RE: If you like Overcast it seems you now need iOS 13

2019-10-12 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
I’d venture to guess that the update is only shown/offered to those who are
upgraded to 13.x and can support it. That or it just hasn’t rolled out to
everyone yet. I too am still on iOS 12.4.1 and haven’t received any Overcast
update. Not worried about it though since it seems that all it is for is dark
mode stuff anyway.

RE: Los Angeles times app

2019-10-12 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
You just made me open up the ap on my iPhone XR. I'm a digital subscriber, but
if I read anything from the LA times, it's mainly via link I've come across
Twitter or from one of my RSS feeds and in Safari. I mainly use the app for
local alerts and such.
It had been a while since I used it so hadn't actually done so since their big
update from whenever they started rolling it out.
Anyway, true, the screen just shows those two items. I tried closing and
reopening etc. Turning VO off and randomly swiping and tapping, but no go.
I finally handed the phone to my sighted wife who said that it displayed a
series of those see what's new screens and to swipe next etc. She went through
the prompts and landed on the log in screen where I took the phone back and
proceeded with my log in with 1Password.
Now that I'm logged in, everything at first glance (no pun intended) seems
accessible enough. The tabs at the bottom, stories etc.
I guess it's just getting past that initial see what's new stuff (which is
nevertheless a fail on their part), and you should be good to go.

Subject: Los Angeles times app

I wonder if anybody is able to successfully get past the opening screen of the
LA Times app on the iPhone. I just downloaded it and opened it, and there are
only two things spoken, one is welcome to the times or something like that, and
the other says something about an all new news experience. Nothing works. I
double tap on both of those things. I can’t get past that screen. It’s hard for
me to believe that the leading newspaper in one of the largest metro areas in
the country is completely voiceover useless. I know you can get it on Apple
news. But what if I want to get the app and have and possibly have things
organized in a better manner than what you get when you just look at a random
feed? Has anyone had any success with this app?

A couple of the apps I have on my phone have recently had updates. And they
have talked about providing fixes for things on iOS 10 and 11. So, Christopher,
I think you’re out in left field here on this one.

Re: If you like Overcast it seems you now need iOS 13

2019-10-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, Apple pretty much forces everyone to upgrade to the latest version
of IOS, and imagine how much Apple and app developers save when they
don't have to test their apps on older versions of IOS or provide
support for older versions of IOS. All the app developers lose is those
customers running on devices that don't support the latest version of
IOS. You frequently here from developers how expensive and time
consuming it is to develop on Android when they have to worry about so
many devices and so many versions of Android.

I just thought I mention this, a recent update to Overcast, a popular
Podcast app, mentions iOS 13 is now required for this app. I find it
interesting how some apps drop support apparently for even iOS 12
already and I wonder why this is.

The same seems to be true for this ScripTalk app which was recently
mentioned.

Los Angeles times app

2019-10-12 Thread Mary Otten

If you are using an iPhone with a braille display, here's how you do it. Go
to eight-dot braille with the 2-3-6 chord. Then use dot 7 which is right
next to the dot 3 key. Use dot 7 and dog 4 together. Then, if you need to go
back to grade do the 2-3-6 chord again. I have to flip between the two when

On a side note, I love my ID made, and how it gives the blind great

doing your prescriptions works much better than say if barcodes were on the

Re: ScripTalk app

2019-10-12 Thread Jenny Bomareto
I put the app on my phone earlier this evening. It works fantastic.

On a side note, I love my ID made, and how it gives the blind great
independence that we really need. However there is one downside to the ID mate.
doing your prescriptions works much better than say if barcodes were on the
bottles without the tag on the bottom of the phone just automatically find the
barcodes without having to start all over like ID mait users have to do when
searching for products or items that people are looking for using the ID mait .

Hello Carolyn, et al:

You know, I've been puzzling over this ever since I updated my 8 Plus to the
latest version of iOS and purchasing an iPhone 11; both having never lost
VoiceOver as the result of any activity. With the rare exception of some
VoiceOver display bleed-through errors, described in previous posts, I never
use any of my Apple devices without VoiceOver and yet, try as I may, I cannot
reproduce the loss-of-VoiceOver glitch with or without earphones, of any type,
attached.

