iPad mini 5: what does this mean

2020-01-05 Thread Fanus Buys
Hello list
I got an iPad mini 5 and after the setup all the apps from my iPhone show on
various pages but I am not sure what some explanations mean. For example,
the Audio Bible icon says "audio Bible waiting, double tap to open" but when
I double tap nothing happens. The audio memos icon says "audio memos loading
in iCloud, double tap to download" but when I double tap nothing happens.
Other apps start to download but no progress after 1 percent. On my pc with
the same wifi network I can download emails and other files. Can someone
please explain?
Regards
Fanus

I recently updated to iOS 13.3 on an 8 Plus, and I'm noticing a behavior I
can't fathom and don't like. Immediately upon iOS startup, the phone is
incredibly sluggish. I mean really low, like even slower than my 4s was! But
after about five minutes or so, that sluggishness goes away and the phone
operates at normal iOS 13.3 speed. Or should that be normal 8 Plus speed?
Either way, the sluggish operation happens each and every time I restart the
phone. Has anyone else experienced this and solved it? If so, how'd you do it?

Exactly, SE is both upper case and if written this way Jaws will pronounce it
correctly.

It’s the same with iOS or iPhone, Jaws will say it correctly if you write it
with a lower case I, then an upper case OS or Phone.

If you write it all lower case like ios or iphone or capitalize the first I
like Ios or Iphone not only will Jaws pronounce it incorrectly, if you have
spell check turned on in Outlook it will also flag it as misspelled and if you
do a spell check it will suggest the correct spelling.

Yes, call it an SE. In fact, you could set the Jaws dictionary to say it that

If you write SE in all capital letters, Jaws should say SE.

RE: iPhone SE.

2020-01-05 Thread Carolyn
I do, and it says SE, like say. So, someone told me no one would know what I'm
talking about, when I call it a SE, which I have for the almost two years that
I had it.

I have to say that while I liked it, and it probably was the best phone for me
to learn on, I am really happy with my 11. On the say, I am sure I have said on
this list, the button was off the Volume Up, so I'd have to find something to
make it turn up, if I needed that.

Re: Pros & cons of Apple maps vs Google maps

2020-01-05 Thread Richard Turner
Google maps is my go-to GPS app.
The interface for VoiceOver users is much better than Apple Maps, in my opinion.
You can do what amounts to a virtual walk-through of the route before you get
on the road.
You can have it show you the steps if you want, or you can just start the
navigation.
It just keeps getting better with each update.
If you want one that is more geared for the blind, you may want to take a look
at Nearby Explorer Online.
It is a bit funky to use, but has a lot of functions you can turn on or off,
but for simplicity and accuracy, I always go back to Google Maps.

online maps. What are the pros and cons between these two apps? Or,
do any of you have strong feelings about another GPS app?

The adapter I am using is called an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter. I
just looked on Amazon hoping to be able to give a link, but it is no longer
available for some reason. I have successfully used thumb drives up to 16
gigabytes.

RE: External drives and iPhones, was about Document 7

2020-01-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That’s a good idea, those who use drives of any sort successfully with an
iPhone should specify the exact make and model as well as exactly which adapter
they use.
As I said, on my iPhone 8 even my at least 3 or 4 year old Kingston
DataTraveller 2.0 drive with an 8Gb capacity is giving me the message that it
requires too much power.
Why a less than 32Gb drive should require less power than a 64Gb or 128Gb to me
makes no sense and “thumb drive” or “flashdrive” is semantics because both use
solid stage storage technology and the word “thumb drive” I think strictly
refers to what traditionally was a drive about the size of a thumb. Of course
nowadays you can get drives in all sorts of shapes from hearts to bullets and
some more traditional ones which are half the size of your pinky finger so
maybe we should call them “half pinky drives”.

