RE: Apple's AirPods-AirPod PROs & AppleWatch

2020-01-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Here in Canada they cost $169.99 which is a lot less than the Airpods let alone
the Airpods Pro which in Canada are $319.
And the pass-through feature is one the original Airpods don’t have although
just like the Earpods they don’t seal off your ears, but compared to the
Airpods Pro these Jabra earbuds are almost half price.

Subject: Re: Apple's AirPods-AirPod PROs & AppleWatch

Hello,
I have never gotten consistent switching between my Apple Watch and my iPhone.
Once my first generation AirPods stopped taking a charge, I decided to try a
different brand of wireless earbuds. I find the Jabra Elite 65T wireless
earbuds, work perfectly to switch between the Apple Watch and the iPhone. They
switch flawlessly, have great bass, and much longer battery life.
They have a different shape entirely, and a little bit bigger, but are much
more comfortable for me because they have different size silicon gels which you
can custom fit to your ear.
You can use one earbud at a time, but this only allowed with the right ear,
because it is the one with the master controls.
Also, when both earbuds are inserted in the ears, they seal quite well, and cut
out all ambient sound. This is great for listening to music, but not good for
walking around. There is a way to get around this though, because the Jabra
Elite 65T wireless earbuds have a pass-through feature, you press the right
earbud button twice, and the microphone built into the earbud will pick up the
ambient sound and transmit it into the ear. I’ve never done any experimentation
with this, but I’m sure that it uses more battery.
I also find the microphones on these earbuds is phenomenal! Dictation, and
phone call reception is fantastic.
I really like these earbuds, although the charging case is not as clever as
Apple's. I liked my AirPods too, but my main regret is that they never really
switched between the Apple Watch and the iPhone consistently, a main
requirement for any ear bud for me personally,
Chuck

RE: Bluetooth keyboard

2020-01-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It does not have as distinct of a click, but as you said, it’s a good price
and with Amazon if you unpack carefully and don’t like it you can always send
it back. I think ultimately it’s one of those things where you have to try it
because no amount of description helps here completely. I personally would
probably use one of the wired DAS Keyboard 4 Perofessional if it weren’t for
the convenience of switching to my iPhone simply by pushing the button, sorry,
there are 2 buttons, one for USB and one for Bluetooth, not a slider as I first
said.
This keyboard also has 6 gaming keys vertically on the left, there is a
noticeable gap between Control, Shift, Caps Lock, Tab and ~, but it take a bit
of getting used to.
If you get help and use the Logitech G-Hub software you can assign functions to
these keys, e.g. you could assign Windows Key + M to the top one and pressing
this then is equivalent to Windows Key + M which means you minimize to the
desktop, you can also do Alt + F4 to exit applications or even more complicated
ones, I have one programmed to do Windows Key + Alt + Number Row 5. I have
Excel in the taskbar in position 5, Windows Key + 5 would always open Excel or
take me there if it is open, Windows Key + Alt + 5 is the command to bring up
the jumplist for Excel, I can then arrow down through a list of my recently
used workbooks and I use this feature a lot.
You could of course also program them so they do nothing so if you accidently
touch one nothing at all happens.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Sieghard,

I'm interested in the Logitech G613 Lightspeed Wireless mechanical gaming
keyboard and Amazon is selling it currently for USD $69.99 which seems a good
price. I'll confess that I'm a big fan of old-school keyboards which have
distinctive mechanical click feedback when pressing the keys and I'm still
using an old IBM PC AT keyboard that I snagged from the trash where I used to
work. This keyboard is a tank and was obviously over-spec'ed but I offer this
up so you'll know the type of keyboard I'm used to using.

I know you commented on the switches of this Logitech not being as nice as the
other expensive keyboard you mentioned but I'm curious as to your opinion of
its mechanical click feedback. I welcome any additional comments you could
share about it before I order one.

Thanks in advance.

If you want a big full-size keyboard for both computer and iPhone I highly
recommend the Logitech G613 Lightspeed Wireless mechanical gaming keyboard.
It has no backlighting, it uses a USB dongle for connectivity to the PC which
has a 1 millisecond latency and you can pair it to your phone via Bluetooth
which is also super responsive. Switching is done via a slider switch and it’s
virtually instant.
I use this keyboard as my main office keyboard, it is big and heavy and not
something you would want to travel with and my only complaint is that it uses
these Japanese switches called Roma-G, I wish it used Cherry MX Blue switches
which I have on my wired keyboards from the company “Das Keyboard”, I have the
model called Professional 4 and they are amazing, but also expensive.

