Question About Payment Info and Setting Up New Device

Hi, Guys.
I'm setting up my Mom's new iPad and am trying to make sure it's as
out-of-the-box-easy-to-use as possible. I have restored her info from
her old iPad that was backed up to the Cloud. Is her payment info
included with the restoration, or do I need to input it again on the
new device?

Well, my first choice would be to connect something like a Victor Reader to the 
earphone jack and record it that way. 
Or, you probably could use the screen recording feature, but realize that is 
likely to be a very large file depending on how long of a recording you are 
making.

Thanks for your concern, Carolyn, I am not posting a lot because my store
has kept me extremely busy and since the beginning of the year I have been
working 10 to 14 hours a day 7 days a week.
. We are in the process of switching to a subscription-based online point of
sale computer system and that means over 5,000 items need to be moved from
the old system to the new. We can export items from the old system into
Excel files, but a lot of manual clean-up is required before the products in
the Excel files are ready to be imported into the new system. Once a group
of items has been imported my staff then has to scan every item to do a
physical inventory count and once we are all done with that, hopefully in a
few days, I am moving on to my accounting system since I am also switching
from Sage 50 which I have used for over 20 years to QuickBooks Online.
QuickBooks will be integrated with our point of sale system and there is a
lot to learn. I had my store closed for the first week of the new year to
get most of this done, but my customers expect us to help them out if they
need something so now we have been open again while we complete the
transition.

The issued could be gmail treating emails that originated from certain ISP's
as spam , as it's quite aggressive in that regard when it doesn't like the
originating ISP's outgoing mail server.

Mary, 34 gigs of free space is something I wish I had free on my
iPhone.  My entire iPhone which is a 256 gig version is nothing but a
bunch of audio books, mostly from bard mobile which I have around 210
gigs worth, and audible is around  19 gigs or so.  I've only got about
2 gigs free.  I'm really lucky my iPhone works as well as it does.

Its very easy.  First, go to some place with a lot of light say your
kitchen.  Now, put your bill down on say your kitchen table.  I always
make sure the space is pretty open with not a lot of stuff around my
bill.  Now, once you have your bill on the table, hold your phone
above the bill about maybe 6 inches or so, and slowly start to lower
your iPhone down towards your bill.  Your iPhone will speak the
denomination of your bill.  Good luck.  It does work quite well.

Voice Memos should do fine for you. the files are not huge, and the sound 
quality is good. Plus, it is pretty easy. 
How much memory do you have on your phone? 
Just Press Record will also do a fine job and you should find the files are not 
much larger than with Voice Memos.

Best app for recording a doctor visit

I have a couple of recording apps on my phone, including that one provided by 
Apple voice memos, and just press record. But truth to tell, I really never use 
either one of them. But I have a visit with a surgeon this coming Wednesday, 
and I have a feeling I’m going to want to record the meeting, assuming he 
allows it. I don’t know how long this meeting will be. And I don’t know how 
much space recordings from these apps take up. I just want the Fidelity to be 
decent enough that I can replay it for myself, and I don’t want it to be so 
huge that it won’t record because I run out of space. And of course, I would 
like the recording quality to be decent. It doesn’t have to be studio koality.

Either, close everything out of the app switcher and reboot, or call Apple 
Accessibility. I know of nothing that would change that. It isn't a setting 
that I know of.

phone not announcing low batter

i have noticed that my phone is not announcing when i get a low 
battery.  i was wondering how i could possibly get it back to announcing 
it aga in.  i am using an iphone 8 and IOS version 14.2.  thanks

Once you have downloaded and opened a book, you can start continuous
reading by swiping down with two fingers. You stop reading by taping the
screen once with two fingers. You can also read individual lines by slowly
moving your finger down the page. To go forward a page, swipe left with
three fingers. To go back a page, swipe right with three fingers. I keep
this streight in my head by picturing turning the pages of a book. If you
want to go forward a page, you flip the page over to the left and you
reverse the move if you want to go back a page. Note you use the page
flipping  gesture when you are not in continuous reading mode. In that
mode, the pages flip on their own, automatically. When not in continuous
reading mode, when you flip a page, the kindle app will automatically start

For the most part, it is like an iPhone on steroids.

The frustrating part for me when I first had to learn to use one is the split 
screen layout it does in certain areas.
For example, if you open settings, and I'd suggest having it in landscape mode 
when you do this.
The screen will be in two columns.
The left side will have all the major settings headings like the Apple ID, 
Airplane Mode, Wifi, etc.
If one of those is selected, then you move to the right column and all the 
relevant settings for that topic.
Also, if you have music on it and say you have your music by artist.
The left side will have the artist name, and the right side will have the 
songs/albums.
Mail is handled that way as well.  
I do not have access to a full iPad since I retired, but I would go into 
settings, under multi-tasking and dock and turn off the split keyboard and also 
turn off Siri suggestions in dock.
What the iPad does is anytime you open an app, if Siri suggestions in dock is 
on, then the app icon will appear after the main dock icons and as you cross 
from say, music, to a suggestion it will say suggestion and then the app name, 
but the app icon will also stay where it was to begin with.  Thus, you have two 
places you can find that app, so long as it is in the group of suggested apps.
Personally, I find it less confusing, especially for people starting out, to 
turn that off so apps only appear in one place.
Note, you can move a lot more apps to the dock than on an iPhone.

