RE: App to show a specific calendar group

2021-10-24 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
I use Fantastical (free version) Google Calendar and the native iPhone app for
my different calendars. For a sighted person, it's easy enough to color-code
different calendar entries. I.E. work, personal etc., but I at least found it
to be too cluttered to have all my calendars contained in one app. Note, I
easily have over two hundred appointments that I have to manage for my
businesses each month. That on top of all my personal stuff, it's just easier
to have each calendar set up in its own app.

Subject: App to show a specific calendar group

Good day. I am looking for an app to show me a specific calendar. For example,
I have created several calendars in addition to the Home and Work calendars
provided. If I want to see all of the events in my Doctor calendar, I cannot
find an easy way to do this in either the native calendar app or in Fantastical
II, which is the calendar app I normally use. If I go to the calendar options
in these apps, I'm presented with a list of calendars that I can choose to show
or hide, such as for holidays, birthdays, or my own calendars. When I choose a
certain group, I'm not shown a list of events in that group. If I try to do a
search for a certain calendar group, like my "Family" group, I'm shown a few
recurring events but not the full list of events which I know are in that
group. Does anyone know of a way I can view these calendar groups, or an app I
can use to view them? I'm using an iPhone
11 with iOS 15.0.2, for what it's worth.

Thanks,
Wayne Merritt

Hi Alan,

I also prefer using a credit card especially since here in Canada it is now
extremely rare that you can't simply tap the card or of course I can use Apple
Pay with my iPhone or Apple Watch, but I find having a bit of cash in my wallet
is still handy for certain things. One example is when I take a taxi, here in
our small town they now finally have meters, but those only apply when you take
a longer trip out of town, in town any trip is still $12 and I usually give the
driver a bit of a tip, if I want to do this with a card (and they only accept
debit cards at this point due to the much lower fees) I would have to ask the
driver to set it up with a $2 tip or 15% of whatever whereas it's really handy
to have a $10 bill and a couple of Toonies or a $10 and a $5 bill and ask him
for a Dollar change.

And for all you non-Canadians who probably have no idea what a "Toonie" is,
it's our nick name for a 2 Dollar coin. The word is made up from "Loonie" our 1
Dollar coin which was introduced to replace the 1 Dollar bill in 1987 and the
number 2.

The Loonie name comes from the picture of the Common Loon which is on one side
of the coin, this is a water bird which occurs regularly in every single
Canadian province and Territory, in fact, 95% of the world's Loon population
breed in Canada, it's also found in Alaska, northern Minnesota and New England.

The Loon is the provincial bird for the province of Ontario and while Canada
doesn't currently have a national bird, most Canadians think this should be the
one.

The call of the Loon is very distinct and has 3 main variations, Whale (almost
like a wolf howl), Laugh or Tremolo and Yodel.

Below are a few facts and then two links, one to an article (it doesn't have
the recording), and two more for different recordings of the Loon calls:

• chick can swim right away, but spends some time on the back of a parent to
rest, conserve heat, and avoid predators

• has many bones that are solid, rather than hollow like those of other birds,
which aid its diving ability

• can stay under water for up to 5 minutes and dive to depths of 60 to 70 m
(196 to 229 feet)

• may have to run as far as several hundred metres (800 to 1000 feet) on the
surface of the water on a calm day before gaining enough speed to take off

• Loons can live up to 30 years, longer than Canada Geese (24 years) and much
longer than ducks (10 years)

• Although no one is sure why, Common loons' eyes are bright red in the summer.
They then change colour in the fall, fading to a dull reddish brown, while

their striking black and white plumage fades to grey.

• Species include the most common and recognizable black and white Common Loon,
the Red-throated Loon, the Pacific Loon, the Arctic Loon and the Yellow-billed
Loon.

And back to the topic of money, our smallest bill is 5 Dollars and just as in
the US we also have a 10, 20, 50 and 100 Dollar bill, all of them are made from
a polymer plastic which is super tough, you can put it through the washer
without ill effect, and all bills are marked with 6-dot braille symbols which
ultimately can wear off as well, but it takes a really long time. A $5 bill has
a single 6-dot symbol in one of

Trouble with Bank of America app

2021-10-24 Thread Bill Outman
Hi, list.

I am trying to log into my Bank of America app on my 8 Plus using iOS 15,,
and am finding it frustrating.

I got the on line account set up anew at my local branch last month and
finally got the courage to try to log in by mself after reading the terms of
service agreement.

So I tried to enter what I thought was the user ID and password and could
not consistently put myself in the edit boxes with my Bluetooth keyboard,
nor could I find an on screen keyboard when I turned the Bluetooth off, I
know sometimes sites and apps can be picky about requiring the on screen
keyboard.