Seeing as I've spent a small fortune in search of a satisfactory keyboard, I
thought I ought to pipe up here. I have a smaller keyboard from Microsoft
called the Microsoft Universal Mobile keyboard. It's compact and fairly rugged
with a plastic rubber coated lid which doubles as a stand. You need to type in
a code when pairing but once that's done, there's realy no lag. I don't know if
it's still available for sale so you might have to chase that one with Ebay or
something.

The keyboard I'm typing on now is cheeper because it's a 60% mechanical
keyboard from Keymove. They've made quite a splash in mechanical keyboard
circles recently. I got mine for $50 Canadian on Amazon. You can choose the
switch type you want. I like red linear switches. Other types have extra
audible clicks and add more feel to typing. It only has 61 keys and you don't
get multimedia controls. You do get an actual physical on/off switch on the
bottom. The key for slash and question mark is tucked in the corner formed by
the bottom and right arrows which takes time to get used to. There's no way
that I've discovered to easly turn off the rgb

Here are two tips that will make using WhatsApp nicer for you if you're a
VoiceOver screenreader user (as opposed to a VoiceOver magnification user).

1. On the Settings tab, go to Notifications, and turn off in-app notifications.
This will stop your phone from buzzing, beeping, and speaking while you're
using the application.

2. In iOS Settings, go to Accessibility, VoiceOver, then turn off the item that
automatically describes images. This will stop WhatsApp saying something every
time a new voice message plays.

Re: is apple working to fix the remaining bugs in iOS 13?

2020-01-24 Thread Holly

Hi Keith:

I am hoping that there will be another update soon. I have emailed Apple
Accessibility about the bug where voice over talks at the same time as Siri.
Very annoying and you cannot hear what either is saying.

Fingers crossed that it will be fixed soon. Haven't heard anything about
another update coming soon though. Maybe someone else can shed more light
on the issues.

is apple working to fix the remaining bugs in iOS 13?

2020-01-24 Thread 'Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.' via VIPhone
hi,
Does anybody know if Apple is continuing to work on removing the remaining bugs
in iOS 13? It’s been more than four months, and it seems as if there has not
been a meaningful update in at least a month.
I’m just curious if we can expect some further improvements, or if we will just
have to wait for iOS 14.

Thanks in advance, Keith

Hi everyone.
I'm not sure if my previous message went through so I am resending it just to

If it did actually go through, sorry for the repeat.
My previous message said that I we like to transfer pictures and music on to my

Do you know of any accessible ways to do this?

Re: Apple's AirPods-AirPod PROs & AppleWatch

2020-01-24 Thread 'Chuck Dean' via VIPhone

Hello,
I have never gotten consistent switching between my Apple Watch and my
iPhone. Once my first generation AirPods stopped taking a charge, I decided
to try a different brand of wireless earbuds. I find the Jabra Elite 65T
wireless earbuds, work perfectly to switch between the Apple Watch and the
iPhone. They switch flawlessly, have great bass, and much longer battery
life.
They have a different shape entirely, and a little bit bigger, but are much
more comfortable for me because they have different size silicon gels which
you can custom fit to your ear.
You can use one earbud at a time, but this only allowed with the right ear,
because it is the one with the master controls.
Also, when both earbuds are inserted in the ears, they seal quite well, and
cut out all ambient sound. This is great for listening to music, but not
good for walking around. There is a way to get around this though, because
the Jabra Elite 65T wireless earbuds have a pass-through feature, you press
the right earbud button twice, and the microphone built into the earbud
will pick up the ambient sound and transmit it into the ear. I’ve never
done any experimentation with this, but I’m sure that it uses more battery.
I also find the microphones on these earbuds is phenomenal! Dictation, and
phone call reception is fantastic.
I really like these earbuds, although the charging case is not as clever as
Apple's. I liked my AirPods too, but my main regret is that they never
really switched between the Apple Watch and the iPhone consistently, a main
requirement for any ear bud for me personally,
Chuck

RE: Bluetooth keyboard

2020-01-24 Thread Alan Lemly

There's no way
that I've discovered to easly turn off the rgb lighting. You don't have to
enter a number code when you pair it. The advantages are that it uses
Bluetooth4 and reports the status of your battery to the battery widget in the
Today view of your iOS device. Nice to be able to check the battery level.
There's absolutely zero lag to contend with and the board doesn't feel cramped.
It is somewhat noisy to type on so I only use it at home.

I've just backed a Keychron K6 mechanical keyboard on Kickstarter. It has
physical switches to change between wired, Bluetooth and off as well as one to
switch between devices. It uses Bluetooth 3 but given the stellar reviews of
their prior keyboards, I don't expect much lag. I went with red optical
switches which should help deal with any lag if I'm wrong. This keyboard will
also give me multimedia functions despite being a 65% keyboard. I'll also have
home and end keys.

