Re: Tunein radio

2019-06-22 Thread Donna
Hi,

Are you wanting to unsubscribe to TuneIn because you are only able to listen to
TuneIn when earphones are connected? This can be fixed. Unplug your earphones,
swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to get voiceover to
start reading, press the volume up button until you can hear voiceover. If you
are wanting to cancel your TuneIn subscription because the app didnt meet your
expectations; Open the app store, tap on the Today tab in the bottom left, tap
on my account at the top & you should find manage subscriptions here.

Apple at its recent WWDC opening keynote, announced the upcoming release of iOS
13, iPad OS, TVOS 13, Watch OS 6, and Mac OS Catalina. As expected, these are
major new software releases for all Apple platforms. However, this year
promises to be even more exciting than typical releases, as all platforms
include major new features and revisions.

Would you like a chance to help shape the final releases of this new software,
discovering bugs and reporting them to Apple before the official releases
occur? Are you a fairly competent user of one or more of the above Apple
platforms? Do you possess a positive attitude and a strong work ethic for
volunteer opportunities? If you answered yes, we would love for you to become a
beta tester!

Apple each summer makes available public betas of most Apple platforms, and
2019 promises to be no different. Beginning this July, Apple will release
public beta versions of iOS, iPad OS, TVOS, and Mac OS. Testers can install the
beta software and receive a sneak preview of all the new features, while
helping to perfect the final releases by discovering and reporting bugs and
other issues. This is truly an incredible opportunity and an awesome experience
- a chance to make a difference for millions of Apple users around the world.
As beta testers, Kliph and I run a support group for beta testers. Though not
at all affiliated with Apple, we do help to facilitate the process and provide
a forum for testers to discuss their findings, ask questions, and more. Since
every Apple platform contains massive overhauls this year, we believe it is
especially important to get as many beta testers as possible.

If you wish to become a part of this amazing experience, head on over to

including the nondisclosure agreement, please send a blank email to:

App for measuring distance calories burned, and time needed

2019-06-22 Thread Bobby Druesedow
Hello,

I am looking for an app that will help me with my exercise. I am walking 2 or 3
miles a day during a given time period. I want to measure miles walked, time
duration per mile and calories burned. I don't need anything particularly
complicated or in depth. I already have iTreadmill and run keeper. Are their
any other apps that would be helpful in doing this simply? By the way, i'm
using an iPhone 8. Thanks for the suggestions in advance.

RE: Food scale

2019-06-22 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
Yes. There's a compartment on the bottom of the scale that you access by
twisting off to plastic covering. This is the replacement battery I purchased
back in April. Less than $5
ANSMANN Lithium Coin/Button Cell - LiCC 3V CR2477
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GGIKN8O/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_.NTdDb6DK0FNF
I use this scale pretty much every day. Multiple times a day. From making
coffee in the morning to measuring out yogurt or quark or whatever or filling
up a bottle of water to make fizzy water in my soda stream.
My wife and I sell on eBay and Amazon and she'll sometimes ask me to double
check the weight on the smaller packages to make sure she's under a threshold
with my scale. Again, it can get to the To the tenth of the gram or fraction of
an ounce. I'm sure though that any other smart kitchen scale can do the same
thing.
I like this scale because the actual scale screen in the app is nice and clean
and uncluttered.
I had at the time also tried a scale called the perfect kitchen smart scale. I
didn't go with it because the scale itself felt pretty cheap and the screen in
the iOS app was rather busy.

Yeah I don't think I meant to post at all so I must have hit send when I wasn't
meaning to do that. Sorry for the clutter for sure.
I do have one question though about the Drop scale so I must have been thinking
about posting and decided not to then. I'm assuming about your comment on the
battery that it was user replaceable? I've never seen even the small lithium
batteries only last a year so I found that interesting. It does sound like a
very workable option though. I fundamentally like the My Weigh scale but I have
quite a time understanding it. I normally am pretty good with this stuff, but
the other day she said 9 ounces and I would swear she said one, but I know my
food weighed closer to 9. That's pretty bad though.

