RE: Any thoughts, on the latest iOS update 13.5.1?

2020-06-04 Thread Richard Turner
Given Apple’s history, after the WWDC, they will maybe begin the beta cycle for
the next iOS version for developers, and then sometime in July, often later
July, the public beta cycle begins and the final release will be in the fall,
September or October, or given these days; who knows.
It certainly won’t be happening in a few weeks.

if the iOS security update fixed it, then something about YouTube was causing
iOS to think it was a security threat, which it may have been, grin.

13.5.1 was just a security update.
I suspect that in one of YouTube's many updates they broke that feature and

25 Easy Ways to Maximize iPhone Battery Life 3 MARCH 2020 AT 3:17 PM AppleVis:
All New Content / DRene Every time a new iOS version release is around the
corner, Apple announces substantial improvements in terms of energy efficiency.
The weird thing is that users don’t always notice these enhancements. As a
matter of fact, blaming it wholly on the manufacturer can be a misconception.
It’s often up to the users of mobile devices to ensure proper battery life.
Most people don’t bother peeking in the Settings menu to customize their
smartphones and tablets, which typically takes mere seconds. In the aftermath
of this negligence, lots of users fail to make the most of their gadgets and
may have to charge the battery several times a day. This article is going to
shed light on the common tips and tricks to make your iPhone battery last
longer. Low Power Mode The name of this feature speaks for itself. It is the
easiest and most effective way to extend the battery life of your iPhone.
Enabling the Low Power Mode pauses quite a few resource-heavy services,
including automatic downloads, background app refresh, email fetch, a number of
visual effects, and iCloud Photos. It also sets the Auto-Lock time to 30
seconds. To turn on this mode, go to Settings > Battery and tap the
appropriate toggle there. When it’s activated, the battery icon turns yellow.
The feature is automatically disabled once you have charged your device to 80%
or higher. Location Services It’s common knowledge that some apps request
users’ geolocation data to work properly. These include Maps, Reminders, and
Wallet, to name a few. This tracking puts an extra burden on your battery and
you may not necessarily need it to be enabled at all times. Therefore, it could
be a good idea to examine which applications can access the details of your
whereabouts and turn it off for some of them. In order to do it, go to
Settings > Privacy > Location Services and disable the feature for apps you
aren’t willing to share your location with, especially third-party ones that
shouldn’t have this access in the first place. Family Sharing When this
feature is on, you allow your family members to see your current location in
apps like Messages and Find My Friends. It additionally helps you spot your
misplaced or stolen iPhone by means of the new Find My app (requires iOS 13 or
later). The flip side is that this functionality may reduce the device’s
battery life. If you can do without this feature, go to Settings > [Your Name]
> Find My and tap the Share My Location slider to the left to turn it off.
Idle widgets Be sure to keep abreast of the installed widgets. If there are
ones you hardly ever use, remove them without a second thought. To view your
widgets, swipe right across the Home screen of your iPhone. If you find a
widget that doesn’t belong there, scroll down and tap Edit, then tap the red
“minus” icon for the specific widget you no longer need, and finally, tap Done.
Handoff The Handoff feature makes your digital experience seamless across
different Apple devices so that you can, say, continue your iPhone app usage
session on a Mac or vice versa. This type of synchronization is definitely
awesome, but you might not need it to be constantly on. If so, consider
disabling it by going to Settings > General > Handoff. Memory hogs Whereas
every app installed on your smartphone leaves a footprint in terms of energy
usage, some programs consume more battery power than others. To identify such
resource-heavy entities, go to Settings > Battery and scroll down to view your
most used apps. The dashboard will additionally reflect the degree of power
consumption for each entry. If there are unused apps on that list, it could be
a good idea to disable or uninstall them. Automatic updates This feature is a
godsend if you want to have the latest app versions installed on your iPhone.
However, it uses up a good deal of cellular data and may also cause your
battery to be

I have an iPhone 7 Plus, I don't know if it would be compatible with the eight.
It probably would be though. I usually carry my keyboard in a Ziploc bag with
its charger cable included and I could place it in my large purse. When I'm
going to visit someone, I put it in my backpack, and away I go! Thanks for your

However, it uses up a good deal of cellular data and may also cause your
battery to be discharged when you need your device the most. In order to
disable automatic updates for all or specific apps, go to Settings > [Your
Name] > iTunes & App Store and apply the appropriate changes. Background app

Subject: Voice Over and Bluetooth speakers

I found an interesting quirk with voice over and Bluetooth speakers that lets
me choose whether voice over speak through the speaker on the phone or if it
goes through the Bluetooth speaker.