Occasionally I could get into the fields and get the bonks instead of clicks
we have discussed before, and noted the log in button showing as dimmed as
we have noted as well, but at one point I got a notice the password or ID
didn't match what was on file, and I had only a couple tries left. So I
used the forgot password section and eventually got sent to me an
authorization code to reset, but those edit boxes were difficult to get into
as well. All the while I am having trouble finding the continue button when
it's required. I didn't find the send request button right away when it was
time for the code to be sent to me.

I did get that entered eventually, and I could have just changed the
password, but I went back and again tried what I believed I knew to be the
password.

At least I confirmed I was using the correct user ID, but when I enter the
log in screen it is showing me something elsd that was probably the old ID
which was under a different email, and I can't seem to get that edited out.

I'm unsure as to whether to check the box for save ID, I believe it is, and
maybe that's part of the problem too, the old ID may hae been saved
someplace.

I've been getting the email alerts since I set up the ID last month, but I
am really wanting to customize alerts and look over recent transactions, as
I have had some trouble with some unexplained overdraws of late. I'd even
like to try their voice assistant, if it works well with using VoiceOver.

I did get an email saying my user ID had been looked up, giving a phone
number to call for trouble logging in. I am hesitant to call it, as I am
not sure how much experience they would have dealing with a blind person
using VoiceOver.

On one positive note, I deposited a check through an ATM for the first time,
though I had to help since I didn't have ear buds with me to activate the
speech. If I hadn't been able to do that, my finances would have beeneven
worse.

Re: VoiceOver volume goes so low I can’t hear it on zoom

2021-10-24 Thread Mary Otten
I’m coming back with more information which at least to me does seem to
implicate some thing about the watch in my voice over volume problem.
Yesterday, I had occasion to do a zoom meeting on an older iPhone which is not
connected to my watch in anyway. It doesn’t even have a Sim card. I was wearing
the watch and the zoom went great. No volume problems.

And just now, I got an actual phone call on my phone that is connected with the
watch. The phone rang on the watch and my iPhone. Voiceover volume went away
completely I couldn’t hear it at all on either device. I just lucked out and
double tapped blindly, no pun intended, and I got the answer button just buy
luck. The only way I could get voiceover back on the phone with the turn it off
and start it over again. And in both cases, I used Siri. And the voice that I
heard on Siri when I turned off voiceover and turn it back on is not the usual
Siri voice that I use. It was some other strange voice that I don’t know what
it is.

Hi Sieghard,

Canada is light years ahead of the States concerning electronic funds transfer.
I believe I can hear the cringing of the large financial firms in the US when a
discussion about the free electronic transfer of funds ensues.

And in Canada a similar service is Interac email money transfer which is by now
supported by every major bank and Credit Union.

Many home based businesses like it because it costs them nothing and for the
sender it is often also included in their banking plan.

It works by logging in to your online banking either using your bank's app or
the website, you then go to Interac eTransfer and if it's the first time you
send somebody money you have to putin their name and email address or mobile
number, you can then save this information if you want so it's much easier and
faster next time.

Then you enter the amount and you may have to enter a security question and
answer and the recipient will have to know the answer in order to deposit the
money, it's sort of like a password.

The recipient then gets either an email or a text depending on whether you used
email or a phone number and they click on the link to deposit the money. This
directs them to the Interac website where you pick your financial institution,
you then sign in to your online banking or if you do this on a phone where you
have your bank's app installed you have the option to use the app and then you
can pick which account you want the money to be deposited in, you enter the
answer for the security question and that's it.

One way to make this even easier and a lot faster is to sign up for auto
deposit. This way you associate whichever account you want with an email and/or
your mobile number. If somebody then sends you money they won't have to enter a
security question and answer and when you receive the money it is automatically
deposited to the account you specified and you only get a message to let you
know you received X amount of Dollars from such and such person and it was
deposited.

Depending on the bank a transfer can be almost instantaneously, but it can also
take up to 20 or 30 minutes to get the notification/message with the link to
deposit it.

If you have different accounts you can still set up auto deposit by either
using different emails addresses or you could, for example, use your email
address for one account and your mobile number for the other one.

Fortunately our banks and Credit Unions here are all fully accessible, I have a
bank account at our local Credit Union, I have my main business and personal
account with RBC Royal Bank, but just switched to them from Scotia Bank a
little more than a year ago and I have a CIBC Visa and a Bank of Montreal
Mastercard and all websites and apps are very accessible. I never dealt with
Toronto Dominion or National Bank, but for a while I had an account at
Tangerine, they are associated with Scotia Bank, but don't have traditional
branch locations and all that and are supposed to offer cheaper fees and so on
and they were also totally accessible. I have no doubts that TD and National
also would be as are all provincial and Federal government websites as
accessibility is very much part of the mandate.