Did you know that not all iPhones are created equal? There are several
different models referred to by the same device name. Also, in the United
States at least, the type of carrier used can, in fact, have an impact on
device performance. For example, several years ago there was a VoiceOver
display driver bug that only affected certain iPhones sold by certain
manufacturers. Moreover, if memory serves, iPhones older than the 7 series
would have 1 of 2 different modems installed, based on certain factors. My
point, regardless of the name used, not all iPhones are identical, in terms of
hardware.

Again, at present, this is just a guess as Apple never admits to hardly
anything until it has been resolved but I suspect that those having this
problem, or the reverse, those like me, who are not having this problem, can
attribute it to the device type that is being used.

For example, and again, this is just a guess so don't take issue, I make it a
practice to pay full price for SIM-free models of any Apple device, only. The
SIM-free model is one that is generally sold outside of the US but can, upon
request, be purchased inside the US, as well.

I was told, by an Apple employee, that all iPhone 11 series phones are now
SIM-free unless the purchaser elects not to pay full price for the phone, up
front. I do not know how true this is as I am certain that when one purchases
a device directly from a carrier, the device is most certainly not SIM-free.

While I am certain that Apple will resolve this loss-of-VoiceOver issue, the
fact that it even exists suggests to me that they did not or could not
anticipate this problem on their in-house models, said models most likely being
the purist of the pure where software and hardware installs are concerned.

For as much as I complained about VO dropping out after phone/FaceTime calls,
I'm really glad I did the upgrade to the IOS13. I got a call that went to
voicemail this morning that was a SSA scam that said my number would be
suspended due to fraudulent activity, that I would be arrested, and to kindly
press 1 (I'm not kidding) for more information. I was able to use the voicemail
recording and the info VO provided to give an accurate account of the call to
the FTC when I filed my complaint with them after the call came in.

Yay, Apple.

Do the upgrade. Just have a pair of wired earbuds handy to get VO back if it
kicks out after a call. I hung up just a few minutes ago from a call (without
being plugged in), and lost speech but still had sound--I could hear the clicks
as I swiped right and left. I grabbed my wired earbuds, plugged in, and VO was
back.

If you like Overcast it seems you now need iOS 13

2019-10-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I just thought I mention this, a recent update to Overcast, a popular Podcast
app, mentions iOS 13 is now required for this app. I find it interesting how
some apps drop support apparently for even iOS 12 already and I wonder why this
is.
The same seems to be true for this ScripTalk app which was recently mentioned.

Sieghard

If you are using an iPhone with a braille display, here's how you do it. Go to
eight-dot braille with the 2-3-6 chord. Then use dot 7 which is right next to
the dot 3 key. Use dot 7 and dog 4 together. Then, if you need to go back to
grade do the 2-3-6 chord again. I have to flip between the two when I have to

ITunes Backups

2019-10-12 Thread Vicki W.
I have a somewhat detailed question on backing up and restoring a mini IPAD II
to a Mini IPad 5 and or an older IPhone which cannot be updated beyond IOS 12
to a newer phone with IOS 13.

First of all, what version of ITunes is best to use? I have both Windows 7 and
10 with JAWS 2019 or 2020 beta.

Next, what are the steps for making a backup copy of my mini IPad II or older
phone?

Third, how can I transfer this to the new Mini IPad 5 or newer phone?

The problem, I believe, is going to show up in the transfer. I will be trying
to put a different IOS version from one to the other. I'm not certain which
version will be on the new Mini IPad 5 or newer phone, but I currently have the
latest update of 12.4 on the Mini Ipad II and my older phone.

I know that people are having problems transferring the IOS versions with older
IPhones that cannot be updated to IOS 13 to newer phones with IOS 13. How is
this problem worked around when you can't update the older IPad or phone, but
yet cannot transfer unless you have a matching version or the phone you are
transferring from has a later IOS version.

Hope this all makes sense.

Thanks.

Vicki

Richard,

You've probably already read the CardHop Help page about Groups and Smart
Groups which is found here:

https://flexibits.com/cardhop-ios/help/groups-and-smart-groups

I'm pasting the text of that page following my signature. It describes how to
set up groups in CardHop but I'm not sure if they are available in the Mail app
when sending an email. I would hope they would be or their purpose seems rather
pointless.

Syncing smart groups from Cardhop for Mac

Cardhop for Mac allows you to create smart groups that auto-populate the group
based on specific parameters. At present, Cardhop of iOS does not allow you to
create new smart groups. However any existing smart groups you've created on
Cardhop for Mac will sync to Cardhop for iOS automatically, providing both
devices are signed into the same iCloud account.