I've started a new thread in hopes to get the thread accurately matching the
subject.
I would appreciate it if people would say exactly what kind of, and size of, a
drive they are talking about.
When I read "Thumb Drive" I'm thinking less than 32 GB.
When I read "Flash Drive" that could be several gigabytes.
I would be shocked if any iPhone could handle a multi-gigabyte drive.
But nothing will be cleared up unless folks are specific about the drives they
use successfully, or fail to be able to use.

OK, then maybe it’s different with the split cable you have, it certainly makes
no difference whether I provide power to the phone via the wireless charger and
logically it makes no sense that it would be different with your splitter, but
if it is then that’s good.

With the Apple USB camera kit I have, one end plugs into the lightning port on

the thumb drive into the USB port. You plug the phone charging chord into the

RE: iPhone SE.

2020-01-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Exactly, SE is both upper case and if written this way Jaws will pronounce it
correctly.
It’s the same with iOS or iPhone, Jaws will say it correctly if you write it
with a lower case I, then an upper case OS or Phone.
If you write it all lower case like ios or iphone or capitalize the first I
like Ios or Iphone not only will Jaws pronounce it incorrectly, if you have
spell check turned on in Outlook it will also flag it as misspelled and if you
do a spell check it will suggest the correct spelling.

Yes, call it an SE. In fact, you could set the Jaws dictionary to say it that
way if that would help.
If you write SE in all capital letters, Jaws should say SE.

2020-01-05 Thread Richard Turner
Yes, call it an SE. In fact, you could set the Jaws dictionary to say it that
way if that would help.
If you write SE in all capital letters, Jaws should say SE.

RE: Documents 7 review: Free iOS file manager puts Apple’s Files app to shame

2020-01-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
OK, then that is simply meant to allow for charging while also using this
Lightning to USB adapter, but I doubt it will provide any power to any
connected USB device. It really is no different than using a simple Lightning
to USB cable and putting the phone on a wireless charger which I tried and
which makes no difference. If it says the connected USB accessory requires too
much power then it says so regardless whether the phone is charging or not and
I assume that your Camera Kit with a Lightning charging port acts no
differently than a wireless charger, e.g. it charges the iPhone’s battery, but
if the iPhone specs don’t provide enough power to run a particular USB device
then that is simply a limitation of the iPhone and it won’t provide more power
simply because you have it plugged in and charging.

With the Apple USB camera kit I have, one end plugs into the lightning port on
your phone. The other end has both a USB port and a lightning port. You plug
the thumb drive into the USB port. You plug the phone charging chord into the
lightning port.

Yes, you can change the subject, but that does not change the thread. It's like
changing the Walmart sign on a Walmart into a Best Buy sign, but simply doing
this does not make a Walmart into a Best Buy.
A new thread should have been started for this, a new subject still groups any

Not sure how this ended up in a thread with subject "Seeing AI", but no, any
phone released this spring would not be 5G. Rumours are that this fall's new
iPhones will support it, but as Richard said, we won't know for sure. Anyways,
5G in the mainstream is still at least 2 years away for most of us. Especially
here in Canada we first have to see what the government decides with respect to
letting Huawei become part of the 5G infrastructure or not.

In fact, if an SE 2 phone is released in the next few months which now seems
quite likely, it is certainly going to still have a home button, but it will be
a virtual home button like on the iPhon e8 not a mechanical button like on the
6S or the current SE. This means there is a small indent in the screen which
feels like the home button, but pressing on it only generates a small amount of
haptic feedback which again feels a little like pressing an actual button, but
there is no mechanical component which is subject to wear and tear and of
course as it's just part of the screen there is no way for this to be a place
where any moisture could get in.

Today, I just got an iPhone 11. I think I am going to really like it. I can see

phone said I was right. He doesn't think one will ever be back, even if a SE

Here's my question. How to I use Seeing AI? I got him to download it for me.

Incidentally, for $19.99, I got a wireless charger and am so glad I did.