Hi Sieghard,

Thanks for the lesson on Canadian money and the discussion and links about the

Does it work without two factor?

RE: Need A New Money Reading App

2021-10-24 Thread Alan Lemly
Esther,

Venmo is owned by PayPal and is part of PayPal's larger family of brands. This
mobile payment app allows you to send and receive money quickly. The company
describes its service as making sending money “safe, simple and social.” You
can also use Venmo to make purchases via the mobile app, online or in person.

hi, everyone, I also use credit cards to pay for things. Could you tell me what
Venmo does? I might look into that too. Take care. Esther

would have thought that paying often using currency would be very inconvenient

I also have Seeing AI, Cash reader App, and Envision also has money reader in
the app. Since also I own the Envision glasses, I utilize the money identifier
which is cool to be able to scan at eye level since the camera is on the right
side of the glasses. Envision partnered up with the Cash reader app.

Hey Guys,

I've had an app called Money Reader on my iPad Mini for a few

years. It's been quite a while since I used it. I tried this

morning and found out that it won't open now. I got the message

that the app needs to be updated to work with this version of iOS,

and an Okay button. When I click the Okay button. When I click the

Okay button, the message disappears and I'm back to the list of apps.

So I guess I need to get one that will work with the latest version

of iOS.

I'm looking for suggestions.

Thanks very much.

RE: Scan Text option in Rotor?

2021-10-24 Thread Richard Turner
It would appear that feature is coming in iOS 15.1 according to someone
currently using the beta.

The Text Recognition in the camera works as good as some of the early OCR apps
worked.

So, I suspect it will continue to improve, but only time will tell.

It may be useful for short things. I’ll play around with it once 15.1 comes
out.

I also don't see this also in Settings > Camera the "Live Text" option is
turned on.

Maybe there is another setting somewhere which controls this although one would
expect that this would be explained in articles about the feature. Here is one
I found on Macworld:

iOS 15: How to scan text almost
anywhere

In any case, I wonder how useful and accessible this feature is, it sounds like
there is a fairly visual aspect to doing this.

Well, rumor has it that 15.1 may be out this week, so I'll wait and see if it
shows up then.

If not, I'll call Apple and inquire.

That would be a handy feature at times.

Thanks Jenny,
Malcom, unless you have updated to a public release beyond the beta when you
removed the beta profile, you are still essentially running the beta software.

I'm looking forward to 15.1 for other reasons that I jst learned about.

That’s interesting, if I reply to this message, turn the rotor to Edit I
have the usual option with the addition of Scan Text. If I double tap
here I have Close and Insert options. While in the Scan Test option I
often get the prompt “Slow Down” like you get with People Detect which
suggests that it is not using an external app. I’m not aware of my doing
 anything to activate this feature.

Well I know if you use one of the newer American Siri voices that’s what
happens but if you switch to a different voice do some experimentation and it
won’t say the letter C before the word though.

A very strange voice over issue that I’ve been noticing. Every time I write
anything whether in a text message or in an email, when I go back to edit or
when I’m just listening I hear the sound see as in the letter C following each
occurrence of the word The. when I go character by character there is nothing
showing following the word The that would make this sound. Anybody else

 Hello,

In apps where the Edit option is available in the Rotor, such as Messages,
Mail and so-on there is a Scan Text option. This takes text from the
camera's view, OCR's it and inserts it into the text area of an app.

RE: Need A New Money Reading App

2021-10-24 Thread Alan Lemly
I'm always curious when I see a lot of posts on these money reading app
threads. I realize in other parts of the world other than the US where I am,
the need to read various currencies might be important. Personally, I avoid
cash like the plague with the ability to pay with either a credit card where I
earn reward points or by some other electronic means such as Venmo, etc. I
would have thought that paying often using currency would be very inconvenient
and if you're paying for an app to identify currency such as Cash Reader, that
seems like money that could be used for other things.

Yes, I would assume it is simply using that ability in iOS 15 in the camera,
but it is very strange that you are finding this and I'm not.
I'll keep checking on this one.

I believe it is using the same OCR facility that is available in the Camera App
judging from my results.

RE: Need A New Money Reading App

Those are good features.
If your friend or family member has an Apple device, you can do that with
Facetime, and if not, Skype.
Just saying.