I have to flip between the two when I have to
do web addresses. Hope this helpsffl

How do you use the tone to align the page? Also I have noticed autoshoot is
kind of hit and miss? I am confident it is the user--me--vs. the app.

RE: groups app - to send messages to multiple recipients

2019-10-12 Thread Alan Lemly

I would hope they would be or their purpose seems rather
pointless.

Alan Lemly

Groups and Smart Groups

Video: Managing Groups

Contacts can be grouped together for quick reference, and can be managed as
follows:

Organize contacts by group

Tap 'All Contacts' in the upper-left of the all contacts view to see which
groups belong to your accounts. You can tap the groups to show or hide them in
the all contacts view.

Tap the Add Group button to create a new group for that particular account. Tap
the Edit button in the upper-right to delete or rename your groups.

Assigning contacts to groups

Tap and hold on a contact name to add it to a group or move it from one group
to another.

Using pre-configured smart groups

Tap the Add Smart Group button to choose from a list of preconfigured smart
groups to automatically filter your contacts.

If it is direct touch typing, then they either have extraordinary spatial
awareness or they have enough vision to see the keys. Direct Touch Typing is
the same as typing without VoiceOver.

In either case, if Slide To Type is on, things probably behave differently, but
who knows.

Direct line typing is not a phrase I'm familiar with, but have they checked
under settings, general, keyboard and turned off Slide To Type?

It is on by default, and unless you know how to use it, typing gets very
strange.

RE: To Upgrade or not to Upgrade, that is the Question

2019-10-12 Thread Carolyn Arnold
We did that first. I mean, it was really a problem. If I thought getting
another model would solve it, at that point, I would have, but knew it was not
the fault of the SE. I am hopeful that the SE2 really will come out next march.
If it does, will it have the 11 camers? My husband would like that.

Best regards,

Carolyn

Your best option is a hard reset, in the case of the SE it is pretty simple,
push and hold both the home button and power button on the side for about 12
seconds, let go and wait for the phone to restart. On my iPhone 8 it fixes the
issue every time.

Yesterday, I lost speech, even Bluetooth did not get it for me - phone would
not ring, only vibrate. We did reboot, turned off then back on. Finally, I
called Apple Accessibility. We worked and worked again, finally turned off,
back on, got it. She asked if she could screen share, did, checked About for my
model information, said she would submit my second complaint with regard to
VoiceOver. I told her I was out of the house, had the problem for hours,
couldn't even get Siri. I wish I knew a work around, just to keep it from
happening again.

I do like Call Silencer, but would give it up to stabilize VoiceOver.

I grabbed my wired earbuds, plugged in, and VO was
back.

HTH,
Dani

I assume he means Direct Touch Typing, something I have never used and I
honestly don’t know anybody who does nor have I ever seen it discussed a lot on
this list.

Direct line typing is not a phrase I'm familiar with, but have they checked
under settings, general, keyboard and turned off Slide To Type?

It is on by default, and unless you know how to use it, typing gets very
strange.

Maybe they’re referring to the Direct Touch typing method? I don’t use that
one, thus can’t comment. I use the Touch to type method, and have turned off

No, I find iCloud to be utterly frustrating.

ABC Groups is fairly easy to use and while you have to do your Email from
within the app, it works quite well.

If it is direct touch typing, then they either have extraordinary spatial
awareness or they have enough vision to see the keys. Direct Touch Typing is
the same as typing without VoiceOver.

In either case, if Slide To Type is on, things probably behave differently, but
who knows.

2019-10-12 Thread Richard Turner
If it is direct touch typing, then they either have extraordinary spatial
awareness or they have enough vision to see the keys. Direct Touch Typing is
the same as typing without VoiceOver.
In either case, if Slide To Type is on, things probably behave differently, but
who knows.

Is anyone using this app and can say whether it is accessible? I have seen it
recommended as an easy way to create a group which can repeatedly be used to
send messages to an entire group of recipients.

RE: To Upgrade or not to Upgrade, that is the Question

2019-10-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Your best option is a hard reset, in the case of the SE it is pretty simple,
push and hold both the home button and power button on the side for about 12
seconds, let go and wait for the phone to restart. On my iPhone 8 it fixes the
issue every time.

I grabbed my wired earbuds, plugged in, and VO was
back.