. In recent versions of IOS, voice over continues to use the iPhone speaker
when a Bluetooth speaker is connected. A couple days ago I turned voice over
off and then back on while my phone was connected to a Bluetooth speaker. When
voice over came back on voice over had changed and was going through the
speaker instead of the phone. Voice over continued to go through the speaker
the next day when I reconnected my phone with the same speaker. I then turned
off the speaker and shut off voice over and then restarted it. When I turned
the speaker back on and my phone connected to it voice over remained with the
phone rather than going through the speaker.

RE: Three-way calling.

2020-06-04 Thread Carolyn
I was successful today, when I made a call from Contacts, did not use Siri, and
then, I could get the other party.

At another time, I was on a call talking to someone, and another call came in.
I found that name on the screen and answered, but lost the first caller. That
is something I haven't mastered yet.

If the phone is locked when the other call comes in, then yes.
If not, then hide keyboard will be available and then you can add a call, etc.

Voice Over and Bluetooth speakers

2020-06-04 Thread rhs via VIPhone

Hi, Everyone.
It seems YouTube has fixed the gesture to swipe up/down to
rewind/forward in a video. There's also an option now to go
back/forward ten seconds; the buttons for this are to the left and
right of the Play button.

HTH,

RE: RE: Recommendation for an Apple-Compatible BT-Keyboard?

2020-06-04 Thread chaltain
I’m not sure what keyboard you're referring to, but since I suggested the K-380
keyboard from Logitech, I'll say that although it is a compact keyboard, it
does not fold, and it won't fit into a small purse. It'll definitely fit into a
briefcase and a back pack, and maybe a large purse, but not a small purse.

It could be under the Audio, Sounds and Haptics, where you find you can toggle
off individual settings.
Like, focused item.
Turn the haptic off there, and I think you will find that as you move around
the screen there is no vibration.
You may want to try a few others in there.

That is the haptic feedback.
I do not think it is the sound volume at all.
I’m pretty sure that if you turned off the haptic feedback, you wouldn’t get
the vibrations.

Subject: question regarding sound vibration in new SE

I’ve had my new SE for about a week. I upgraded from a 6S. Before I sent my
old phone back to Apple, I was doing a side by side comparison because of a
difference I noticed. I’m curious if those of you who are audiophiles or sound
engineer types can explain this to me. My sighted husband couldn’t detect
what I was talking about, but I’m guessing other blind people would pick up on
this as I did.

I’ve certainly heard some of you remark that sound quality is better on the SE.
I have really only used it for VoiceOver to date, and I wouldn’t claim to be
that astute about music sound quality anyway. Here’s what I noticed. I had
VoiceOver volume set as close to the same on both phones as possible I took
both out of their cases and set them on the table. I then ran my finger over
the screen showing my mail inbox on both phones, so that VoiceOver was reading
aloud at the same time. . I notice that the SE distinctly had a different feel
as the sound is projecting. I can really feel the vibration through my finger
as I’m moving around the screen, even if volume is set low, like 25%. It’s
like the sounds waves are causing a vibration,. It changes the sounds a bit
and actually kind of irritates my finger. I don’t feel any of that on the 6S.
Anyone else notice this? I’m not sure how it would feel on a 7 or 8, so maybe
most of you are used to this. I’m just really surprised at how different it
feels and I’m honestly a bit disappointed. I think I’m also feeling the
difference a bit on my eardrums, but the feel in my finger is a more pronounced
way to describe the difference.

On a related note, is the hole on the bottom left were the 3.5 headphone used
to plug in now also a speaker? I just noticed that, if I have VoiceOver
talking, my thumb clearly feels more vibration coming out of the right speaker
than the left. I’m not sure if it would be equal, so maybe this is expected
behavior.

I’ll go to an Apple store soon if this could be a problem, but didn’t want to
sound like a complete neurotic person without some validating of what I’m
observing.

However, it uses up a good deal of cellular data and may also cause your
battery to be discharged when you need your device the most. In order to
disable automatic updates for all or specific apps, go to Settings > [Your
Name] > iTunes & App Store and apply the appropriate changes. Background app
refresh With this option enabled, the apps that were automatically suspended
due to inactivity over a certain period of time can still check for new content
and updates. As useful as it is, the feature affects your iPhone’s battery
life. To turn it off system-wide or for individual apps, go to Settings >
General > Background App Refresh and follow the on-screen prompts.

misplaced or stolen iPhone by means of the new Find My app (requires iOS 13 or
However, it uses up a good deal of cellular data and may also cause your
battery to be discharged when you need your device the most. In order to
disable automatic updates for all or specific apps, go to Settings > [Your
Name] > iTunes & App Store and apply the appropriate changes.
Notifications If you are a fan of mobile games and social networking, then you
probably know how irritating the numerous notifications about new friend
requests, likes, comments, and other routine events can get. In addition to
being a nuisance, this permanent reporting drains the battery a lot. To

Hi,

One setting that can save some battery usage is the "screen brightness"
setting. Reducing the brightness helps as the phone's display uses a fair
amount of battery.