RE: How to change the order in which options appear while sharing something on your iPhone

2020-01-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Because that is a new feature, the most recently contacted people show up first
since very often it is likely somebody would want to share something with a
regular group of people.
I really like this, but the feature does not work properly since typically only
those contacts with whom you exchanged text messages are listed and the list
seems to be based on what you did in the Messages app rather than what you most
recently shared.
For example, I often share news articles with a friend in Germany by email or
WhatsApp. However, at best my friend's listing with the word "Mail" behind it
shows up right after I shared something and I share again, if I want to share
an article by email with him tomorrow he is no longer in the list and I don't
think I have ever seen a contact in the list with whom I shared via WhatsApp. I
wish Apple would fix this so that the list truly contained contacts and the
method I used to share stuff with.

Regards,
Sieghard

Dear all. Why is sharing something like a photo, iPhone presents option of apps
available where you can share The file. In the latest iOS, it starts with the
contacts frequently contacted. I’ve tried to change it through more option but
have not been able to do it. I will appreciate your help in this With gratitude

Hello,

I have what Amazon calls a “
[Apple MFI Certified] OMARS® Meteorite Lightning Flash Drive USB 3.0 32GB
Memory Expansion for Apple iPhone iPod iPad & Computer Mac Laptop PC

”

This device has a built in 32Gb SD card. It also has a rechargeable battery
that can be charged via a PC via the USB port on the unit.

The device has two ports one at either end. A standard USB for connecting to a
PC and at the other end a Lightning Connector.

When you first use the device you are required to download an app from the App
Store. The app calls itself I-Drive. Using this app you can access the device.

Unfortunately however it is invisible to Apple’s Files App.

No idea why.Sent from my iPhone

RE: Documents 7 review: Free iOS file manager puts Apple’s Files app to shame

2020-01-05 Thread Richard Turner
Russ,
Are you saying you have a USB powered hub that you plugged into the adapter
that was plugged into the iPhone?
That means you are adding multiple drives at once, which computers handle fine;
I am not sure iPhones or maybe even iPads can handle that.
Have you called Apple Accessibility who maybe could answer your question fairly
quickly? 877-204-3930

Note that with some drives, you will get a message that the accessory requires
too much power. In that case, you just need to do the following:
Unplug the lightning to USB adapter from the phone.
Plug the adapter into an electrical outlet.
Plug the adapter back into the phone.

Documents 7 brings the Plus button to iPhone, making it easier for users to

Although there was little to dislike about the look and feel of prior
releases, Documents 7 adds a fresh coat of paint inspired by the company’s
recent PDF Expert 7, a robust tool for document editing and annotation. The
result is a refined UI that makes viewing and organizing files a more organic

users can also now open more than one Documents window at a time, great for
side-by-side comparison or to drag and drop content between them.

Making its way from iPad to iPhone is the Plus button, a convenient one-tap
popup in the lower right corner which speeds up creation of new folders, text
and PDF files, scanning new documents, or importing existing files from iCloud

I think a lot of new people, and some old, have fallen into the trap of hitting

mixing those messages in with the original subject thread.

For those who use threading, it means either that they have to wade through a

I’m not going to call out anyone or any thread in particular, but please just

create a new message rather than just hitting reply and editing the subject.

External drives, was RE: Documents 7 review: Free iOS file manager puts Apple’s Files app to shame

2020-01-05 Thread Richard Turner
As I understand it, with an iPhone, any flash drive should work if it does not
require power.
The iPhone does not have enough power to run an external drive that requires
power.
So, if it is a multi-gigabyte flash drive that is normally used with a
computer, it probably won’t work with an iPhone, unless your adapter allows the
iPhone to be plugged into power while using that drive.

As for accessing the drive from Voice Dream Reader, I would using the File
Browser portion of the Add File dialog in Voice Dream.

I have not tried one of these adapters yet, but from all my reading and
conversations with folks, I think that is what you would do.
I use that to access my OneDrive when I want to add something to Voice Dream
Reader from there.