Any Good Journaling or Diary Apps, Anyone?

2019-06-22 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I downloaded Mac Journal for iPad a few weeks ago but, to be honest, I don't
really like it. For one thing, it's kind of wonky when it comes to having
the data stored in iCloud.

When I open the app on my iPhone, sometimes it sees the entries I've made on
iPad and sometimes, . Now I do not have Mac Journal for Mac OS and I don't
plan on spending anymore money on this particular product.

So, can anyone recommend another VoiceOver accessible diary/journaling app?
It would be great if the app could store data on iCloud.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Reading message from digest has locked up my computer three times?????

2019-06-22 Thread Dianne B Phelps
I have tried to read the viphone digest, three different digests, and when
I use JAWS FIND to go to the words, "Back to Top" to go to the next post, it
has locked up my computer. This has happened three different times with
three different digest documents. Things seem to be working with other
email. Please check to see that some sort of a bug or virus isn't being
transmitted somehow. I won't be reading until I hear that something has been
determined and fixed. This is the only email I am receiving which is giving
me this trouble.

Sorry for the bad news, but I am a bit frustrated. When speech quits and I
can't tell what my computer is doing and it won't move properly, something
is interfering. Please fix and let me know.

I hope it is clear that Winston's intent for the tones is to inform you of the
amount of text, so if the volume is at a reasonable level, and you either get
no tones, or very quiet; it could mean there is little or no text visible.
I am finding that his app doesn't need the phone quite so far above the page as
some.
But, if it is a full page of text, and you have a stand like the Fopydo which
is about 10.5 or 11 inches above the page, it will emit a steady tone for 2 or
3 seconds and take the picture. Assuming of course, auto capture is on.
Otherwise, if you double tap the capture image, it gets nearly 100 percent
accuracy.
Since his last version, I have only not heard a tone when the page had the
blank side up.
This is an iPhone SE, but that is also true with my work phone which is the 8
plus.

In Voice Dream Scanner, double tap on menu, then settings, and
look for the tones toggle and make sure it is on.

no, I was not aware of the voice dream reader list. I know I am on so many now,
but I still think this list will be helpful as well. Thanks for telling me.

Yeah I don't think I meant to post at all so I must have hit send when
I wasn't meaning to do that. Sorry for the clutter for sure.
I do have one question though about the Drop scale so I must have been
thinking about posting and decided not to then. I'm assuming about
your comment on the battery that it was user replaceable? I've never
seen even the small lithium batteries only last a year so I found that
interesting. It does sound like a very workable option though. I
fundamentally like the My Weigh scale but I have quite a time
understanding it. I normally am pretty good with this stuff, but the
other day she said 9 ounces and I would swear she said one, but I know
my food weighed closer to 9. That's pretty bad though.

Re: voice OCR update description from the app store

2019-06-22 Thread Holly
Good morning Richard:

Played with the new version of Voice OCR and all is working well, except for
the blue tooth hearing aid issue. When the app is open, sound comes from the
phone speaker, instead of the blue tooth hearing aids.

I don’t see this as a major problem, but will notify the developer, in any case.

I think the only reason I wasn’t hearing the ‘four corners visible’ is that I
was using a white card on a white table. When there is better contrast, it
works perfectly.

Reads amazingly well. Very happy with this new version.

In Voice Dream Scanner, double tap on menu, then settings, and look for
the tones toggle and make sure it is on.
You no longer need edge detection on since the tone is telling you how
 much text is in view.
So, the louder the tone the more information it sees.
Hold it steady when the tone is loudest and if you have auto capture on,

Re: voice OCR update description from the app store

2019-06-22 Thread Richard Turner

Hi Esther, and all,
I hope it is clear that Winston's intent for the tones is to inform you of the
amount of text, so if the volume is at a reasonable level, and you either get
no tones, or very quiet; it could mean there is little or no text visible.
This is an iPhone SE, but that is also true with my work phone which is the 8
plus.