Another keyboard I've tried was from Anker. It's quiet and compact. It also has
multimedia keys. Doesn't report its battery level and unfortunately suffers
from a smigion of lag. Just enough to be quite annoying at times. Otherwise,
it's a really nice design for a travelling keyboard.

Earlier, I backed a keyboard from Hexgears called the X1. Again, wonderful
build quality and a pleasure to type on but absolutely horrid Bluetooth
connectivity. I use it on my computer now but that one has to pretty much go in
the loses column.

It's very hard to get something which checks all the boxes. I have fairly high
hopes for the Keychron K6 but as you can see, I've been wrong before. I'll have
to wait quite a while before I think of taking another crack at that illusive
perfect Bluetooth keyboard. It seems to be my holy grail. I suppose, if it
injures my fingers to type on one, that could well change to being my Moby
Dick. I can

Hello all
A friend has been pesterung ne to use What's App rather than text messaging.
He wants to hear my voice not read the gibberish I sometimes send him when the
dictation is shoddy and I haven't taken the time to correct it.
I first did a search for What's App and saw a few listings. Should I
assume that the App I want is called What's App Messenger?
When I hit on the "redownload" button, it said I was in the UK store
and it was not available for download to my phone and I needed to get it from
the U.S. store.
How do I get back to that? I looked something up the other day that was
only available in the UK which must be why I am stuck there. I only see an ok
button nothing more.
I had What's App on my phone ages ago but for whatever reason did not
stick with it.

RE: What's App

2020-01-24 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Thanks Steve. I'm only using What's App in the Chat mode. When sending voice
messages I don't hear anything except at the start of recording when you can
hear voice over say some things. I will turn off in app and see if that goes
away. I'm not hearing anything else, just the ping when I start recording and
the ping when I lift my finger. It's powerful to hear the person's voice live
and has a whole other feel to it than when on a live phone call. It accentuates
the person like a recording you might want to preserve. I don't save things on
my phone though, so most exchanges get deleted nearly immediately.

Here are two tips that will make using WhatsApp nicer for you if you're
a VoiceOver screenreader user (as opposed to a VoiceOver magnification
user).

1. On the Settings tab, go to Notifications, and turn off in-app
notifications. This will stop your phone from buzzing, beeping, and
speaking while you're using the application.

2. In iOS Settings, go to Accessibility, VoiceOver, then turn off the
item that automatically describes images. This will stop WhatsApp saying
something every time a new voice message plays.

RE: Sharing A Book

2020-01-24 Thread Jim Fettgather
This may not be good news, as most books from the iBooks store are copy
protected with DRM when you purchase them, making it not possible to share them.
I don't think there is a way to do this, even though the book is offered for
free right now.
Thanks.

Subject: Sharing A Book

Hi,
Some years ago I decided to learn about Macs, so I went to the iBooks store and
bought Tim Snipfen’s book entitled Mastering The Macintosh With VoiceOver.
The book is still on my iPhone and I refer to it from time to time. Anyway, I
just started working with a new student and told her about the book. We went
looking for it and it doesn’t seem to be available anymore. While doing a
Google search for it, I found an article dated some time in 2016 which said
that the book was being offered for free in the iBooks store. The article had a
link to the book, but the link is of no use.
Since the book is “out of print” and was at one time being offered for free,
would it be legal to give a copy of the book to my student or anyone else who
might be interested? If so, how can I do that? I tried saving it to Voice Dream
Reader and it didn’t show up in Voice Dream Reader’s library. I went into the
Books app’s library and attempted to share it with my student via AirDrop. No
go.
Btw, neither Bookshare nor Bard have it. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Tom

Re: What's App

2020-01-24 Thread Steve Matzura
Here are two tips that will make using WhatsApp nicer for you if you're
a VoiceOver screenreader user (as opposed to a VoiceOver magnification
user).

1. On the Settings tab, go to Notifications, and turn off in-app
notifications. This will stop your phone from buzzing, beeping, and
speaking while you're using the application.

2. In iOS Settings, go to Accessibility, VoiceOver, then turn off the
item that automatically describes images. This will stop WhatsApp saying
something every time a new voice message plays.

iOS certification?

2020-01-24 Thread Adam Morris

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any certificates from Apple or elsewhere that are
accessible for blind people to be certified in iOS?

I heard of something Apple offer but from my understanding you have to
demonstrate physical repairs to an iPhone.

Thanks in advance.