Yeah you can get a demo from their website. It’s not for everybody I just
wanted it more useful for me and yes I like the feature that says whether it’s
too dark to take a picture as well. Yes, artificial intelligence has its
drawbacks but it’s still learning all the time but the cool thing about it is
that you can also call a friend or family member after setting up and
requesting them and after they’ve excepted and down loaded the companion app
for being an ally it’s similar to Ira and be my eyes but it’s someone you can
trust with regards to helping with small things like clarification on some
things for example or if you’re stuck somewhere and you need to find an
alternate route for example.

Hey Guys,

I've had an app called Money Reader on my iPad Mini for a few years. It's
been quite a while since I used it. I tried this morning and found out
that it won't open now. I got the message that the app needs to be
updated to work with this version of iOS, and an Okay button. When I
click the Okay button. When I click the Okay button, the message
disappears and I'm back to the list of apps.

So I guess I need to get one that will work with the latest version of
iOS.

I'm looking for suggestions.

Thanks very much.

Evan

Well, rumor has it that 15.1 may be out this week, so I'll wait and see if it
shows up then.
If not, I'll call Apple and inquire.
That would be a handy feature at times.

RE: Need A New Money Reading App

2021-10-24 Thread Richard Turner
A friend bought the glasses and while he finds them useful in certain
situations, others he finds using an app and the built-in camera on the iPhone
to be much faster.
Be sure to get a good trial period so you can put them through their paces and
see if they are right for you.

Evan

Close and Insert options. While in the Scan Test option I often get the prompt
“Slow Down” like you get with People Detect which suggests that it is not using
an external app. I’m not aware of my doing anything to activate this feature.

RE: Scan Text option in Rotor?

2021-10-24 Thread Richard Turner
Malcolm,
I'm not finding this.
I opened your message and hit reply.
I turned the rotor to Edit and I had select, select all and that was it.

I tried opening a message to reply to in Messages, same thing.

Could you explain exactly where you have found this?

Perhaps you could also say what scanning apps you have installed in case it is
grabbing one of those some how?

I'm using a 13 pro with iOS 15.0.2.

Hello,

In apps where the Edit option is available in the Rotor, such as Messages, Mail
and so-on there is a Scan Text option. This takes text from the camera's view,
OCR's it and inserts it into the text area of an app.

I have had mixed results with it and as I have not seen mention of this
facility here I wondered if any of my friends here have used it and what
results you've obtained.

Re: Need A New Money Reading App

2021-10-24 Thread CHELA Robles
I also have Seeing AI, Cash reader App, and Envision also has money reader in
the app. Since also I own the Envision glasses, I utilize the money identifier
which is cool to be able to scan at eye level since the camera is on the right
side of the glasses. Envision partnered up with the Cash reader app.

I don't usually have much cash on hand, but EyeNote is great. It
works very well. I have had no problems using it. Being able to tell
the front and back of a bill is very cool.

Re: a 2 factor question

2021-10-24 Thread Kay Malmquist
What I was told by the app developer was that if two factor authentication
is already turned on, on your iPhone, you will never hear about it but if it
isn't, you will be reminded about it and you have to agree to turn it on. I
agree and wonder why they would even care.

I just downloaded this app and while I have 2-factor authentication turned
on I saw nothing regarding it and there is nothing in the app description.

I am not sure what Apple's 2-factor authentication would have to do with a
third party app unless maybe it came up when you chose to use your Apple Id
to sign into the app.

It says it will not work without two Factor turned on but I will try it
without and see what happens. It has been a bit crazy around here, so later
I will try it.

Yes, I believe that is the one designed primarily for indoor use to get
oneself back out of a complicated building.

I played with it a couple of years ago.

Does it work without two factor?

I live in a small enough house where it isn’t practical to use it even
for testing.

The app is titled Clew. Watch out for the spelling. It is kind of a
fun app to play with and works pretty well.

Do you mind giving the name of the app?

Richard, I guess that is my problem. The app says it will not work
without two factor authentication turned on. Which is in my opinion totally
not necessary because it is a navigation app and how serious can that be. I
mean really? Someone got in to your phone and found out you learned how to
get from the auditorium to the bathroom? There's a high security item for
you. I'll turn it off and see if that app works, but I doubt it because of
the hoops you had to jump through to sign in.

Well, you kind of answered your own question.

If you don’t want it, go ahead and turn it off.

It only comes up when you change something like a password, or
another privacy type setting in whatever app or service is using it.

Then, they send you a code, usually 6 digits, that you have to enter
in a box to proceed.

It can get annoying, but it works well and is another layer of
protection.

It is entirely up to you if you want to
