where do you get it? Thanks
much.

Did you already buy one or were you given one? If not why not stick with
Qardio which wirjs well and comes with a very accessible app.

Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience with the iHealth upper arm blood pressure
monitor? If so, would you please share your likes and dislikes, ease or lack
of ease of use opinions on how it works with the iPhone? Does it play well
with VoiceOver? All input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks mooy moocho.

Hello. I updated my wife’s ipod touch 6th generation to ios 12.2 and it wants
me to re-sign into her account. I can’t get the on-screen keyboard to present.
Any ideas?

Re: Is There a Way to Disable the iPad Home Swipe Gestures?

2019-03-27 Thread Dave
I wish there was. I Can’t understand, why apple, decided to include it the
swipe gestures, on Ipads, that still have a home button.

Dave.

if there is, I have not found it.
But, if you touch the screen first so VoiceOver speaks, you can avoid doing
that gesture.
You have to start your slide/swipe, off the part of the screen that responds
with VoiceOver.
It is a tricky gesture for sure.

  Hello Everyone,

Often, when I touch either the bottom or the top of my iPad, I hear the pop

Question, is there a way to disable this prompt? So that it will not
interfere with my normal navigation of the display screen?