In Voice Dream Scanner, double tap on menu, then settings, and look for the
tones toggle and make sure it is on.
You no longer need edge detection on since the tone is telling you how much
text is in view.
So, the louder the tone the more information it sees.
Hold it steady when the tone is loudest and if you have auto capture on, it
will take the picture automatically.

Indeed. This is the model I have. To be clear, my preference is to have a
simple talking scale that doesn’t need to be connected to any device to work,
but alas, I’m apparently kryptonite to My Weigh talking scales.

The Drop Kitchen scale measures to the tenth of the gram and from what I can
tell, is pretty accurate. There is a button the the scale itself where you can
zero out the weight and when in the scale screen, if you are on the actual
element that gives the weight, VO will speak it in real time as you add or
subtract whatever it is you’re measuring. Focus may end up at the top of the
screen however if you get an alert or if you take a heavier item like a bowl or
plate off the scale. It isn’t always, but it does happen every now and then. I
recently changed out the battery after a year of usage. It cost me less than
$5. The scale can weigh up to 6 KG. More than enough for kitchen purposes.

For powdery things like flour or whatever or if I know I’m going to get my
hands dirty and even though my phone’s an XR so in theory it should be able to
handle a little moisture or dust, I’ll still maybe slip the phone into a little
zip lock or sandwich bag to avoid getting it gunked up or dirty.

I hadn’t heard of the smart chef scale, but it also sounds like an interesting
option.

The Drop Kitchen scale also promotes itself as a cooking tool as I think you
can use it with a separate recipe function, but honestly, I’ve never even
bothered with that part of it since it was the scale aspect I was looking for.

RE: Calling All Willing Participants! Help Wanted!

2019-06-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Nice ad for your beta testers group, I sure hope you asked Mark before posting
this.
Anyways, you should have included more of a statement or warning for all who
might be tempted by installing the beta as soon as it comes out that under no
circumstances should one do this if you have just one iOS device and if you
rely on said device to perform at its best. Early beta releases including the
first couple of public betas can often be very buggy and may include bugs which
for many might be show stoppers if they knew about them. There are of course
people who should never install beta software because they lack the experience
to deal with unexpected issues and while you say one should be a “competent
user” of whichever beta program you want to participate in, it takes more than
competency at least in my opinion. I know people who are very competent but who
like things to work and who get very upset if they don’t work and somebody like
that should stay away from beta software and in many cases even from the very
first public release of the software in September.

Re: voice OCR update description from the app store

2019-06-22 Thread Richard Turner

i'm using an SE as well, and get the tones. They are not very loud, but they
are there.
I quickly touch the screen with two fingers to stop VO talking when it starts
reading.
Maybe you should write Winston about the tones.

Richard

In Voice Dream Scanner, double tap on menu, then settings, and look for the
tones toggle and make sure it is on.
You no longer need edge detection on since the tone is telling you how much
text is in view.
So, the louder the tone the more information it sees.
Hold it steady when the tone is loudest and if you have auto capture on, it
will take the picture automatically.

Richard

I am not aware of tones in this app.
Voice Dream Scanner uses tones, but Voice OCR uses the phrase, Four Corners
Detected.

To think I had a 3GS and loved it, took some getting used to, but loved it.

You did, of course Apple won't do that and it was meant as a joke.

I'm not sure how I feel about getting a discount from Apple just for using
Voiceover. Yes, it would be nice to knock a little off
the price. However, by using VoiceOver or other accessibility tools, we are
able to use the same devices the general public can use.
But, with the discount, it seems as though we are saying, "No, we're special,
we need this discount to set ourselves apart from the
rest." Doesn't that go against the grain of the empowerment and message of
equal access?
Perhaps I'm reading this wrong.