Likewise, I bought the Apple-Lightning-USB-Camera-Adapter and only one of the
several flash drives I have work with it. How do you find out what flash
drives work with it before you buy one?
Also I couldn’t find how to transfer a .zip file from the flash drive to voice
dream reader.

Hello, I purchased a lightning to USB adapter from Apple, I can connect a USB
thumb drive to that adapter and it shows up right in the files app on the
iPhone, and the files can be manipulated in many ways.
Thanks.

I don’t know if this app does, but the Files app in IOS 13 allows you to do so.

Documents 7 is a free iOS app for reading PDF, EPUB, Word, and Excel
documents, opening ZIP archives, viewing images, downloading and much more.

  on App Store

It took Apple nearly a decade to bring proper file management to the iPhone
and iPad with the arrival of the Files app in iOS 11. Over the same period of
time, an enterprising third-party developer based in Odessa, Ukraine was busy
refining its own file manager app, which outshines Apple’s in almost every
conceivable way.

Documents 7 is the latest incarnation of the versatile iOS utility that
started as clever web app ReaddleDocs, named for the up-and-coming startup who
created it. The mobile equivalent of macOS Finder, this jack-of-all-trades
allows iPhone and iPad owners to browse, view, and manage files with ease, all
from an intuitive user interface that puts Apple’s own Files to shame.

Documents 7 brings the Plus button to iPhone, making it easier for users to
create and import files from almost anywhere.

Although there was little to dislike about the look and feel of prior
releases, Documents 7 adds a fresh coat of paint inspired by the company’s
recent PDF Expert 7, a robust tool for document editing and annotation. The
result is a refined UI that makes viewing and organizing files a more organic
experience, with support for iOS 13’s new Dark Mode and floating keyboard. iPad
users can also now open more than one Documents window at a time, great for
side-by-side comparison or to drag and drop content between them.

Making its way from iPad to iPhone is the Plus button, a convenient one-tap
popup in the lower right corner which speeds up creation of new folders, text
and PDF files, scanning new documents, or importing existing files from iCloud
Drive, Photos, cloud storage providers, or network-attached sources. Naturally,
there’s also integration with the built-in Files app for seamlessly accessing
content stored there, as well as opening files saved in existing Locations
within Documents 7.

From the beginning, Documents 7 included a built-in web browser, which now
offers private browsing mode. On the iPhone, browser settings are conveniently
located from any open tab—no more hopping back to in-app settings just to clear
data or change the location of file downloads. There’s even a new option to
choose DuckDuckGo, Yandex, Ecosia, or Yahoo as the default search engine
instead of Google. (Yay, privacy!)

Whether it’s cloud storage, network-attached devices, or remote servers,
Documents 7 makes file management a snap.

While Documents has always been a very capable PDF reader, version 7.0
introduces an option to turn the app into a full-fledged editor as well. After
upgrading to an annual subscription ($50 per year), Documents 7 unlocks a full
complement of professional tools, allowing users to edit, convert, and reduce
the size of PDF files.

If you already own PDF Expert 6, those editing features are available free of
charge in Documents 7. Unfortunately, three advanced tools recently added to
PDF Expert 7 do not get shared, so the only way to customize the Favorites

Not sure how this ended up in a thread with subject "Seeing AI", but no, any
phone released this spring would not be 5G. Rumours are that this fall's new iPhones will
support it, but as Richard said, we won't know for sure. Anyways, 5G in the mainstream is
still at least 2 years away for most of us. Especially here in Canada we first have to
see what the government decides with respect to letting Huawei become part of the 5G
infrastructure or not.

I can see
why they eliminated the Home Button - more screen room. The guy that set up my
phone said I was right. He doesn't think one will ever be back, even if a SE
comes out this spring.

Here's my question. How to I use Seeing AI? I got him to download it for me.

Incidentally, for $19.99, I got a wireless charger and am so glad I did.