As one with no vision I set my screen brightness to 2% or 3% with a simple SIRI
command
"set screen brightness to 2%"
On my iphone 8, while I have not accurately measured it, I feel this adds at
least an hour of usage time per day. It should help yourusage as well.

Of course, if I need sighted help I have to remember to turn up the brightness.

I also keep a battery pack with me for the times when I run my phone really low
during the day. :)

RE: Recommendation for an Apple-Compatible BT-Keyboard?

2020-06-04 Thread Richard Turner
Apple keyboards are of good quality but also twice the price of equally good
keyboards.
They may offer one or two commands that other brands don’t, but at this point,
I would go with a Logitech keyboard.
Just my 2 ¢worth. And just think, you didn’t even have to pay that much, grin.

Any more information on what you’re looking for? For example, are you looking
for something portable or a desktop keyboard?

For me, I recommend the K-380 from Logitech. It’s a solid little compact
keyboard that you can pair with three devices. It won’t fit in a pocket or
anything, but you can easily slip it into a brief case or a back pack.

Three-way calling.

2020-06-04 Thread Carolyn
If someone calls me, it seems that in order to get another
party on the line, I have to first enter my access code? I
did not complete the task, but am wondering, if I just do
that, then go to Hide, then Add Call, into Contacts or
Keypad get my other party(s), then Merge, if that works?
Thanks for help.

A Couple of SE Questions

2020-06-04 Thread Carla
Just a couple of things. The one thing I don't care for about the new SE
phone is it doesn't seem to have good battery life. Is there anything I can
do to make the battery life longer? It will hold all day but by the time my
day ends it is pretty low. Also where in settings do I find alerts such as
earthquake alerts as someone mentioned. Thanks!

Mike did you turn off vibration under accessibility? I put haptics in the
search and it looks like if you turn that off it will turn it off for
everything. It says it will turn vibration off for everything including
earth quake alerts.

I've turned off the haptic feedback and still get the vibration. I have
haptics turned off in, Settings / System haptics, and also in, Accessibility

Subject: question regarding sound vibration in new SE

I’ve had my new SE for about a week. I upgraded from a 6S. Before I sent my
old phone back to Apple, I was doing a side by side comparison because of a
difference I noticed. I’m curious if those of you who are audiophiles or
sound engineer types can explain this to me. My sighted husband couldn’t
detect what I was talking about, but I’m guessing other blind people would
pick up on this as I did.

I’ve certainly heard some of you remark that sound quality is better on the
SE. I have really only used it for VoiceOver to date, and I wouldn’t claim
to be that astute about music sound quality anyway. Here’s what I noticed.
I had VoiceOver volume set as close to the same on both phones as possible I
took both out of their cases and set them on the table. I then ran my finger
over the screen showing my mail inbox on both phones, so that VoiceOver was
reading aloud at the same time. . I notice that the SE distinctly had a
different feel as the sound is projecting. I can really feel the vibration
through my finger as I’m moving around the screen, even if volume is set
low, like 25%. It’s like the sounds waves are causing a vibration,. It
changes the sounds a bit and actually kind of irritates my finger. I don’t
feel any of that on the 6S. Anyone else notice this? I’m not sure how it
would feel on a 7 or 8, so maybe most of you are used to this. I’m just
really surprised at how different it feels and I’m honestly a bit
disappointed. I think I’m also feeling the difference a bit on my eardrums,
but the feel in my finger is a more pronounced way to describe the
difference.

On a related note, is the hole on the bottom left were the 3.5 headphone
used to plug in now also a speaker? I just noticed that, if I have
VoiceOver talking, my thumb clearly feels more vibration coming out of the
right speaker than the left. I’m not sure if it would be equal, so maybe
this is expected behavior.

I’ll go to an Apple store soon if this could be a problem, but didn’t want
to sound like a complete neurotic person without some validating of what I’m
observing.

I noticed that the forward and rewind in youtube is now working properly. I do
not know if it was a youtube bug or an iOS bug that caused the miss-function
but it is now fixed if you have iOS 13.5.1 and the latest youtube update.

RE: question regarding sound vibration in new SE

2020-06-04 Thread Dennis Long
Mike did you turn off vibration under accessibility? I put haptics in the
search and it looks like if you turn that off it will turn it off for
everything. It says it will turn vibration off for everything including earth
quake alerts.

I've turned off the haptic feedback and still get the vibration. I have
haptics turned off in, Settings / System haptics, and also in, Accessibility /
Voiceover / Audio / Sounds and haptics. I only have haptics turned on for the
Home button, but still the phone vibrates.

I’m not sure if it would be equal, so maybe this is expected
behavior.

I’ll go to an Apple store soon if this could be a problem, but didn’t want to
sound like a complete neurotic person without some validating of what I’m
observing.