The split-keyboard business means the keyboard will show up as a tiny half 
keyboard in the lower left and right corners instead of across the bottom of 
the screen like on an iphone.

I bought my Mom a new iPad for Christmas. It came in last week, and I need to 
get a quick tutorial on how to use one, since I'll be helping her with updates 
and such as she needs these to happen.

My main problem is understanding how things are laid out on the screen. I've 
got an iPhone SE, and think eight or so of those could fit on the iPad screen. 
Is the layout of information different since there's tons more space? Also, 
where is the keypad when you have to pair something, say, a Braille display, 
with the iPad?

10 to 14 hours a day 7 days a week.
. We are in the process of switching to a subscription-based online point of 
sale computer system and that means over 5,000 items need to be moved from the 
old system to the new. We can export items from the old system into Excel 
files, but a lot of manual clean-up is required before the products in the 
Excel files are ready to be imported into the new system. Once a group of items 
has been imported my staff then has to scan every item to do a physical 
inventory count and once we are all done with that, hopefully in a few days, I 
am moving on to my accounting system since I am also switching from Sage 50

I don't keep mine on automatic. I have skipped some of the updates, whenever I 
hear complaints about them. An update reminder comes up sometimes on my Home 
Page, I just flick to later, and it goes away.

After you go into Settings / General / Software Update, look for Automatic 
updates and open this.  In here is where the settings are for automatic 
downloading and updating.  I don't have a pending update so I can't say what to 
do about a Cancel button but, only how to get to the automatic settings.

For the most part, it is like an iPhone on steroids.

The frustrating part for me when I first had to learn to use one is the split 
screen layout it does in certain areas.
For example, if you open settings, and I'd suggest having it in landscape mode 
when you do this.
The screen will be in two columns.
The left side will have all the major settings headings like the Apple ID, 
Airplane Mode, Wifi, etc.
If one of those is selected, then you move to the right column and all the 
relevant settings for that topic.
Also, if you have music on it and say you have your music by artist.
The left side will have the artist name, and the right side will have the 
songs/albums.
Mail is handled that way as well.  
I do not have access to a full iPad since I retired, but I would go into 
settings, under multi-tasking and dock and turn off the split keyboard and also 
turn off Siri suggestions in dock.
What the iPad does is anytime you open an app, if Siri suggestions in dock is 
on, then the app icon will appear after the main dock icons and as you cross 
from say, music, to a suggestion it will say suggestion and then the app name, 
but the app icon will also stay where it was to begin with.  Thus, you have two 
places you can find that app, so long as it is in the group of suggested apps.
Personally, I find it less confusing, especially for people starting out, to 
turn that off so apps only appear in one place.
Note, you can move a lot more apps to the dock than on an iPhone.

The split-keyboard business means the keyboard will show up as a tiny half 
keyboard in the lower left and right corners instead of across the bottom of 
the screen like on an iphone.

Using the Kindle App

I am having trouble using the Kindle App.  I have downloaded a book and several 
free samples. These are cookery books so  I need to navigate be able to go 
backwards and forwards.  Also I fine it difficult to close anything I am 
readings  so I can look at something else.  If anyone could give me an idiots 
guide on using the App I would be very grateful.

a square panel from right edge inwards.  This assumes 
landscape, though not sure it doesn't try to do same even in portrait.
i.e:  email:  list of msgs down left and current focus msg in main panel from 
the right, sorry!
Browser:  prev tags down left and main page content in main panel to right. 
Settings:  main menu down left and lower levels you are 
navigating in square panel;   things like that.
Mine is an old one and it might have changed or been refined  since then.

I know money is precious, especially these days. But IMHO, I don't
mind having gotten the apps separately. Winston's costs are
reasonable, and he's made sure over the years to make sure the apps
have kept up with IOS development, and we're not charged for updates
at all. Not a steal. More like a really really great deal.
I'll go look at this new added feature now.

Most of the time I am using my Apple airPods, with the same result as when I 
don’t use them. Sometimes calls are announced and sometimes they aren’t. As I 
said earlier, VO acts like it is going to read but then doesn’t. Sometimes when 
I silence the ringer by pressing one of the volume buttons, I can swipe and get 
the information, but most of the time when I swipe nothing happens, so even 
when I attempt to check the screen, VO doesn’t say anything. All was so very 
well before IOS14. 


I have even tried different ringtones lol. Not sure what would happen if I had 
no ringtone set but I’m afraid I wouldn’t hear the phone ring if I didn’t have 
the airPods in. Thanks for the suggestion though.
